From Publishers Weekly
The world of championship thoroughbred racing is the milieu for Roberts' (Born in Fire) latest, a fast-paced, engaging tale of envy, greed and romance. Kelsey Byden, 26, is in the throes of divorcing her unfaithful husband when she suffers a second shock. It is a letter from her mother, whom she has long presumed dead. Her father, it turns out, has been lying to her-at her mother's request, since Naomi Chadwick was in prison for murder during many of those years. Kelsey travels to Virginia to meet her long-lost parent at her horse farm. As mother and daughter get to know each other, Kelsey falls in love with horses, racing and the gambler next door. Gabe Slater is handsome, virile and unlike anyone the spoiled young woman has ever met. Their attraction is instant and explosive, but their romance triggers a chain of events that includes murder and sabotage, prompting the lovers to risk their lives as they race to clear Naomi's name and to deal with old enemies and betrayals that threaten their future. Roberts paints her story with a broad brush, but its colorful canvas, easily identifiable heroes and villains and swirling action add up to another winner for this popular author.

From Library Journal
Although mystery writer Dick Francis probably won't fret over Roberts's invasion of his turf?that of big-time horse racing?this romantic thriller about shady goings-on at a Virginia horse farm comes on the heels of a string of best sellers (e.g., Hidden Riches, LJ 6/1/94).

From Booklist
Roberts is, indisputably, a pro. The first writer to be inducted into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame, she ensnares even the most skeptical reader with the sheer adrenalin of her calculated prose and the irresistible fashionability of her characters. Her latest tale, set in the high-stakes and glitzy but sleazy world of thoroughbred racing, combines garment-rending romance with cold-blooded murder. The action begins when beautiful blond Kelsey receives a letter from Naomi, her beautiful, blond, and allegedly dead mother. Kelsey is shocked to learn that her mother is not only alive, she is also a convicted killer who spent 10 years in prison. Defying the wishes of her staid English professor father, Kelsey dashes off to confront her mystery mother. It's love at first sight between the two strong-willed women, as well as between Kelsey and a hunk named Gabe who, like Naomi, raises and races horses. But love will have to wait as various stable hands and horses die violent and inexplicable deaths. It's all greed, revenge, and lust, lust, lust. A perfect summer indulgence. Donna Seaman

Together again with the only books they are coauthoring since the bestselling Left Behind series.

Before there was the tribulation, before the rapture, before there was a legacy that could be left behind, there was Jesus. John's Story tell His glorious, dramatic story. John's Story: The Last Eyewitness is told by the one whom Jesus called beloved. John, a once-broken man, was forever changed the moment he met the mysterious stranger from Nazareth, his heart opened by the One whom he discovered to be the Son of God.

At ninety years old, John is the last of the original twelve apostles still alive, the only one who was not martyred. Committed to spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ, he is called by God to write a gospel in order to set the record straight-as others were teaching that Jesus wasn't the Son of God. Recalling his time with Jesus, John brings to life the miracles and messages of the Man who would change the course of history.

The first in a series, John's Story: The Last Eyewitness is a remarkable and thrilling account of the life of the Man who came to fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament and to save all of mankind. To bring deeper understanding to the story, each of the four books nclude the text of the corresponding gospel as an appendix.

John's Story illuminates the times of Jesus, His life, and His messages like never before. Using cutting-edge historical and academic research, as well as biblically based themes, they are first and foremost page-turning novels that could come only from the pens of Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins.

From Publishers Weekly
With their wildly popular Left Behind thrillers, LaHaye and Jenkins took the Christian fiction genre to new heights of mainstream success, but also sparked renewed debate among evangelicals concerning End Times theology. Now, they reunite to undertake the Jesus Chronicles, a four-book series of historical novels profiling the lives of the Gospel writers: John, Mark, Matthew, and Luke. This first installment recounts the personal and spiritual journey of the only one of the original apostles who died from old age rather than martyrdom. Robinson Dean brings an appropriately deep and sober tone to his duties as narrator, especially in his portrayal of the elderly John's exhaustive efforts to leave a written record of both his first-person experiences and prophetic visions. The authors steep their storytelling in a conservative interpretation of scripture that may not appeal evenly across the broader spectrums of Christian theology, but they provide some engaging human drama. The audiobook also includes Dean's reading of the complete texts of all five New Testament books for which John is credited (John's Gospel, his three Epistles and Revelation).

From AudioFile
Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins's new work is not meant to be an examination of the life of the longest-living disciple of Jesus Christ. The authors of the popular Left Behind series ask listeners to accept the work for what it is--a novel. Reader Robertson Dean is the best thing about the book. His measured voice and soft tones sound like the best of the narrators of the religious movies of the 1960s. His is a trustworthy voice, a fatherly voice, amazingly gentle yet harsh when necessary. Expect more and you might be disappointed. M.S. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

This thriller follows the twists of a gripping plot as a detective tracks down a psychotic murderer - but all the time the detective knows that he himself has the potential for violence that would make it easy for him, too, to kill his prey.

Wiltse displays powerful writing skills in this spellbinding thriller. Retired FBI agent John Becker reluctantly agrees to help the police chief of a small Connecticut town investigate the cases of 15 missing men. Becker has personal reasons for not wanting to become involved, but the gravity of situation draws him in. Learning that many of the men have mothers with Scandinavian maiden names, Becker guesses that someone with access to such information might be the culprit. Via clever sleuthing, he discovers that the same insurance salesman had visited all of the missing men: he is the seemingly quintessentially ordinary Roger Dyce. Becker gets a chance to question Dyce when the latter lands in the hospital after an intended victim beats him up, but Dyce senses danger and escapes. Hoping to predict the killer's next moves, Becker struggles to fathom the the psychopath's mind, succeeding in a feat of amazing intuition. But even as Becker closes in, Dyce takes more lives. Alternating between Dyce's and Becker's points of view, Wiltse (The Fifth Angel) builds tension with subtle, chilling precision.

From Kirkus Reviews
Another serial psycho-killer from a specialist in the genre (The Wedding Guest, The Serpent, The Fifth Angel). Roger Dyce is a Connecticut insurance agent who likes to inject young men of Scandinavian extraction with a paralyzing drug, drain their blood (slowly, over several days), and dress them in the clothing of his beloved grandfather before dismembering their bodies. As he's disposing of his eighth victim, Dyce is drifting uncharacteristically toward Helen--a supermarket checker whose life expectancy dramatically declines--and eyeing as his next victim Eric Brandauer, a young tough who has ideas of his own. When his trap to catch Eric lands him in the hospital with an Eric-broken nose, Dyce comes face to face with his nemesis/double John Becker--an ex-FBI agent who quit the Bureau out of fear of his uncanny empathy for killers and his own growing propensity for violence.... The motivation of both men is tediously spun out--via italicized flashbacks revealing the nature of Dyce's attachment to his grandfather and Becker's sessions with his rock-climbing girlfriend and his psychiatrist--but the plotting of thrust and counterthrust, and the morituri musings, are chillingly understated. Creepy stuff, all right. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Enjoyable, but not as emotionally gripping as I expected.
By A Customer
This is a good "beach" book. I found the characters less rich and engrossing than I had anticipated from reviews and readers comments. Much of the plot was predictable and more graphically violent than I prefer. I will read more of John Becker, hoping that the books grow in depth and intensity. Overall, a deverting, quick read.

A Typical Psychological Thriller
By Untouchable
This is a psychological thriller that introduces us to ex-FBI agent John Becker. It's one of those fast paced books that ensured that I was frantically turning pages in an effort to keep up.
John Becker is asked to have a bit of a look into some recent disappearances of some young men in the local area to see whether they are related. Becker, who is trying to enjoy his retirement, very reluctantly agrees and has soon linked the missing men through a common, yet obscure similarity. From here the chase is on to identify and track down a man who we know as Dyce. We learn a lot about Dyce quite early on, and follow along as he finds himself a girlfriend. This was probably the only part of the book that I had a problem with as the girlfriend is cast as a real desperate, so much so that she completely ignores some pretty weird things about her new boyfriend. And when I say pretty weird, I'm talking right out there, baby.
This is quite a typical psychological thriller with the usual extreme - dare I say it - psychotic behaviour by the killer accompanied by the odd flashback to his childhood to explain his present day actions. Becker's character is established, casting him as reliable in his instincts, but difficult to work with, particularly when fool superiors are involved. It's the sort of first book of a series that promises further development of a character who already has issues.

Written with an ear for idiom, an eye for comedy and a heart that delights in the graces and foibles of its two protagonists, this unlikely love story unites April Ruth Bates, 16-year-old sister of the town's two classiest prostitutes, with Foster Williams, a Chesapeake Bay bridge-builder twice her age. April Ruth, as detached from her sisters' carryings-on as a farm girl is from the barnyard, preserves an untouchedness so endearing that when Foster takes her to the sea for the first time her rapture becomes the reader's. The two fall tenderly and believably in love, the mature man no less overcome by the wonder of it than the teenager. Apart from the fact that Foster earns their living, cooks their meals, cleans their housein short, turns April into a privileged childbliss abounds until the day their lame dog Vinnie is killed. Then, with Foster thunderous and accusatory, April runs away, gets a job and accepts the favors of another man. That the fated lovers come together again is the reader's hope, and eventually, delight. Naylor wrote Crazy Love.

From Library Journal
In spite of the squalor and demoralizing home life created by a drunken father and two street-wise older sisters, April Ruth Bates rebels against the threat of going to a juvenile home. When Foster Williams, a construction worker twice her age, offers to marry her, April readily agrees to avoid what seems a worse fate. The misunderstandings, frustrations, insecurities, and gossip that undermine the relationship and tear it apart, and the love and maturity that mend it and make the marriage stronger than ever, are presented here in a poignant but realistic novel of developing love and adjustment to married life. Naylor, a well-established author of children's books (and two previous adult novels), gives us a beautifully constructed and touching story that should appeal to adults and young adults alike. A lovely, unique regional romance about an emotionally
By Rosamond1
stunted man and an intuitive, spirited young woman. I read this book when it first came out in about 1986 and re-read it every few years.

It takes place in the early 1970s in rural southern Maryland, a very "down south" location for the mid-Atlantic region, especially then. The story, while a bit far-fetched, is made believable by Naylor's attention to detail about rural, working class life and her deft handling of the characters' emotions.

The hero, Foster, is a lonely, socially backward, 30-ish bridge construction worker who's pushed by the local busybodies into proposing marriage to a motherless 17 year old girl. The ostensible reason is to shield the girl from her drunken, abusive father, but the town matriarchs are also hoping the girl can help Foster come out of the protective shell he's built around himself to cope with his own tragic past.

The girl agrees, because she's smart enough to realize she's going to end up like her floozy sisters if she continues to live in her father's alcohol soaked, trailer-trash world. Of course, the unlikely couple has many serious obstacles to overcome and the relationship is strained to the breaking point on more than one occasion. It's fascinating to see these two different, yet deeply compatible, people trying to make their unorthodox marriage work. And heartbreaking when it appears they won't be able to do it.

What I like about this novel is the simple decency of the hero and the heroine. In spite of the setbacks and disadvantages they've both suffered in their none-too-charmed lives, they are smart, resourceful and principled. They are also wildly in love with each other, even if they don't realize it until it's. . . well, you'll have to read it to find out!

This is an above-average general fiction novel. Buy a used copy and curl up by the fire for a good read!

Like news from Lake Wobegon, Braun's Cat Who . . . series featuring retired journalist and heir Jim Qwilleran and his Siamese cats Koko and Yum Yum has charmed readers, and this 12th installment about events in mythical Pickax City is no exception. Qwill and cats move into an antique apple barn renovated by building contractor (and amateur actor) Dennis Hough. Concurrently the Pickax Theatre Club stages Henry VIII , with Hilary VanBrook, the unlikable but talented new high school principal, directing and playing the plum role of Cardinal Wolsey and a woman from neighboring Lockmaster (instead of a Pickaxian) controversially cast as Queen Katharine. When VanBrook is murdered in his car after a closing night party at Qwill's new home, Qwill looks into VanBrook's past while the police investigate his death. Local suspicion falls on Hough, the newest member of the community, but he is found hanged in the apple barn, and Qwill doubts that it's suicide. Koko and Yum Yum once again help Qwill identify the culprit via whisker twitches and tail wags. Series fans and newcomers alike will purr with delight. Mystery Guild main selection; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates.

YA-- Koko and Yum Yum cavort again, this time to help Qwill solve the puzzling, untimely deaths at their new home, a cavernous barn complete with picture windows from which the two cats watch the neighborhood birds. This highly entertaining novel is sure to please all who want a light mystery. Cat lovers particularly will enjoy the antics of the feline heroes, while others will appreciate the creative solution that grows out of seemingly unrelated clues. Qwill, a semi-retired newspaper writer, is owned by the cats and provides needed assistance as a sleuth. Relaxed, rural America is well drawn (except for the number of murders it has had since the series moved to this locale) and provides a delightful setting in this amusing romp that's perhaps Braun's best. --Claudia Moore, W. It's a real coup for the West!except for one thing. Kurbsky is still working for the Russians. From Publishers Weekly
When world-famous Russian novelist Alexander Kurbsky decides to leave for the West in bestseller Higginss suspenseful 16th thriller to feature former IRA man Sean Dillon (after Rough Justice), Kurbsky turns for help to Dillon and other members of the British prime ministers private army. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin persuades Kurbsky to infiltrate this elite group and spy for Russia by showing him current photos of his sister, Tania, who the celebrated author thought died years earlier in a student riot. Tanias release from a life sentence in prison is the price for Kurbskys cooperation. Dillon and the others, most notably Lady Monica Sterling, Dillons girlfriend, welcome Kurbsky into their circle in England, where the Russian begins to go about his deadly business. Several long flashbacks explore past events to good effect. The final dustup is a little rushed, but the crisp writing shows Higgins to be on top of his game. (Feb.)

From Booklist
The veteran author of political thrillers turns in another lackluster performance. As usual, the story contains the raw material for a first-rate novel: a Russian writer makes arrangements with Sean Dillon, the IRA terrorist turned British intelligence agent, and his colleagues in the “Prime Minister’s private army” to leave Russia and come to Britain. However, as Higgins reveals very early on, the writer is actually working for the Russians, and his deadly mission could wreak havoc at the top levels of the international intelligence community. Unfortunately, Higgins seems to be sleepwalking his way through the novel: the book opens, for example, with a clumsy scene in which one character tells another character something she already knows, purely for the benefit of the reader. The characters in the novel feel lifeless, even the ones whom the author has been writing about for years (there are more than a dozen Sean Dillon novels), and Higgins’ decision to reveal the Russian writer’s secret agenda at the beginning of the novel seems ill-considered: the story would have been more interesting, and certainly more surprising, if readers were left to wonder what this fellow was up to and whether he was keeping secrets. Higgins retains a large if shrinking fan base and that should ensure interest in the novel, but it’s definitely not one of his best. --David Pitt

The Darker Place to Be
By Rosa
This is Jack Higgins at his finest. Alex Kurbsky wants to defect. And hopes that Fergusion and his crew will help. But all is not what it seems. Once again Sean Dillon springs into action. This is a fast-paced and action packed. I couldn't put it down and finish it in one day. You won't be disappointed.

The Devil's in the Details
By Bryan Cassiday
Not one of his best efforts, "A Darker Place" shows evidence of slapdash writing by Higgins. To wit, Kurbsky, according to Higgins, is shot by Ali Selim in his left hip on page 330. However, on page 332, Kurbsky says he was shot in his right hip. Oops! The devil's in the details.

I also found the Russian soldier's abrupt fling with the maid at the hotel where Kurbsky was staying when he defected a bit contrived--as though the maid/lover was thrown in as an obvious plot device (she "happens" to see Kurbsky when he makes a run for it at the hotel and she notifies the Russians who were guarding him).

That being said, despite its jerry-built sections, "A Darker Place" is better than most thrillers, even though it's not Higgins's best.

As for Sean Dillon, he seems to have mellowed out in his old age. He doesn't have that devil-may-care attitude he used to have. In this particular book in the series, he is, in fact, irrelevant.

--Bryan Cassiday, author of "Fete of Death"

A disappointing read
By Bob Green
Higgins' books today are not as good as the earlier ones. It seems he does not take the time to think out the plot ahead of time and instead makes it up as he goes. Unfortunately he is in a rut of repeating plots over and over again. This is another example. I am hooked on reading all of his novels hoping for the spark of the Higgins of old but this is another disappointment.

Fire Sale (V.I. Warshawski Novels), by Sara Paretsky

The astonishing new V. I. Warshawski novel from one of America's foremost writers of crime fiction.

V.I. Warshawski may have left her old South Chicago neighborhood, but she learns that she cannot escape it. When V.I. takes over coaching duties of the girls' basketball team at her former high school, she faces an ill-equipped, ragtag group of gangbangers, fundamentalists, and teenage moms who inevitably draw the detective into their family woes.

Through young Josie Dorrado, V.I. meets the girl's mother, who voices her worries about sabotage in the little flag manufacturing plant where she works. The biggest employer on the South Side, discount-store behemoth By-Smart, pays even less, and Ms. Dorrado doesn't know how she'll support her four children if the flag plant shuts down.

The elder Dorrado's fears are realized when the plant explodes; V.I. is injured and the owner is killed. As V.I. begins to investigate, she finds herself onfronting the Bysen family, who own the By-Smart company. Founder William "Buffalo Bill" Bysen, now in his eighties, has four sons who quarrel with each other and with him; the oldest, "Young Mr. William," is close to sixty and furious that his father doesn't cede more power to him. And then there's "Billy the Kid," Young Mr. William's nineteen-year-old son, whose Christian idealism puts him on a collision course with his father, his grandfather, and the company as a whole.

When Billy runs away with Josie Dorrado, V.I. is squeezed between the needs of two very different families. As she tries to find the errant teenagers, and to track down a particularly cruel murderer, her own life is almost forfeit in the swamps that lie under the city of Chicago.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Private eye V.I. Warshawski takes a break from tony Lakeview to fill in for her old high school basketball coach on Chicago's South Side in her 12th adventure. Vic starts her volunteer stint looking for a team sponsor at megadiscount store By-Smart, whose founder, Buffalo Bill Bysen, is a fellow alum. Of all Bysen's cutthroat, cost-cutting family, only idealist 19-year-old Billy shows any interest in helping the team. When he disappears, his frustrated father hires Vic to find him. The mother of a high school basketball player also hires Vic to investigate sabotage at the flag factory where she works—an investigation cut short when the factory blows up before Vic's eyes. Things go no better at school or at home, and clues pile on but they don't add up. Vic takes her lumps as she makes her way from a fundamentalist church, where the pastor goes to extremes for his flock, to the city dump, where villains try to bury their secrets. Paretsky has recently tackled the Holocaust (Total Recall) and globalization (Hard Time); here she explores the struggles of the working poor and the schemes of the rich and infamous. Packed with social themes and moral energy, held together by humor, compassion and sheer feistiness, this novel shows why Paretsky and her heroine are such enduring figures in American detective fiction.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Long-running mystery series have a way of losing readers over time, but anyone who has drifted away from Paretsky's V. I. Warshawski should promptly return to the fold. The thirteenth Warshawski novel is one of the best, primarily because it takes V. I. back to her South Chicago roots, filling in fascinating backstory on the sleuth's evolution and effectively utilizing both the city's broad-shouldered past and its radically globalized present. V. I. returns to her old neighborhood--in the far southeast corner of Chicago--to fill in for her former high-school basketball coach, who is fighting cancer. Confronted by a dilapidated gym and a team made up mainly of gangbangers and single mothers, V. I. feels overwhelmed--for about five minutes, before she reacts with typical ferocity, driving her players and doggedly pursuing corporate funding for the team. It's the latter that takes her to By-Smart, South Chicago's main employer, run by a bigoted, born-again billionaire. Soon V. I. is caught in the middle of a Romeo and Juliet romance between the son of Mr. By-Smart and the daughter of a Latina single mother, whose employer's factory has just been destroyed by fire. Paretsky has never been better than she is here at evoking a sense of place--abandoned and rusting steel mills casting long shadows over the difficult lives of largely immigrant families. Nothing seems forced as Paretsky plays socioeconomic realities against a universal story of passion and jealousy, building the plot from the marshy ground up and allowing Chicago to muscle its way into a costarring role. I've read books from this series before...but they were written much earlier. This seemed so overly contrived and somewhat disjointed. I was disappointed.

Still the Best in her Field.
By N. Richardson
Sara Paretsky, along with Marcia Muller, created a subgenre in the mystery field with her series of Warshawski novels. And from the beginning, she stood apart from the rest by looking at the important issues of our time, framing them in the lives of ordinary people, while using the conventions of the genre to hook readers into compelling plots, dialogue and...suspense and action.

Like P. Schumacher, I have often compared her to Dickens because of her ability to create fabulous characters (including some terrific villains) while making complex political issues accessible to people who otherwise are turned off to politics.

In taking on the Walmartization of America, she has plenty of material. And she explores the issue from a variety of angles, including from the point of view of people forced by circumstance to be trapped in chronic underemployment. At the same time, she shows how the predatory practices of BigBox America destroys communities, including small business.

Any she does this while weaving a darn good story.

However, I would suggest the reader avoid at all costs the Brilliance Audio edition as voiced by the worst narrator working in AudioBooks today. Sandra Burr, despite the "spotlight" reviewer's opinion is totally wrong from this or any book for adults. She has no understanding of the characters or the book's subject matter, and her characterizations truly hurt the book. She is distracting when she gives a 19 year old young man the voice of a 12 year old girl....and everytime she does dialogue, my immediate impulse was to to track to down Paretsky's agent and demand she renegotiate her contract with Brilliance.

Angel City (The Angelus Trilogy), by Jon Steele

It’s been almost three years since we left Detective Jay Harper and high-priced escort Katherine Taylor on the esplanade of Lausanne Cathedral, bruised and battered from a biblical showdown with the Nephilim. Katherine has retreated to small-town life in the woods of Washington State with her son, Max—and a close protection detail of heavily-armed, elite members of the Swiss Guard. Harper is living in Paris, haunted by voices in his head and bone-tired after what turns out to be two and a half million years on Earth.

Though Katherine and Harper have been prevented from remembering each other , baby Max has unwittingly stirred the interest of vengeful spirits—and only a worldwide (and cosmic) effort to save his life will bring Harper and Katherine together again.

Meanwhile, from the shadows steps a defrocked priest named Astruc, whose face looks as if it has been clawed by some terrible beast and who hides his eyes behind blue lenses. He and his brilliant young ward, Goose, have discovered something unfathomable in the Catacombs under Paris, something that will confirm that “the time of the prophecy” is at hand. . . .

Electrifying from its explosive first scene to its unexpected and shocking conclusion, Angel City reunites the unforgettable characters from The Watchers to reveal more of the earthly—and otherworldly—mysteries of the Angelus trilogy.

From Booklist
In The Watchers (2012), Steele introduced us to Katherine Taylor, a high-end escort, and Jay Harper, who awakens one day with no memory of his past life. Working security for the U.S. Olympic Committee, trying to find a missing athlete, Harper instead finds Katherine and then begins to remember things, things he has no idea how he could possibly know. This second novel picks up the characters’ stories about three years after the end of The Watchers. Katherine is living in the U.S., quietly raising her son. Jay lives in France, still reeling from the mind-numbing discoveries he made in the previous book (including the revelation that he is apparently an angel). Does Jay have the spiritual strength to combat a new evil, one that could destroy the world? The first volume of a trilogy usually devotes substantial space to introducing characters, themes, story lines. Introductions completed, this second volume seriously ramps up the action: mysteries are explored but not yet fully explained, and the shocking final scenes are definitely intended to make us come back for the finale. Fans of The Watchers won’t want to miss this one. --David Pitt

“Steele’s sequel to 2012’s The Watchers does everything the middle of a trilogy should do…. a brutal cliffhanger… accessible to readers who missed the first book.” – Publishers Weekly

Great series. Can't wait for the final instalment
By Sharon
Prologue: The 13th Century, a Holy War between the Cathars and Crusaders in Montsegur, French Pyrenees is being fought. Or ... the followers of another religious faith including women, children and infants are being slaughtered in most horrific and torturous ways.

We are then launched into current times, 3 years on from the cataclysmic events in Lausanne, with a terrorist attack in Paris. Harper becomes involved and an extremely profound and evocative scene is played out with a child clinging to her mortally wounded father, and Harper's internal struggle to comply with orders or to help comfort a dying soul. Does he do the right thing?... What is the right thing ?

Katherine, is unknowingly being medicated with tea potions to control her memories as an overload of remembering would render her insane. She is living in Oregon, a 'safe town' with her 2 year old son Max, and Officer Anne Jannsen her designated personal Swiss guard. Oh and nearly forgot, Monsieur Booty !

Harper has had various assignments in many human bodies over the millennia and has been mind wiped, once again, for his current assignment. His actions result in endangering him in his mortal and immortal forms. How much time does he have left to save 'Paradise' from apocalyptic prophesy? How will he deal with the haunted memories surfacing from his body's former soul ?

Is Angel City as good as The Watchers? Definitely ! It has a different style to The Watchers which had a slower pace, haunting, ethereal with a blast of action. Angel City's plot has more complexity and darkness, and is pretty much more action based with strong horrific scenes of modern day terrorism being played out between the forces of good and evil. It also brings into play a lot more mythology which maybe a teaser for more of what's to come in the final instalment.

We are introduced to some new characters. I found the horribly scarred Astruc addictively mysterious. Who is he, and what does he want ? The same goes for his companion, an odd looking boy called Goose.

Although The Watchers could be read as a stand alone, Angel City cannot without the reader becoming confused and have no idea what s going on. Angel City does not end neatly but on a cliff hanger making it essential to read the trilogy in order of sequence.

I eagerly await 'The Way of Sorrows', and am pretty sure Jon Steele will deliver another magical masterpiece. The only drawback will be in this being the end to this trilogy.

Jon Steele writes with such causality and depth with the exceptionally compassionate vibe of one who has seen far more than one should and remain mentally intact. I also believe he has something to say within his novels but I don't want to dwell on that here. You either feel it or you don't. Either way Angel City is an exciting, suspenseful, fast paced read incorporating mythology, history and faith.

Whilst 'googling' Jon Steele I found several you tube videos with him introducing both novels and an interview conducted by blogger, 'For winter nights - A bookish blog'.

A very strong book 2 that stands on its own!
By Books and Lesser Evils!
Angel City by Jon Steele is book #2 in The Angelus Trilogy. I received my copy of the book as part of a Goodreads giveaway and it took me awhile to finish the book. I actually put it down after a hundred pages or so and could not continue. It took my awhile to figure out why and once I did I was able to restart the story and found myself involved and once again caring for the characters. I will explain that in a moment. But first, a little about Angel City and The Angelus Trilogy.

..."What is the day?" one said.
"Why should you care?" another answered.
"Because I should like to know the day of my death, if this is to be the day of my death."
"Then it is a Tuesday. I think."
Such fateful words were a soldier's words, the knight remembered thinking. And he remembered how he, too, tried to recall the day just in case this would be the day of his death. The fighter was correct, it was a Tuesday; first day of March. The day was named after the Norse god of war, Tiw; the month was named after the Roman god of war.
"Not a bad day to die," the knight said...

Angel City picks up where The Watchers; book one of The Angelus Trilogy leaves off. Years have passed and the two survivors of the attack upon Lausanne Cathedral by the dark Nephilim; Harper and Katherine have gone on with their lives. Their memories wiped clean of the past and the fallen friend Marc Rochat.
Katherine and her son Max have been moved to Washington State under the constant care of the Swiss Guard. Her every move watched and detailed. Those around her awaiting and preparing for every danger they know is coming.
Harper has returned to doing what he has always done. An angel who protects those in danger. Possessing a human body when it is close to death and then leaving it when it is again. For if Harper remains in the host body as it dies, he dies along with it. Only something has changed.

"You're telling me something happened to me during the cathedral job. Being exposed to the light...changed me."
"Actually, I'm not saying anything of the sort, Mr. Harper. I merely lay out the facts."
"What facts? That I bloody rose from the dead? That's not evolution, Inspector, that's a..."
"A what?"
"A miracle. And you and I know there's no such thing in paradise."...

Both something has changed and the carefully woven fabric of time and light that the Angels have wrapped around the world is unraveling and the war waged in the heavens has come down to Earth. Katherine is starting to remember. Harper is starting to remember. And the dangers that attacked them in the Lausanne Cathedral are strengthening to attack them again. Not only them but all the innocents who were born from the Angels. Innocents are being killed across the world and Katherine's baby Max is on the list.

Angel City is well written and as its own novel stands well. It is not just a bridge between book one and the upcoming finale in book three. The characters are expertly crafted and you can feel their struggle as they piece together memories and dreams of what once was and what may be coming.
What made this a difficult read for me at the outset was what was missing from this novel. That is Marc Rochat. The central character to book one, The Watchers, is such a powerful voice in the Angelus Trilogy that he is missed in his absence here. There are references to him throughout but for those who read book one, you know how strong of a character he was. Once I go past the fact that he died and the others lived I was able to continue the story.
Angel City is well written fantasy book with imperfect Angels and even less perfect humans who find a way save both the Heavens and the Earth.

Amazing book, and great compliment to Eat Right for Your Type!
By Eric Morrison
This is a great reference book that does an excellent job in outlining the best (and worst) foods for each blood type regarding fatigue. It provides fantastic information about how stress is actually created, and what is happening in the body from a physiological perspective. Dr D'Adamo outlines the causes of fatigue, and makes some great points. If anybody has ever followed the Blood Type Diet, they know the dramatic difference it makes. If somebody is battling with fatigue, this is the extra step that can help alleviate so many uncomfortable symptoms. There is a book for arthritis, cancer, allergies, and many more- which are all golden references in the D'Adamo library.

Regarding other reviews which might downsize Dr D'Adamo's work- Dr D'Adamo began all of his research decades ago based upon medical studies that show tremendous blood type/disease correlations. Everything in his books can be found in medical reference libraries and detailed scientific studies. There is nothing to hide, people are just too coward to look at the facts for themselves. Heroin addicts crave heroin- is that because Heroin is good for them, and their body is "trying to tell them something?" Let's put on our thinking caps, people.

Professional 2-in-1 Spring-Arm Magnifier Lamp - 5" Lens - 5-Diopter -...
By Lynda Norton
These books make sense, I am following the diet (not perfectly) but I have lost over 30 lbs in a year with avoiding foods that are on the Avoid list and making a few adjustments. Now in saying that, there are foods on the avoid list that I LOVE and if I want to have that particular food I'll have it, but I don't eat it very often. It is GREAT! I feel better and 4 sizes smaller too...I'm 58 years old and was getting (or got) the middle age SPREAD and it was horrible. I'm happy now.

Also, I don't cook the foods in the cookbook but I eat correctly with the recipes already like and use all the time.
