Star Witness, by D. W. Buffa

Attorney Joseph Antonelli tackles a case overflowing with greed and glamour, moviemaking, and murder in this new thriller in the Edgar Award-nominated series.

Star Witness is about a man on trial for murder-a man recognized as one of the film industry's most successful writer/ directors, a man of almost mythic drive and talent, and someone who looks more guilty with every passing witness. Attorney Joseph Antonelli-suave, philosophical, fearless-takes up the director's defense for the murder of his wife, the actress every woman wants to be and every man wants to possess. Despite Antonelli's examination of the prosecution's witnesses, the jury finds fewer and fewer reasons to doubt. Then the director shows Antonelli the script he considers his masterpiece-a re-imagining of Orson Welles's Citizen Kane-with a visionary film director as its hero. In this story-within-a-story, the accused reveals his version of the tragedy-the secrets of his marriage, and the ominous events that led to his wife's death. In it we see the way art can imitate life-and unmask a killer even the court can't find.

Star Witness is a stunning novel about the nature of fame and the ever-confusing intersection of truth and fantasy, dream and desire-a rich tale of Hollywood unlike one you've read in many years.

Amazon.com Review
Both a legal thriller and a Hollywood novel, Star Witness recounts a sensational murder and trial at the very pinnacle of the movie business. It's also a meditation on the magic--and the deceptive power--of the movies. Mary Margaret Flanders, the most charismatic star in Hollywood, is found nude with her throat cut, floating in the swimming pool of her palatial mansion. The chief suspect is her husband, the brilliant director Stanley Roth. Enter Joseph Antonelli, one of the nation's top criminal-defense lawyers (and the star of four previous D.W. Buffa tales), who is soon grappling with vicious Hollywood politics, a huge media circus, and a client so complex and unpredictable that even his own lawyer doubts his innocence.

Buffa's courtroom scenes are full of authentic details that reflect his years as a defense lawyer, though they crackle a little less than in his other books. And some readers will surely bog down in his distinctive prose style, with its curious, archaic formality ("She was about to tell me something more about the difficulties with which Stanley Roth had to deal"). Nonetheless, this ambitious book offers many pleasures as it plays with our obsessions with celebrities and the movies. Its solution will keep you guessing right up to the last page, and perhaps even beyond. --Nicholas H. Allison

From Publishers Weekly
This uneven fifth novel in the Joseph Antonelli series (The Legacy, etc) has the colorful trial lawyer defending a legendary Hollywood director and studio mogul accused of murdering his movie star wife. Mary Margaret Flanders is killed just before filming the final scenes of a major new movie with her husband's studio. Stanley Roth, her husband, is known for his volatile temper, and becomes the leading suspect. Antonelli takes the case, and though he is sure that his client is innocent, he can't pin down the real killer. The list of suspects includes Roth's partner, who wants to take control of the studio; Flanders's college professor ex-hubby (father of the star's only child); and a blackmailing wannabe screenwriter cop, who had once been to the couple's house to look into Flanders's domestic violence complaint. Central to all this is Roth's obsessive conviction that the entire crime is a replay of his own masterpiece screenplay, Blue Zephyr, which he has yet to make into a movie. While the plot is solid, the first half of the thriller is considerably slowed by windy, repetitious description and exposition ("That's what she was: a young woman in love, but not with a man-with a camera: any camera, not just a motion picture camera.... That's what she lived for: to be on camera, to be on film..."). The pace does pick up when the action shifts to the courtroom, but this effort isn't up to Buffa's best.

From Booklist
Lawyer Joseph Antonelli is contentedly living across the bay from San Francisco when a sordid, high-profile case pulls him to Los Angeles. A famous studio head has been accused of murdering his much-lusted-after wife--who's also the biggest movie star in his stable. The evidence is so damning that the producer is tried and convicted in the tabloids, and even his friends are inclined to believe he did it. Against his better judgment, but intrigued by the lifestyles of the bad and the beautiful, Antonelli agrees to defend the producer. It's a tough job made tougher by a proud and uncooperative client, and by the self-interested social climbers who make up his peer group in a town where "the truth of a thing is measured by how often it gets repeated." How do you stay grounded in real life when your client acts like he's in a movie? Although Buffa writes like he's getting paid by the word, he overcomes a slow start to create compelling complications and, eventually, even suspense. It's fun to see the self-confident Antonelli exploring the parallels between acting and lawyering, and some of the courtroom scenes fairly crackle. But outside the courtroom, the action still drags. Buffa's idea of Hollywood is dated, and with few plot twists, it's a coin toss whether we're anxious to learn the ending or anxious to be done with the book. The Antonelli series has drawn a steadily growing audience through three previous installments, but this one is something of a misstep. Keir Graff

And the winner is....? The reader.
By John R. Linnell
I have read this author's other books and enjoyed them all. Star Witness is a different breed of cat than the others. It is not really a court room drama although a murder trial is one of the central venues. It is a murder mystery and even when the book is finished, you will be wondering about the identity of the murderer. It also is a commentary on the movie business and the rarified atmosphere that those who "make pictures" live in. Joseph Antonelli, criminal defense lawyer extrodonaire returns again as counsel and foil for Stanely Roth, a famous film producer, studio head and the accused murderer of his famous actress wife. The facts are not in his favor. His wife has been killed (her throat was cut) in their Hollywood mansion. He claims to have left for work very early and had slept in another bedroom so as not to disturb his wife and was unaware that she had been killed. Blood stained clotheing is found in his clohes hamper. The clothes are his. The blood is hers. There is no evidence that anyone other than the maid and Mr. Roth were on the premises during the time she was killed. Things seem pretty open and shut to the police who arrest him and charge him with murder. With that as the background, Buffa spins a very interesting story of Hollywood, its characters, its foibles and its fables. The courtroom work assumes a substancial amount of literary license as it relates to the manner in which the attorneys ask questions, but it is certainly more interesting than sticking to the real rules. It is a book which keeps moving, asks questions and leaves you wondering and thinking about it after it is over. Not a bad result.

"Antonelli...quick-witted, talented & crafty...you want him on your side"
By Russell A. Rohde MD
"Star Witness", Dudley W. Buffa, NY, GP Putnam's Sons, 2003 ISBN 0-399-153034-X, HC, 388 pg., 9 1/4" x 6 1/4". This 5th of 7 Joseph Antonelli novels finds the protagonist criminal defense attorney musing over the death of Hollywood star Mary Margaret Flanders, a.k.a. Marian Walsh, whose nude body was found in the pool of her Beverly Hills mansion. The funeral was shown on TV & that night Antonelli is awakened by the star's husband, Stanley Roth, who solicits him to become his defense sttorney. He leaves his live-in love Marissa (Kane) in Sausalito & is flown to Los Angeles where he meets the notables: -- husband Stanley, head of Blue Zephyr Pictures; Michael Wirthlin & Louis Griffin, associates; Walker Bradley, actor & Julie Evans, executive assistant to Roth.

We learn Mary Margaret died violently, a throat slashing, and that husband Stanley, the only known person in the home was prone to violent temper. We are introduced to the courtroom Judge Hon. Rudolph G. Honigman & the aggressive Prosecutrix Annabelle Van Roten. Other principals include Jack Walsh, dead star's father, & Detective Crenshaw. Just when you think the plot is over, it abruptly changes direction & we find unsuspected surprizes that nicely tie up the loose ends gratifyingly. This, of the 6 Antonelli novels I've read to date, is the finest & most satisfying. The book deals with revenge, power, position & character in a brilliant manner.

Everfree, by Nick Sagan

In 2003, Nick Sagan exploded onto the scene with Idlewild, a highly original debut novel that inspired Stephen Baxter to say, "Sagan has a ferocious imagination." Edenborn returned to Sagan's hyperimaginative world with a stylish, thrilling work that was hailed by critics and embraced by readers. With Everfree, Sagan concludes the trilogy that is destined to become a classic.

As Everfree opens, a small group of humans has survived the apocalyptic epidemic called Black Ep, a disease that ravaged the world and left them alone on Earth. Their conflicting ideas about how a new, much less populated planet ought to be governed, however, are a source of terrible strife. The early "post humans" believed in The Doctrine: The post-plague world is collective. We're all in this together. Let's look out for each other, share the dirty work, give the needy what they need. Inevitably, though, as more survivors are roused from their frozen sleep, there are those who disagree. People who remember power are waking up to a new world, and they do not intend to wait their turn . . .

From Publishers Weekly
Though Sagan's latest future thriller is supposed to complete a trilogy that began with Idlewild and Edenborn, it's stuffed with ideas that veer off into fascinating but underdeveloped tangents. The genetically altered young Post Humans of Sagan's first books have gone through their bloody personal crises and now have settled down to revive the people who had themselves frozen to escape a deadly universal plague. Since the ones who could afford cryogenic sleep were the most "successful," they tend to be insanely competitive, unwilling to be guided by their saviors. And so factions begin plotting to take control of the new utopia and to revive private armies for rival communities. The book ricochets through its complicated plot in short, snappy chapters, most of them dictated by Hal, the Post Humans' chief of security. Hal's an agreeably cynical observer, and his lively sections summarize the action well. However, so much is going on and flying off in so many directions, that the book finally reads like a tantalizing summary of a really interesting novel. (May)

From Booklist
In light of the complexity and originality of Idlewild (2003) and Edenborn (2004), the conclusion to their story rather disappoints. The Black Ep plague has wiped out humanity, except for the cryopreserved. The posthumans--the few genetically engineered to survive the plague--have begun to revive the cryopreserved in the U.S., frozen for 42 years, only to discover that since they had been the wealthy and the powerful before the plague, most of them want to resume control. The president expects to lead, of course, but has a rival, and both would-be top dogs use fear to control their followers. When U.S. society seems to be imploding, the posthumans go to Europe and China to revive humans there. Unfortunately, Sagan has let inconsistencies and facile solutions into the story and reduced some characters into caricatures. On the other hand, Halloween, the principal protagonist throughout, wrestles with his internal demons, thereby becoming an even more convincing character. A finale that resembles a weak middle volume more than a stirring conclusion. Sally Estes

AWESOME
By JC
My copy is a little tattered because I took it with me everywhere, hoping I'd get a chance to read just one more chapter between the things I had to do during the day. I had a blast reading it -- it really puts you in the post-plague, post-cure world where communities should be happy but instead, they head straight toward war. Suspense, characterization, great voice, a riveting story -- it's all there. I especially felt a deeper bond with Halloween and surprisingly, Isaac and Sloane.

I loved the stories of the plague survivors -- like the guy who's wife sacrificed herself to save him from the plague and now he desperately needs to find out what happened to her. Or the chauffeur who impersonated his boss to save himself. Or the folks who believe Hal and his pals are angels fulfilling a biblical prophesy. I also loved the sprinkling of historical and cultural references made by the narrators. It really gave me the sense that the post-human creators did everything they could to instill the importance of history and continuity and a sense of loss for civilization.

I just finished the book and it feels like a good friend just moved out of town. I want another Halloween/post-human story.

If you're wondering whether to read Everfree, do it -- it's a great ride. If you're wondering whether to start the series, run and buy Idlewild. You're in for a treat.

Imaginative and quirky
By Bookreporter
Looking back in my mental trivia file, I'm struck by how prophetic Nick Sagan's first claim to fame turned out to be. No, I don't mean his being the son of the last century's most likeable astronomer, the late Carl Sagan. It's young Nick's voice saying, "Hello from the children of planet Earth" on a recording that is still traveling in distant space on NASA's Voyager 1.

Those simple, welcoming words connect so powerfully with Sagan's recent emergence from the often thankless role of a Hollywood script and screen writer to become one of the most exciting new voices in science fiction.

That's because in EVERFREE --- the latest in his "post humans" series, following IDLEWILD (2003) and EDENBORN (2004) --- the theme continues to be about children maturing in a vastly changed world, facing a future riddled with social, psychological and genetic booby traps.

Set on an Earth still barely recognizable after a devastating pandemic called Black Ep, the bioengineered super-children of EDENBORN have taken their place among the fragile remains of human society as cautious and often unwilling leaders who seek to avoid the administrative mistakes, power-games and excesses of conventional government.

They know better than to revisit the old utopian schemes of humanity's past, but the idea of Darwinian struggle and anarchy is equally repulsive. So as good kids must do, they work out a precarious compromise based partly on the original model of the commonwealth. Star Trek's Mr. Spock would be impressed at how closely the post-human pattern for life follows the Vulcan path of dynamic balance.

But as a loose-knit global family of wildly diverse personalities themselves, the young adults and their brilliant but aging and stressed parents soon face challenges that no amount of hard-science training could anticipate.

It was the advances of hard science that made the EVERFREE storyline possible, offering plague-ravaged humans at the end of EDENBORN the hope of future healthy lives through cryogenic preservation --- the old but appealing idea of deep-freezing the terminally ill until their ailments can be reversed or cured. Now armed with medical knowledge to save all but the most advanced plague cases, Sagan's gifted post humans are faced with myriad practical and ethical questions as they struggle to decide who should be revived first.

Of course, the technical issues are no longer in question. Instead, the colossal problem threatening to tear the fledgling new society apart is a very human one --- that of integrating newly "thawed" folks into an environment where their previous wealth and power are meaningless. The post humans' we-are-all-in-this-together philosophy runs smack into old-fashioned rugged individualism, and the two mindsets mix like oil and water.

And that's what EVERFREE is most memorably about. Sagan brilliantly treads the thin ice of futuristic ethical comment, daring to propose scenarios that show us at our all-too-human worst, even as we cling to the shreds of social idealism.

With his characteristic crazy-quilt juggling of points of view as each super-kid has his or her say, Sagan's EVERFREE brings us to the brink of new hope without quite getting there. Along the way he's introduced old-style real conflict with weapons that kill, as well as adventure, revelation, romance, a tantalizing brush with alien contact, and even new offspring.

And that's where the story just stops, leaving the reader on an unresolved chord of anticipation. So if this really was intended to conclude a trilogy, let's hope Sagan changes his mind. He may have become a victim of his own success, but there are far worse fates for a new author! Personally, I can't wait to hear more from his imaginative and quirky post humans.

Really enjoyed Everfree after devouring the first two books in this trilogy! Nick Sagan crafts some delightfully dark and complex characters throughout this series. I finished all three books in about a week because I couldn't put them down!
I'm wondering if this is the last book in the series or will there be more? Agh! I want to read more about the future of Earth!!

Hundred-Dollar Baby (Spenser Mystery), by Robert B. Parker

A client from a decades-old case reaches out to Boston PI Spenser-but can he rescue troubled April Kyle once more?

Longtime Spenser fans will remember that once upon a time, though not so long ago, there was a girl named April Kyle-a beautiful teenage runaway who turned to prostitution to escape her terrible family life. The book was 1982's Ceremony, and, thanks to Spenser, April escaped Boston's "Combat Zone" for the relative safety of a high-class New York City bordello. April resurfaced in Taming a Sea-Horse, again in dire need of Spenser's rescue-this time from the clutches of a controlling lover. But April Kyle's return in Hundred-Dollar Baby is nothing short of shocking.

When a mature, beautiful, and composed April strides into Spenser's office, the Boston PI barely hesitates before recognizing his once and future client. Now a well-established madam herself, April oversees an upscale call-girl operation in Boston's Back Bay. Still looking for Spenser's approval, it takes her a moment before she can ask him, again, for his assistance. Her business is a success; what's more, it's an all-female enterprise. Now that some men are trying to take it away from her, she needs Spenser.

April claims to be in the dark about who it is that's trying to shake her down, but with a bit of legwork and a bit more muscle, Spenser and Hawk find ties to organized crime and local kingpin Tony Marcus, as well as a scheme to franchise the operation across the country. As Spenser again plays the gallant knight, it becomes clear that April's not as innocent as she seems. In fact, she may be her own worst enemy.

From Publishers Weekly
April Kyle, the damsel in distress that Spenser rescued in two earlier books, Ceremony (1982) and Taming a Sea Horse (1986), again turns to the iconic Boston PI for help in the 34th entry in Parker's popular series. Cynical yet romantic, Spenser easily handles the immediate threat of some men trying to muscle in on the high-class Boston whorehouse April is running. Unfortunately, that isn't the real problem, and Spenser without much surprise finds that April, the thugs and everyone else involved is lying to him. Instead of walking away, Spenser continues to probe, following trails that lead to New York, a con artist, mob connections and other complications. This is vintage Parker, with Spenser exchanging witty dialogue with the faithful Hawk, sexy dialogue with his beloved Susan and smart-alecky dialogue with cops and villains. The old pros can make it look easy, and that goes for both the author and his hero as they deliver the goods smoothly and with inimitable style. (Oct.)

From Booklist
April Kyle is the young runaway Spenser rescued from Boston's notorious Combat Zone in 1982's Ceremony. Bereft of conventional options, he left her in the care of Patricia Utley, operator of an upscale New York bordello. Now she is back in Boston operating a branch office for Utley and needs Spenserian assistance. Some locals are trying to move in on her operation. Perhaps Spenser and Hawk can dissuade them? They make quick work of the muscle but learn the catalyst for the takeover may have a more complex motive. April knows more than she has revealed to him about the source of the threat and her complicity. Spenser's frustration with Kyle's dishonesty and his avuncular need to help forces him to keep digging. The latest entry in the long-running series finds Parker revisiting familiar themes such as the often-deleterious effect that families have on their members and whether the damage can ever be truly undone. The banter between Spenser and his significant other, Susan Silverman, and the imperturbable Hawk--typically a highlight of the series--seems flat here, even veering toward cliche. Still, no Spenser novel fails to be entertaining, but Parker just may be doing better work these days with his two other series characters, Sunny Randall and Jesse Stone. It's a Comfortable Long Term Relationship
By Lisa Shea
Spenser is really a series that you have to read from the beginning if you want to understand what is going on. Hundred-Dollar Baby is no exception. April Kyle, the lead character from Ceremony and Taming a Sea Horse, is back again - now running her own whorehouse in Boston. Unfortunately, someone's trying to take a cut of her profits, and she doesn't want any "men" interfering with her female-only business.

This is "comfort zone" for Spenser - many of his cases have involved feminists who insist they want to do things with women only, and end up relying on Spenser for help. There's not even any preamble in this one - April's in his office from moment one of the story, needing Spenser to rescue her from trouble. And while she claims she doesn't really need any man-help, it turns out her entire plan for life was laid out by a man and she had a male bouncer keeping her safe.

Of course, as is traditional, things get messy quickly, Spenser has no idea what's going on, so he randomly follows people to see what happens. He stirs up some hornets nests. Susan and he talk dirty and have a sex life that's rather active for someone who, according to stated birthdates, has just turned 70. But we suspend disbelief and understand that even though he was 37 in 1973, he hasn't quite aged "normally" since then.

The key here is that if you've read the series all along, when just like long-term married couples, you are extremely familiar with the people and situations. You know Teddy Sapp, Patricia Utley, Hawk, and other people who move in and out of the story - you know their ups, downs, quirks, loves. It's like when an older couple has a conversation along the lines of "Remember that time in Paris?" "I loved the whipped cream". They don't need to say any more, they both know the whole story and meaning and why it's relevant to the current situation. The same is true here - you know that Susan's look is palpable, you've heard that 20 times. You know Hawk can easily switch between high English and low po-boy talk.

So you don't read Spenser books for shocking gore or Philip K Dick like twists. You often can outguess what is going to happen. If anything, Hundred-Dollar Baby is more comfy than several previous ones. No front-page topics here, just another whore story where Spenser tries to give them a hand, defeating thugs who try to take him in, and talking with various underworld types. No new Russian mob, no terrorists, no new characters at all, really. No new locations - you stick right around Boston and a little of New York.

Interestingly, depending on your point of view, this can be good or bad. I really liked this book a lot - I thought it had a different ending than most Spenser books tend to, and it didn't do the "bring in 20 characters for a hoe-down" which had been done several times in the past. The few characters brought in were important to the story. I appreciated that he didn't re-hash items (like the Palpable Susan Eyes) that often get mentioned in every single book.

On the other hand, my boyfriend, who's also an avid Spenser fan and has read all the books, seen all the tv-movies etc., felt there was little going on here. It's more of a short story of "What happened to April" with little development, character, or plot. He felt the storyline was so broadcasted that you could sort of read along in your sleep, since you knew pretty much what each character would do and say.

So there you go. If you're looking for a cutting edge, new story with intricate characters and 24-alive plotlines, this probably isn't the book for you. If you're looking to pick up your first Parker book, I wouldn't start here. It'd be like walking into a 40th wedding anniversary without knowing anyone and missing out on all the in-jokes and story backgrounds. But if you've been reading Spenser all along - or are willing to spend a few weeks catching yourself up on the storyline, this really is a nice continuation. It's a closing out of a story we spent a lot of time with, and it adds a little more depth to Spenser's character.

Cat Speak: How To Learn It, Speak It, And Use It To Have A Happy, Healthy, Well-Mannered Cat, by Bash Dibra, Elizabeth Randolph

Cats are intelligent and reasonable animals, capable of enormous affection and loyalty and willing to cooperate with their owners-if asked to do so in a polite manner. With dogs, one commands; with cats, one suggests. Knowing which "suggestions" to make, and how to make them, is the key.

In CatSpeak, Bash Dibra shows cat owners how to do the previously unthinkable: train their cats! Understanding feline body language, facial expressions, vocal signals, and the instinctive behaviors that make up CatSpeak, the unique language of cats, is vital to the endeavor. So are the three P's: patience, persistence, and praise. The author takes the reader step-by-step in forming a new, mutually satisfying human-feline relationship.

With easy-to-follow instructions and complete, up-to-the-minute information, CatSpeak provides everything you need to know to have a happy, healthy, well-mannered cat.

From Publishers Weekly
Those seeking to teach their cats not to scratch furniture, chew on houseplants or indulge in other unacceptable behavior can learn how in Cat Speak: How to Learn It, Speak It, and Use It to Have a Happy, Healthy, Well-Mannered Cat. Animal behaviorist and trainer Bash Dibra (Dog Training by Bash) explains how to understand feline body language, facial expressions, vocal signals and other instinctive behaviors. Using the three Ps patience, persistence, praise and the three Cs compassion, care, concern Dibra offers a simple manual on how to get the most out of animal-feline relationships.

From Library Journal
Dibra developed his talent for communicating with animals early in life under tragic circumstances: he interacted with guard dogs in the prison camp in Yugoslavia where his family was held after escaping from Albania. Since 1991, he has collaborated with Randolph, another talented dog trainer and author, offering commonsense information to the average pet owner. Having addressed dog owners in DogSpeak (LJ 9/15/99), they here teach cat owners how to communicate with their pets using easy-to-follow techniques. By learning to interpret a pet's body language, facial expressions, and vocal signals, owners can teach it an amazing repertoire of behaviors. Cats have a reputation for being independent and untrainable, a myth Dibra puts to rest by showing owners how to build a relationship with their felines based on understanding and trust, with a healthy dollop of patience, persistence, and praise. Recommended for all public libraries. Edell M. Schaefer, Brookfield P.L., WI
Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Dibra, an animal behaviorist and "celebrated dog trainer to the stars," now turns his attention to cats, wisely noting that whereas one gives a dog a command, a cat only listens to suggestions. Still, according to Dibra, there's much that can be done to adjust a cat's behavior using the "three Ps" --patience, persistence, and praise. Among the topics covered are feline society and behavior, various breeds, how to choose a pet, "the homecoming," health issues, and "catspeak" (the ways your cat communicates and how you can communicate right back). Final chapters deal with addressing particular behavior problems and teaching your cat tricks. This is a great basic primer, but owners who have had particular problems with their cats may mutter "tried it; doesn't work" as Dibra and coauthor Randolph offer solutions to various offensive behaviors. As for getting the cat to retrieve or jump through a hoop (yes, literally), it's more likely to be the owners who are doing the jumping. Ilene Cooper

CAT ADOPTION 101
By Brooser Bear
This is a comprehensive book about the intial stages of selecting and adopting a cat, how to take care of it, and how to give it rudimentary training in behaving itself. It does not go beyond that. The style of writing is easygoing and accessible, but it offers no spark of insight into feline behavior you might expect from a great animal trainer. If you know anyting about caring for a cat, this book will offer little or nothing new, and an encyclopedia like Cats for Dummies might be a bit more worthwhile since it comes packed with more data. For those of you seeking quality writing about cats, "Do Cats Think?" is a much better book written by a naturalist with a passion for felines.

A dog trainer does NOT a cat trainer make.
By A Customer
Dibra may be the big Hollywood dog trainer but he doesn't know cats. He and Randolph don't make a smooth transition into cat expertise very convincingly. I found myself repeatedly thinking I was reading old cliche information rather than firsthand knowledge.
The writing style is clumsy and outdated and didn't tell me anything I didn't already know about my cats. This book confirmed what I always suspected about so called "trainers to the stars". They spend too much time rubbing elbows with the famous and not enough time developing true expertise.

The author needs to check his facts
By A Customer
I haven't finished the book, so I might revise my review later, but so far (about halfway through the book) I haven't learned anything new. In addition, I've found several bits of information that are either outdated or completely wrong. There is no bibliography in the book, which leads me to believe there was no research beyond the author's observations. In my opinion, a much better book on cat behavior is "Think Like a Cat" by Pam Johnson-Bennett

3-of Clancy's best, BAR NONE, a truly worthwhile buy
By Jeff Edwards
For sentimental reasons only, I view 'Hunt For Red October' as Clancy's best book, but these 3 cannot be far behind, especially 'Clear & Present Danger' and 'The Sum Of All Fears'. Absolutely riviting novels that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Clancy truly has his finger squarely on the pulse of what is going on in the world -- or what COULD go on.
'Patriot Games' is a phenomenal story of revenge from an IRA Terrorist who's plot to assassinate Charles & Di is thwarted by Jack Ryan, who is completely unaware of the horrific consequences of his actions. GREAT read.
'Clear & Present Danger' is a VERY complicated story of the war on drugs and a few people in high places making some pretty rash decisions that creates a completely incredible situation and Clancy ties it all together in one of his all-time best stories. Highly recommended.
'The Sum Of All Fears' is another Clancy rocket-of-a-novel with many plots and sub-plots, all of which are tied neatly together in the end revolving around a few middle-eastern bad guys who get their dirty fingers on an actual Israeli atomic bomb, converting it into a thermo-nuclear device, and their plans of actually using it on American soil. A true Clancy masterpiece.
All three of these books are worth buying, but if you can manage to grab this particular book with ALL of them, do NOT hesitate, just DO IT! Any Clancy fan worth his/her salt cannot call their collection complete without this. Just hours and hours of absolute thrilling reading.

If you saw the movies this is your chance to read the books
By Lawrance Bernabo
There certainly seems to be neither rhyme nor reason to how they throw together Tom Clancy novels together in these collections. Here we have the 3rd, 5th and 6th of Clancy's novels, which are the 2nd, 4th and 5th of the Jack Ryan novels (except that while "Patriot Games" was written 2nd it actually takes place before the "1st" Jack Ryan novel, "The Hunt for Red October"--are you taking notes?). However, the two common denominators are that of the first six Clancy novels these three are the three better ones and that all three books have been turned into films.

"Patriot Games" explains why the English keep calling Ryan "Sir John" in "The Hunt for Red October." I always fancied that Clancy had written this novel first (or, at least had the idea for the story first), but that having Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth be characters in a fictional novel was frowned upon; however, I consider the relationship between the Ryans and the Royals to be one of the most compelling aspects of the novel. Certainly "Patriot Games" shows a great leap forward in Clancy's writing style. The novel literally begins with a bang as Ryan thwarts an attack by a I.R.A. splinter group. What happens afterwards brings him into the fold of the C.I.A. The ending of the novel, decidedly different from that of the film version, refutes the idea that Clancy is a reactionary conservative.

"Clear and Present Danger" presents a scenario that remains one of the most attractive as a real world solution to a continuing problem, namely the use of the U.S. military to put the Columbian drug cartels out of business. The problem, of course, is that the President decides to make this a covert mission, which provides ample opportunity for things to go too far. This is the novel that introduces Ding Chavez to John Clark, and Clark to Ryan for that matter. In terms of the characters in the Jack Ryan novels, "Clear and Present Danger" is the one that probably has the most resonance with the rest of the series. Much is made of the way Clancy incorporates cutting edge technology into his narratives, but his strength has always been his characters. There is no better example of this aspect than in the beginning of "Clear and Present Danger," when Clancy introduces us to the character of Red Wegener with such wonderful detail that we are surprised to discover he ends up being a minor character in the novel.

"The Sum of All Fears" is one of Clancy's novels where you certainly hope that he is not prescient. Middle Eastern terrorists get a hold of a nuclear weapon and decide to detonate it at the Super Bowl. However, this is not a simple act of terrorism but part of a larger game that seeks to have the United States and the Soviet Union skip over a return to the Cold War and go right for a nuclear exchange. Meanwhile, Jack Ryan is caught in the switches as a new president comes into office and his National Security Advisor wants our hero's head on a platter. When the bomb detonates events escelate beyond the speed of those on both sides to process the information and make decisions than hurtle the world towards oblivion.

As always, you are urged to read all of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan novels in order even though what we have here qualifies as the essence of the first part of the Jack Ryan saga. After this point, following an interlude with the first John Clark novel, we move from Jack Ryan the CIA years to Jack Ryan the White House years. Although his recent novels have seen like they were written by rote, these three novels will more than evidence why Clancy has a devote following who love to consume his massive tomes as soon as they come out in hardback.

Great Books, Great Value
By Adam Dukovich
This product contains three of the most action packed novels by Tom Clancy: Patriot Games, a book about Irish terrorists bent on killing Jack Ryan, which is far superior to the movie; Clear and Present Danger, which is deeper than the movie, but slower moving, and The Sum of All Fears, which is destined to the theater, has a plot of peace in the Middle East and an excellent ending. Well worth the price.

Pursuit, by Karen Robards

When rookie lawyer Jessica Ford gets the call from her boss, John Davenport, the senior partner at the illustrious law firm for which she works, she can tell he is well on his way to being drunk. He needs Jess to meet First Lady Annette Cooper, for whom Davenport is a personal lawyer, at a Washington, D.C., hotel. Jess is thrilled: this high-profile assignment must mean that she’s earned her boss’s trust and she’s on her way to bigger things. But unfortunately, bigger isn’t always better. Jess doesn’t remember much — only that in the course of the late-night meeting with Annette Cooper, she ended up in the backseat of a car, speeding off into the darkness. All Jess knows is that the car crashed en route, and the other three passengers were killed, including the First Lady. Badly injured, Jess is the only survivor of what is trumpeted around the world as a tragic accident. Although she has no memory about the events leading up to the accident, Jess is still bothered by one question: Was it really an accident? The Secret Service agent on the case, Mark Ryan, gets the feeling that Jess is hiding something. As his suspicions grow, Jess’s world starts falling apart. In fact, everyone who might possibly know the details about the First Lady’s last few hours starts turning up dead. And then Jess understands: If she remembers that night, she’ll be dead too. Terrified and certain that the First Lady’s death was no accident, Jess has only Mark Ryan to turn to...

Jessica Ford is a smart, quiet, and ambitious young lawyer working for one of the largest firms in Washington, D.C. Her boss, John Davenport, is a high roller in politics and good friends with the First Lady, Annette Cooper. When he can’t make it to a bar where Annette is hiding from her Secret Service detail, he calls Jess and sends her over to bundle Annette into a cab. The next thing Jess knows, she’s the sole survivor of a fiery car crash. As the country mourns the First Lady, Jess begins to think the car crash was a cover-up for more than just a drug deal. Suddenly she and Secret Service agent Mark Ryan are on the lam and unsure of whom they can trust. Everyone they know is a suspect, and Jess can’t rely on anyone, not even Mark, as they try to evade the government agents on their tail who have only one goal: to make sure Jess keeps her mouth shut. Who can Jess turn to, and how far up does this conspiracy go? A tense and erotic political thriller sure to be as popular as Robards’ previous novels. --Hilary Hatton

pretty good read
By bijou2311
As several other reviewers have summarized the book very nicely, I'll be very brief - basically Jessica's boss calls her in the middle of the night telling her she has to go meet the First Lady. Jessica does this, but things go wrong when there is a horrible car accident that kills everyone (including the First Lady) except Jessica. The car accident is only the beginning of the trouble that now hunts Jessica and she has to decide who she can trust.

I have to say I enjoyed the book and read it very quickly. It was obvious to me who was the main bad guy almost from the beginning, but there was still the suspense of who was what side. While the story (especially the romance) sometimes felt rushed, it was still enjoyable. All in all, even though it wasn't the most believable book I've read, it was a good light read.

Wonderful Book
By Elaine C McTyer
This novel is very reminiscent of her earlier novels. I thoroughly enjoyed it. In these times it was more believable than it would have been 20 yrs ago. The mystery was excellent and the romance was good. This is what a Karen Robards novel should be like.

Jessica Ford is a young lawyer working her way up in a dog eat dog world. She has decided she will do what it takes to get ahead at the prestigious firm where she is employed. Jessica comes from a working family and if it takes working 24 hours a day she will do it. The rest of her family is made up of gorgeous women including her mother, but Jess feels left out in the looks department she is small and wears glasses. Nevertheless, her brains and determination are better than most, and so when her boss calls late at night and asks her to pick up the first-lady and see her home in a limo, Jessica hurries out to the hotel to pick her up. Nothing goes right, the first-lady is drinking heavily and seems scared and determined to escape the surveilence of the Secret Service. The next thing she sees is a fire and feels unable to move toward it. Laying on the ground she is found by the head of Mrs. Cooper's Secret Service. The limo is totally destroyed by fire and everyone in it are dead except Jess. Jess is quarrentined from the press and almost as soon as she opens her eyes she sees a man dressed like the SS trying to inject something into her IV. She screams and rolls off the bed just as Mark Ryan runs into her room. No one believes her and she doesn't know who to trust. She remembers things that tell her the accident was no accident. But who to trust, and who to tell? Definitely not the SS.

Mark Ryan is the head of the SS assigned to the first-lady, Annette Cooper. He knows she has a drug problem, so he thinks the accident was due to her wanting to score some drugs. However, little things do bother him. He trusts the SS and they have never had a traitor working for them. He knows Jess is lying when she says she doesn't remember and so he will watch her closely. Then people around Jess and the first-lady start dying and Mark wants to know, what is going on? But the more he pushes her the more Jess doesn't trust him. Mark is used to covering up for the president and his wife and is determined that whatever happened, it will not touch the President or the SS.

The action is fast, the story is interesting, and I did enjoy it, very much. I recommend it highly if you enjoyed her earlier books.

Suspense? Yes! Romance? No!...
By krissy
I've come to the conclusion that Karen Robards would like to switch genres. If that's the case I wish she would just do it already! I'm tired of buying her books expecting the romance to play an equal part to the suspense, when, lately, it's just been an afterthought! She used to be able to combine the two beautifully but hasn't done it well since Night Whispers. (For you romance fans out there, I'd suggest going back and reading her old stuff, if you haven't already. You won't be disappointed.) I think part of the problem is she started writing books (like this one) that don't lend themselves well to believable romance. Pursuit is an apt title for this one because it was just that. Non-stop, beginning to end. The one small break they did have (towards the end) is where she decided to throw-in the one love scene. When that was over, so was the break. (I mean immediately!) These type of wall-to-wall action books are great for the suspense fans but not so much for the romance fans.

That being said, I did give this book 3 1/2 stars. (Amazon really needs to start allowing the 1/2 star ratings!) As little a part as the romance played, she still managed to create some chemistry between our hero and heroine, and the one love scene was pretty hot! And as for the suspense part, I thought she did great with that. She certainly kept me turning pages! It was an amazingly fast, fun, and exciting read. I just had one big beef with the character of Jess that kept me from really liking her and that was her vacillating between trust and distrust of the hero. It was completely believable at first, but after the guy has saved her life about 4 or 5 times, not to mention the many scrapes and jams he rescued her from, her constant wavering seemed ridiculous! But still, all-in-all, an enjoyable read! I just think she needs to take the plunge on over to strait-up suspense, as Tami Hoag did before her. (And Sandra Brown needs to do, also.) If we're not plunking our money down for romance we won't be disappointed!

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. After stumbling with The Teeth of the Tiger (2003), bestseller Clancy is back at the top of his game, aided by Blackwood (An Echo of War), with this update on the Jack Ryan story, both father and son. While the senior Ryan is sitting at home quietly penning his memoirs, the real action is taking place at "The Campus," the independent secret intelligence agency he set up when he was commander in chief. Jack Ryan Jr., who works for The Campus as a researcher, has, unbeknownst to his father, begun involving himself in field operations. Uppermost in the sights of The Campus is the deadly Emir (read Osama bin Laden), who has set in motion a new round of attacks. Jack Sr. is furious at current President Edward Kealty, whose liberal administration is stripping the CIA and other intelligence agencies of funding and manpower. In-depth research, continuous suspense, and scores of fascinating characters prove again why Clancy, the man who virtually invented this genre, reigns supreme in the crowded thriller field.

Review
“Heart-stopping action…entertaining and eminently topical.” —The Washington Post

“The best characters from all of Clancy’s previous novels are on the case.…For fans of the genre, Dead or Alive is likely to provide a long weekend’s pleasure.”—Los Angeles Times

“Clancy is back at the top of his game…In-depth research, continuous suspense, and scores of fascinating characters.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Nice to have Tom Clancy back
By Kevin Walmsley
The Amazon description has the book at 848 pages, but my copy, purchased at retail, is 950 pages. And--as with all the other Clancy books after Red October--I was the first one in line, and read it through on the first day. Harry Potter fans have their vices too, so I'm told.

"Dead or Alive" is in most respects exactly what you expect from Clancy--globe-trotting special agents whose names are now familiar. Exquisitely researched, down to almost mind-numbing detail on everything from internet protocols and encryption procedures, to the operation of weapons systems, and the layouts of neighborhoods half a world away.

It is a terrific book, and will be embraced by Clancy fans all over. It falls somewhat short of five stars for several reasons. Without giving away too much of the plot, I found the big targets in "Dead or Alive" to be implausible: why not go after Chicago or LA, given the ultimate objective to kill as many people as possible? Why target a huge South American oil refinery, when all of East Houston will do just as well? Just me, though.

But the second objection was what I consider a glaring, and most uncharacteristic mistake by Clancy. In providing background on Iranian army moves along the Iraqi border, he describes the Iraqi Shi'a population as a minority, and subject to persecution by the Sunni majority. In fact, it's the other way around. 80% of Iraq is Shiite, but Saddam Hussein was a Sunni, which is the primary reason the Sunni countries in the Middle East--which is all the others except for Iran--almost uniformly opposed his removal. It was unimportant to the plot, but I'm surprised that it survived what was probably double- and triple-checking by the editors, and no doubt by Clancy himself.

The Clancy books are superb, each for different reasons: "Red October" for naval and submarine operations; "Cardinal" for espionage tradecraft; "Clear and Present Danger" for small-unit combat operations; "Debt of Honor" for the workings of the financial markets, and so on. "Dead or Alive" doesn't have quite the intrigue those books do. And it is perhaps unfair to Clancy that he himself has set such a high bar with his previous work, that "Teeth" and "Dead or Alive" can't quite get to the same level that his previous works did. The technological detail is evident, as is the character development. But the sense of dread and foreboding and emotion that was conjured up before just isn't there. John Clark going after a drug ring that use prostitutes as drug mules (Without Remorse), or a psychotic setting off a nuke during the Super Bowl (Sum of All Fears), or another developing a strain of Ebola that is released in a dozen cities at a time (Executive Orders)--those books simply don't allow the reader to put them down. Also in those, he did a great job of developing the characters of the victims--the women used by the drug gangs, the traders and portfolio managers whose world was being turned upside down for reasons they didn't understand, the Secret Service agents who sacrifice their lives to protect a nursery full of toddlers, traveling salesmen whose insides were being ripped apart. They were deeply emotional, thrilling and exciting. "Dead or Alive" is very good, but not as good as those.

All that said, I'm already looking forward to his next one.

Ponderous, plodding, and predictable
By Brian Baker
I have a First Edition hardback copy of "Hunt for Red October", published by the Naval Institute Press, which was Clancy's first-ever book. I bought it new the day it hit the bookstore shelves in 1984. That's how long I've been a fan of Tom Clancy's.

Unfortunately, for a number of years now Clancy has chosen to go the James Patterson route of becoming a book mill using "co-authors", and the quality of his releases has suffered accordingly. I haven't even bothered reading his stuff for quite a while now.

So when I saw this book that promised to bring "Together for the first time, an all star cast of Clancy's characters..." (from the book jacket), I snapped it up with high expectations.

I wish I'd saved my money. What a bore!

First of all, the story line isn't anything new or inventive at all. Pretty standard fare about Islamic fanatics trying to blow things up. Been there, done that. Now, obviously that is a current and timely theme in this day and age, but there's nothing at all original about the execution in this book. Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp does it about a hundred times better.

Far too many characters with exotic Middle Eastern names for me to keep track of without a scorecard, and none of these jokers is at all unique or distinguishable. I'd think to myself, "Didn't this guy get killed off about 80 pages ago?", then I'd go back and find out that, no, it wasn't this guy, it was another guy with a weird and unmemorable name and no distinguishing characteristics. They were about as interchangeable as lug nuts.

The pacing is awful; there's never at all any buildup of tension or excitement. It's like watching paint dry. Clancy (and his minions) seems to have forgotten that "Red October" was only 387 pages long (my copy), but was a good enough book to propel him to the top of the bestseller charts. Yes, several of his later books were quite long, but they were also vastly better-plotted and -written than this monstrosity. Just adding filler does not a good book make, any more than doubling the amount of flour in a cake recipe makes for a better cake. All you end up with is a dry, tasteless, crumbly mess.

Even the characters who are part of the "all-star cast" have seen better days. Mr. Clark was a man of mystery in his early appearances, one of the more intriguing characters in Clancy's panoply. Now he's turned into a pretty mundane and boring guy about whom we know too much; and his sidekick "Ding" Chavez hasn't fared any better, having morphed into Ozzie Nelson with a gun. The other characters are all pretty two-dimensional - at best. Even Jack Ryan, the original "star" of the series, has lost his oomph and charisma, fretting about whether or not to run for President. This is the guy who took on the Soviet navy as a young CIA officer, and the IRA later on? You kidding me? What happened to him? He get his gonads shot off somewhere?

Save your money. This book's a waste of time.

Kill me
By G. Newman
I have always enjoyed Tom Clancy's books and remember looking forward to each book as it came out. This current book is absolute torture. While I would usually read one of his books in 1 to 3 sittings, I am about to scream trying to get through this boring, muddled mess of a book. I am on page 600, so it's really too late to abandon the book, but I can barely get through 25 pages at a time without my mind wandering. I don't know who edited this piece of garbage, but they should be shot and Clancy should simply leave the good storytelling to Vince Flynn and Lee Childs.
