Review
Novel by Paule Marshall, published in 1983. Recently widowed Avey (Avatara) Johnson, a wealthy, middle-aged African-American woman, undergoes a spiritual rebirth and finds a vital connection to her past while visiting an island in the Caribbean. Marshall portrays the special anguish of certain blacks who, in their drive to achieve material success, have lost touch with their heritage. Well-received by critics, the work was often compared to the novels of Toni Morrison. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Odd Style, but Deeper Meanings
By Jacob Baldassini
...The occasionally brilliant wording and the solid characterization make Avey Johnson an engaging protagonist. Her journey from a confused, troubled widow on an expensive cruise to a liberated woman with deeper understanding of her cultural and familial heritage make this book worth reading. This journey is interspersed with recollections of her relationship with her dead husband. This allows the reader to empathize deeply with her plight.
On a Caribbean cruise, Avey Johnson begins to have symptoms of both mental and physical illness. Driven by needs she doesn't understand, she leaves the cruise and finds herself adrift in a tide of Patois-speaking islanders, who are all intent on a cultural pilgrimage to a neighboring island. Her meeting with an island patriarch draws her into the pilgrimage as well. There, she learns that this is the culture she abandoned at the same time she abandoned her working-class roots.
The flashbacks to her life with her husband Jay not only chronicle her life preceding the cruise but also give a greater understanding of Avey as she throws herself headlong into a mysterious journey of self-discovery. The greater familiarity with the character is one of the book's strongest points.
The reason the book only rates four stars is that its symbolism makes it inaccessible when simply read for pleasure. This is not an offense worthy of a whole star, so my actual rating is four and a half stars, or 90%.
The symbolism sprinkled throughout the book does provide constant rewards, though- like Shakespeare, you can never finish gaining new insight through re-reading.
I feel confident in recommending this book to anyone who enjoys character-driven fiction. The symbolism was made apparent to me, as I read the book as part of a writing course. With that in mind, use only as directed.

I really enjoyed this book
By A Customer
This is a sensitive and introspective account of a woman coming to terms with her husband's death and her own independance. It's a shame that we don't hear Marshall's name as often as we do Walker's, Morrison's. We hear more about Terry McMillan's vapid and superficial writing than we do about a really talented writer like Marshall!

One woman's epiphany, courtesy of a Peach Parfait a la Versailles
By D. Cloyce Smith
A widow for four years, Avey Johnson has stanchly held herself up, living in the suburbs of New York City, lonely and adrift yet mostly conforming to the expectations of her friends, associates, and three daughters. While on a cruise in the Caribbean, however, she is troubled first by a dream and then by a comprehension of the vacuity of the experience (not to mention the insistent demands of her friends to have fun, damn it), including an epiphany of sort when confronted by a peach parfait in the artificial environs of the appropriately named Versailles Room. To the angry dismay of her farcically domineering friends, she leaves the ship for good at the port of the next island, fully expecting and intending to take the next plane back to New York. But her moment of resolution leads to an emotional collapse, and in Grenada her adventures (and misadventures) truly begin.

Marshall intersperses flashbacks from Avey's marriage and memories from her childhood with scenes from her impulsive flight to Grenada and her equally spontaneous escape with a group of complete strangers to the offshore island of Carriacou. What becomes apparent to the reader, as well as to Avey, is that she has lost touch with who she is and where she came from: not only with her South Carolina roots and her days as a young adult in Harlem and on Halsey Street in Brooklyn, but also with the African heritage that her aunt had often urged on her as a child. It is not simply that she has become "too white" but rather that the process of assimilation into an unquestioning and comfortable suburban life has made her not much of anything at all.

There is a certain pedantic quality to Marshall's prose, a sporadic appeal to heavy-handed symbolism that turns the book's themes into a capitalized Message: don't abandon your roots. But the intricate portrait of Avey Johnson largely dispels the thought that Marshall is simply preaching; this is indeed a praisesong for a widow rather than a sermon for readers. In fact, if I were to choose one word to summarize Marshall's prose here it would be "visceral." The language she uses to describe Avey Johnson's collapse and reawakening is both guttural and painstaking; the reader is not simply an observer of her trepidation, mortification, and confusion but also a participant in the blank nightmare her life has become. (I can't imagine the reader that won't be squeamishly horrified when Avey's emotional troubles turn physical.) While the final destination of Avey Johnson's late-life voyage is no surprise, the path she takes to get there is both excruciating and inspiring.

Trophy Hunt (A Joe Pickett Novel), by C. J. Box

Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett faces his most dangerous adversary yet in award-winning author C. J. Box's thrilling new novel.

It's an idyllic late summer day in Saddlestring, Wyoming, and game warden Joe Pickett is fly-fishing with his two daughters when he stumbles upon the mutilated body of a moose. Whatever-or whoever-attacked the animal was ruthless: Half the animal's face has been sliced away, the skin peeled back from the flesh. Shaken by the assault, Pickett begins to investigate what he hopes is an isolated incident.

Days later, after the discovery of a small herd of mutilated cattle, Pickett realizes this is something much bigger. Local authorities are quick to label the attacks the work of a grizzly bear, but Joe knows otherwise. The cuts on the moose and the cattle were too clean, too precise to have been made by jagged teeth. Are the animals only practice for a killer about to move on to a different, more challenging prey?

Joe's worst fears are realized when the bodies of two men are discovered within days of each other, their wounds eerily similar to those found on the moose and cattle. There's a vicious killer, a modern-day Jack the Ripper, on the loose in Saddle-string-and it appears his rampage is just beginning.

From Publishers Weekly
Box's riveting fourth Joe Pickett adventure (after 2003's Winterkill) opens on a disturbing note, with the Wyoming game warden's chance discovery of the oddly mutilated body of a moose near his favorite fishing hole. When several mangled cows and two grisly human corpses are added to the macabre menagerie, Joe reluctantly joins a task force to investigate. Bud Barnum, the corrupt sheriff of Twelve Sleep County, attributes the mutilations to birds or a notorious grizzly bear from Joe's jurisdiction, but Joe isn't convinced. Enter paranormal expert Cleve Garrett, who zealously follows mutilation and alien sightings in his recreational vehicle laboratory. Despite ridicule from the task force, Joe interviews Garrett, who supplies little fresh information but gives off creepy vibes. The clues that the quietly heroic Joe gathers from many disparate witnesses, including his own young daughters and a mentally incapacitated fisherman, may point to the otherworldly, but readers will be well satisfied with the all-too-earthly solution to the bizarre crimes. With its credible and sensitively drawn characters, loads of interesting tidbits about the natural world and timely plot, this skillfully crafted page-turner should have wide appeal.

From Booklist
Box, whose superb Joe Pickett series has nailed some great western issues (ecoterrorism, endangered species, survivalists), here draws a bead on one out in left field: cattle mutilations. When the Wyoming game warden finds a mysteriously mangled moose, he is unnerved. When cows and even humans turn up the same, he finds himself a reluctant member of a special task force. County residents think aliens are responsible and start wearing aluminum-foil hats and finding crop circles in their backyards; Pickett calls the theory "woo-woo crap." This has all the elements that made the first three Picketts so pleasurable: Pickett himself, a bad shot but a good man; a strong supporting cast, especially his family; an inventive plot; and Box's own well-reasoned grasp of the issues. If this one works a hair less well, it may be because of the woo-woo crap itself. Although there's a believable motive behind some of it, there's also a touch of the supernatural that doesn't quite fit. Still, there's nothing wrong with being merely excellent instead of state-of-the-art once in a while. Keir Graff

So much going on, it got confusing
By Rachel S. Jerdin
Our hero Joe finally seems to get recognition for what he does. The mutilations were gory and I still don't understand the weight of the air. I gather this sheriff will soon be out of the picture. Joe, his wife and daughters are a warm family struggling with little income. They are ones I want to be around.

A Suspenseful and Surprising Mystery
By Harold Backus
Trophy Hunt was an intriguing and surprising story of a mysterious phenomenon that created fear and frustration in the characters on different levels. Joe and his family were in the midst of a terrifying experience that kept you turning the pages. A great mystery and thriller. One of Box's best of the series.

Stone Cold (A Jesse Stone Novel), by Robert B. Parker

Paradise, Massachusetts, police chief Jesse Stone returns, tracking the path of a pair of thrill killers.

Investigating a serial killer in an affluent suburban town is difficult, and dangerous, and with the added pressures from the town selectmen and the media, the heat is turned up on Jesse. He's spending too much time with the bottle-and with his ex-wife-neither of which helps him, or the case. And the harder these outside forces push against him, the more Jesse retreats into himself, convinced-despite all the odds-that it's up to him alone to stop the killing.

As tough, clear-eyed, and sardonic as Jesse Stone himself, this is the Grand Master working at the peak of his powers.

From Publishers Weekly
It's taken four novels, but finally Parker's Jesse Stone series has produced a book as good as top-drawer Spenser. This outing finds the laconic, troubled cop tackling three problems: to capture the pair of serial killers who are murdering random victims in small-town Paradise, Mass., where Stone is chief of police; to bring to justice the three high-school students who gang-raped a younger schoolmate; and to come to terms with his love of both alcohol and his ex-wife, Jenn. The serial killers, revealed early to the reader and soon enough to Stone, are a married yuppie pair who taunt Stone, whom they take as a dumb hick cop, as he collects evidence to bring them down; his pursuit of them leads them to kill someone close to him, then to target Stone himself, and eventually to an emotionally cathartic climax in Toronto, where the killers have fled. That story line serves as a fine little police procedural, but Parker is at his max here when following the rape plot, especially in scenes in which Stone, in his cool, compassionate way, tries to help the besieged victim as best he can. Meanwhile, under intense media attention and pressure from town elders for the ongoing serial killings, Stone works his way toward an understanding of the roles that booze and Jenn play in his life. Told in third-person prose that's a model of economy, with sharp action sequences, deep yet unobtrusive character exploration and none of the cuteness that can mar the Spenser novels, this is prime Parker, testament to why he was named a Grand Master at the 2002 Edgar Awards.

From Booklist
Paradise, Massachusetts, police chief Jesse Stone is an addictive personality. Booze cost him his job as a homicide detective with the LAPD, and after that blew up, he traveled across the country to be near his ex-wife, television journalist Jenn. He refuses to believe it's over between them, and she doesn't help with her come-hither, leave-me-alone mood swings. But the qualities making his personal life hell also make him a good cop. You don't want Jesse to get you in his sights if you're a criminal. The baddies in this case are a couple who target their victims based on looks, stalk them, and kill them with two simultaneous shots from identical .22 caliber pistols. While hunting the psychos, Jesse is also after three middle-class juvenile predators who raped a classmate. Stone is much like Parker's Spenser, but with self-doubt overriding self-confidence. That formula worked fine in the first two Stone novels, but this one is less successful. Too much dime-store psychology between Stone and his Zen therapist; too much love-for-the-ages blather between Stone and his ex; and too much squad-room violence between Stone and his prisoners. Stone is a worthy character, but this is not the novel to make the case. But that doesn't mean Parker's fans won't want the chance to decide for themselves. Wes Lukowsky

Read about the highly appealing Jesse Stone
By J. Grattan
Jesse Stone is the beleaguered chief of police in tiny Paradise, Mass. He has ended up there after his job as a cop in Los Angeles, alcohol, and his ex-wife have forced him to redirect his life. Parker's Stone is an appealing character. He takes it one day at time, is a man of principle, and takes his new job seriously.

It is Stone's calmness and instincts as a cop that serve him well in investigating a series of seemingly linked killings in Paradise - something new in this small town. Though the strong, silent type, his sensitivity is evident in his handling of a sexual assault case in the local high school.

Stone has managed to get his alcohol abuse under control, but his ex-wife Jenn, a local TV personality, continues to bedevil him. He simply cannot move on without her, and this is despite his obvious appeal to other attractive and smart women.

The character of Jesse Stone is the reason to read this book, though it is mildly disappointing that the author really gives us little of his background. In addition the perpetrators of the murdering spree remain mostly a puzzle. How did they get to this point? Basically the book is a quick and enjoyable read.

Dark Justice, by Jack Higgins

From the master of suspense, a novel about a very different kind of war-with a very different set of rules.

Jack Higgins is "the dean of intrigue novelists," wrote the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about his last novel, Bad Company. "He has no equal." In the words of the Associated Press, "When it comes to thriller writers, one name stands well above the crowd-Jack Higgins."

It is night in Manhattan. The President of the United States is scheduled to have dinner with an old friend, but in the building across the street, a man has disabled the security and stands at a window, a rifle in his hand.

Fortunately, his attempt is not successful-but this is only the beginning. Someone is recruiting a shadowy network of agents with the intention of creating terror. Their range is broad, their identities masked, their methods subtle. White House operative Blake Johnson and his counterpart in British intelligence, Sean Dillon, set out to trace the source of the havoc, but behind the first man they find another, and behind the second another still. And that last man is not pleased by the interference. Soon he will target them all: Johnson, Dillon, Dillon's colleagues. And one of them will fall.

Filled with all the dark suspense and sudden action for which Higgins has become famous, and driven by characters of complexity and passion, Dark Justice shows the master at the peak of his powers.

From Publishers Weekly
Many of Higgins's thrillers have told one continuing saga, involving the efforts of Gen. Charles Ferguson (head of the British PM's "Private Army") and his staff to fend off various threats to queen and country. Here the timely challenge is Arab terrorism, but wobbly focus makes this a mediocre entry in a generally first-rate series. An attempt on the American president's life leads Ferguson—who alerted the Secret Service to the threat—and his main man, legendary hit man and former IRA enforcer Sean Dillon, to Josef Belov, an associate of Vladimir Putin (who appears in a cameo) and a Russian oil billionaire who's intent on world domination and who along the way is funneling would-be jihadists from Britain into terrorist training camps in the Middle East. Instead of concentrating on the promising terrorist angle, Higgins traces Dillon and Ferguson's pursuit of Belov and his goons, a race that leads to violent shootouts in Iraq and elsewhere. Ferguson takes a bullet, and Supt. Hannah Bernstein is seriously hurt. The story climaxes in a vengeful, bloody foray by Dillon and old sidekick Billy Salter into Belov's castle stronghold in Ireland. Higgins's action has always been clipped, but here some scenes are positively rushed, and there's much that's overly familiar. Still, the author's high-speed narration and the mesmerizing hard edges of heroes and villains alike should sustain fans' perhaps grudging interest.

From Booklist
Higgins has been a best-selling author for decades, but most of his books sound pretty much alike. This one, which brings back IRA enforcer turned British intelligence officer Sean Dillon, begins with a botched attempt to assassinate the U.S. president. Turns out the would-be assassin (who takes his own life rather than be apprehended) is part of a network of villains bent on causing as much terror and confusion as possible. Can Dillon and his American counterpart Blake Johnson bring the evildoers to justice? It's a standard Higgins plot, with standard Higgins characters, and fans of the novelist's previous thrillers will soon realize they are in familiar territory. The Higgins name will still attract an audience of devotees, but younger readers new to the genre are unlikely to see what all the fuss was about. Even veteran Higgins readers may find that too much of a once good thing has become tedious. David Pitt

I like how Higgins books end
By Amazon Customer
I read book 13 and a few others by this author before receiving my Kindle as a gift. Now I order the books in the series in order. I like how Higgins books end. They do not continue. He is very adapt in bringing the reader into knowing each characters' personalities without being boring. I love Sean Dillon, Ferguson and each protagonist he introduces. I will read every book!

Fire the Ghostwriter!
By Brad Embree
All of these customer reviews are right on point. Let me say that I'm a huge Higgins fan, especially "Solo" and of course the Ferguson/Dillon volumes. I have all of his books displayed on my bookshelf back home, and whenever I'm home for the holidays i always take out Thunder Point and reread the first act - it's brilliant.

Which is why I'm so disappointed with Dark Justice! I read it in two days and have spent just as long trying to decide if the book even had a plot. Without giving anything away to those unfortunate enough waste their money on this book, there's a teaser on the jacket cover that doesn't materialize - and with the "climax" being so short and underdeveloped i'm pretty sure i didn't miss anything. the only person who "fell" was Mr. Higgins off my pedestal.

Shame on the esteemed author. He has a devoted legion of fans, myself included, and he's now mailing it in something terrible. I've seen cheesecakes with recipes that were more interesting - the First Act Dillon barfight, the revenge-motivating Second Act injury to a key character, and the Third Act convincing of Harry Salter that Billy can go on one more mission with Dillon - one can only hope that Higgins will run out of cliched castles in which to stage his "climaxes," but i'm starting to get the sense that we've seen it all before.

Needless to say, i returned the book to Borders - it has no place on my bookshelf! wildebeist@aol.com

Mini-Review: "Dark Justice" by Jack Higgins
By Alan L. Chase
I continue to plow through Jack Higgins titles at a fairly brisk pace. His novels of intrigue and espionage are like an open bag of potato chips; you just can't eat one! With "Dark Justice," Higgins addresses the post-9/11 world of anti-terrorism - both in the U.S. and in the U.K. In each nation, the response to heightened threats of terrorism has been to create a shadow counter-terrorism team - one reporting soley to the U.S. President, the other reporting to the Prime Minister.

The plot ingredients for "Dark Justice" include a former IRA terrorist who now works for the Prime Minister in combatting terror, a Russian oil mogol who is a friend of Putin, a failed assassination attempt on the American President, and internal conflict within the Prime Minister's shadow team about the moral dilemma of operating "above the law" in order to have a fighting chance to thwart the terrorists.

As always, Higgins adds his own special blend of spices - well-drawn characters and unanticipated plot twists that makes this "bag of potato chips" delicious, crunchy and satisfying.

Thanks to Davidson's collaborative skills (previously with President Kennedy, Sid Caesar, etc.), the full flavor of Thomas's much-admired personality emerges in this autobigraphy. The son of poor Lebanese immigrants, the entertainer was born in 1914 on a horse farm in Michigan and grew up among Jewish, Irish, Italian and other new Americans, an ethnic mix that provides the material for the comic's storytelling routines. After breaking into radio in his youth, Thomas rose to fame in films and TV, remained married to his wife of 54 years, Rose Marie. He attributes his successful life to a kept promise to St. Jude to found and support a children's hospital in his name, an institution for which Thomas was awarded the Congressional Medal. The hospital, according to the star, is his greatest reward, outweighing his professional achievements, even his record-setting TV show, an 11-year prime-time favorite, Make Room for Daddy. Father to Tony, a noted TV producer, and actress-producer Marlo, Thomas also reports proudly on their careers. Among other attractions in the book are tender and funny tales of cherished friends Milton Berle, Lucille Ball, Sinatra, Sammy Davis and others. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
In the overpopulated field of star self-portraits, Thomas's stands out, if only because he has a kind word for virtually everyone and bears few grudges. (One exception: Walter Winchell.) Thomas's forte as an entertainer is his storytelling, which gets a full workout in these pages. Stories about his family of Lebanese immigrants. Stories about his early days in Chicago nightclubs. Stories about his smash TV series (the title was suggested by his wife). Stories about his show-box pals like Frank Sinatra and Milton Berle. And the stories that are part of his "act," many of them what he calls "treacle-cutters": sentimental tales with a sharp zinger at the end. Entertaining stuff that's an option for small and medium-sized collections.

Well Done Hollywood Memoir
By Mediaman
This is the fascinating story of Danny Thomas's life--it's filled with unusual stories and details, though it falls just short of being a home-run five-star book. It starts with a chapter that is kind of an overview of his life, then it goes chapter-by-chapter through the years of his upbringing and career.

Danny's childhood was almost hard to believe--he had gone under four different first names, was born to a woman who had married at 15 and had five kids by age 23, was allowed to live with an aunt who was his father's first love (living away from home from age 3 to 15!), dirt poor but Catholic educated he switched to public high school and then spent his days at the movie theatre instead of school (eventually dropping out and never finishing high school).

His professional life seems to be made more out of good timing than talent. He was a storyteller who didn't fit the traditional comedian model so no one knew what to do with him. He had some success in clubs but it was connections, not his talent, that gave him the TV job that made him a star.

The one failure of the book is that he spends too much time retelling stories from his nightclub act and too little details about his family. He has a short chapter on Marlo and it's evident that she rebelled against her mother's smothering, but it doesn't really explain Danny's impact on Marlo. He doesn't seem as emotionally excited about his daughters as he is with his now-famous producer son, yet even there we don't get a lot of detail. He also refuses to tell the date of his wedding, claiming his wife doesn't want people to know her age but leaving open the possibility that there may be another reason. He either doesn't have many family stories to tell or he is too private to share them.

He also could explain more about his production company, that made some of the greatest shows in TV history. There isn't a lot about that either--instead it's mostly the upbeat humor from his nightclub act and references to his childhood or ethnic relatives. It's all very entertaining for a fan of the star.

A delight!
By Marsha Miller
This book is a delight. The secret of Danny Thomas's long career comes through in this fascinating book. He clearly loved and took great pride in his wonderful family, thoroughly enjoyed his career, was grateful to all those who helped him on his way, gave back to the community -- and of course, he knew how to tell a great story! The details of his early show business career were particularly interesting as was the story about the founding of St. Jude's hospital. I don't usually read celebrity biographies but this is a good account of a life well spent and I'm glad I happened to read it.

St. Jude founder was a great entertainer and a great man!
By Gloria
See what a difference one man can make. This is not only a wonderfully entertaining story (biography), it recalls the golden age of TV and movies when talented writers were employed. It was when entertainers actually had talent, acting, singing, dancing, etc. There were comedians who didn't need to use vile language and gestures to get copious laughs and there were no unbearable "reality" shows. Those mentioned through out the book are a who's who of the greats. Danny Thomas is one of those all American success stories of rags to riches the honorable way. He founded St. Jude's Children's hospital in Memphis as an answer to his prayers to St. Jude, the apostle and patron of hopeless cases. St. Jude's is responsible for bringing the survival rates of some cancers from less than 5% to an astounding 90% all without charging poor people for their services!

The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan, by Michael Hastings

General Stanley McChrystal, the innovative, forward-thinking commanding general of international and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, was living large. He was better known to some as Big Stan, M4, Stan, and his loyal staff liked to call him a "rock star." During a spring 2010 trip across Europe to garner additional allied help for the war effort, McChrystal was accompanied by journalist Michael Hastings of Rolling Stone. For days, Hastings looked on as McChrystal and his staff let off steam, partying and openly bashing the Obama administration for what they saw as a lack of leadership. When Hastings's piece appeared a few months later, it set off a political firestorm: McChrystal was ordered to Washington, where he was fired unceremoniously.

In The Operators, Hastings picks up where his Rolling Stone coup ended. He gives us a shocking behind-the-scenes portrait of our military commanders, their high-stakes maneuvers and often bitter bureaucratic infighting. Hastings takes us on patrol missions in the Afghan hinterlands, to late-night bull sessions of senior military advisors, to hotel bars where spies and expensive hookers participate in nation-building gone awry. And as he weighs the merits and failings of old-school generals and the so-called COINdinistas-the counterintelligence experts-Hastings draws back the curtain on a hellish complexity and, he fears, an unwinnable war.

Review
Praise for THE OPERATORS by Michael Hastings:

"The life of a general is something to see, especially when it's Stanley McChrystal, America's four-star, rock star commander, at the height of his power and panache in Afghanistan. It's a hard story to get, and hard to tell it well, but in the hands of Michael Hastings, it's a world-class job of reporting and a joy to read."
—Richard Ben Cramer, author of What it Takes and DiMaggio

"The most impact-laden story of the year...written by a perfect specimen of the new breed of journalist-commentator."
—Barrett Brown, Vanity Fair

"An impressive feat of journalism by a Washington outsider who seemed to know more about what was going on in Washington than most insiders did."
—Frank Rich, New York Times

"The Operators is a troubling first-person narrative about a bizarre episode in U.S. military history, as well as a trenchant analysis of the disaster in Afghanistan. Hastings … brings a fresh eye and a brutally authentic voice to America's decade-old misadventure in Afghanistan.”
—Bob Drogin, Los Angeles Times

“The Operators seems destined to join the pantheon of the best of GWOT literature, not just for its rock-and-roll details, but for its piercing chronicles of a world gone mad.”
—Matt Gallagher, Newsweek/Daily Beast

“As the situation in Afghanistan grows increasingly muddy, [Hasting’s] disciplined adherence to solid journalistic practices and his acute eye for sharp scene setting makes much of the chaos comprehensible. Hastings has definitely taken up the traditional banner of the intrepid war correspondent, but he’s simultaneously shot it through with iconoclastic holes; the effect is illuminating on many levels.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“Hastings brilliantly intertwines narratives…. Hasting's first-class, engrossing reportage reveals unsettling yet human flaws behind one of recent history's most lionized military figures, and a war which purportedly began as a response to terrorism, but whose aims--in the author's estimation--remain ambiguous.”

—Publishers Weekly

"Superb... the book provides vital insights about the war not available anywhere else... One of the most eye-opening accounts provided yet...from one of the bravest and most intrepid journalists who has covered it.”

—Glenn Greenwald, Daily Beast

Bob Woodward, without worrying about protecting sources or access
By Nathan Webster
There are two distinct narratives to this mostly excellent book.

In one, Hastings recaps and expands on his embedded assignment alongside Gen. Stanley McChrystal's team as they traveled Europe and Afghanistan. A variety of inappropriate conversations later reported in Rolling Stone ended up leading to McC's dismissal as Afghanistan war commander. In the second, he presents an after-the-fact roundup of reporting on the Afghanistan situation, and other events in DC.

The book will be reviewed by any number of audiences with preconceived opinions.

There is a set of people who view what Hastings wrote as an attack on the military, which it isn't. Or, that he betrayed his source's confidence, which he didn't - they had to have known he was recording and writing notes. That's what a reporter does, after all, didn't they know it? Or they thought the same relationship that always works would work again - you hang out, you have some late night conversations, you trade stories and you bond...and when the writing's being done, then the reporter should know what to leave in, what to leave out. It always worked before, so why didn't it work now? I'm sure Duncan Boothby, McC's PAO, wondered that when he was resigning.

It didn't work, because Hastings is not Bob Woodward - he's not protecting access by protecting the bridge against enemies from either side. He burned the bridge with everyone, including him, on it. That's what the most honest reporter does - tells the story that he/she sees, and worries about the truth first and last...and relationships nowhere. The reportees aren't called friends, after all - they're called 'sources.'

Hastings shows this in a section where he presents a blistering critique of war reporters in general. He writes, quoting someone else, but it's really Hastings' point: "They...are invested in being war correspondents. They are invested in the myth of it. They wake up every day and they buff their armor. They make it nice and shiny."

I've actually been an embedded photojournalist several times in Iraq - so there's no way I read a passage like that and not take it personally. But that's fine; I get his point and I can take it. I do think his contempt would have been stronger if he had turned that criticism on himself a little more.

The part of the book that deals with the McChrystal embed is the best. He sticks to what's said and heard, and usually lets the words and observations stand on their own. He provides analysis and conclusions, but he sticks to the evidence at hand. He's documented it, whether written or recorded. Nobody disputed that what was said WAS said - people are simply upset that he actually reported the truthful, embarrassing words. McC's team clearly wanted to get a boost into pop culture by bringing a Rolling Stone reporter along - so they were trying to use Hastings as much/more than Hastings was using them. This is what an embed is like.

Sometimes I wonder, though, if the conversations he reports have enough meat on them to merit all this attention. Just because two people are talking in a room doesn't make it news, and McC's team reserved their derision for their superiors - never those below. Don't we all complain about our bosses? Does it really matter? I don't entirely have an answer.

The book also has after-the-fact reporting about the situation in Afghanistan. Because Hastings is not present for all of the events, it doesn't have the same urgency or passion. It's interesting, but nothing I hadn't read before. The part of the book most compelling and interesting is the embedded narrative where Hastings story IS the story.

There are a couple big missing parts. The first would-be publisher of this book dropped it - why? What happened? And, at what point did Hastings know he had a book deal? If he went in knowing that a high-paying book deal depended on getting some money quotes, that's relevant to the reader. He does not address any of that at all.

Hastings is absolutely right about the "media-military-industrial complex." While we have a "free" press, all that means is reporters are not censored by the government - they do it to themselves. Reporters protect sources, leave out embarrassing info, and work to guarantee a new story that will never quite make enough waves to get anyone in too much trouble. So Sarah Palin can be attacked all day long, but military leaders are above reproach? Absurd.

In the days ahead, there will be the usual harrumphing about how Hastings "blew his chance, and nobody will trust him, and sources will never talk to him now."

Spare me - they'll line up to talk to him, because the challenge works both ways. They think they'll be the one that Hastings makes the hero in his next book. The source wants to talk, they always want to talk.

Great book and powerful reporting about truths that people wanted hidden - while the after-the-fact reporting slows it down, his description of the embed itself is enlightening, controversial, impressive and honest. If a reporter doesn't report what they see and hear, then they didn't report anything at all - and Hastings did that in spades.

An excellent background to Michael Hastings assassination
By Marvin Sannes
An excellent background to Michael Hastings assassination. His new Mercedes - 3 explosion crash; they had to be sure it burned, running it into the homing device on that tree at 80 mph probably wouldn't kill him within all those airbags. In the book he talks about the most heat he got for the "Rolling Stones" story about Gen. McCrystal was from the press - Hastings violated the "con code" of the machine - "Media/military/industrial complex". I don't think McCrystal's people killed him, he was murdered as an example for those who step outside the "brotherhood", most probably the CIA/FBI and covered by the LAPD - part of the "brotherhood" of America's gangster police state. Killing Michael Hastings ended reporting on the Afghanistan War. I learned KAF is the busiest airport in the world - 5,000 flights a day and 200 shipping containers - what are they shipping? Opium? Hastings moral courage is extremely rare in America's press. This book is a classic.

If you'd like to maintain your belief in government competence, you probably shouldn't read this book
By Jeff the Zombie
You may remember how back in 2010 an article in Rolling Stone got General Stanley McChrystal fired from his job running the war in Afghanistan. McChrystal and his team were presented as arrogant, free-wheeling and insubordinate, bashing the President, as well as the civilian leadership. I remember finding very little surprising about how McChrystal was portrayed in the article -- but I'm a cynic, it's my belief that most people who hold powerful positions tend to be burdened with hubris and incompetence. The fact that this is true, but is rarely reported in the media due to the cozy relationship between the power brokers and the court stenographers, is what really caused the firestorm. It wasn't so much that Hastings' story was true that upset so many in Washington, it was that he had the temerity to put the truth in print.

The Operators is a book-length version of the Rolling Stone article, covering the first few years of the Obama administration's efforts in Afghanistan. And those looking for a hero in the story are going to have a hard time finding one. Even Hastings, the narrator and ostensible protagonist, isn't particularly likable.

The war Hastings describes is one dominated by political infighting, with various factions hidden away inside their own insulated bubbles, incapable of recognizing the truth, or refusing to admit the truth when it conflicts with ideology. The Obama administration comes off as weak and ineffective, the Afghan government as corrupt and impossibly incompetent, and the American military as an isolated culture more concerned by its own inner workings and politics than whether or not it can achieve actual "success" in a country as thoroughly broken as Afghanistan (or even what "success" might mean). The media gets the worst of the criticism though, compromising its professional integrity in exchange for access to the people in power. The only people presented at all sympathetically are the individual American soldiers and infantry units who face the true reality on the ground every day.

It's hard to come away from The Operators feeling like there's any hope -- not just for America in Afghanistan, but for our ability to accomplish anything substantial on a large scale. The dysfunction in America seems baked into our DNA, with political polarization and personal ambition overriding any sense of the greater good. Granted, this is just one person's view of the situation in Afghanistan, but given that no one is treated terribly well, it's hard not to believe that The Operators may be close to the truth.

The Personality Code, by Travis Bradberry

A revolutionary approach to success and fulfillment-already being used by hundreds of thousands of individuals and organizations-now available for the first time in an accessible, practical book.

The Personality Code clearly and persuasively demonstrates how personality determines why we do what we do and how we can maximize our strengths, work smarter with others, and profit from better relationships in our careers.

Based on the IDISC(tm) Personality Profile-an updated and rigorously validated proprietary version of DISC, the world's most popular form of personality testing-the book provides insights and strategies for individuals and organizations that promote self-awareness and foster excellence.

Readers will have free access to the online IDISC(tm) Personality Profile (each book will include a unique code number), which will reveal their own profiles from among the fourteen personality types that have been refined and defined through the author's decade-long international study involving more than five hundred thousand participants.

Travis Bradberry shows readers how to discern the fixed characteristics that explain three-quarters of human behavior. Most important, they will learn how to leverage these traits in order to capitalize on their strengths and sidestep weaknesses in themselves as well as in other people.

From the Inside Flap
Character Is Destiny

Conventional wisdom says that success is a simple matter of "being who you want to be." This well-intended advice couldn't be further from the truth. By the time we reach adulthood, who we are is already determined by fixed traits that change less than 1% in a lifetime.

Self-Awareness Breeds Success

With the vast majority of what we do and say controlled by personality, self-awareness stands alone as the ubiquitous indicator of success. The secret to building self-awareness lies in deciphering your personality code--the fixed set of traits that explain your choices and behavior.

For the first time, The Personality Code explores and explains the results of a decade-long global study involving more than 500,000 participants that determined fourteen types of people based upon their personality profiles. The study led to the groundbreaking refinement of DISC--the world's most popular personality profiling method--and clearly delineates the talents, strengths and blind spots inherent in each personality type.

Now, using your unique access number provided with this book, you can take the proprietary version of the DISC personality profiler, known as the IDISC to discover your type and boost your self-awareness.

The Personality Code is an insightful and practical guide to help you fully engage your innate talents, maximize your strengths, avoid the pitfalls of your distinctive type, work smarter with others, and profit from better relationships in every aspect of your life and career.

Not All That Insightful
By Wallace Yang
After having read this book and taken the test I felt that it was a very underwhelming experience. The test was short and after getting the results I was questioning the accuracy and effectiveness of the test. After receiving the results the descriptions of each personality type is a bit vauge and uninsightful. The Myers-Briggs psychology test, which you can take for free online, is much more insightful and useful. Don't waste your money on this book.

A twist on MBTI
By CMD925
In short, I liked the book. I took the test, found out I was an Innovator and found out who my antithesis is. All that being said, the iDISC is explained in laymen terms and makes a lot of sense. For those of us who are familiar and have used MBTI, this is along those lines and makes perfect sense.

God's Leading Lady, by T. D. Jakes

T. D. Jakes knows that society demands a great deal from women. They are told that they must do it all, give their all. But the truth is, many women feel that their souls are parched and they have nothing left to give. Many have been abused verbally, physically, and emotionally, leaving them scarred and lacking in self-worth. They are tired, uninspired, and spiritually impoverished, unsure of what they can offer and uncertain if they could ever do enough.

But now Bishop Jakes offers the balm to soothe their spirits and restore their souls. Drawing on the stories of the women of the Bible, Bishop Jakes shows all women how they can move beyond their imperfections and lack of self-esteem, and step up to claim the success the Lord has promised them. Bishop Jakes gives contemporary relevance to the ageless truths and principles found in the Scriptures, and empowers every woman to break the bonds of her worldly limitations and stand strong in the light of who she is in God. He teaches that whether a woman is leading a family or a corporation, she has within her the ability to impact the world. By guiding them to look inside themselves and toward the Lord, Bishop Jakes helps women find the power they need to unlock their destiny and excel.

From Publishers Weekly
In the tradition of Woman, Thou Art Loosed! and The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord, Bishop Jakes continues to uplift Christian women with this charge for them to step out of the shadows and take their positions onstage as God's leading ladies. The stage metaphor is carried throughout; Jakes encourages women to master the art of improvisation (to put aside pre-arranged scripts... and go with what works in the moment) and to transcend life's outtakes (embarrassing failures). The writing style is vintage Jakes: he poses rhetorical but energetic questions to the reader, shares personal examples from his own life and draws upon the models other women have provided for success. He profiles several biblical women who knew how to step into the limelight: Deborah, Jael, Mary the mother of Jesus, Ruth, Sarah, Tamar and Eve all get juicy roles in Jakes's production. He deals with some sticky biblical passages, arguing, for example, that the let-wives-be-subject-to-their-husbands verse in Ephesians has too often been taken out of context and used to suppress women and rob them of their voices. Jakes also points to modern-day leading ladies, such as radio magnate Cathy Hughes, television icon Oprah Winfrey and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt as role models. Some of his self-help advice is clichEd; readers are asked to decide, for example, whether their trials will make them bitter or better. Overall, however, Jakes offers a fresh and compassionate summons for women to recognize their divine worth.

From Library Journal
Like Bishop Vashti M. McKenzie in Journey to the Well (see Prepub Alert, LJ 2/15/02), Jakes tells women how they can restore their lives through belief.

From Booklist
Evangelist Jakes offers abundant encouragement to women trying to fulfill the demands of family, friends, home, job, church, and community. Using stage metaphors throughout, Jakes looks beyond the pretense of life for many women who dress to fit certain roles, act out certain scripts, and fail to realize their true roles in life. He confronts issues of low self-esteem, spiritual emptiness, self-doubt, and other limitations imposed by society or by the women themselves that prevent them from fulfilling their individual promise and potential. Jakes encourages women to live real, authentic, and fulfilling lives in harmony with God's purpose for them. He fortifies women against the myth that a person can have it all and advises achieving a balance that keeps in mind the need to nurture the spirit. Jakes cites living and biblical women--Ruth, Naomi, Mary Magdalene--as examples of those who overcome adversity, cope with sudden life changes thrust upon them by God, rise to challenges, and exhibit perseverance, trust, and faith. This is a book for women of all ages and of all economic and social statuses, and it speaks to a range of issues from single motherhood to ill health to financial crises to troubled marriages. Jakes' fans will love this latest message of encouragement and spiritual empowerment. Vanessa Bush

Hard to get into the act!
By K. Fowler
This is one of my favorite authors. However, I must say that this book was very difficult to get into. The message was focused around women taking their roles in God's theater. I do not feel that this was one of the best organized books. I consider myself an avid reader and this book was just very difficult to get through. I found myself several times having to put it down becuase my mind would drift. I was dissapointed in this book. I kind of got a sense that maybe Serita wrote most of it. Her Princess Within has the same affect on me.

A Platitude on Every Page
By Teresa Slack
I have loved listening to Bishop Jakes preach since he was still in his little church in West Virginia. I've watched his programs and listened to his tapes. I bought this book on his name alone. What a disappointment. God's Leading Lady is like one continuous pep rally. Rah! Rah! Rah! Sister, you can do it. Go! Go! Go! "Step out of the shadows and into the light". "Don't believe that you are alone no matter how desolate and bare your life's theater feels". "You must move beyond the Potter's shelf into the fire of greatness". "It is time you soar". "All the world is your stage--step up and allow yourself to shine".

I agree wholeheartedly with the message of this book. As women, we do put shackles on ourselves or allow others to do so. I don't think the author did enough to explain how to soar, just to have faith and do it. I couldn't get into the message or the point of the book because I was exhausted from wading through paragraph after paragraph of rhetoric and tedium. The book did get better as it went along, but not enough to warrant the money spent.
