Review
The most ambitious of Dean Koontz's books. ("Columbus Dispatch")

About the Author
Dean Koontz was born in Everett, Pennsylvania, and grew up in nearby Bedford. He won an Atlantic Monthly fiction competition when he was twenty and has been writing ever since. Mr. Koontz's books are published in 38 languages. Worldwide sales total more than 175 million copies, a figure that currently increases at a rate of more than 350 million copies a year. Dean and his wife, Gerda, live in southern California.

From the Paperback edition.

From AudioFile
Koontz's current best-seller relates the story of two Southern California police detectives who track down a demonic serial killer with paranormal abilities. The work is well-suited to audio, and fans of Koontz should enjoy this exceptional production. Jay O. Sanders is simply superb. All characters (even Woofer, a dog who plays an important role) are fully voiced. One of the characterizations--the golem--is so strikingly different from Sanders's "normal" voice that it's difficult at first to recognize that it's still Sanders speaking. This is a long production, but the pace never flags, and Sanders is consistently excellent. M.A.M. An AUDIOFILE Earphones Award winner (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Very Good Book With Lots Of Action
By Jewel
This is the second time I have read this book & it is a good one. Quite a bit of repetition & long descriptions but you can speed read those & keep up with the story very well. The character development is very good. You know the people (& especially the dog!) & really care what happens to them. The antagonist is very creepy & the protagonists are very likable. The dog is wonderful & the last two pages are very sweet. I was most happy for Woofer.

A must read! Don't bother with the negative reviews!
By J. Williams
I don't know why the negative reviews knocked Dean Koontz's "usual formula". I have a suggestion...if you don't like it find another author! This one was full of surprises and plot turns that I did not see coming at all. Fast paced, great character development, and a great plot. His characters grow on you!

She's more worried about what's going on in her own house in Whispering Springs, Arizona, where she lives with her new husband, private investigator Ethan Truax. After a whirlwind courtship, and a dangerous adventure, they've gambled on commitment, hoping that their powerful attraction can help them learn to live together despite their utterly opposite personalities.

But newlywed life is suddenly interrupted when a shadowy figure from Zoe's past shows up in Whispering Springs, and her closest friend is put at terrible risk. For Zoe and Arcadia Ames share a shocking secret. And as they seek to protect the truth, they must join together, and with Ethan's help, accept a very dan-gerous dare.

not enough romance, mystery or plot
By Deborah MacGillivray
I adored JAK's Light in Shadow - the first in the Whispering Springs Novels. The characters were crisp, witty and it was JAK at her best.

This does measure up to that book. Not that it is bad. It's just this is in the pattern of her recent trilogies of books. One really good and then two weaker continuation of the same story. I really hoped since Light and Shadow was so strong that she would break that curse. I love JAK - she is one of my favourite writers, but I do feel a wee bit let down by these weaker part 2 and 3 books. Only the Eclipse Bay books were as good all the way through, in fact got stronger as they went. In paperback, maybe you would grump less, but at hardback prices her fans might feel they deserve a little bit more.

When we last saw the Whispering Hills gang, it was just a month early. Ethan Truax, PI, had married Zoe Luce to stop Zoe's brother-in-law from trying to pop her back in to the high-priced Candle Lake Manor Psychiatric Hospital. The bluff had worked and the mystery - who killed Zoe's husband - was solved. Zoe's fellow escapee from Crystal Lake - Arcadia was now living with Harry, Ethan's PI friend. Neither Zoe or Arcadia had mental problems, but Crystal Lake specialised in hiding rich people's "embarrassments" - for enough money they quietly keep the problemsome relative away from prying eyes. However, in Arcadia's case, she was actually hiding from a husband, and deliberately checked herself into Crystal Lake. Grant Loring tried to kill her. She figured her husband would never look for her at an institute for the mentally ill.

Arcadia suddenly fears, Grant's still alive - not dead from a skiing accident as reported - and that he has now decided to come after his wife who has too much information on him. She fears her "new" identity has been compromised.

The whole gang, for one reason or another is uneasy. It's November, the month Ethan's brother was murdered, leaving Ethan, Bonnie, his sister-in-law, and his two nephews dealing with the grief. Ethan also is concerned about his marriage. He jumped at the chance to use the excuse of protecting Zoe, when he really wanted to marry her. Now, he fears she may be having second thoughts. Zoe is having seconds thoughts, but not because of love. She loves Ethan, but he refuses to believe Zoe is psychic, just chalks up her "gift" to good intuition. She feels if he cannot accept WHAT she is how can he love her? This is a sticking point, especially when she starts running into "spider webs" of dark emotions somehow connected to Crystal Lake. But those worries, take a back seat when someone tries to kill Ethan. Is it connected to his brother's death? Connected to Zoe's stay at Crystal Lake? Or the con man that Ethan exposed?

Frankly, this books is a enjoyable read, with some really fine JAK's humour. On the whole, she once again has too many story lines going all at once - to hide there is not much of a mystery (Smoke and Mirrors problem). The romance between Zoe and Ethan is pushed aside as it become the "Gang's" Story. Maybe it's a transitional period for JAK. That passion for writing romance seem to have lost that brilliant spark. She covers with extra story threads, lots of chatter about food (yes, we know JAK doesn't like meat!!) food, food and more food (Quick's Don't Look Back's Problem).

This is enjoyable, diverting, and will please fans, but they would do well to wait for paperback.

The same complaints I see from other readers concerning her last half dozen books - thin mysteries, too many story threads shifting the focus from the leads - and the biggest zinger - not enough romance. This book just seems to anti-climatic after the first brilliant Whispering Springs tale which I adored.

Here is the seminal biography of the magician's magician, Howard Thurston, a man who surpassed Houdini in the eyes of showmen and fans and set the standard fro how stage magic is performed today.

Everyone knows Houdini-but who was Thurston? In this rich, vivid biography of the "greatest magician in the world," celebrated historian of stage magic Jim Steinmeyer captures the career and controversies of the wonder-worker extraordinaire, Howard Thurston.

The public's fickleness over magicians has left Thurston all but forgotten today. Yet Steinmeyer shows how his story is one of the most remarkable in show business. During his life, from 1869 to 1936, Thurston successfully navigated the most dramatic changes in entertainment-from street performances to sideshows to wagon tours through America's still-Wild West to stage magic amid the glitter of grand theaters. Thurston became one of America's most renowned vaudeville stars, boldly performing an act with just a handful of playing cards, and then had the foresight to leave vaudeville, expanding his show into an extravaganza with more than forty tons of apparatus and costumes. His touring production was an American institution for nearly thirty years, and Thurston earned a brand name equal to Ziegfeld or Ringling Brothers.

Steinmeyer explores the stage and psychological rivalry between Thurston and Houdini during the first decades of the twentieth century-a contest that Thurston won. He won with a bigger show, a more successful reputation, and the title of America's greatest magician. In The Last Greatest Magician in the World, Thurston's magic show is revealed as the one that animates our collective memories.

From Publishers Weekly
Expanding on his chapters on Howard Thurston in his history of magic, Hiding the Elephant, Steinmeyer produces an engaging full-length biography of the man Orson Welles called œthe master. While Houdini™s daring stunts were legendary, Steinmeyer says Thurston was the public™s favorite, captivating audiences with his œself-assured grandeur. Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Thurston gained fame in the early part of the 20th century with his œRising Card Trick, in which he levitated cards named by audience members. He successfully changed with the times, going from street performances to wagon tours through the West. He then became a top vaudeville star, but wisely left the vaudeville circuit to produce more ambitious spectacles involving 40 tons of magic apparatus and colorful costumes, a variety of animals, and more than two dozen assistants. Tracing the magician™s rise to fame, this volume neatly juggles his marriages and his magic with his triumphs, travails, showmanship, and marketing ballyhoo (œThe Wonder Show of the Universe). Steinmeyer recovers, from the shadows of his greatest rival, a figure whose grandiose productions were an American institution for almost 30 years. (Feb. 3)

HOWARD THURSTON LIVES AGAIN!
By B. Robinson
Jim Steinmeyer's excellent new biography of Howard Thurston (1869-1936) is a welcome addition to the literature of the theatre and that of the history of magic. The dogged research by the author is noticeable on every page as we find our subject first on the outskirts of society as a petty thief and then rising to the heights of being an American institution -- parading the largest touring magic show ever. Thurston made his success in Europe at the turn of the century at the same time another young Hungarian emigre named Erich Weiss also left for England to seek his fortune. Of course, Erich had changed his name to an appropriation of France's greatest magician: Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, and began calling himself brazenly HOUDINI. That HOUDINI has become a legend is undeniable, and this book seeks to settle a score, if only for historical accuracy, that, in their day, the early 1900's Thurston was the King of Magic. Thurston was never eclipsed by the syllable accenting American Houdini. In fact, it is clearly shown by this expertly written tome that Houdini was a top of the bill vaudeville star with his name spelled in letters twice the size of any other act, while Thurston appeared in legitimate theatre and at the White House several times. Thurston made woman float in the air, and sawed women in halves, and gave a three-hour extravaganza that took several train cars to carry, even providing a full orchestra as well. The problem that brought his downfall was the Great Depression and the rise of the "flickers" which we all know today as the movies. Thurston was as much a part of the Roaring Twenties as Al Capone or Babe Ruth and that his star has faded is a shame. Yet, like the great phoenix he was, this book, brilliantly written and researched and engendering the same kind of thrilling enthusiasm Thurston brought in his audiences, brings back the master magician in all his glory, if only in a slightly bittersweet way. Bravo to Jim Steinmeyer for a wonderful read. I unreservedly advise all who love a good tale, love magic history, and love the truth of the early 20th century theatre to run out and buy this book. You will not regret it. 5 stars!

Very Interesting Book
By Gary Hartner
Very interesting, easy to read and informative book. A glimpse into the turn of the twentieth century. My only negative is that the book only explains a few of the illusions.

Vivid, exciting magician's bio--would make a great movie!
By Pageturner in NYC
Steinmeyer's THE LAST GREATEST MAGICIAN IN THE WORLD is a supremely entertaining historical biography that rescues Howard Thurston, a show-business legend who has been overshadowed over the years by the legend of Harry Houdini. History may be myopic in its appreciation of this master magician, but in his day, he was more popular than Houdini. Steinmeyer, who is not only an acclaimed author (HIDING THE ELEPHANT) but also a historian and designer of magic illusions, has an infectious enthusiasm for his subject matter. He's particularly adept at recreating Howard Thurston's exciting early years when he spent parts of his youth traveling through America--riding the rails, hobo style. Steinmeyer writes: "Today the public has forgotten the name Thurston....when most people imagine a great magician of the 1920s, they summon the name Houdini. But few understood what Houdini's show really looked like--gazing at a curtained cabinet and waiting for him to escape... It was Thurston who presented the magic show of our collected memories, the bright, fast miracles that complimented the 1920s--the floating princess, the painted boxes suspended over the heads of the audience, and the gunshots that caused handfuls of fluttering showgirls to disappear." This is a smashing page-turner--colorful, exciting, and full of historical facts. This is not a dry biography--it reads like great fiction and would amke a tremendous movie! If you're a fan of magic, vaudeville or historical biographies...pick up this great book!

From Publishers Weekly
In his first novel, Shatner delivers a hard-boiled private eye story set against a science-fiction background. The erstwhile "Captain Kirk" of Star Trek fame takes us to the 22nd century where many of the technical trappings of society have changed drastically, but politics and attitudes remain the same. Some of Shatner's projections are likely (newspapers and magazines published by fax), some are improbable (androids so human-like that most people can't tell the difference) and some are the same old thing (a missing scientist with the standard-issue beautiful daughter). Ex-cop Jake Cardigan has been sentenced to 15 years in a controlled coma on an orbiting penal colony after being framed for dealing "Tek," an addictive, computerized mind-altering drug. Mysteriously released after only four years, he is hired by a detective agency to find the missing scientist, a task involving a trip to a Mexico torn by civil war to question his former lover, the beautiful rebel leader known as "Warbride." Accompanied by an android of the scientist's missing daughter and torn by the growing evidence that his ex-wife is involved not only in the present case but also his framing, Cardigan fends off attacks by maniacal cyborgs and other futuristic menances. While the writing is awkward in spots, the pace is unrelenting.

Backdated future detective noire
By PPK
The title of the review pretty much sums up the feel of the book. It has a very dated feel with everything being "plas-something" and flying cars. It's easy to guess when the book was written, just by some of the words and phrases used, so if you don't like that old-school sci-fi feel, I wouldn't bother picking up this book. Personally, it made me laugh a little and reminded me of when I first got into sci-fi, although at times it felt a little tedious. The other main feeling of the book is old-school detective noire. Hard bitten street-smart detective falls for the damsel in distress. There's some action, but a lot of exposition. Generally speaking, the book is pretty decent, and if you're looking for something to read here and there at lunch breaks or in the airport, it's perfect. You'll have no problem putting it down, but it's got enough interest to get you to pick it up again. For those of you who are interested, there was a brief (very brief, as I recall) television series based off these books, and I didn't think they were too shabby. You might want to check them out if you find the older style of this book too much to handle.

More detective story than sci fi
By Ragnar65
In Tek War, Jake Cardigan is an ex-cop who has spent four years in jail for crimes he says he didn't commit. He gets out early after serving only part of his sentence. When he gets home he learns that his wife has divorced him, taken their son and moved to Mexico. He then finds out the person who got him out early was a man who owns a detective agency that Cardigan's old partner works for. So they partner up again to find a missing professor and his daughter whose aircraft crashed in the jungles of Mexico. The professor has invented a device that will destroy all of the Tek chips in the world. The eponymous Tek are microchips that you use with a device that implants in your brain that allows you to create any fantasy you want and have it seem like it really happens. Cardigan was a user but was also trying to bring down the cartels who sold it. Cardigan's partner gets hurt early on and it's up to him to complete the investigation.

Tek War is more of a detective story than science fiction. Yes, it's set in the future and there are sci fi buzz words like droids and laser rifles, but at its heart it's a detective story. The overall plot is interesting but not spectacular. Shatner's writing is passable. It gets you from point A to point B and moves the story along but there isn't a lot of individual style. He uses vernacular at times that doesn't fit the situation, especially in dialog. The things that seemed off could have been fixed by a good editor. Tek War was an ok book. It's a quick read. If you're looking for a real sci fi book this isn't it, despite the author's pedigree.

Inspector Kari Vaara returns, more haunted than ever, in the follow- up to Snow Angels, "a must for fans of the international crime novel." (Booklist)

The Sufia Elmi case left Kari Vaara with a scarred face, chronic insomnia, a constant migraine, and a full body count's worth of ghosts. Now it's a year later, in Helsinki, and Kari is working the graveyard shift in the homicide unit, terrified that his heavily pregnant wife will miscarry again after she lost the twins just after Christmas.

Kari is pushed into investigating a ninety-year-old national hero for war crimes committed during World War II. The Interior Minister demands a conclusion of innocence, preserving Finland's heroic perception about itself and its role in the war, but Germany wants extradition.

In a seeming coincidence, Kari is drawn into the murder-by-torture case of Iisa Filippov, the philandering wife of a Russian businessman. Her lover is clearly being framed for the crime-and Ivan Filippov's arrogance and nonchalance point the finger at him. But he's being protected from above, leading Kari to the corrupt corridors of power. Soon the past and present collide in ways no one could have anticipated.

Starred Review. Thompson's stellar second thriller featuring Insp. Kari Vaara (after Snow Angels) finds Vaara working as a homicide detective in Helsinki, where he investigates the torture murder of Iisa Filippov. While Vaara suspects the victim's Russian husband, Ivan, he can't touch Ivan because the Russian is well connected within the police department. Vaara also looks into international accusations of war crimes against a Finnish national hero, 90-year-old Arvid Lahtinen, who allegedly executed Jews and other POWs at a secret Finnish stalag during WWII. But he soon learns that not only did his own grandfather serve in the same unit but the stalag is just one of the wartime secrets Lahtinen is hiding that are potentially embarrassing to the Finnish government. The arrival of Vaara's pregnant wife's brother and sister from the States doesn't make his home life easy. Thompson elegantly threads Finland's compelling national history with Vaara's own demons in this taut, emotionally wrought novel. (Mar.)

*Starred Review* One year after the traumatic events of Snow Angels (2010), Inspector Kari Vaara is now living in Helsinki with his heavily pregnant American wife. While Kate has adjusted well to their new life, Vaara still struggles; returning to Helsinki is not easy for him, and now Kates pregnancy is causing him such extreme stress that he has barely slept for months and has headaches that last for weeks. Disliked by the rest of the homicide department, Vaara is partnered with Milo, the other department pariah, an enthusiastic, lonely, and eccentric detective with unusual hobbies. When they are assigned to investigate the death of a wealthy married woman, found in another mans bed, the seemingly cut-and-dried case soon becomes a tangled web that Vaara is determined to unweave, no matter the preferences of his superiors. Meanwhile, he is also given an off-the-record job of investigating a national hero who is currently wanted for war crimes from WWII and who may very well have known Vaaras beloved grandfather. Together these plots form an impossible-to-put-down read. Thompsons second book, even better than the first, will surely be one of the best Nordic mysteries published in 2011. Essential reading for all fans of Arnaldur Indridason, Stieg Larsson, Henning Mankell, and Jo Nesb. --Jessica Moyer

Damn goood read: a Grimdark Finnish police novel
By Kindle Customer
Grimdark Finnish police procedural, this was my first Inspector Kari Vaara mystery, and I've ordered three more (including the first one). There's plenty of off-screen sex, which, in a first person narrative, isn't very graphic. The violence is fairly visceral, without much description, so it's mostly in the mind of the reader (in a first person narrative, it's at one remove, and without more than minimal detail, it's at two removes. Renowned police detective Vaara has a politically sensitive murder to solve, and a suspect captured and ready to be convicted of it- if the husband of the victim has his way about it, and the political "fix" is in. But the detective, ever ready to protect the innocent, thinks the evidence doesn't add up to the jailed man turturing and killing his girlfriend. And why do the powers that be want a quick investigation and conviction? Additional woes add to the Detective's interesting life- his wife is pregnant with what will be his first child, if all goes well, and his wife's American brother and sister arrive to visit their sister, and create as much chaos as only family can do!

The story seems to lack any kind of moral center: If I were to judge Finland on what I read in its pages, I would believe the Finnish people are corrupt and cynical.

From Library Journal
Former Secretary of State Baker's memoirs offer an engaging and candid behind-the-scenes look at the conduct of U.S. foreign policy during one of the most tumultuous periods in recent history. The dramatic political convulsions of his tenure?the Tiananmen Square massacre, breakup of the Soviet Union, collapse of the Berlin wall, German reunification, and Iraqi invasion of Kuwait?form the backdrop for Baker's intriguing account of his forays into the vicissitudes of international diplomacy, a tale laced with personal anecdotes and intimate portraits of major world figures. Confusing chronological arrangement and sometimes tedious details may put off some readers, but those who persevere will be well rewarded. Comparable to his predecessor George P. Schultz's Turmoil and Triumph (Scribner's, 1993), Baker's book is a valuable contribution to the literature on contemporary U.S. foreign relations. A welcome addition to both popular and academic collections.

awesome
By MGN
An incredible read! James Baker's diplomatic memoirs cover his time as Secretary of State from 1989 to 1992. This book provides a unique insight into the world as it was being fundamentally transformed. Baker details the decisions, negotiations and processes which drove the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, the reunification of Germany, the liberation of Eastern Europe from Soviet domination and communism. There is also a detailed review of the first Gulf war and the following Mid East Peace process efforts. Baker sets up a structure to his diplomacy based on the need to gain domestic consensus for international action. This is a skill he is excellent at as he describes his patient negotiations with a Democrat controlled Congress prior to deciding and acting on behalf of the USA. Baker describes the process of the Soviet collapse and subsequent liberation of Eastern Europe in extensive details. There are details about discussions with Gorbachev and his Foreign Minister, Eduard Shevardnadze. Baker describes how he developed a genuine, deep friendship with his Soviet counterpart as they tackled the difficult issues surrounding the transformation of Europe. One of the few light hearted moments in an otherwise very serious book is Baker's description of him and Shevardnadze downing half gallon of Georgian vodka with tarkhun at the apartment of Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli (along with Evgenii Primakov)....The boom details the reluctance of Britain and especially France to allow German reunification and the careful diplomacy which allowed it to happen. Baker seems to repeat the challenge which France posed for American diplomacy even as an ally. The details of the liberation of Eastern Europe add a source of emotional joy to this book as Baker describes in detail not only the diplomatic but the human responses he sees. His interpreter breaks down in tears as Baker meets with Vaclav Havel in Czechoslovakia. The interpreter was a Czech whose family was exiled by the communists and now he was back to a free country for the first time. Seems the impact was just too much. Another incredible description was Baker's visit to Albania. Hundreds of thousands of Albanians lined his motorcade from the airport to Tirana to cheer him on as the nation was liberated by the most repressive dictatorship in the communist bloc. Several Albanians actually lifted his limousine off the ground to carry it into the main square of the city. WOW! The chapters about the first Iraq war are fascinating. The description of Baker's methodical diplomacy in putting together a truly global coalition, including the recalcitrant Arab states, is like reading a master class on diplomacy. The competence and skill is truly breathtaking. The efforts of reconciling multitudes of countries' various concerns is at once difficult to read and enlightening. Seems that every nation had some concerns, China, Syria, Israel, everyone. Several nations were particularly challenging both directly and behind the scenes. Still, Baker and his staff get it done and get just about everyone on board. WOW again! The post war use of America's standing to bring the Arabs and Israelis to direct negotiations about the region for the first time ever is equally interesting. It is painful reading to see the petty, backstabbing, truculent, sneaky guts of Mid East diplomacy as Baker describes it. Still, he managed to get the whole region together for the Madrid Conference and a first ever face to face between Israel and many of her Arab neighbors. This was roll up the sleeves shuttle diplomacy at its finest. There is also an interesting bit about the Panama invasion and removal of Noriega. Interestingly, Baker sheds insight into some problems which would flare up later. Notable, his discussion of the difficult negotiations with Russia and Ukraine aimed at removing nukes from Ukraine raise issues which are now on display in the region. This is not an easy read. The book is dense with information and the prose is a bit dry. Overall, the book provides a unique, stunning insight into American diplomacy. Politics of Diplomacy: Revolution, War and Peace, 1989-1992
By Daniel Pipes, Middle East Forum, Philadelphia
Soon after becoming secretary of state, George P. Shultz noted that unless you do something about it, in the job of secretary of state you will spend 100 percent of your time on the Middle East. Every Secretary of State becomes a Middle East expert very rapidly, whether he wants to or not, he also stated. . These observations remain valid today, when Warren Christopher has virtually become Secretary of State for the Middle East. Baker had a similar experience. Page one of his memoirs tells of Saddam Husayns invasion of Kuwait, the single most dangerous moment of Bakers three-years-plus as secretary of state. Of the books thirty-four chapters, fully fifteen concentrate on the Middle East, primarily the Kuwait war and the Arab-Israeli peace process.
Famously discreet when in office, Baker unbuttons a bit in the retelling. He captures the atmosphere of his endless travels (he went to sleep on the eve of his Geneva meeting with Tariq Aziz, just before the outbreak of hostilities, as the chants from antiwar protesters echoed quietly up to our block of rooms) and the vagaries of dealing with Middle Eastern leaders (Asad treated his complaints about Syrian terrorism the way one might react to an eccentric uncle at family gatheringsas an unavoidable nuisance to be endured politely). Baker also provides some new information; for example, in March 1991, he raised to Yitzhak Shamir the possibility of stationing U.S. troops on the Golan Heights.

Good biography, ok for history
By Amazon Customer
This book is a fascinating look at James Baker's tenure as Secretary of State. Baker writes a massive book seperated by area of work; ie one chapter on Eastern Europe, one on the Persian Gulf War, etc.; which causes a little confusion in terms of the timeline, but it is easily sorted out. The one massive flaw is that he makes virtually no mention of Vice President Quayle and some others in the foreign policy process and absolutely lionizes himself. While I realize that this is a memoir, and as such is meant to build up the author, but this seems to go a bit over the edge. IF you want to find out how Baker thought and worked, this is an incredible book. If you are looking for history, read this with many other books.

The author uses all of these 50 cent words. I was reading a story not the Reader's Digest "It Pays to Increase Your Word Power". Also. Note to Sanders:no self-respecting Cajun would use "crawdads" in a dish. These delicacies are properly called "crawfish".

The book was pretty good up to the point it abruptly ended. There is no way the story ended. The Kindle software just did not proceed after the end of a chapter. Still plenty of adventure if I could get to it.

A Royal Duty, by Paul Burrell

Now comes the long awaited book, A ROYAL DUTY by Paul Burrell, the man in whom she confided on matters big and small. Paul, one of the Queen's personal footmen, met Diana during one of her first visits to Balmoral Castle. And while it may have been fate that brought them together, they shared a strong bond that endured to the end of her life. Burrell became Diana's confidant and his unique perspective casts new light on the Princess of Wales and the events that would shape her life and the lives of those around her. At the time of her death there was much speculation about Diana's future plans including her thoughts about remarrying and the possibility of relocating to America. Paul, who was one of the last people to speak with her, hopes to set the record straight for the Princess he so admired and cherished. Drawing on private conversations, personal recollections, diaries and letters, Paul has written an extraordinary account of a unique time in the history of the Royal Family. When asked why he wrote the book, this is what Paul had to say. "I have made this book as true to her spirit as possible-as inspiring, as loving, as fun. Over the last six years I've had time to reflect on the extraordinary events that I have witnessed. During that time, I have watched and listened patiently as many individuals have claimed to know the truth about the Princess of Wales. I have watched and listened knowing that what was claimed to be the truth is actually far from it. I decided reluctantly to tell what I know to be the truth because I firmly believe that someone has to stand in the Princess' corner and fight for her now that she cannot do so. I welcome the official inquest into her death and it is my hope that it will uncover what really happened that night in Paris. I never thought that I would need to write this book but then I never thought that I would need to redress the balance. I never thought that I would need to defend the Princess against untruths from many different quarters. I was devoted to the Royal Family for many years-first to the Queen, then to the Prince of Wales and finally to the Princess and I remain a loyal subject. But I believe that it is important that the truth is known NOW rather than waiting for the details to emerge in official papers when they are released in 25 years."

Review
'Paul Burrell has a terrific story to tell' The Guardian 'A classy production' The Sunday Times

About the Author
Paul Burrell served the Royal family for twenty-one years - as personal footman to the Queen, butler to the Prince and Princess of Wales, and after their separation, butler to Diana. After her tragic death, as fundraising manager of the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, he spearheaded the drive which raised GBP100million in her memory. He is married to Maria, and they live in Cheshire with their two sons.

Touching--and a vindication
By HeyJudy
Immediately after the tragic death of the much-loved Princess of Wales, there came a plethora of books claiming to be offering the real story of the woman behind the glamourous facade. For the most part, those books seemed to be mean-spirited attempts to bash the Princess' memory while at the same time lining their authors' pockets.
Virtually all of these authors appeared to hew to the theory that, since the law does not recognize slander as a legal action when the topic at hand is a deceased party, they then could engage in character assassination, so long as the same re-hashed old tales sold yet more books.
In contrast, A ROYAL DUTY is the rare book which attempts to defend and explain the way in which the Princess of Wales lived her life. Thus, simply for going against the tide, it is valuable.
Perhaps author Paul Burrell is slightly overwrought in his devotion to the late Princess. He's entitled to be. He dedicated his career to her. Reading between the lines, he has not yet gotten over his first glimpse of her corpse, presumably after its autopsy, a sight for which he was emotionally unprepared, and a sight from which her ex-husband and her family must have been shielded.
Was Burrell in love with Diana? Probably, a little bit, in a way that defines the concept of perfect and platonic love. As such, he is her protector. He says that he wrote this book to defend Diana, to explain her side of the story to her sons, and to justify his complete lack of guilt in the witch hunt which Scotland Yard and the royal courtiers mounted against him. On all counts, he makes a compelling case and, reading this book, I came to believe him.
Burrell is affronted by the way in which Prince Charles treated his young bride and Burrell makes it his business to make certain that the world (and, therefore, the couple's sons) know the truth. He also wants to be sure that there is no question but that Diana had not wanted the divorce from Charles, that she had loved Charles when she married him, and that she loved him until the day she died.
Burrell explains the harshness with which Diana consistently was treated by her in-laws' advisors and counselors. He speaks highly of the Queen, his original boss, and also of the Queen's husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. He credits both of them with trying to save the Wales' marriage. He writes that Diana was grateful to each of them for the rest of her short life, remaining in frequent communication with the couple. Burrell is less tolerant, reasonably so, with the indecisive and arrogant Prince of Wales.
Burrell may be even more offended by the Earl Spencer, brother of the late Princess, and by other members of the Spencer family, than he is by the Windsors. In fairness, the Spencers treated both Diana and Burrell far more shabbily than the Royals did.
He cannot understand how the Earl could have offered the Princess use of a house on the family estate, to her obvious elation, and then withdrawn the offer. He cannot understand how, after the Princess made her wishes clear that her wedding dress be placed in a London museum, it has ended up on the Earl's property, in the Earl's private museum, to which he charges admission.
The Spencer family, in concert with Scotland Yard, contrived to charge Burrell with stealing hundreds of the Princess' personal effects, a case that did not hold up in court. Certain truths speak for themselves... and the fact that it was the Queen herself who acknowledged Burrell's right to hold these items in safekeeping was what kept this case from being brought to a jury. She also corroborated some of his evidence, which not only was disputed by the prosecution but also was refuted and leaked to the press, those leaks presumably coming from the prosecution as well.
The book is beautifully written, probably with the assistance of reporter Steve Dennis, thanked in the acknowledgments. And Paul Burrell's wife, Maria, must be a saint to have been only the second lady is his life for all of those years.
Diana was not perfect, but she was a fascinating woman, kind and funny and elegant. Paul Burrell, quite literally, was Diana's loyal servant. By the end of her life, he obviously knew more about the way in which she lived than did her own mother or sisters.
A ROYAL DUTY will prove to be the definitive contemporaneous record of Diana's years as the Princess of Wales.

I could hardly put it down!
By A Customer
This may well be the definitive biography of Diana, Princess of Wales. Paul Burrell has reason to resent the Royal family for putting him through the trial, but instead he shows us their human side. I was enthralled when I read Di's letter after the divorce in which she said she wanted to hug her mother-in-law and when I read Prince Philip's letter signed "Pa". I am sorry that the young princes have spoken out against this book; it tells the truth and does not reflect negatively on any of the Royals.

This book made me feel like I came to know the Princess
By JesusGeek
When it comes to someone with as high a profile as Princess Di, there is a deluge of books and articles, many disappointing and trite.

This book was a book that would have been well worth reading even if I never heard of Di before. I really like how Paul Burrell put enough about himself and his own attitudes in this book so that I could not only see where he was coming from, but also could try to understand better the British attitudes toward royalty. He takes you through a walk of what it was like for him to be the Queen's butler for a while before he gets into the story about Diana, and though I felt impatient at first with this, I realized as I read on that by doing so he helped me to have a much more full and realistic perspective about Diana's life -- not only her choices, but the environment in which she lived.

It was also endearing how he wrote this book as someone with a great love and great respect for the Princess. He reveals a lot of surprising things, and many of them caused me to feel more empathy for Diana than ever before -- and to feel as if I have been introduced to her on a very personal level. It was as if her best friend sat with me over coffee during a 3-day retreat and recounted all that he could divulge without dishonoring pledges made to her. I was kind of surprised that he told as much as he did, being that he was and is so deferential to the Princess, but I suspect she would have wanted it that way. He makes it clear that there are also some things he will take to the grave. Just the way a best friend would.

As I finished this book I felt a sincere gratitude to Paul Burrell for having written it. I had admired Di from afar; now I feel I know her ever so much better, and admire her more than ever as well.

He also softened up my attitude toward the Queen. Not accustomed to royal formalities, she always seemed so formal and cold to me. He really humanized the Queen for me.

It was not like reading a tattler. However I must say that Burrell is a big-time apologist and supporter of the Queen of England. I almost get the feeling he HAS to talk about her positively (or off with his head?). Or maybe she really is as great as he says. What do I know?

Living in God's Love: The New York Crusade, by Billy Graham

Billy Graham's now legendary first New York Crusade in 1957 was a touchstone that affected an entire generation. Nearly fifty years later, the Reverend Billy Graham returned to New York in June 2005 for what was likely his final Crusade, preaching the power of God's love to hundreds of thousands of people over three life-changing evenings.

Living in God's Love contains all three sermons from this important event, and includes an original introduction and an afterword both written by Billy Graham specifically for this book. Living in God's Love also features black-and-white photographs from the 2005 New York Crusade, and a moving foreword by his daughter Anne Graham Lotz.

Billy Graham's message of the transforming power of Christ's love is one that is needed now more than ever.

About the Author
The Reverend Billy Graham has preached the Gospel to more people in a live-audience format than anyone else in history-more than 210 million people, in more than 185 countries and territories. Hundreds of millions more have been reached through television, video, film, and web-casts. Graham founded the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) in 1950, and has authored many bestselling books, including Peace with God, Hope for the Troubled Heart, and his memoir, Just As I Am.

From AudioFile
This is a live recording of Billy Graham's 2005 crusade in Flushing Meadows, New York. Billy Graham delivers three powerful messages on sin, salvation, hope, and love. His characteristic style of engaging the audience through humor and storytelling is evident. Often the audience will burst into applause as he tells of some current event and then drives home a spiritual truth or principle. His love for God and his devotion to people in pain is evident through his passionate plea for men and women to accept Jesus Christ into their hearts. As Graham nears the end of his preaching career, this audiobook will become a lasting memory of his influence over the past five decades.
