Forty years ahead of today's privacy concerns, this cops-and-robbers tale of the ubiquitous surveillance available to the State was a cautionary tale in the '70s, and a harbinger of our NSA/Google/Apple society of 100% tracking and bugging.

Mark's Story:(Jesus Chronicles (Putnam)), by Tim LaHaye, Jerry B. Jenkins

Mark's Story opens on the evening of the last day of Jesus as man. The young Mark hears Jesus' prophecies of the events that are to come, and bears witness to some of the most pivotal events in human history, including Judas Iscariot's betrayal, Peter's denial of his Master, and Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection as the risen Lord.

In the years after, following in the footsteps of his friend and mentor Peter, Mark becomes an ardent follower of Jesus and a devoted disciple of Christianity, spreading the Word beyond Jerusalem and into the world. Mark urges Peter to recount to him the stories of Jesus' life on Earth-His messages, His miracles, and His everlasting promises to His people-and compiles what becomes canonized as the Gospel of Mark.

Mark chronicles the growth of the early Christian church, the struggles of Jesus' followers, and the persecution they endured from a hostile world. Mark's Story is a thrilling account that vividly depicts the last day before Jesus' crucifixion and the danger that early believers faced as they boldly proclaimed Jesus as Christ the Lord. Their bravery laid the foundation for the early church, and their fervent passion for the Word reverberates throughout the world today.

The new Kay Scarpetta novel from the world's #1 bestselling crime writer.

"When it comes to the forensic sciences, nobody can touch Cornwell."
-The New York Times Book Review

Port Mortuary, the title of Patricia Cornwell's eighteenth Scarpetta novel, is literally a port for the dead. In this fast-paced story, a treacherous path from Scarpetta's past merges with the high- tech highway she now finds herself on. We travel back to the beginning of her professional career, when she accepted a scholarship from the Air Force to pay off her medical school debt. Now, more than twenty years and many career successes later, her secret military ties have drawn her to Dover Air Force Base, where she has been immersed in a training fellowship.

As the chief of the new Cambridge Forensic Center in Massachusetts, a joint venture of the state and federal governments, MIT and Harvard, Scarpetta is confronted with a case that could shut down her new facility and ruin her personally and professionally.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Cornwell's compelling 18th Kay Scarpetta novel (after The Scarpetta Factor), her strongest work in years, involves the chief medical examiner in a case that's both far-reaching in its national security implications and deeply personal. The story begins at the real Port Mortuary at Dover Air Force Base, where Scarpetta is assisting in developing techniques for virtual autopsies, then shifts back to her recently adopted home at Boston's Cambridge Forensic Center (CFC). A young man's mysterious death becomes even stranger after full-body scans reveal destruction so extensive it's as if a bomb went off inside his body. Scarpetta and husband Benton Wesley-along with her niece, Lucy Farinelli, and ex-cop turned CFC investigator Pete Marino-discover links not only to a government project with the ability to cause mass casualties but also to another grisly case currently under investigation. As Scarpetta's military past rears its head, the emotional damage the investigation of the cases is bound to wreak on Cornwell's steadfast heroine will leave readers eager for the next installment. Long-time fans will welcome the return after a decade to a first-person narration with direct access to Scarpetta's thoughts.

From Booklist
Cornwell returns to form—somewhat—after the plodding Scarpetta Factor (2009). Told in the first person, the story finds Kay Scarpetta, now the chief medical examiner of the new Cambridge Forensic Center in Massachusetts, involved in a couple of cases: the mysterious sudden death of a man and the murder of a child (whose confessed killer seems to be innocent). Soon she begins to suspect the two cases are related—joined by a piece of high-tech hardware found in the first victim’s apartment—and before too long, she realizes she’s facing what could be her most clever foe yet. For the first time in a while, Cornwell seems genuinely interested in Scarpetta again, giving the novel that spark of life that has made the series so enjoyable for its many fans. The book is still a long way from the glory days of Postmortem (1991) and From Potter’s Field (1995), but it’s definitely a step in the right direction. Series fans who have felt a bit let down of late will be pleased. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Print, radio, television, in-person, billboards, Twitter, Facebook, iPhone apps—about the only thing Putnam isn’t doing to promote Cornwell’s latest is a graffiti campaign. --David Pitt

Not the Kay Scarpetta I used to know
By Barbi
After discovering and devouring Patricia Cornwell's "Postmortem" (now 20 years ago), my family and I have been huge fans of the Kay Scarpetta novels. Over the years, we eagerly awaited the release of Ms. Cornwell's next novel, always confident that it would surpass her last. Until something changed and Ms. Cornwell forgot how to tell an interesting story. Instead of flying effortlessly through her books, I now find myself slogging through them, falling asleep over them, yawning through endless pages of dreary detail and introspective angst. I keep hoping that the books will get better, but they don't. I gave up halfway through "The Scarpetta Factor" (2009), but actually read all of "Port Mortuary" (2010). Like "The Scarpetta Factor," Ms. Cornwell's latest offering is a self-indulgent bore. This book features mysteries within mysteries that are not revealed until the bitter end. By then, I didn't care. There's no suspense, no thrill, no passion. The characters that formerly had been drawn with such precision and care are now lackluster at best. Throughout the book, Kay can't figure out how to ask a direct question nor get a direct answer from anyone, including but not limited to Benton (her husband) and Lucy (her niece). That Kay seemingly has so little self-esteem that she would accept everyone's lack of forthright responses is completely contrary to her former strong, confident and capable self. After finally (FINALLY!) reaching the end of "Port Mortuary," I was disconcerted by the complete change of voice in the last few pages of the book. It's almost as though Ms. Cornwell's editor compelled her to tack on a page or two to make it appear that Kay has a soul after all. Ms. Cornwell, please bring back the Kay Scarpetta we used to know and love!

Not her best effort
By madscientist_13
I am a long time fan of Patricia Cornwell and I wait each year for my book to be delivered so that I can delve back into the world of Scarpetta, Benton and Lucy. That being said, I was disappointed with this book. Disappointed in a way that I cannot quite find words for, which disturbs me greatly. I found it heavy, not in a good way, pedantic, bogged down by pointless material that was at many times inconsequential to the story line and the ending was in no way a resolution to the stress between Benton and Scarpetta.

I do like the fact that the perspective switched back to a first person point of view through Scarpetta's eyes because I think everything should be viewed through her eyes the way they once were. I also thought it was good to shine a measure of light on topics that rarely get talked about in fiction. All of this said, I was still depressed by this book because I know how much better the Scarpetta books can be and I just had a hard time with this book as a whole. And as a final note, I know that hardcore Scarpetta fans will not be deterred just as I wouldn't have been because I just had to know myself, but that said, I found the humanity, the relationships and the basic foundation that makes the series so good to me lacking in this novel.

Scarpetta is dead.
By Teresa3607
I've been a Scarpetta fan for several years, but the last few books have been a real stretch of the imagination. The science is brilliant, the writing is superb, but I can no longer find any sympathy for the characters. There is no passion between Scarpetta and Benton. Scarpetta does not seem to be stable and I fear that the next book will have her tip over the edge and truly become the antagonist. In Port Mortuary, she's changed jobs and locales yet again and a hidden chapter of her past is revealed. This is too far-fetched for my imagination, primarily because if this had been such a scarring experience for Scarpetta it seems that is should have been at least alluded to in one of the earlier books.

This will be the last Scarpetta book that I read. Sadly, the Kay Scarpetta I loved no longer exists.

From Publishers Weekly
Hutcherson, codirector of the New York Center for Human Sexuality at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, believes that many women have unfulfilling sex lives. They may be hesitant to speak to their partners, uneasy about their appearance or, most likely, they simply have questions they've never been able to ask about sex. An obstetrician and gynecologist for more than 20 years, Hutcherson believes the key to better sex is knowledge. She offers a comprehensive look at men and women's bodies, including key information about erogenous zones, as well as chapters on different elements of sex, such as kissing, intercourse and oral stimulation. Hutcherson also discusses special topics such as sex during pregnancy and after menopause, and has a useful, albeit too brief, chapter on teaching daughters the facts. Complete with diagrams of anatomy and sex positions, this book is aimed at helping women first become more comfortable with their own sexuality, then work on their sexual relationships. Hutcherson's suggestions about massage, getting away from the kids for a weekend and being creative in bed are not unique. But her approach is so thorough and the writing so reassuring that even readers who would otherwise never pick up a sex manual will likely be comfortable with and grateful for this book.

From Library Journal
Would that all mothers knew as much about sex as gynecologist and Columbia University professor Hutcherson! Her book, divided into five parts, is comprehensive yet neither confusing nor overwhelming. She begins with a section on female and male sexual anatomy, going into much detail about the vulva/vagina and offering a useful list of "things to do with a soft penis." Part 2 is a basic sex manual that discusses kissing, touch, outercourse, oral sex, anal sex, intercourse, and "enhancers." The next part covers keeping in shape, birth control, and safer sex, followed by a section on sex during pregnancy, aging sexuality, and talking to one's daughter. Part 5 is especially thorough, covering a wide variety of medical problems and psychological issues, from the effects of diseases and medications on sex to sexual dysfunctions. Even with all this detail, the book is a user-friendly and easy read, with sidebars and good illustrations. Although heterosexually focused, it's gay-friendly. This reviewer's only wish is for even more illustrations. If you have limited funds for updating your public library collection on female sexuality, this is the book to buy. All Sorts of Sometimes Graphic Sexual Information Presented Tastefully
By ratty
Designed pretty much for various ages of women, this book is a very graphic how-to and what-it-is book. It covers not only sex, but the normal differences in genitalia, arousal, and other aspects of anatomy and physiology. They didn't cover all that in sex ed in 1978! It does include depictions of various sexual acts, but they are in tasteful line drawings--no photos. All-in-all a difficult subject is covered very thoroughly and well.

Great book very informative and to the point
By Keren Zayas Ruiz
Great book very informative and to the point. No judgement type book and covers wide range of subjects. Good for a woman of any age who just has questions about her body, her sex life, and who needs advice on how to give "the talk" to their daughter. I love this book. Thank you Hilda Hutcherson.

Neither My Mother or Father ...
By J Crutchfield
Neither my mother nor my father mentioned things in this book. I have learned a lot along the way, but nothing like reading a well conceived text to enhance one's knowledge. It is well done.

I am dating a lovely woman from a relatively conservative culture. I purchased this book to help me understand how to communicate what can be delicate and intimate topics for people in a relationship especially when articulating sexual topics, technique, anatomy, and new experiences - that might not be easily accomplished. The book has given me some excellent background knowledge and view points that will help me to communicate and give more to my girlfriend. I have found it useful and when my girlfriend reads it I am certain it will be very helpful for her understanding and communicating about sex, bodies, approaches and desires. I appreciate a book such as this.

Summer of Storms, by Judith Kelman

Anna Jamieson was only three when her five-year-old sister, Julie, was murdered while her family slept through a tempestuous hurricane, one of many in a season that had been dubbed the Summer of Storms.

For thirty years, Anna has been haunted by mental pictures of that night-crude composites that remain grainy and indistinct. But now Anna has returned to New York City, the scene of this horrendous, unsolved crime, and events are about to unfold that will make her fuzzy memories all too frighteningly clear.

As her work as a photojournalist begins to expose the dark underside of the glittering city, Anna unwittingly crosses paths with a fiendishly clever killer. While her search for the truth races toward a chilling conclusion, she must distinguish between allies and enemies, and realize that, ultimately, there is no one to trust but herself.

Amazon.com Review
The still-unsolved murder of her 3-year-old sister Julie has haunted Anna Jameson's dreams since childhood. Tantalizing bits and pieces of that hurricane-tossed night tease her memory, but she's put it behind her and tried to move on with her life--unlike her parents, who left New York after the tragedy and still don't venture very far from their Charleston home. Now Anna has an opportunity to make her mark as a photographer in New York, and despite her mother's worry and warning, she takes it. Much of the first half of this somewhat slow-moving suspense story covers Anna's efforts to make a place for herself, professionally and personally. But then another perspective intrudes: that of a group of forensic psychologists, known collectively as the Arcanum, who study "cold" cases and try to close them, often years after the fact. The "Sleeping Beauty Murder," as the killing of little Julie Jameson is known, suddenly takes on new urgency when an anonymous someone with inside knowledge of those past events gets the experts involved again.

Despite the obvious parallels to the Jon Benet Ramsey case (including the suspicion that a family member killed the little girl), it's never made clear why a 30-year-old murder should still capture so much attention. The characterizations of the Arcanum members are so thin and one-dimensional that we don't care about them, except to note that author Judith Kelman seems to have a particular dislike of one of the experts she sketches, a media-hungry, spotlight-grabbing, and thoroughly unpleasant psychologist who's almost as awful as Anna's new boss, a tyrannical newspaper publisher. Kelman's written more than a dozen solid thrillers (Fly Away Home,, After the Fall, etc.), but this one seems slight and full of extraneous characters, intentionally misleading clues and McGuffins, and unfulfilled expectations. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Set in a shadowy and sinister New York City, this taut and assured suspense thriller by Kelman (After the Fall, etc.) chronicles the rekindling of a long-dormant murder investigation and the return of a ruthless killer. Thirty years after her young sister's death, Anna Jameson is haunted by memories of what was dubbed the Sleeping Beauty Murder. On a stormy summer night, five-year-old Julie Jameson was killed in her bedroom while her family slept. Following this horror, her anguished parents fled Manhattan with three-year-old Anna and moved to South Carolina, where they never quite recovered from the shock. Fast-forward to Anna, now 33 and an aspiring photographer, who returns to New York to work as a photojournalist for a high-powered media conglomerate and to confront family demons. Armed with her camera, she becomes acclimated to the perils of the city: she captures a drug deal on film, escapes a would-be rapist and shoots a newspaper expos‚ of her neighborhood's prostitution ring. Meanwhile, Arcanum, an elite volunteer group of colorful forensic experts devoted to investigating unsolved homicides, receives an anonymous phone call from a woman who warns that Julie's killer may strike again. The group takes on the case privately, inevitably colliding with Anna in its researches. The body count rises as a spooky electrician, a fugitive serial killer, a heroic cop and assorted others cloud the picture. Swift pacing and well-drawn supplementary characters--like the bombastic media mogul Stewart Burlingame and Dixon Drake, a reporter who takes Anna under his wing--come together in this smooth page-turner that's sure to have fans reading into the wee hours of the night. Agent, Peter Lampack.

A Hitchcockian suspense thriller
By A Customer
Thirty years ago, Hurricane Queenie battered New York City. The storm made so much noise that no one in the next room heard the struggles of five- year old Julie Jamieson when she was murdered. The police investigated everyone connected to Julie, but failed to find the guilty party. To escape the media and the ghosts, the family fled to Charleston, South Carolina where they still grieve their loss.

The dreams of Anna, Julie's younger sister, come true when her uncle finds her a job as a photographer for a major publisher. The only catch is the job is in the Big Apple. Over the objections of her mother, Anna accepts it. As Ana moves into an apartment in Brooklyn, the Arcaneum, a semi-secret organization consisting of law enforcement officials, decide to relook Julie's murder. These two events trigger the return of a killer who has definitive plans for Anna.

Judith Kelman, known for her superior psychological suspense tales, creates a gothic style story line that sends shivers up and down the spine of the reader. The villain is hidden in plain sight with nobody suspecting the identity of the killer until it is almost too late. SUMMER OF STORMS is also a psychological drama about a family unable to attain closure over the abrupt violent death of a loved one. This absorbing novel will keep the audience's attention even if a thunderstorm booms overhead.

A fantastic read ...
By Brett
Judith Kelman's "Summer of Storms" provides the reader with an extraordinary insight into the minds of its characters. As the Jameson family deals with the 30-year old legacy of their young daughter Julie's unsolved murder, the reader cannot help but share the frustration of their lingering pain and their growing terror as the murderer reenters their lives. Kelman's unique ability to engage her readers in the experiences of her characters has been pervasive through each of her (now) twelve novels. "Summer of Storms" is certainly no exception ... a wonderfully gripping tale.

Captivating characters, intense suspense
By Ivan L. Wolff
A JonBenét Ramsey-like case forms the backdrop for this intense novel about Anna Jameson's search to make sense of and identify the murderer of her sister, Julie, 30 years ago. This fast-paced book has Kelman's typically extraordinarily interesting main characters including Anna's family, her blustering editor Stuart Burlingame and her colleague, Dixon Drake. Even more fascinating are a host of supporting characters such as her landlord and a particularly loathsome customer at her photography studio. Perhaps the most unusual and engaging is the Arcanum, an elite group of criminal science and behavior experts dedicated to solving cold murder cases. I absolutely recommend Summer of Storms for all fans of fast-moving well-crafted suspense.

Funny Cide, by Sally Jenkins, LLC Funny Cide Ventures

In 2003, he became "the people's horse," the unheralded New York-bred gelding who-in a time of war and economic jitters-inspired a nation by knocking off the champions and their multimillionaire owners and sweeping to the brink of the Triple Crown. Trained by a journeyman who had been knocking around racing for more than thirty years, ridden by a hard-luck jockey, and owned by a tiny stable founded by a band of high school buddies from Sackets Harbor, NY (pop: 1,386), who tossed in a few thousand dollars each and decided to follow their dream, Funny Cide became a blue-collar hero with a bit, his story crammed with colorful characters-only one of which happened to be a horse.

Written with Sally Jenkins, coauthor of Lance Armstrong's number-one bestseller It's Not About the Bike, Funny Cide tells the whole story-the parts we know and the parts we never suspected-as it follows the group's emotional ups and downs against overwhelming odds, illness, and even scandal, to capture the imagination of millions. It is a book for the underdog in all of us-a new American classic.

From Booklist
There is a natural tendency, mostly avoided by Jenkins if not by this book's prepublication publicity, to reshape the story of Funny Cide into the rags-to-riches mold of Seabiscuit. It doesn't really fit, but the story of Funny Cide, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner of 2002, is dramatic enough on its own merits. And like the story of Seabiscuit, it is inextricably intertwined with the stories of the horse's no-nonsense trainer, his aging jockey, and his owners, an unconventional crew of 10 upstate New Yorkers, 6 of whom were high-school buddies. This makes for a wealth of material, and Jenkins, like Laura Hillenbrand in her remarkable book on Seabiscuit, mines every vein for its most telling nuggets, then organizes them into a compelling narrative about unlikely heroes achieving extraordinary things. Every Kentucky Derby winner is a miracle wrought by talent, hard work, and good fortune against incredible odds, but Funny Cide was more miraculous than most, and his story, so ably told, is irresistible. From AudioFile
Sally Jenkins introduces an unlikely cast of characters whose paths crossed at just the right moment, and through a strange series of events, to unleash the "people's horse" on the racing world--propelling an unlikely gelding on to win the Kentucky Derby. Jamey Sheridan's homey, low-key voice is a perfect choice to narrate the story. He offers the perspectives of the horse's working-class owners, trainers, and jockey, all with a believable humility. He easily conveys the roller-coaster ride of owning a racehorse that performs beyond the dreams of everyone involved. Sheridan's own enthusiasm for this unbelievable story makes the book read as a novel, rather than the racing history that it is. Even those who know nothing about horse racing will enjoy the folksy combination of the Funny Cide team, Jenkins's informal but thorough writing, and Sheridan's skilled reading. Funny Cide, the best gelding of the 21st century
By A Customer
Funny Cide was an exceptional racehorse. The gelding came out of nowhere to win the Kentucky derby! that's worth writing about. His story was closely followed in a way that you cannot see on television or read in the newspapers everything that happened. A great book to read. Funny Cide outstandingly successes Seabiscuit as the underdog that triumphed in the sport of kings.

fast-paced equine biography
By E.M. Bristol
Funny Cide was the 2003 winner of both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness (two legs of the prestigious horse racing Triple Crown). He was an underdog in the truest sense: unimpressive bloodlines and birthplace, with a jockey considered washed-up, and a group of owners from New York, who were neither outrageously rich or very horse savvy. In fact, they arrived at the Derby in a schoolbus: a handful of friends who had known each other since high school, who were in it for a good time and a way to bond.

Funny Cide's journey to the most well-known horse race in America is fast paced, funny and irreverent as many of the people closely associated with the colt. A must for horse lovers and racing fans - and everyone who loves to root for the underdog.

Good read, but not truly a "horse story"
By Rebecca L. Obuchowski
Sally Jenkins does a good job of telling the success story of Funnycide's career leading up to the "big three", but it's not your typical horse story. If you're loking for the insight on the how's and why's leading up to Funnycide's victory from the horse world's prespective, you will be let down. This reads as a biography of the entire Funnycide team (still a story worth being told). It's a great read for non-horsepeople, but those who are into horses and the world of racing will be disappointed from the perspective it is written from.

Uneasy Lies the Head, by Jean Plaidy

From exile and war to love and loss—every dynasty has a beginning.

Henry Tudor was not born to the throne of England. Having come of age in a time of political turmoil and danger, the man who would become Henry VII spent fourteen years in exile in Brittany before returning triumphantly to the Dorset coast with a small army and decisively winning the Battle of Bosworth Field—ending the War of the Roses once and for all and launching the infamous Tudor dynasty.

As Henry’s claim to the throne was tenuous, his marriage to Elizabeth of York, daughter and direct heir of King Edward IV, not only served to unify the warring houses, it also helped Henry secure the throne for himself and for generations to come. And though their union was born from political necessity, it became a wonderful love story that led to seven children and twenty happy years together.
Sweeping and dramatic, To Hold the Crown brings readers inside the genesis of the great Tudor empire: through Henry and Elizabeth’s troubled ascensions to the throne, their marriage and rule, the heartbreak caused by the death of their son Arthur, and, ultimately, to the crowning of their younger son, King Henry VIII.

“Plaidy excels at blending history with romance and drama.”

From the back cover "And though their union was born from political necessity, it became a wonderful love story..." Huh? You have to wonder sometimes what is going through the publisher's heads - the marriage of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York was not a love match by any means - why would they try to label it as one??

Originally published as Uneasy Lies the Head, this book covers the reign of Henry VII following the defeat of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. With a very tenuous claim on the throne of England Henry marries Elizabeth of York, eldest daughter of Edward IV, in an effort to strengthen his claim. Despite keeping peace in the country and restoring the empty coffers, Henry is always fearful of conspiracies to challenge his reign with pretenders to the throne claiming to be one of the lost princes in the tower.

So much of this book is known history, we've all read enough of the Tudors I don't need to rehash it all again. The book takes the reader from the beginning of Henry's reign until the end and at his death and the assumption to the throne of his son Henry VIII. Although I did enjoy this book very much, it was a bit dry at times, especially at the beginning, and those not familiar with the Wars of The Roses might have a difficult time picking up the story.

Henry was nicely portrayed as a parsimonious penny pincher always worried about threats to his crown, the younger Henry a bit too full of himself and his "knightly" responsibilities, Katharine of Aragon suitably pious and obedient - my only complaint was the how Elizabeth of York was portrayed. A virtually non-existent character, the few times she was in the storyline she was quite vapid and very forgettable. She was pretty much there for the procreation of children. All in all a pleasant read, not the best but not the worst either. 3.5/5 stars.

A tormented King
By Lavanya Ramanujan
I definitely started reading this book as non believer. How would you ever expect to sympathise with Henry VII? He who desroyed the plantagenets and an upstart with no right to the throne of England? And yet, as I read, Jean Plaidy wove a tale that might suggest the reasons for the man he was. Firmly believing he could set England straight - a thrifty king who made England rich, the book brings out the reasons for all his decisions. Uneasy lies the head is an apt title for this book, for he was uneasy about how he claimed the throne. All the blood that flowed between him and the legacy haunting him to the very end. His tormented soul is a mirror to read in this book.

Not her best work, but still very good historical fiction
By M.Jacobsen
I have a love affair going with historical fiction author Jean Plaidy.

It's Plaidy that I turn to when I crave a good comfort-read.

This novel is Plaidy's take on the story of the marriage between King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York: the marriage which effectively ended the War of the Roses by uniting the houses of York and Lancaster.

Like her other historical fiction novels, To Hold the Crown will never be compared to, say, a Sharon Kay Penman novel. Plaidy, rather, exists in a class of her own: solid writing and a good historical foundation make her stories feel comfortable.

Kind of like your favorite pair of old sneakers.

The story of Henry and Elizabeth has been written about numerous times, but I still think Plaidy does it best. You won't find any heros or villains in this story. Instead you'll find human beings who make mistakes and are trying to do the best they can with the tools they have. Plaidy is the consummate professional: she presents each character in a fair light, flaws and all, and allows the readers to draw their own conclusions, as opposed to leading you to those conclusions.

Those of you who are still tracking down the infamous Princes in the Tower will find an interesting idea as to their ultimate fate within these pages. Plaidy, as always, is plausible and sharp as a tack.

What didn't I like? The darned new cover chosen by Three Rivers Press!
For now, I'll forgive them simply because they are reprinting so many of Plaidy's historical fiction novels.

If you haven't read one, do so soon. And if you've read Sandra Worth's recent novel, The King's Daughter, you'll recognize that the subject matter is the same. For my money, I recommend Plaidy's version for a more complete and perhaps a more realistic look at the lives of Henry and Elizabeth.

Six individuals have survived the epidemic and are now committed to the task of rebuilding a peaceful civilization. But not everyone shares the same vision, and soon two very different societies begin to form.

As we follow a child from each "family," someone-or something-begins to threaten their innocence. And as the mystery mounts, a mutated strain of Black Ep makes a deadly return. Now the architects who gave breath to this new world must scramble to protect their children from a two-front assault.

From Publishers Weekly
Sagan revisits the future world of his well-received debut, 2003's Idlewild. The narrator of that story, Halloween, is now a minor character; there's a new generation trying to survive after the "Microbial Apocalypse," when the Black Ep virus wiped out all but a handful of humans. Sagan focuses primarily on the younger set, upon whose shoulders the hope of a future rests, telling the story through numerous first-person narrators. An early chapter from the POV of Malachi, the "right-hand machine" of Halloween's contemporary Pandora, succinctly explains the setup and lists the players (readers may find themselves frequently returning to it). What's left of the population is divided into two rival colonies. In the north live a group of young "posthumans," biochemically engineered girls who are immune to Black Ep, and their guardians. The liveliest and fiercest of these adolescents is 15-year-old Penny. In the south, there's a religious colony of people drugged to the gills against the virus, one of whom is the philosophical naïf Haji, whose poetic narration makes a nice counterpoint to that of the increasingly angry Penny. Penny, Haji and Pandora provide distinct voices, but other narrators muddy the waters. A killing and the threat of a new plague bubble under the plot's surface but never take center-stage urgency. Sagan's sharp observations and rich imagination entertain, though, and lay a strong groundwork for volume three.

From Booklist
In the gripping sequel to Idlewild [BKL Je 1 & 15 03], the Black Ep plague has wiped out humankind, with the exception of 10 genetically engineered "posthumans" reared in an Immersive Virtual Reality with computer programs seeing to their every need. Edenborn opens 37 years after the catastrophe. Six of the original 10 are still alive, but "only four remain committed to repopulating the Earth." Vashti and Champagne are in Germany with their nine "offspring" posthumans, biochemically and genetically optimized to defeat Black Ep. Isaac and his five creations, humans who ward off the plague they carry with constant medication, live in Egypt. Pandora, aided by the computer program Malachi, maintains the IVR and plays intermediary between the German and Egyptian camps. The story's heart lies in the complexity of the characters' psyches, motivations, and relationships, which propel the action and augment the overriding sense of desperation. It's complicated, but enthusiasts for Idlewild will be intrigued and look forward to another book, for where the overall plot is heading is anybody's guess. Sally Estes

strong speculative fiction apocalyptic thrillers
By A Customer
Humanity and the other primates are on the verge of extinction. The bioengineered weapon Black EP caused the deaths of all the humans on Earth but all was not lost. The scientists of Gedaechthis genetically engineered humans with unbelievable immune systems and since nobody was left alive to care for them they were raised in Immersiveve Virtual Reality. Six of these children survived all carriers of Black EP and all committed to repopulating the earth via clones and artificial wombs.

The next generation of post-humans is getting ready to take their place in society to carry on the work of their parents and try to find a cure for Black Ep. Most of the people alive spend as much time as they can in virtual reality because it is a much better place than the decimated earth. However, some unknown person is tinkering with the VR and letting secrets out that cause divisiveness and leads to that person going on a killing spree aimed at the last of the humans. A new form of Black Ep has surfaced and if a cure is not found, the end of the human race is at hand.

Although Edenborn takes place in an unspecified future, the technology that the book is based on exists today in a more primitive form. One has to admire these people who refuse to let mankind become extinct even though at times they want to give up because they don't see any progress made. Nick Sagan has written a compelling work that will appeal to fans of speculative fiction and apocalyptic thrillers.

Spoiled brats of the future make trouble
By Michael Bond
In Idlewild, the first of this 3-part story, we meet the protagonist, Hal, a teen who battles first the computer host of the Matrix-like virtual school he attends and then one of his fellow students who has become homicidal.

Now, 18 years have passed and we meet a second generation of teens, human and post-human clones. While the 1st genners are working to cure the plague, their children seem content to bicker and fight all the time, spoiled no doubt by being the only children on the planet. The story is told from (too) many points of view, with Penny, an angry teen offering the most input. Half way through the book, Hal gets more involverd. I quickly got tired of the bickering among the teenagers.

We see that in this ideal community, this Eden, a place of material plenty and no threats from outsiders, human nature is the serpent, the source of conflict. Anger and violance, jealousy and revenge exact a terrible toll on the group. Is it possible for humankind to survive itself? We're not sure.

Plot issues: The ability to keep things running after so long is never really addressed. Where does power come from? Utilities? Look, I know it is a work of fiction, but these people are making trans-Atlantic flights in jets and helicopters (?) that have sat idle for two decades. I suppose it could be worse. The record for old-equipment-reuse goes to L. Ron Hubbard who have uneducated humans flying jets that had set idle nearly 1000 years. The book never explains that, or how they keep eating from food stores. Other than Spam and Twinkies, what else lasts that long? I suppose that if you can re-animate a frozen person, you can thaw out some broccoli.

I feel like some reviewers are rating these books high because of their admiration for the late father of the author. But these books must stand by themselves. Like the first of this set, Idlewild, I like the idea but the execution could be better.

A bittersweet mixture of tradgey and self discovery
By Bookreporter
There's a fascinating sadness about Nick Sagan's EDENBORN.

It builds, page-by-page, into a gut level conviction that all the hope and potential combined in his futuristic characters will not be enough to overcome the relentless extinction of humanity. In fact, we readers may well be traveling the last journey with our not-so-distant descendants.

Sagan builds on some speculative premises already familiar to science fiction fans of all periods and persuasions: worldwide plague wipes out all but a few dozen humans; super-sophisticated technology allows remaining humans to isolate themselves from infection; technology combined with old-fashioned human vices proves an even greater threat to their survival. Will there be another generation? Will the deadly disease strike again without warning?

Sagan provides much information but deliberately few direct answers. So if the ending is a drop-kick into almost certain biological oblivion and the means are well-worn genre cliches, is there a point to it all? I'm glad to assert there is --- and it's expressed with a riveting poignancy far beyond most writers of such recent emergence.

Drawing on the imaginative energy of young minds caught in a psychological web between real time and virtual existence, Sagan unfolds EDENBORN as a series of interwoven personal narratives by a cast of chemically constructed new humans. Nurtured in a utopian virtual reality "womb" by infertile adults desperate to preserve the human genome, their children must face the challenge of being weaned into a devastated planet where humans no longer matter.

Yet each member of Sagan's eccentric, winsome, and fatally flawed family is drawn with an eloquent devotion and care that raises EDENBORN far above the usual plague-tale formula. The outcome is a bittersweet mixture of tragedy and self-discovery that will resonate with readers of all ages, and leave us all asking better questions about the future we are making now.

How often have we heard complaints like these?

“Why don’t my kids do what I say?”
“Who made the mess in here?”
“When will my teen make better choices?”

These are the kinds of questions that parents ask that lead not only to complaining, but to victim thinking, procrastination, and blaming. The solution: Learn to parent the QBQ® way – and bring personal accountability to life within our families.

Based on the same concepts that have made John Miller’s signature work, QBQ: The Question Behind the Question, an international bestseller over the last decade, Parenting the QBQ Way provides the tool called the QBQ or The Question Behind the Question that will help every parent look behind questions such as “Why won’t my kids listen?” or “When will they do what I ask?” to find better ones—QBQs—like “What can I do differently?” or “How can I improve as a parent?” This simple but challenging concept turns the focus – and responsibility – back to parents and to what they can do to make a difference.

With thoughtful commentary, observation, and advice, illustrated with engaging and memorable anecdotes that are the hallmarks of John Miller’s previous books, Parenting the QBQ Way provides all moms and dads with the means and inspiration to be more effective parents – as well as teach their children how to practice their own brand of personal accountability – to create a happy, healthy family for a lifetime.

Parenting Advice I Can Actually Use and Put Into Practice ASAP!
By Wisconsin Hockey Moms
I just finished reading a fabulous book called, "Parenting the QBQ Way: How to Be an Outstanding Parent and Raise Great Kids Using the Power of Personal Accountability."

Now, don't roll your eyes at me. I know we are all "perfect" parents and we have heard and seen lots of books on parenting. However, all I can say about this one is "WOW!" It's a super quick read with some of the best parenting advice and insight I've read anywhere. I know, I know...who has time to read, right? I get it, each chapter is only a couple of pages long so you are able to take in the message and put the book down until you are ready for the next lesson.

QBQ stands for the "Question Behind the Question." It's about asking "How" and "What." If we start questions with "Why," "When," or "Who," they lead to "victim" thinking. In the end, we are parents...not victims though sometimes we feel that way!

It's turned a lot of my thinking about parenting around and has introduced a novel concept to me, "personal accountability." Truly, once parents (including myself) accept our role in our child's behavior, we will see a change for the better in our homes and families.

My favorite quote in the book (and it is full of great quotes) is that "when it comes to my child--I own the result." The other one I love, "Our children become what we expect of them." Thus, using words of encouragement, leading by example, being present for them when they talk to us, and using a loving but firm approach are all methods covered in detail in "QBQ."

If you are looking for a summer read at the pool, beach, or in my case, the ice rink, I highly recommend "Parenting the QBQ Way." My book is underlined now and penciled in with my notes or I'd let you borrow mine!

President of Dare 2 Share

When I first cracked open Parenting the QBQ Way I was expecting another good book on parenting. Instead what I found was a GREAT one! This book contains a powerful, paradigm-shifting philosophy that challenges parents to take responsibility for raising responsible kids. Too often we, as parents, relegate, delegate or abdicate this rare brand of personal responsibility. But in his excellent book John Miller helps us discover how to stop being victims and start being victors when it comes to parenting. This book has the gravitas to transform a couple's parenting style and the real-life, practical truths to equip them to do it right away. As the President of an organization that deals with tens of thousands of teenagers every year I am convinced that parents need to learn how to take responsibility and teach their children to do the same. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to every parent!
