Life often sucks... and is pretty funny for those who are watching...

This is the book you need to read if you think you're having a bad day... F My Life World Tour: Life's Crappiest Moments from Around the Globe by Maxime Valette, Guillaume Passaglia, and Didier Gudej. It won't change what happened to cause your bad day, but you *should* end up laughing at others who haven't exactly enjoyed their day either. I finally had to leave the room as I kept interrupting my wife with "let me read you just one more..."

F My Life (yes, it's the F word, but the acronym commonly used is FML) is a web site where people can send in their FML gems that prove that people (and life) can often be cruel... and funny for those reading about it. Each page in this book has from four to six FML moments from around the globe. Some are embarrassing, such as "Today, I broke my little toe. It got stuck in my underwear as I struggled to get a leg through. FML". Some are sad, such as "Today, I got stuck in a hospital elevator from 10:30 to 11:45. I'm now the proud father of a daughter named Maria. She was born at 10:55. FML." Many are cruel, like "Today, it's been three days since I ran into my boyfriend's scantily clad sister in his apartment. Today, I realized that he doesn't have a sister. FML" But nearly all of them are laugh-worthy, for instance... "Today, my girlfriend looked through the contents of my refrigerator and started with her usual 'You're a pig, you never clean up' routine. She said, 'Look at this egg, it makes me want to throw up, it's black, covered in fur, AND THERE'S EVEN HAIR ON IT!' I took a look: It was a kiwi. FML"

I realize it's not nice to laugh at other peoples' misfortune, and you definitely don't want to laugh at them in their presence. But if they shared it online, I think it's fair game, and F My Life World Tour is perfect for plenty of laughs. For some reason, the Mafia--and not the all-powerful Chinese triads?--are most interested in exposing the document and thus sustaining their lucrative Asian drug trade another century. However, Britain fears that revealing the covenant would strain already-delicate relations among the UK, China, and the U.S. This is pure espionage pulp from its far-fetched plot to its cut-out characters. Back in 1944, Lord Mountbatten succeeded in getting Mao Tse- tung's signature on a promise to extend the British lease on Hong Kong for another hundred years if Mao came to power in China. Now, with the months ticking down on the original lease, a race is on for the last surviving copy of the Chungking Covenant. Sound familiar? It's a virtual rehash of Higgins' last, Thunder Point (1993)--but don't tell that to stalwart, nondescript Brigadier Charles Ferguson or his dashing one-time IRA enemy and present right- hand man Sean Dillon, fresh from thwarting an assassination attempt against the American President in London. (This preliminary plot winds down so rapidly that you just know the assassins weren't really trying.) Now Ferguson and Dillon are detailed to retrieve the Chungking Covenant from among the personal effects of its late courier, Major Ian Campbell, so that the Prime Minister can burn it before it throws the Hong Kong political situation into chaos. Meantime, though, Palermo's capo di tutti capi, Don Giovanni (!), gets wind of the document and, determined to extend the season on the Mafia's Hong Kong resort interests, deputizes his polo-playing, construction mogul nephew Carl Morgan and Morgan's stepdaughter Asta to grab the Covenant before Her Majesty's authorities can destroy it. By the time Lady Katherine suddenly remembers what really happened to her brother's personal effects, the stage is set for one of Higgins' kitchen sink finales, with the principals scuba diving, stealing, kidnapping, parachuting, and assaulting their way into your hearts still again. Nowhere near the top of Higgins' form, but his hordes of devoted fans won't mind this dog-and-pony show one more time. Something new around every corner.

This book throws all sorts of surprises your way. Everything you've come to expect or think about the characters will all of a sudden change as their true personality is revealed. It's just full of surprises that keep you wanting more, even when nothing exciting is happening.
This book was particularly interesting because of the topic. With Hong Kong having been handed over just a little while back and me actually living there I thought it took on a different meaning. Now I wonder if something like this really happened, whether the Chungking Covenant actually existed and was found. Either way, it makes for a good read, especially on a lonely beach in Malaysia.
I agree with everyone else that has written reviews here, Dillon is a great character. He seems like the perfect secret agent, but he's also got a little bit of an evil past which helps make him the person he is. The way he and Asta relate really confuses me because when they are around each other they seem like they truly have a thing for each other, but when they go back to their homes their attitude completely changes. Asta is a great character too, mainly because of that side of her, the way she changes so quickly makes you unsure of her motives so that when they are revealed at the end it really surprises you.
All in all this a great book that I never expected to like. I had to pick out a book on China for english and this seemed like the one that would appeal the most to me.

A rattling good yarn!

In China, in 1944, in the waning days of WW2, a document was signed by Mao Tse Sung and witnessed by Lord Louis Nountbatten, on behalf of Winston Churchill. This document, the Chungking Covenant, guaranteed continued rights to the British to accupy Hong Kong for yet another 100 years. The plane on which Scottish Officer, Ian Campbell and the Covenant was flying, crashed but Campbell , barely alive, was rescued by his batman and returned to England, never to regain his wits.Fifty years later as the time approaches for the handover of Hong Kong to the Chinese, the now aged batman reveals the presence of the Covenant to be hidden somewhere in the grounds of Campbell's castle in the Highlands of Scotland and both British Intelligence forces and the Mafia, who hold huge interests in Hong Kong, are anxious to acquire the document. The Brits hire Sean Dillon, former IRA operative and general mercenary to many countries (but definitely an almost good guy) to act on their behalf and to vie with a mysterious American millionaire, to get the document. If you like action thrillers with plenty going on, you'll love this as I did...it would make a marvellous movie!

Near the conclusion of WWII the British and Chinese Communists have a meeting during which they signed a pact, called the Chungking Covenant, which would extend British rule over Hong Kong for 100 years, provided the Communists were in control of China at wars end. The document is seemingly lost when the plane carrying it to England crashes. Fifty years later, news of the documents survival surfaces, when the surviving pilot of the plane advises a Mafia connected doctor of its existance. The Mafia, of course, would make multi-millions if they could get their hands on the document.

Here again, our two favorites, Sean Dillon and Brigadier Ferguson, match wits with a coterie of espionage agents, such as Carl Mason and his step-sister Asta, who portrays herself as a sweet and loving woman, but who, in reality is just the opposite...a true vixen. The characters and the plot are both well developed and hold your interest throughout the whole story.

Good read, needs to focus more on the main pair.

At the tender age of fifteen, Irene Stenson's world changed over night. Irene's summer night had been spent with her friend, Pamela Webb, who is U.S. Senator Ryland Webb's wild daughter. Pamela dropped Irene off on that fateful night. Irene entered her dark house to find her parents' bodies in the kitchen. It was labeled a murder-suicide and the case was quickly closed. Irene left the town of Dunsley with a relative, hoping never to return. She could never bring herself to believe that her father, Dunsley's Chief of Police, would murder his wife and then turn the gun upon himself.

It is a little over fifteen years later that Irene is contacted by Pamela via email. Irene is now a reporter for the Glaston Cove Beacon, a small town newspaper. The email message is coded and sounds desperate. Pamela insists that they meet in Dunsley and that the night Irene's parents died is involved. Like it or not, Irene must face the house of blood and darkness that has haunted her dreams for years.

Luke Danner may be out of the Corps, but his mind set is still that of a Marine. Luke saw too much during the last two years of duty and his family fears for Luke's sanity. To get away from everyone and think in solitude, Luke purchased the lodge cabins near the lake in Dunsley and rents them out. There is not much business during this time of year, but he has one tenant, Irene Stenson. To Luke, information and clues are like dots; and he enjoys connecting dots. One thing is for sure, the lady in cabin number five has a lot of dots around her. Being the Marine that he is, Luke barrels his way into her problems and begins connecting some seriously dangerous dots. Luke is with her when Irene finds Pamela's body. It looks like she overdosed on booze and pills, but those dots just do not connect. They connect even less so when Pamela's house is torched shortly afterward. No one in town in talking either. Irene may be from an old town family, but everyone in town is too scared of Senator Webb. Irene and Luke are on their own!

**** There is not enough focus on the two main characters. Even though the author supposedly still writes Contemporary Suspense, she seems to be leaving it for regular fictional stories, much to her fans' disappointments. This story is very good. The plot is sound. However, I did not REALLY come to care for Luke or Irene until a humorous family intervention breakfast, well past the half way point of the novel. From there on, the two main characters clicked beautifully! There are two other ex-Marines in the story. One is in town, the other is a corporate investigator. I have high hopes that Ken Tanaka, the investigator, will get his own story told in a future novel. All-in-all, this is not as good as her older tales, but it is a very good story that will please Krentz's fans. Recommended. ****

Irene Stenson was only fifteen when fate changed her life forever. It was that night that she discovered her parents dead in the family kitchen. Ever since that night Irene has been plagued with fear of the dark having to sleep with lights on. Seventeen years later Irene is forced to face the past all over again when her childhood friend, Pamela, contacts her. Pamela is desperate to talk with Irene, but insists that it has to be in Dunsley, the town she used to live in as a child. Pamela tells her she has to talk to her about the night her parents died. Irene is apprehensive about going back, but knows she has to find out what Pamela knows.

When Irene arrives in Dunsley, she rents a cabin from Luke Danner. Luke may have left the marines, but it is true what they say about once a marine always a marine. He immediately can tell that Irene is troubled after he witnesses her fear of the dark, and appoints himself her protector. As determined Luke is to keep her out of trouble, he is with Irene when they discover Pamela's body. It is apparently a suicide, but neither believe that story especially when her house is burned to the ground shortly after. When they start to dig, it is revealed that Irene's parents may have been murdered like she has suspected for years. Irene and Luke must solve these questionable deaths, or they may not survive to have a future together.

I liked both characters Irene and Luke. They play well off each other, and I was rooting for them to solve this mystery.

So when a dead Russian shows up on the docks in Duluth, Lucas is assigned to shepherd the lady investigator, Nadya Kalin, being sent by the Russian government. From the very first pages, the reader knows it's teenager Carl Walther who has killed the Russian. What makes the book intriguing is the manner in which the sagacious Davenport goes about uncovering the rest of the co-conspirators-a gang of Minnesota-based Communist spies headed by Carl's grandpa, 92-year-old ex-KGB colonel Burt Walther. That Sandford makes this unlikely plot believable is a mark of his mastery of the technical aspects of the mystery form and a testament to his overall writing skills. Readers will be pleased with this relaxed version of the moody Minneapolis investigator. In past novels, the womanizing Davenport would have romanced the good-looking Russian lady, but the new Davenport is content to play the part of friend and protector and go back to his cozy family with an unstained and remarkably contented soul.

A Russian sailor is the victim of a professional assassination on the docks of Duluth. Wary of international implications, the governor of Minnesota asks Lucas Davenport, the chief investigator for the state's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, to investigate. Major Nadezhda Kalin, a representative of Russian law enforcement, assists Davenport. The murder may be linked to the remnants of a dormant Soviet Union network established between the world wars but forgotten by the motherland. The descendants of the original network members have all melded into the American mainstream. Davenport and Kalin pursue the case through the rural mining towns of northern Minnesota even as they become the targets of the shadowy assassin. The sixteenth Prey novel is less harrowing and not as dark as many of its predecessors. It's also more humorous--even the suicide of a key character is accompanied by a sly, graveyard one-liner--with deft Davenport observations on the curious behavior of the opposite sex in general and on Russian women in particular. Similarities to previous Prey thrillers: high entertainment value; deftly rendered characterizations; and clever, believable dialogue. Expect another best-seller and stock up accordingly. THIS PREY IS WELL HIDDEN

This is a very unusual novel.

It starts with a drunken female tramp named Trey, in Duluth, Minnesota, who is shot at by a young man. The shot missed, and she ran. He followed her, shot at her again, but the gun was out of ammo.

She pulled out a switchblade knife, and went after him, and slashed his arm.

He backed away, saying that he would come back and get her, then walked away, into the darkness, and disappeared.

The novel ends, with Lucas Davenport and Lt. Colonel Nadya Kalin, of the Russian Intelligence Service, catching an undercover ring of Russian spies, that was obtaining American secrets for transmission, through the Russian Embassy, to Russia.

Despite a few detrimental aspects, such as extended descriptions of meaningless activities and events, this is still an exciting novel to read.

Hidden Prey is another jewel in the long list of John Sandford thrillers. This one brings us back to hidden cells of communists living and working among us. Remnants of the Cold War that never were recalled or turned off with undying loyalty to Mother Russia. Mysterious murders get Lucas involved and the twists and turns will keep you turning the pages well beyond bed time.

Another gem.

Can't say it too many times- Sandford's Davenport character is the best. Complex, hard but sensitive, intelligent- argues with himself about moral dilemmas. Love the development of this character throughout the series. And the story was exciting. Don't want to leave that out.

Swim lit

There's something elusive, unsatisfying about this book - it doesn't have the absolutely lovely finality of Roger Deakin's Waterlog for instance - but that feeling of lack, of something missing is also what the book is about. Much recommended, though I regretted buying the book on Kindle - there are a lot of images that really don't translate to the small black-and-white screen.

Water and Watercolors

"Swimming Studies" is Shapton's memoir of her life as young swimmer training for Olympic trials, her continued fascination with water and bodies in water, and her eventual turn toward art. She's brave and honest, and her descriptions transport - you feel the squeeze of a bathing cap, the atmosphere in a bus full of young athletes on their way to a competition, the chlorinated air of swimming pools, her elation, and her exhaustion.

Her book isn't a sport memoir so much as a meditation on her journey (often a watery one), as Shapton figures out how her former swimming life inspires her life as an artist. I came to this book not as a swimmer, but as an artist, and it resonated when Shapton quoted "The Nuts and Bolts of Psychology for Swimmers," by Keith Bell. He writes about training discipline, the nonnegotiable commitment to practice. Words that apply equally to working on a creative project, once you have set a goal: "It doesn't make much sense to have to decide whether to take each individual step in a trip you have already decided to make."

I love Shapton's watercolor portraits of fellow swimmers, rectangles of pool water, and gallery of vintage swimsuits - in both digital and paper forms (our family ended up with both versions, and it was fun to compare the illustrations) - the book is a treasure!

Swimming Studies

After hearing the author interviewed on NPR, I bought the book, which is beautifully designed, and read it in close to one sitting. I found it disjointed, sometimes boring and confusing and a rather frustrating read as this collage of a book ultimately doesn't really give a deep sense of the author, or what her point is aside from her frustration, attraction and ambivalence toward swimming and pools. I don't know quite what to make of this book or the author, but there were moments where her reflections and thoughts resonated with me more deeply.... then these ruminations were lost among the nonlinear format of the memoir. I did love the artwork scattered throughout but wanted ultimately to feel the depth of her relationship with swimming and art. Unfortunately this memoir left me feeling she had only touched the surface of things.

Couldn't put it down..should have dropped it

I read it in almost 12 hours. I was so pumped for it. I am an avid devotee of Presidential Series. My opinion? GREAT LET DOWN! For instance, I enjoyed the different stages of drama 1) Possible presidential meltdown of an incompetent CIC 2) Possible retailiation by Putin 3) Drug war influence with introducing a new ally for Castillo 4) But what was delivered by Father and Son was good background intrigue but no follow-up on anything dramatic. Too many open ended questions. For instance, 1) It was implied that Montvale may be involved in the coup d'etat but nothing explored. 2) So much was written about the transfer of Ferris that hardly anything was mentioned on his plight or what was happening behind the scenes that led up to the next to last chapter! Only 1 chapter on the planning and execution of the extraction? 3) No other mention on what Abrego's people were doing or planning or how that played out. That was disappointing. 4) It appeared the rest of Castillo's men or "the Other People" took a break from this book. I don't know why the author's did that especially after the confrontation in the beginning of the book 5) Castillo and Sweaty are going to be parents? That got 2 sentences and nothing else was mentioned. 6) There was also an implication that Abuela's involvement may be the heaviest since the series started but nothing afterwards. 7) There was mention of Naylor and McNab maybe playing a role in making things right, but that was another let down. 8) I'm not sure what side of the fence Montavle, Lammelle, and Cohen are on now. Based on the last book, Lammelle and Montavle owe Castillo and the gang for being in the positions they're in but I'm not sure whose side they're on now. Usually, Natalie Cohen knows everything but she was unusually out-of-the-loop until she and Charley talked. But nothing led up to her being untrustworthy. In closing, I am very disappointed in ending of book. There wasn't the usual excitement in the planning and execution of the mission. Thumbs down.

Disappointed - but tolerant

I have read Mr. Griffin for more than 25 years and love his work. The Brotherhood of War is clearly his finest work and what I cut my teeth on. Honor Bound was a delight until the last few - but tolerable. It may be reader loyalty, I just don't know - the characters in his novels are old friends I visit frequently. Charley and his Merry Band are fun to read and at least this installment reduces covering old history (except in the last 10% (!) - that was irritating). I will stick with him but he needs to go to his roots and pound out good, reinforced, storytelling that I am used to.
I will keep getting his (and his son's) books - just to see how the old friends are doing. I miss the Old School Griffin. This story would have been 100% better if he had just done what put him in the niche.

Covert Warriors

Prefacing this with the fact that I have read every Griffin book published in all his series, the last few books in this series have fallen off the Griffin style of character/plot development and readability. It seems the author or his publisher have turned to getting as much cash out of the name as possible while farming the book writing out to another writer with an elementary school education and no knowledge of the subject at hand. Too many pages are devoted to rehashing previous books/chapters/character history, ad nauseam, and a total lack of plot development are the norm now. A complete lack of regard is given to Mr. Griffin's history.
