From his nursing home in South Dakota, 96-year-old Guy Dull Knife Sr., the oldest surviving member of the Dull Knife family to be profiled in this fascinating Sioux (also known as Lakota) history, says, "I was born in 1899 in a log house, but my father was born in a tipi.... The tipi was in the shape of a circle and in the middle of the tipi there was always a campfire. This, too, was in the shape of a circle. In the summers, when the Sioux from all over the Dakotas, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana would gather for the Sun Dance, the tipis in the villages would always be arranged in a circle. The circle was our symbol. It was a holy symbol that helped to remind us that we were connected to everything else." In the tradition of Native American storytelling, many of the tales in this five-generation odyssey have been passed down from father to son through word of mouth. Joe Starita, an award-winning investigative journalist, fills in the gaps with more than a century's worth of family documents and archival historical material.

In the latter part of the 19th century, Chief Dull Knife led his followers through some of the most brutal and ruthless battles between the white man and the Indians. From his nursing home, George's son, Guy Dull Knife Sr., the sole living Sioux World War I veteran, retells the tales of his youth and family history in his native Lakota tongue. Much of the proud and painful history of Native Americans involves Lakota chiefs like Red Cloud and Crazy Horse, and conflicts in both the distant and recent past at Wounded Knee. Former Miami Herald reporter Starita sensitively illuminates Lakota history through one remarkable family. Dominating the book is patriarch Guy Dull Knife Sr., born in 1899 and revered as the oldest living member of his people. Guy's forebears endured displacement, government deception and war; once enclosed on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, they endured the suppression of their language, culture and religion. Guy's relatives told him of the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre; his father toured Europe with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show, removed from his people's problems. This history of a Lakota family spans four generations, beginning with Lakota chief Dull Knife, whose grandson, Guy Dull Knife Sr., born in 1899, is still alive. The family story is meant to serve as a vehicle for the story of the Lakota in general, from their contact and intense conflict with whites, through their years of oppression under the reservation system, and into the modern era of uneasy assimilation. This admirable attempt offers much wonderful material, but the approach is lacking in narrative strength. Starita attempts to use Guy Dull Knife Sr., referred to throughout the book?somewhat disconcertingly during the account of his youth?as "the old man," as an anchor, but the effect is jarring. I have read countless family sagas and this is one of the best! I am surprised this novel did not receive more credit. Also liked the vintage photos and quotes.
It begins with Chief Dull Knife, legendary leader of the northern Cheyenne, and tells of his time during the 600 mile Cheyenne Long Walk which absolutely brought me to tears. This section covers many of the Cheyenne and Lakota battles as well as Custer and Fetterman, and on into Wounded Knee. There are intriguing stories about Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and many others.
The saga also covers Dull Knife's children and grandchildren who settled on the Pine Ridge rez or Lakota nation. George Dull Knife toured Europe with Buffalo Bill Cody and I loved the funny tales; the Sioux ride their first and last carnival ride, one warrior battles an ape, and the Lakota bet a buffalo can whip a royal bull. On the more serious side you learn the cruel truth about civilization; Indian schools, allotments, and how terrible life was and still is on the Pine Ridge Indian Rez.
Many of Dull Knife's grandchildren served in American wars such a World War 1 and Vietnam; the stories revealed here are interesting and it is sad many Native American war tales are overlooked in schools, books, and movies.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in history, Cheyenne and Lakota life, and family sagas. I found myself laughing at some of the stories but crying through many parts. The author really brought to life the hard ships the Cheyenne and Lakota faced but also the valiant pride these people long forgotten by many honored. It is really hard for someone now-a-days to understand and sad because pride is a thing of the past. Reading his work I could almost see brave warriors taking bullets so that their starving women and children might escape the soldier's cruelty.

Being a Lakota

I would never have read this book had I not been assigned a project dealing with Chief Dull Knife's death march from Indian Territory. I picked it up and got plenty of information about that historical event. Reading on, I discovered a great deal more.
In addition to tracing four generations of Dull Knifes, this book is one of the most comprehensive and attractive histories of the Lakota people ever. It covers almost everything -from the battle of the Little Big Horn to the upsurge of Indian pride following the siege of Wounded Knee. Though I had read bits and pieces about them before, I was able to form a more integrated picture of the Sioux after reading this book. Often suppressed and today among the poorest groups in America, the Lakotas have held onto and passed down the beauty and resilience of their culture- like the Dull Knife who wore a medicine bundle into Vietnam and Sioux women favoring herbs and blossoms over shampoo. This spirit even shows in the narrative's fresh, confident feel.
The book also offers a glimpse at the personality of Dewey Beard, the last survivor of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, who died in 1959 and was a friend of the Dull Knife family.

Reads like a lead brick!

All three novels are wonderful. They are real page turners, and I would definitely recommend reading them all. However, combining three novels into one hardback book is a BAD idea, despite the great price. The book weighs a ton, and it is cumbersome to read and carry around with you.

Tepid at best

Once upon a time, Stuart Woods could put together a readable, if lightweight story, just something adequate to pass the time with. Maybe a flght or a lazy day on the beach. Not any more. His last few Stone Barrington novels have been unbearable for me and now Woods destroys his Ed Eagle character.

I don't like divulging a lot of the plot of any book because someone else might find "Santa Fe Dead" enjoyable and I don't want to ruin for them.

To make a long story short, Ed Eagle is supposedly the top trial attorney in New Mexico. The story opens as a continuation of the last Eagle book, where his wife took off with some of his money and ultimately tried to kill him. Now she is on trial for the murder of two strangers she mistook for Eagle and his girlfriend. Barbara Eagle escapes from the courthouse in a scene that, like so many others in the book, is simply unbelievable under any circumstances. The trial narrative, what little there is, is also unbelievable as is the jury acquitting her. There is, in fact, nothing believable in the entire book. Not a single bit of the plot; not a single character.

The book is filled with gratuitous sex scenes that serve no purpose except perhaps to titillate any teenage boys who might pick the book up - which wouldn't be a wise idea because, as in the Stone Barrington series, all the characters are never more than a few paragraphs away from consuming still more alcohol.

Eagle is just so well connected. For example, though he lives in New Mexico, he has a concealed carry permit for California. The LA chief of police is his pal, which helps Woods avoid the burden of actually creating a story. Every time Eagle needs something, he just calls his pal, the chief or some other soul. Eagle never does anything - and Woods never has to actually resort to inventiveness.

Eagle's girlfriend isn't even well developed enough to be a stereotype, much less a character. But she does manage to kill a couple of people with absolutely no troublesome involvement with the law.

Eagle flies about in his airplane, which helps avoid all kinds of plot complications and little things like toting guns from place to place.

As soon as Eagle's ex-wife goes on the lam, a lawyer gets charges for escaping lifted. And the former Mrs. Eagle meets a newly minted billionaire. Within days, she marries him, but continues on her murderous ways. Yeah, truly believable.

In the meantime, Woods introduces what at first appears to be an unrelated sub-plot when a movie producer phones Eagle from Rome with a story that his wife and stepson may have been kidnapped. The guy doesn't call the police, he calls Eagle, a total stranger. Eagle finds that the wife and stepson have been murdered and is now the lawyer for Don Wells, a husband and father who doesn't appear to grieve over his loss. Perhaps it is because his dead wife is a centi-millionaire by inheritance and he stands to get it all?

Woods is a decent writer and he turns out good, if often hacknyed, dialog. But the editing is awful in this book. In the first few pages, there were errors from the merely sloppy ("lead" for "led") to the ridiculous: one of the innumerable drinks consumed starts off as bourbon, becomes scotch and than transformed into bourbon again. Later in the book, you can see where Woods or his supposed editor became so sloppy that an even that occurred two pages earlier is denied, like it never happened.

There is no real story here. Every thing is patched together by the merest coincidence instead of being the product of actual plotting and story development. There is no suspense and the characters are totally unbelievable.

As I said, Woods does write well, so if you are facing a long flight or are trapped in an airport waiting for a delayed flight or simply want to kiss a few hours goodbye forever, it is possible that you might enjoy "Santa Fe Dead". I read every page myself, more in awe of how low Woods had sunk, rather than the quality of the story.

Reviewing: Santa Fe Dead

"Santa Fe Dead" could easily have been named "The Boring Return of the Evil B-word Barbara." That might have been more honest and would have better reflected the disappointingly weak quality of Stuart Wood's latest effort. It would have also worked naming it "Santa Fe STUPID."

It is time once again to hang out with Ed Eagle, Santa Fe lawyer and all around older stud. Someday, we may finally find out that Ed Eagle is actually Stone Barrington's father as they seem to share the same concepts about the law, making money, bedding beautiful women, etc. When Ed Eagle isn't romping in bed with the gorgeous actress Susannah Wilde (yes, he romps by his own admission and does it very well with no unsatisfied customers or golden arches), or wheeling and dealing, is testifying in court about how his ex-wife Barbara tried to take his money, kill Ed's private investigators, have Ed killed, and generally cause mayhem in both Mexico and the U. S. Despite his testimony, as well as the fact that she flees the courthouse while the jury is deliberating her verdict, the jury in San Diego, California finds her not guilty.

Barbara begins to set her sights on the next husband to be whose biggest asset is his money while Ed Eagle begins to try to move on with his life. Part of his stated attempt to move on is to warn the next husband to be that Barbara is evil. That doesn't help create separation, closure, or whatever the shrinks call it this week and before long Barbara is mad as a hatter and going after him everyway possible. That is fine with Ed because he isn't through with her either.

Featuring stereotypical characters, gratuitous sex scenes inserted for no plot reason whatsoever, and plenty of action as well as references to money and designer goods, this is an incredible weak read. Barbara is the complete evil B word, Ed is an unflappable stud, and the bad guys are amazingly stupid. Finding good help is hard to do and in this case one really wonders how the bad guys lived long enough to be the stupid help in this novel. Apparently, they never were forced to get out of wet paper bags at any time of their lives and therefore have managed to live long enough to get here where they can fly planes and do all sorts of things but can't kill worth anything and leave clues behind that a sixth grader wouldn't. The result is a book typical of Wood's write it fast and sell it philosophy of the last few years and on that many of his fans will mindlessly continue to snap up and enjoy.

Ed Eagle Returns In Lukewarm Thriller

When we last saw Santa Fe Lawyer Ed Eagle (Short Straw, 2006) he was finally rid of his insane wife, Barbara. Now, this book picks up a year later. Ed has just been a witness in the trial against his ex and is awaiting the verdict. Barbara, fearing she will be found guilty, slips out a window and escapes (as strangely unplausible that is, but I'll go with it). This of course disturbs Ed, as she has tried to kill him before.

So begins a book of backstabbing and cat & mouse antics. Barbara remarries and uncannily her new husband dies (natural causes). Meanwhile, Ed takes a strange case where his clients family has been murdered. The man calls him on the phone to tell him about a ransom. Not the police, Ed.

Everything leads back to L.A. where we once again get the backdrop of Centurion Studios. With some interesting twists and turns right to the end, this isn't Woods' best effort but it is a non-stop thrill ride from the beginning.

A Dream Come True

You keep hoping you'll find a book that'll draw you in, enchant you, keep you enthralled until you finish the last word. This is that book. I'm not normally a fan of speculative fiction (or whatever they're calling scifi these days) but this book seduced me. I ached for the characters, believed every minute, couldn't wait to see how it turned out. This is a writer in control. I'm in awe. And can't wait to read her next book!

I loved this book. It really draws you in in this wonderful and mystical mood that Fowler creates. I thought the development of the character throughout the book was enchanting and endearing. I was so sad when it was over, I loved reading it so much!

This is a very light, though highly readable, novel. Recommended for popular fiction collections.

How can the author of a bombshell like 1970's Love Story follow up with such a long succession of dramatic duds (Prizes, 1995, etc.)? Readers are likely to occupy their minds with this question while leafing through the forgettable life and loves of Dr. Matthew Hiller, genetic engineer extraordinaire. With an alcoholic lit-professor father and a workaholic mother, young Matthew knew he was blessed to possess a talent as a pianist strong enough that one day it will carry him away from Dearborn, Michigan, forever. In college, he majors in music but also pursues an interest in medicine while carrying on a benign but creative friendship with a pretty cellist named Evie. After graduation, Evie marries her master-class instructor, and Matthew opts for med school, following up with a stint tending victims of Ethiopia's famine. There, he meets and falls hard for fellow doctor Silvia Dalessandro, an Italian super-heiress using this altruistic jaunt to escape a scheduled marriage to wealthy family friend Nico Rinaldi. Matthew and Silvia shack up together, but when Matthew is nearly killed by natives, Silvia agrees to marry Nico right away if he'll airlift Matthew to a Swiss hospital. Thus Matthew hangs on to his life but loses Silvia and--he realizes soon enough--his ability to play the piano. Heartbroken, he buries himself in research studies at Harvard, soon becoming the world's expert at destroying brain tumors through genetic engineering. Powerful and captivating!

I have only read Love Story and after reading Only Love and becoming familiar with Seagal's other books I am looking forward to purchasing more of his books. This latest novel is a must-read. Much of the emotions felt by the main character were dramatic and honest. I felt as though I was experiencing the story myself. Seagal has the skill to put into words what many feel, but are unable to express into words or are unable to recognize. Many times one sentence alone captured a human's scale of emotions hitting it right on the head of the nail...True revelations of the inner-heart and thoughts of love and relationships. I loved it! I thought it wouldn't compare to Love Story and now I don't know which is better.

This book has a very intriguing story line!

I really enjoyed this book, and even though the prologue pretty much tells you the outcome, the story was quite enjoyable! I have not read one of his books in quite a while, and I will definitely seek out some of his older ones, and read the ones I have missed. I was really rooting for Evie in this one, even though at the same time you want Silvia and Matt, to get back together somehow! Evie and Matt had their amazing musical bond, that was very special, and you wanted them to go back to their duets, that made them so happy!

Fast-Paced/Engaging Narrative of Loves Lost and Found

This work is the first book that I have picked up, and been constantly unable to put down. It is an outstanding tale, well written if perhaps a bit "wordy" at times, and a bit unsentimental at the most poignant moments. All in all, a good work worthy of reading, and one that seems to "stick" in the mind well after the book is finished. One cares about the characters, gets to know them and like them. However, the most touching scenes and most emotional moments seem to gloss over a bit, and a bit more detail would add to the emotional impact for the reader.

I know we don't know each other very well, and you're thinking: "Who does this guy think he is to tell me what books to buy?". And I really don't mean to be presumptuous, but I'd like to kick-off our relationship by doing you a tremendous favor and recommending to you a book you will not forget - The Book of (Even More) AWESOME.

You see, I've been following along with the AWESOME movement for some time now, when I first discovered the award winning blog over at 1000awesomethings.com. This is where Neil Pasricha kicked things off, posting an awesome thing every weekday. It wasn't long before I found myself checking in every day to have a big smile spread across my face while I read about the pleasures of sleeping in new bed sheets, getting a prime seat at the movie theatre or hitting a bunch of green lights in a row when you're late for work. I must not have been the only one enjoying reading about life's little pleasures because before long, the site was winning awards, increasing in popularity and releasing a book - the best-selling "The Book of AWESOME" - that is filled with more of Neil's beautiful writing, keen eye for life's happy little moments and tremendous sense of humor.

So, you can imagine the smile I had on my face when I got home from work today to my pre-ordered copy of this new book - another fantastic collection of moments in life guaranteed to make you smile.

Now that we're starting to get to know each other better, let me share an embarrassing fact with you.. I've been stuck at this point in the review for the last 20 minutes. I keep picking up the book to highlight a few of my favorite awesome things, but each time I pick one I want to mention (picking the fastest line at the grocery store), I read the whole post, and turn the page - just to see what the next one is going to be (getting a hug from someone you didn't know you were in a hug relationship with). So I end up reading that post, smiling some more. Lather, rinse and repeat.

Well, this is making for a great evening of reading, but a pretty terrible job of writing a quick and efficient review. But that's the thing about Neil's writing - it sucks you in. One page will turn into five which will turn into half the book.

And while I'm warning you of some things (because at this point, we're looking out for each other, right?), I should definitely mention that it's contagious. You won't be able to read this book without starting to see your own awesome moments all around you. Whether it's recognizing one of the awesome things from the book during a rough day and it picks you right up (like when someone saves you a seat!) or coming up with your own moments, you start to realize just how much AWESOME there is out there.

Be honest with me? How many books have you read that have truly changed your perspective on things? Not by TELLING you.. this isn't some schmaltzy self-help book telling you how to live your life.. no.. by SHOWING you all the wonderful little things in the world that are easily taken for granted, but should be recognized and celebrated. Like when you pack your dishwasher PERFECTLY full, or the sudden silence when you drive from a rough road onto a smooth one.

The last thing I'll mention is that the awesome things are so incredibly universal. Not only do I think "Yes! Exactly!" whenever I'm reading it, but I want to share it with others - so I inevitably end up dialing up a friend, and reading a few posts to, sharing laughs about how applicable these are to our own shared memories. And before long, I'm ordering extra copies for my friends and family, just to see the inevitable smiles that cross their faces the minute the start paging through the book. It is guaranteed to happen - try it yourself!

Ok - I won't keep you any longer. But do yourself a favor and get a copy of this book - you will LOVE it! And then come back here and share some of your thoughts and awesome things with the rest of us. I mean, at this point we're all friends, right?

Simply Put? The Book Title Speaks for Itself

The Book of (Even More) Awesome, the follow-up book to Neil Pasricha's original literary masterpiece that has rightfully claimed a spot on bestseller lists for 50+ weeks (The Book of Awesome), is certainly the must-have volume two for anyone who owns the first book. After winning an online contest and receiving a galley copy of The Book of (Even More) Awesome in the mail about a month ago, I have been thinking of what I would say in this review in order to do the book justice.

Pasricha jumps right in with an eloquent and eye-opening introduction that lightly touches on his own personal and harrowing life experiences: loneliness, a broken marriage, and a close friend who fell victim to suicide. The message is clear without being preachy or overly-optimistic: when faced with the bad news, pain, and heartbreak that many of us experience on a daily basis, we have the choice to observe and enjoy small moments in life, allowing them to improve our frames of mind - even if only for a bit, or we have the choice to continue to "swirl in gloomy darkness forever".

And that's just the introduction.

The remaining pages are not filled with any kind of typical self-help advice, philosophical reflections, or mundane clichés about how we can turn our lives around and begin to see the glass half full. Rather, readers are treated to well-written and hilarious anecdotal observations and personal stories that illustrate tiny moments of joy that each of us has no doubt experienced.

As I read my awesomely-acquired advance copy, there was a constant recurring thought: "Yes! Exactly!" Pasricha truly has a way with words that uncannily captures readers' exact emotional responses on topics ranging from:

* the kid's table at holidays
* dropping your cellphone and realizing it survived the fall
* going on a field trip in elementary school
* when someone saves you a seat: "... They're expressing your friendship to the world by deciding twenty minutes of stinkeye is worth making sure you sit together ... AWESOME!"
* fitting every last thing in the dishwasher
* taking a break from shaving
* the moment of anticipation before a first kiss
* when your roommate cleans while you're away
* going to the gym yesterday: " ... Because now you can take a break today. AWESOME!"

This book is for anyone who has ever experienced a high or low in life. Yes -- it is perfect for literally everyone. Readers old and young alike will find themselves relating to the myriad of awesome things covered in The Book of (Even More) Awesome. I speak from personal experience in that Pasricha's books are the most-appreciated and well-liked gifts I've ever given. Who doesn't love something that feels like it was written with them in mind?
