A 1985 hijacking of gold bullion, masterminded by Irish Protestant terrorist Michael Ryan, ends with the ship that's carrying the booty sinking off Ireland. Ryan and his niece Kathleen flee to America while their presumed henchman, seemingly a sailor but actually a disguised Dillon, then an IRA enforcer, ostensibly returns to sea. Ten years later, Ryan is sprung from an American medical prison by a Mafia lawyer intent on retrieving the bullion. Soon the gold is the object of desire of the mob, a retired IRA chief of staff and British Intelligence, for whom Dillon now works. The cheeky, pint-sized Dillon tends toward occasional stage Irishness, and the other characterizations aren't much deeper, but readers riveted by Higgins's mastery of plot and pace won't mind at all. The fifth Sean Dillon adventure (the last was Angel of Death, LJ 3/1/95) finds the former terrorist involved with a group of Irish Protestant paramilitaries in 1985 as they hijack a truck carrying #100 million in gold bullion. Ten years later, Sean is working for British Intelligence when he is ordered to go after the gold again. Now he is to prevent the bullion from disrupting the peace between the Catholics and Protestants. Dillon, boss Brigadier Ferguson, and partner Hannah Bernstein must also deal with the Mafia. They ask 85-year-old Liam Devlin for help, and the IRA legend of past Higgins books is only too pleased to participate. The excitement never lags as each side double-crosses the others. Sean is too perfect, however, and the surprise ending is not a surprise. Even so, it is fun getting there. Recommended for popular collections.

Old Fashion Yarn - we need more like it on the bookrack

Higgins has been around for so long and has developed an endearing style for spinning tales that can only hook the reader. The types of adventure stories he tells had gone out of style long ago. I lament the passing of those times. For that reason, I often find myself reading material from the 60's and 70's, transporting myself back to a time when geopolitics and detailed knowledge of technical hardware didn't gum down the pace of a good novel. It was a less informed time, but fun, non the less.
Drink with the Devil is a rare novel that transports me back but yet remains refreshingly contemporary! I think that's why I like it so much. Sean Dillon, Higgins's weathered hero, does all the time travelling for me. The novel opens with a gold heist gone awry a decade ago. Fast forward to today and a treasure hunt ensues throughout the rest of the novel.
Mafia, Ulstermen, angry IRA types, and many others find their way into the novel. Like most Higgins fare, the pace is very quick. All subplots, there aren't many, are attended to; Dillon sews up all loose ends, as he usually does.
A fine read. Or, a fine listen. Patrick McNee does the audio version. He relies on his cockney accent to bring realism to the text. Very enjoyable

This book is much deeper than you might think.

In 1985, IRA terrorist Sean Dillon is assigned to infiltrate a renegade Loyalist terrorist group led by Michael Ryan. Posing as a Protestant named Martin Keogh, Dillon saves Ryan's niece Kathleen from rape (and probably worse) at the hands of a group of Catholic thugs. Dillon joins Ryan in his plan to hijack a British armored car carrying 50 million pounds to fund Ryan's campaigns. The heist goes off successfully, but the captain of the boat ferrying them across the Irish Sea tries a double cross, and pays with his life. Dillon and the Ryans survive, with Michael maintaining an electronic device which will lead the user to the wreck and the money. Dillon has an opportunity to kill the Ryans and take the device, but (perhaps in his first pangs of conscience) chooses not to, and they go on their separate ways.
Ten years later, Michael and Kathleen Ryan have immigrated to the U.S., where Michael is imprisoned for shooting a police officer in a botched robbery. Michael's health is failing, so he is often transported from the prison to a nearby hospital for treatment. One of the henchmen of Mafia Don Antonio Russo gets wind that Ryan knows the location of (now) 100 million pounds sitting at the bottom of the Irish Sea. Russo confers with IRA chieftain Jack Barry (the man who assigned Dillon to infiltrate Ryan's group) and offers to split the booty. Russo will break Ryan out of prison in exchange for the location of the wreck. The Ryan's are thus forced into assisting the IRA and the mob.
Stalwart British Intelligence guru Brigadier Charles Ferguson gets wind of Ryan's resurfacing and sends Detective Chief-Inspector Hannah Bernstein and Dillon, who's now working for British Intelligence (read "Thunder Point" if you want to know why,) after the gold, to stop it from falling into the hands of either the IRA, the mob, or the Ryans.
Another Dillon classic, with the added bonus of shedding some light on what Dillon did when he was with the IRA. Kathleen Ryan is easily the most compelling character in the book. At the end of the book, when you find out what has happened to her in her short life, it makes her actions that much more tragic and also much more understandable. I defy you not to feel for her when her trauma is finally revealed. One wonders how many real Kathleen Ryans there are in Northern Ireland today, both Protestant and Catholic, and if they'll ever manage to find peace.
If you like Higgins, and especially Dillon, buy this book. But it's a lot deeper, and raises a lot more questions, than most people are willing to admit.

this is a very old book but it is fantastic.

I owned this once before.. Of course the future history that the Tomorrow File suggests has not yet come to pass but a dominant US government controlling every aspect of American society is not yet out of the question. it is well written and has enough twists and turns to continue to be interesting. Many of the relatively minor matters are wrong (e.g., the US taking in foreign countries as States).
I have not yet read the rest of the book .

Always been a fan and am rereading his stuff which is why I bought this book. The Tomorrow File is old but accurate in terms of sci-fi and is one of the few sci-fi books I've enjoyed.

Matt's book is ideal for someone ready to embark on a journey traveling. I bought the E-version before I traveled for three months last summer. I read it in a day; its an easy read. I found the content very interesting, given that it was my first huge travel and I had no idea what to expect. He gives any novice the perspective that one should have before beginning travel - and even before planning the travel. I wish it was the first travel book I read, but I had already read Rick Stevens and Lonely Planet books, filling my head with what's "possible" rather than what's likely, given my conservative budget. For example, Matt will tell you about hostels and enjoying yourself, while the other books I read where more catered towards a crowd with money to blow and touristy sites on their minds.

After a few weeks of traveling, I found myself referring back to this book for pointers (I had downloaded it on my iPad).

He's helpful too. I had emailed him a travel question and he promptly and personally wrote me back.

I'll be buying the paperback simply to have it in my hands, so I can be old-school like that. Lol.

Well written collection of tips

I've been to 25 countries over the past 10 years, and have put a lot of effort into research and saving money. Despite that, I found some useful tips in his books that I hadn't heard of at all before. Definitely worth the investment.

Perhaps you can find all these tips by scouring the internet, but is the 20 hours you spend doing that worth the $10 you saved? I doubt it. Buy the book, you won't regret it.

Great tips, a breeze to read, well worth the $10

This book has heaps of tips and information on the what, where and how of travelling. Whether you're looking to travel long-term (like myself) or just going on a holiday, you'll be able to extract tips that save you money and a headache.
Some tips, like using credit cards to rack up airline miles, are great but not applicable to everyone... THAT'S OK! There are tips in this book that will help you.
He also does a great job of outlining different (popular) regions and showing you how to navigate them and get the most out of your stay there.
It was well worth the $10 kindle purchase- I probably would have paid double for it... but that would have taken away from Matt's sound advice of not being frivolous when trying to save for a trip. :)

About the Author
William C. Dietz is the bestselling author of more than thirty novels, some of which have been translated into German, Russian, and Japanese. He grew up in the Seattle area, served as a medic with the Navy and Marine Corps, graduated from the University of Washington, and has been employed as a surgical technician, college instructor, and television news writer, director, and producer. Prior to becoming a full-time writer, Dietz served as director of public relations and marketing for an international telephone company. He and his wife live near Gig Harbor, Washington.

Dietz could help to write Episodes 2 & 3

Great book, actually, a great trilogy, if you get the hardcover editions they also make a great display for any respectable collection. The writing is down to earth, yet descriptive and complete, leaves you wanting to know more, especially great is the step by step narration Dietz makes of the first Dark Forces level. The illustrations are great, but i found a couple of errors in this book: Acording to JK game, Kyle doesn't get his lightsaber until level three of the game, this book refers to Dark Forces, so why is he painted with a saber in the cover and other 2 illustrations? Also, when he meets Jan, the description tells us he's wearing a Stortrooper armor, yet in the drawing he's not...great book, nevertheless...

Not Just A Great Novel, But a Work of Art!

I'm a huge Star Wars fan and I love the Expanded Universe characters. I first met Kyle Katarn when I played the Playstation game Star Wars: Dark Forces. The game gave you bits and pieces about Katarn's life, but left you wanting to know more. So you can imagine how happy I was to discover that there was a series of novels based on the characters in the game.
Kyle Katarn is the son of a farmer / mechanic from a planet in the Outer Rim. His family is not rich and the only way that Kyle will be assured an excellent education is to join the Imperial Academy. Although he doesn't always agree with everything he has learned at the Academy, Kyle has become a loyal officer, willing to risk his life for the Empire. Shortly after graduating the Academy, Katarn learns that his beloved father has been murdered. As Kyle journeys to his homeworld, he makes an amazing discovery - his father was not killed by Rebel agents as he had been told. His father WAS a Rebel agent, killed by the Empire. Bent on avenging his father's death, Katarn joins the Rebel Alliance. HIs first mission, given to him by Mon Mothma herself, is a doozy - get hold of the plans to the Imperial battlestation being built in orbit around Despayre (the Death Star for all you non-Star Wars fanatics out there!)! Can Kyle complete the mission, or will he sell out the Rebellion? Mon Mothma can't be sure, so she sends an opreative to keep an eye on him - and dispose of him if he reveals himself to be a traitor!
This book is 126 pages packed with action, adventure and intrigue! Perfectly written by William Dietz, the story will definitely hold your attention. Not only do you get more insight into one of your favorite Expanded Universe characters, you are treated to some guest appearances from the trilogy, such as Mon Mothma and Lando Calrissian. I especially enjoyed the illustrations, which can only adequately be described as works of art, by Dean WIlliams. Soldier for the Empire is part one of a trilogy of Dark Forces novels. I've already read parts one and two, and can't wait to get my hands on the third! A treat for any Star Wars fan, whether you're a fan of the movies, books, or games!

Hey, It's Chris Elliott!

Borrowed a friends copy, so I have read it, and it's entertaining. If you listen to Carolla's Podcast (free Itunes) there is an interview with Chris on there about the book.

All in all being a fan of his since I was a teenager from my love of David Letterman I thoroughly enjoyed the embellished anecdotes from his days at Letterman.

What can I say, it's Chris Elliott. If you dig him, you'll dig the book. If you have no clue who he is, don't buy it.

Tall Tales Bathroom Reading

While eyeballing this brisk read, I was often reminded of the author's crisp and sassy comedic style. The book is basically his own Paul Bunyan self-mythologizing but coming from Chris Elliott it's impossible to imagine what he will come up with next except that it will be embarrassing or nonsensical or often both. Quintessential bathroom reading from an author who once played backgammon with Dolemite, or Dolemite's son's little league's umpire's brother.

Doesn't Meet The Sanders Standards

I am loathe to give a Lawrence Sanders book a mediocre review, but the truth is that THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT just doesn't meet the standard set by this prolific and gifted author during his best years. It's not a bad book, but for a guy who penned some of the best page-turners of the 70s and 80s, "not bad" is not good enough.

T8C is the story of a coin appraiser named Mary Lou Bateson ("Dunk" to her friends, because at 6'2" she's tall enough to go to the bucket), who becomes embroiled in numismatic version of locked-door mystery. A priceless coin entrusted to her care by the very rich, very troubled Havistock family disappears despite every security precaution, and largely to protect herself against suspicion she made off it with herself, she plays at amateur detective. This brings her into contact not only with the extended (and twisted) Havistock clan, but with two detectives who, already professional rivals, become rivals for her affection as well. Juggling the attentions of suave insurance investigator Jack Smack and the rumpled but loveable NYPD detective Al Gorgio, Dunk discovers she has a talent for detection herself, but her lack of experience (and frankly, common sense) puts her at risk of losing much more than her job, when her questions begin to annoy the wrong people.

To be sure, THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT has some things going for it. Lawrence Sanders, even when he was clearly uninterested in his story and probably racing to make a deadline, was one of the most gifted prose-writers of his or any other generation, with a special gift for turns of phrase, descriptions, and atmosphere, and he had a talent for making even his stock characters memorable (Al Georgio is as vivid in my mind's eye as if he were sitting next to me at this moment.) His preoccupation with food, drink, architecture, furniture, and objets d'art makes for sumptuous reading. An experienced mystery writer, he knows how to chuck out red herrings and drop hints that may or may not pan out. And he knows how to convey the sometimes frightening loneliness a person can feel living in the Big Apple alone.

Unfortunately, all of this is simply what I expect from the guy who wrote the DEADLY SIN series, THE ANDERSON TAPES, and such compulsively re-readable books as THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT. Maybe I'm judging him unfairly, but this book lacks that special something Sanders usually brings to the table. The first problem lies in the "a toi", the three-way romance between Dunk, Jack Slack, and Al Georgio. Having gone out of his way to tell us that Dunk (who narrates the story), is not only awkwardly tall, but plain of face and body, he then puts two extremely desirable men dueling for her affection. The reader naturally assumes one or both of them is using her to get information about the missing coin, but no, they really want her. This feels artificial, and so does Sanders' choice to give almost everyone in the book a preposterous name. Why he chose to do that I don't know -- maybe to add a comedic element, but it simply forces the reader out of suspension of disbelief and reminds him/her that he/she is reading a potboiler.
Sanders gift for character generation is largely absent from this book, and with the exception of Georgio and Archibald Havistock, most of the characters feel like stock right out of Central Casting. What's more, Dunk seems astonishingly dumb about her own safety and to top it off, the entire book turns on an utterly unbelievable decision she makes regarding a package entrusted to her by a character who is subsequently murdered. I just didn't believe Dunk would refuse to open it, and possibly solve the mystery (and save her own bacon), just because she promised the now-dead giver she wouldn't. It's a problem for the heroine that feels utterly contrived and forced. Finally, the book's ending, while probably realistic, is a total downer and not in keeping with the more-lighthearted-than-usual tone of this mystery.

Do not mistake me. I love Lawrence Sanders and would never bash him. But to say this book "OK" and nothing more is pretty much just calling it like I read it. Hard-core fans will of course want to give it a try, but those new to Sanders' work should pick something else in his repertoire.

Now on my favorite list!

This was the first book that I have read by Sanders, and I loved it. I finished it in one day. It was totally engrossing and I fell in love with his main character "Dunk". It has a fantastic plot. I just wish Dunk had made a better choice in men!

An Awesome Read!

I loved this book. This is the first novel I've read by Sanders and it's certainly not the last. The main character is immediatly likable and any twenty-something can relate to her. With strong integrety and a quirky sense of humor, she makes the book a breeze to read through. The mystery is fast paced and intrigues the reader with each new chapter. Nothing monumental or legendary about the writing. Just a straightforward, fast-paced mystery that will keep you company on a rainy day.

But the Hardy Boys are here, too, and Archie comics, as well as the Bobbsey Twins and Harold and the Purple Crayon. We are most susceptible to the impact of literature when we are in our 20s and younger, it seems, and several of the authors included here focus their attention on those early influences--how well they hold up over time.

Many of the book's contributors liken relationships with treasured books to those with loved ones. Some of Louis Begley's favorites (The Divine Comedy, Remembrance of Things Past), "like my children, are always on my mind." Mona Simpson warns that "we fall in with books the way we fall in with friends, irrationally, often permanently, not always wisely." The reading of some books, adds Guy Davenport, can even forge friendships: "A friendship lasting thirty years," he says, "began with the discovery at a dull luncheon that we had both read Hugh Miller."

Narrowing down one's favorite books to a mere half-dozen would daunt any reader, but it must be particularly arduous for those who eat and breathe books. While D.M. Thomas believes that "there are just a few books that, once you've read them, flow in your bloodstream," Neil Simon complains that "pin[ning] down the three or even six books that have left the greatest impression on me ... denies the four or five hundred great books that have imperceptibly changed my outlook on life." Some writers, says David Leavitt, "one thinks of as great but cannot love"; others "one loves but cannot think of as great." Remarkable front to back. I have loved books all my life, lectured and written about them throughout a long career, and reflected at length on the whole question of what the point of reading is anyway, and why anyone-on whatever path in life-would bother. I don't profress to be a reigning authority on books or on life; but as the end of my own life approaches, perhaps I'm qualified to shout from the rafters that those who think life too short or too full of more practical pursuits or interesting diversions-or think reading is a luxury too rich for their blood (or not rich enough)-have missed the point. No book I have ever read is more illustrative than For The Love of Books: 115 Celebrated Writers on the Books They Love Most. I'm grateful to Mr. Shwartz for having the temerity to conceive of this wonderfully engaging and seductive book and the enormous dedication to see it through. Yet for all the discipline, tact, and resourcefulness it obviously required, I suspect something even more precious at work here. I doubt that many of the world-class writers who agreed to take part would have given Shwartz the time of day had they not sensed in him, as I do, an exquisite literary intelligence of his own. Shwartz has given me a lasting gift and I cannot imagine a book more worthy of giving others and not just book lovers-a perfect gift even and maybe especially for those who think good books are mostly for the "bookish." A simply extraordinary achievement.

Even more depth than meets the eye

This book is so good, on so many levels, that it's hard to know where to begin to praise it. For those whose idols are writers, there are stellar names -- Mailer, Updike, Gordimer -- who have contributed original pieces to this unique anthology. Furthermore, each essay is intensely personal, setting forth the writer's own best-loved books and authors. You can play amateur sleuth and try to deduce how the writer's own output was shaped by what s/he cherishes, or assemble a reading list of often little-known books which have deeply influenced someone who has deeply influenced you. And the essays themselves are literature. You can consider yourself well-read, I think, and never have heard of say, Guy Davenport, described as an award-winning translator, poet, and modernist fiction writer in the handy biographical notes. Ordinarily, I wouldn't be drawn to his subject matter, but his essay is so down-to-earth and engaging, I want to reach both his books and those of others whom he admires. This book has already lead me to previously unfamiliar writers, including Carol Shields, John Casey, and Elizabeth McCracken, which automatically amortizes the purchase price over the rest of my lifetime and means I could die tomorrow and still have gotten my money's worth. My one regret is that the introduction by editor Ronald B. Shwartz, who clearly spent two years of his life's blood assembling this collection, only hints at what an extraordinary experience it must start with one good idea and build it into this impressive monument to bibliphilism. I hope the full story of this accomplishment will become his next book.

Great book for casual browsing

If you're a booklover with eclectic tastes, who likes to roam the aisles of libraries and bookstores, this is a book you'll want to keep and refer back to again and again. It is greatly rewarding not only for the books that are mentioned, but for what they reveal about the writers who were influenced by them. While many of the old standards --- Melville, Shakespeare, Hemingway, Faulkner, Proust, Joyce --- are given their due by the writers, there are surprises at every turn. For example, a book that I had never heard of --- "Epitaph of a Small Winner," by Machado de Assis, was singled out by no fewer than three of the writers (Pete Hamill, John Barth, and Thomas McGuane.) Indeed, just sifting through the bibliographical index to see which authors had multiple references (e.g. Melville had eight)was most instructive. The essays are, for the most part, thoughtful and stimulating. This is a great book for random browsing...I came away from it stimulated and entertained, but also guilty and frustrated, knowing I'll never have time to read but a tiny fraction of the books that have so inspired others.
