Chicago Tribune staffer Greene composed several of his syndicated columns around responses he received from Vietnam vets after he asked whether any of them had been spat upon. Unfortunately, the enormous impact of the columns is lost in their expansion to book form. Some servicemen were spat upon on their return, but more suffered verbal abuse or icy indifference. Many contributors point out that they did what their country asked them to do, and they were stunned by the cruelty, even savagery, of some of the anti-war protesters, many of whom proclaimed belief in love and peace. Some are still not reconciled to the treatment they received, while others welcome the change in the attitude toward them as a chance "to wipe a little spit off our hearts."

One of the few truly essential books on American military history.

To begin, this book was published in 1989 by John Deadline Enterprises, Inc. but for some reason has the name Putnam- from G.P. Putnam's Sons of New York, NY- on the spine. But anyway. My copy is a 1989 hardcover, with a white background, mostly blue lettering, and an illustration of an American flag, a GI and his duffel bag, both in olive drab. I bought my copy at the Tuckahoe Branch of Henrico County Public Library for $1.00, which is a far cry from its self-listed price of $17.95 and an indescribably long way from what it is truly worth.

But the price of this book is immaterial, as is the price of any great work. Something that so many seem to forget, but in the past and present, is that the quality or lack thereof endures long after nobody cares to remember the price.
The original price of this book is already fading into memory, but its quality will surely endure.

"Homecoming" is a work of stunning force. It makes no deliberate effort to draw you in, but if the subject matter it discusses doesn't at all interest you I don't know what will. It is the product of an overwhelming response that Greene got to a newspaper column he printed, asking for veterans of the Vietnam War to write in and tell their take on the generic story that the typical veteran returning from Vietnam was spat on by hippies at the airport.
Greene noted being told several times that readers of the column and its responses had deliberately sought privacy before reading, and some were brought to tears. That's how much emotion this book, even before its creation, involved.

This is not some definitive history of the war in Vietnam. Not in any way. It is instead a collection of stories, responses to Bob Greene's original question to Vietnam veterans. The responses it contain cover just about every kind of response possible. Vehement "Yes"s, equally forceful "No"s, and all manner of in between's. One man was bitter enough, even after so many years, that he said that unless there was a war in Texas he wouldn't show up again. I don't blame him, and I don't think anybody should.

There's a lot more to the generic story of a soldier returning from Vietnam and being spat on by a hippie. This book shows that beyond a doubt. One man, in fact, after being ignored and rejected by such institutions as the American Legion, found acceptance among the war protestors and hippies you'd think would have treated him as a pariah.

This book makes no judgement on any of the men and women who wrote in. There are occasional sections where Greene breaks in and makes commentary on his own thoughts and feelings as he assembled "Homecoming", and I thank him for adding his own comments without passing judgement.

"Homecoming" ends with a woman's story of she and her son posting a banner over their garage one morning, ten years after the end of the Vietnam War. A young man delivering newspapers arrives and tearfully thanks her for putting the sign up. When she apologizes for the sign being ten years late, the young man says, "Lady, it's never too late."

Few books have ever left so powerful an impression upon me as this one did. If you never read even one book on the Vietnam War, I implore you to make this one an exception.

Excellent account of a very bad time!

This book was everything and more that I hoped it would be. Being a Vietnam veteran it was very painful to read. I thought I had finally buried that experience where it wouldn't bother me anymore but when I started reading the book it brought all the hate, disgust and feelings of betrayal rushing back again. I buried them before and I'll do it again but I'll never forgive those that betrayed us while we were doing our duty to our country or treated us like they did when we came home. I personally believed the war was justified but whether it was or not, there was no reason for the hatred to be aimed at those of us in the service that were simply doing our jobs. My thought is that it was their way of covering the their own guilt.

I read Bob Greene's "Once Upon a Town" concerning the selfless gratitude the residents of North Platte, Nebraska bestowed on the servicemen passing by the thousands through their town during WWII. That made this book by him all the more poignant because it was almost the complete opposite. I'm not saying everyone was rude, crude or just plain obnoxious to us. There were people thanking us for serving even back then but they were drowned out by the media circus promoting dissent. I am glad the warfighters returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are being treated much better than we were even though it does make me a little jealous.

KNOW YOUR SPIT!

This is a review of HOMECOMING: WHEN THE SOLDIERS RETURNED FROM VIETNAM by Bob Greene, a prominent author and syndicated columnist for the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Mine is the hard-cover edition published by G.P. Putnam's Sons in New York during 1989. The book has 269 pages of text and has no bibliography, end-notes, or index.

Greene writes well and it's apparent from his easily read style why he's such a successful journalist. He's also open-minded. Noting the shift in public attitudes regarding those who served in Vietnam, Greene questioned the iconic accounts of returning soldiers being spat upon and verbally abused by hippies upon their return to the US. He didn't think it happened and he raised the issue in his syndicated column asking Vietnam vets to send him their experiences. They did.

Greene received thousands of replies and they form the heart of his book. Some vets recalled in detail how they'd been spat upon and abused when they returned to the US. Others recalled positive treatment upon their return. One returning soldier was picked up, welcomed home and transported to his destination by a hippie who's brother was in Vietnam.

Other vets were ignored, neither welcomed nor vilified. Greene consequently organized his book into three sections. Those who were spat upon. Those who were welcomed home and those who came home without any noteworthy incidents whatsoever.

This is a worthwhile addition to the literature of that troubled era in US history. I liked the book and gave it five stars.

The 1986 racial attack by white teenagers in Howard Beach, Queens, that left one black man dead and another severely beaten polarized New York City and came to symbolize festering racism. Hynes, who obtained three manslaughter convictions as State Special Prosecutor in the case, painstakingly re-creates his investigation in this brisk, evenhanded, modestly told procedural, written with Newsday reporter Drury. The account of the much-publicized trial is powerfully dramatic. Although the authors refrain from discussing the broad implications of the case, they offer withering portrayals of those involved, from Queens D. A. John Santucci to Mayor Edward Koch; in Hynes's telling, attorney Alton Maddox and Rev. Al Sharpton used the Howard Beach attack to further their own militant agenda.

On December 19, 1986, 12 white youths assaulted two black men, causing one to die on the expressway in the Howard Beach section of Queens, New York. This tragic event set in motion the most celebrated racial trials in recent years. With the aid of Newsday reporter Drury, Hynes, the special prosecutor on the case, gives this account the sharp detail and breakneck speed that keeps the reader interested throughout "The Incident," "The Investigation," and "The Trial." The pace only slackens when the narrative is interrupted with sideline stories and details about Hynes's personal life or peripheral people involved in the case. Overall, however, the authors have provided a well-balanced case study of a big city's racial dilemma and how its criminal justice system deals with it. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 9/15/89.

Interesting book

I bought this book because my soon to be ex brother in law was a main player in the crime this book was written about. He lied to us about who he was and we found out about it after he walked out on my sister. This book was enlightening and interesting. It's sad how people can get caught up in racial profiling. It's a sad piece of history in our country. Charles Hynes does a good job recounting the story and putting the reader at the scene.

Long since ruled an accident, the affair obviously has been unearthed to enable forces in the White House to discredit the v-p (who was at the party, too), clearing the way for the Republican president to choose a new running mate. Because of his loyalty to his classmates, Antonelli reluctantly takes the case, which is being prosecuted by an ambitious Brooklyn Catholic district attorney. Buffa writes with careful attention to detail and nuance, but lengthy description and reflection sabotage the novel's pacing, particularly in the first half. Even though he is one of the best defense attorneys in the country, the ever-modest, plain-speaking Joseph Antonelli dreads attending his Harvard Law School reunion at New York's Plaza Hotel but agrees to show up at the behest of his law-school chum, Thomas Browning, now the vice president of the U.S. Browning's keynote speech praises Antonelli for being a model attorney, but the two friends have been estranged for 20 years, dating back to an incident at the Plaza when their classmate (and Browning's girlfriend) Annie fell to her death from an eighth-floor window. Returning to the Plaza rekindles interest in the suspicious nature of Annie's death, which is precisely why Browning wanted Antonelli there, for the veep suspects that he might be indicted, if not for murder then at least for conspiring to cover up a murder. Antonelli reluctantly agrees to represent the accused, whoever it may be. Buffa's series has been a hit-or-miss thing for the last few episodes, but this time maddening suspense, captivating courtroom scenes, and a marvelously twisted ending suggest that he's jumped to the next level. Breach of Trust is my favorite of this author's books. It is a political drama so timely and realistic that I did find it difficult to put down. A brilliant Vice President chosen for political reasons needed to outfox his rivals in the same party. Is he able to do it? That is the question in amurder case just made for Joseph Antonelli. The character development is so good that one wonders if the author has known these people personally.

In this 6th. Joseph Antonelli novel, Buffa has the protagonist lawyer in NY at Harvard Law School class reunion, per request of classmate Thomas Browning, now Vice President. He's asked to be defense lawyer for expected indictment of their classmate James Haviland upon re-opening of accidental fall of Ann Malreaux, 2nd year law school classmate at Christmas Eve party several decades past.

The story line involves mutiny in White House ranks of President Walker & VP Browning, the latter seeking his own nomination & who alludes to a conspiracy to oust him in a scandal related to Annie's death. Antonelli does his homework, contacts everyone associate with Annie & enjoys assistance & sizzling romance from Gisela Hoffman, a young reporter in midst of divorce.

Demonstrated via idiosyncracies of prosecutor Caminetti & Judge Charles Scarborough, is the fierce trial Antonelli is told that must be won at all costs. We are shown the relationship of Joanna van Renaessler, Antonelli's old flame, but now wife of VP Browning -- she has kept secrets.

The plot unfolds with momentum & just when you think its over, the underlying intrigues are at last revealed: -- Antonelli is affable & crackerjack as trial lawyer but he's unprepared to the like of young Gisela. In this novel, the protagonist Antonelli really shines -- likable, lovable & a man for all seasons. This book is not to be missed.

Lighten Up, Mr. Buffa!

D.W. Buffa's "Breach of Trust", while not exactly a page-turner, is an interesting novel. Buffa's super-defense attorney Joseph Antonelli is back, this time the reluctant defendant of his former Harvard law school roommate, Thomas Browning, who happens to be the Vice President of the United States. A decades-old death - apparently accidental - of a young woman from the Antonelli/Browning circle of friends resurfaces with a politically motivated vengeance. What follows is a convoluted plot of conspiracies and politics, dredging up long buried secrets while challenging friendships, loyalties, and values.

Unfortunately, "Breach of Trust" suffers from Buffa's pretentious - if not bombastic - windy and preachy prose. Characters are philosophically somber and cynical to a fault, lending to a setting unnecessarily morose and humorless. The left-leaning Buffa definitely has a political axe to grind, bordering on yet another thinly veiled attack on the current Bush administration. But to give credit to the author, the end salvages some sense of political ambiguity and neutrality. At its best, it is a stinging indictment of politics in America, while at its worst, "Breach of Trust" is a bleak and pessimistic assessment of government and justice in America. Intelligent fiction? For sure, but at times frustrating, occassionally simply boring, and A book one you'll not find hard to put down.

The query that provides the title assumes that astronauts spend all their time in space suits, which is not the case. Other inquiries ponder why beverage glasses sweat and why lizards don't get sunburned. The most interesting section is devoted to Frustables (frustrating imponderables) on such matters as why people bite their fingernails and why kids prefer meat well done but like it rarer as they grow older?topics to which there are no pat answers. The sprightly writing is supplemented by delightful illustrations by Kassie Schwann.

Great book for the person who's always asking 'why?'

My husband picked up this book on a bargain table---he always wants to know why things are the way they are, and this book answered a lot of his questions. The author has done a lot of research into the hows and whys of everything from why the letter 'x' is used in algebra to why potato chip bags are hard to open, and many more questions I hadn't even thought of. I only wish the book was divided into general categories, but it's just as fun to read it straight through and stumble across all kinds of interesting facts. A good read for inquisitive people of all ages.

The Valley is a resting place for thousands of ancient Jedi souls, and its potential power as a tool for good or evil will remind readers of the ark of the covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark. After making a map, Morgan hides his discovery since he knows that the ascendant Empire is likely to make use of it long before the struggling rebels can.

The story then shifts to the days after Kyle's first successful rebel mission (detailed in Soldier for the Empire). From a scheming droid named 8t88--and through communications with a ghostly Jedi named Rahn--Kyle learns of the Valley and is drafted by Luke Skywalker and Mon Mothma to find his father's map at all costs. The action intensifies as Kyle--now a Jedi-in-training--races with Jerec and his band of Dark Jedi to uncover the coordinates of the Valley.

One of the best parts of Dark Forces is Dietz's characterization of the Empire, and in this volume it is the power-hungry droid, 8t88, who steals the show with lines like: "The malfunction is in your skull, a difficult place to make repairs.... A CPU makes more sense." In the end, though, the book is not as strong as the first and third volumes. One wonders, for example, why the budding romance between Kyle and Jan is interrupted by their long separations. Also, while Ezra Tucker's paintings perfectly capture the tattooed, lined face of Jerec, they are often cartoonish in comparison to Dean Williams's hyperrealism in the first volume. And the ending finds almost nothing resolved: you'll want Jedi Knight in hand right away when you turn the last page of Rebel Agent. --Patrick O'Kelley

YA-After Kyle's father is killed by an evil Jedi and Kyle has come over to the positive side of the Force, he discovers that his father has left behind the secret to the Valley of the Jedi. Kyle accepts the power of the Force and begins his initiation as a Jedi Knight even as he battles great odds to prevent misuse of the valley. Aided by his female superior officer, he completes his quest for the highly guarded information. As the story ends, they acknowledge their love for one another and as Luke Skywalker arrives, they begin plans for the next great adventure. Dietz moves the story along with plenty of battle scenes and odd space-alien life-forms. There is a seemingly never-ending supply of technological wonders and weapons. Blood flows freely, both humanoid and from the multitude of beings that inhabit that particular space environment. Droids appear frequently and carry the same importance as their humanoid counterparts. Action takes place inside of trees; along narrow passages; across the great expanse of space; and in, under, and through all sorts of buildings. For young adults who enjoy CD-ROM interactive games like Star Wars or reading space adventures, this second part of the trilogy will be of interest. A caveat: the book does differ from the LucasArts Dark Forces game.

This latest installment from the producers of Star WarsR Original Radio Dramas (Audio Reviews, LJ 8/95) is the second in a series of three stories based on the Star WarsR: Dark ForcesTM and Jedi KnightTM interactive games. As the title suggests, the plot centers around a rebel agent named Kyle Katarn, son of Morgan Katarn of the rebel alliance. With the help of his love interest/rebel alliance partner, self-taught Jedi Kyle launches a mission to find the legendary Valley of the Jedi, overthrow the evil Dark Jedi Jerek, avenge his father's death, and complete his training to become a fully realized Jedi knight. The original musical production, combined with sound effects and full dramatization, helps to move the tale along nicely; but as an audio adaptation, this novel clearly loses something in the translation. This "rebel agent" finds himself unaccompanied throughout three quarters of the story; consequently, the listener spends much of the plot with a protagonist who is constantly and obsessively "talking himself through" much of the action. However, as is often the case with these installments and their loyal readers/listeners, who really cares about such minutiae? The Star WarsR saga returns with special guest appearances by old favorites Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa-Solo. It's about time!

This book is another look at the development of Kyle Katarn, argueably the most underdeveloped and most interesting character ever to grace a graphic novel. Not to spoil anything but it's ABOUT TIME those two got together, you'd think they'd have noticed earlier! The book has some great scenes, the Raiders of the Lost Arc scene with Katarn and Gorc. The murderous Droid 88 and Raan. Still some parts didnt click, the discovery of the Valley and the Dark Jedi who I had no feel for whatsoever. Save Yun, Jerec, and Sarris...alittle. The art was excellent. I think a trilogy is not enough frankly for Katarn and he needs to have a "Mysteries of the Sith" sequel.

Not as good as the others

The first Dark Forces "graphic story album," Soldier for the Empire, was a very good and beautifully illustrated book. Unfortunately, the sequel falls short in many ways.
Picking up the action again after the Kyle Katarn's exploits in the Dark Forces computer game, this book takes place somewhere between Return of the Jedi and the conquest of Coruscant in the X-Wing novels. It details the first half of the Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight computer game, instead of being more of an original story like the Soldier, with mixed results.
At times, the action is like the last chapter of Soldier, almost word for word out of the game. At other times though, it's hard to place what's going on. Also, for obvious reasons, the book can't parallel the game detail for detail. There are more characters and details filled in between missions.
While the first book was well and succinctly written, this one is far too much so; it would have benefitted immeasurably from another fifty pages or so of materiel. Kyle, even with the extra stuff going on not in the game, seems to jump from adventure to adventure, unevenly able to call on the Force, and sometimes the chapters and situations seem to lose focus, or switch POVs without breaks. It's kind of annoying.
And the ease with which Kyle takes out Pic and Gorc...straight out of Indiana Jones...just whip out the blaster and shoot the guy. It was kind of silly.
Probably the most dissatisfying bit about this book though is the quality of illustrations. While by no means bad, the art can't stand up with Dorman's literal renditions in Jedi Knight, and certainly isn't even comparable to William's beautiful renditions in Soldier for the Empire.
Despite all this, the book isn't that bad. It still has a bunch of cool action, evil enemies, witty dialogue, and even though it is very incomplete, the you know that there'll be a sequel to wind everything up.
This book ent so good, but I'm looking forward to the third one.

I got what I was looking for on time and in a good condition. For this I commend this seller. In the annals of history they will be known as a forthright trader of goods who sells their used wares fairly and honestly. May the stars and heavens sing out praises to the retail exploits of these good people, and bestow upon them many good fortunes in the form of close parking spots at the grocery store and favorable weather conditions for picnics.
