Shelter from the Storm, by Tony Dunbar

"Time spent with Tubby Dubonnet is always a treat," proclaimed the New Orleans Times-Picayune of Dunbar's Trick Question. In Shelter from the Storm Tubby returns in is most perilous caper yet. When big-time criminal Willie LaRue flies into town for a Mardi Gras heist at New Orleans's First Alluvial Bank, LaRue figures he and his gang will be lost amid Carnival festivities. But a mass of black clouds threatens to wash out Carnival as well as the crime. Hemmed in by Mother Nature, revelers and robbers alike run for cover. While the thieves plan thier escape, Tubby attempts to thwart their murderous intentions. As the body count rises, Tubby finds himself fighting for his life - and for the very soul of his beloved city. "Dunbar revels in the rafish charm and humor of his fabulously rambunctious city," praised the New York Times Book Review. In Shelter from the Storm, Dunbar delivers a wry, compelling tale of The CIty that Care Forgot.

Amazon.com Review
New Orleans has been the favorite setting for so many mystery series (I stopped counting after two dozen) that it could easily become just another colorful crutch. But in his fourth book about lawyer Tubby Dubonnet, Tony Dunbar artfully turns the location on its head. A major character emerges from a huge rainstorm that drowns the city and threatens to wash out its entire Mardi Gras celebration. Tubby, who starts the book short of money, work, and self-esteem, literally rises--along with the water level--to the occasion. He loses a client in the flooded streets; shares a hotel room with a friendly, slightly larcenous female tourist from Chicago; and then stumbles on a trio of bank robbers whose agenda is linked to an old New Orleans property swindle. By showing the damage that a couple of days of rain can cause to the city's fragile ecosystem, Dunbar makes us really care about its fate. The same can be said about our feelings for Tubby: he's a lazy, corner-cutting, slightly shabby, occasionally reckless but decent man who turns out to be much more than a passing tourist attraction. Previous Tubby tales in paperback include City of Beads, Crooked Man, and Trick Question.

From Library Journal
Among the airport arrivals for Mardi Gras are a sexy woman looking for adventure, a pair of Atlanta money men in search of a cozy getaway, and a skinny crook plotting a bank heist. Series lawyer Tubby Dubonnet (Trick Question, Putnam, 1997), suffering pangs of loneliness, reluctantly tastes the Mardi Gras pleasures and then helps a gullible tourist through a time-share scam. Flooding from a sudden torrential rain acts as a catalytic plot agent, literally forcing interaction between Tubby and the airport arrivals. Slick prose, upbeat characters, and the particular wonders of the French Quarter will commend this to any Skip Langdon or David Robicheaux fan.

From Booklist
It's Fat Tuesday in the Big Easy. Businesses are closing early to give everyone a leg up on the festivities. For LaRue and his two henchmen, it's a good day for a bank robbery. The caper goes well, but while the trio is in the bank, the city is overwhelmed with a torrential downpour. Power is out, and even the cobblestone streets of the French Quarter are submerged. LaRue and company make their getaway in a confiscated canoe, but they panic and shoot a woman who tries to get in the canoe with them. The victim was lawyer Tubby Dubonnet's client, and though Tubby's not too tough, he's tenacious--so much so that he and his friend Marguerite eventually wind up as hostages while LaRue plots his escape. The fourth Dubonnet novel traces the same tongue-in-cheek path as its predecessors. It's packed with local color, whimsy, and witty dialogue, though with a dark edge. A good series that gets better with each entry. Wes Lukowsky

A teaser...don't waste your time
By Mike in Pa
A few authors like to introduce a story with a "teaser" book like this one. The story was moderately entertaining but was simply a "chapter" in what might have been a excellent book. The reader is left with no conclusion (other than Mr. Dunbar's thinly veiled desire to have us purchase the next "chapter").

If authors don't have the time or interest in finishing a story, don't bother to publish what you've done to date...it hurts your reputation and makes readers reluctant to read another of your works. I, for one, have put Mr. Dunbar on my "don't bother" list...this was the first and last of his works I'd consider.

Almost 5 stars, until the lack of an ending!
By Bill Swann
The first 90% of this book was great, then the author apparently got tired of writing and left both his readers and his characters suspended in time and space.

Prior to this review I've had nothing bad to say about this series, and most of this book was excellent. It has New Orleans in all of its Mardi Gras glory, a great story, great and unusual characters. There were a hundred possible ending that would made this literally a masterpiece, but no the author feels so insecure about his book he has to leave his ending for a future book. Sort of like he ran out of inspiration and only had one good story left in him, so he spread it over two books which is what no talent wannabes often do. I never purchase the second half of a book unless it is clear going in that the book is in two parts.

The real shame here is outside of this half book, Tony Dunbar was becoming one of my favorite authors, but he lost me forever!

disappointing
By Elb
This was like reading a chapter in a detective story, no end, just prepare you to buy the next installment. I enjoyed the first book in the series, this one not so much. This kind of turns me off, I will not buy the next book in the series.

I have read this book four times and I have no doubt I will read it again. It is absolutely the best book I have ever read. It has a story within a story and the time travel aspect is so believable that you actually wonder if time travel is possible. The characters are so real and you have suspense, terror, heartache and love all thrown in to make a great "can't put down" book.

Find Me (A Mallory Novel), by Carol O'Connell

From one of the most acclaimed crime writers in America comes her most astonishing novel: a story of love, loss, death-and discovery.

Over the course of eight novels, Carol O'Connell and her protagonist, New York detective Kathy Mallory, have carved out a unique place for themselves. But all that has been prelude to the remarkable story told in Find Me.

A mutilated body is found lying on the ground in Chicago, a dead hand pointing down Adams Street, also known as Route 66, a road of many names. And now of many deaths. A silent caravan of cars, dozens of them, drives down that road, each passenger bearing a photograph, but none of them the same. They are the parents of missing children, some recently disappeared, some gone a decade or more-all brought together by word that childrens' grave sites are being discovered along the Mother Road.

Kathy Mallory drives with them. The child she seeks, though, is not like the others'. It is herself-the feral child adopted off the streets, her father a blank, her mother dead and full of mysteries. During the next few extraordinary days, Mallory will find herself hunting a killer like none she has ever known, and will undergo a series of revelations not only of stunning intensity- but stunning effect.

From Publishers Weekly
When the death toll of serial killer "Mack the Knife" exceeds 100 victims along historic Route 66 in America's heartland, Kathy Mallory, on vacation from her job with the NYPD, decides to give the locals a hand in bestseller O'Connell's exciting ninth thriller to feature the frosty, unapproachable detective (after 2004's Winter House). Aided by her longtime partner Riker and police psychologist Charles Butler, Mallory butts heads with just about everyone, pursuing the case as if it were hers and hers alone. She makes little progress until the killer starts leaving a new calling card, depositing fresh kills on the highway, all with one hand chopped off and replaced with the tiny hand bones of a previous victim pointing to a new grave. Stylish prose and a magnetic lead character more than compensate for an overly complicated plot that drags in spots, particularly in the second half. For readers who have never followed Mallory, this is as good a time as ever to get acquainted. Author tour. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Early on in this ninth Kathleen Mallory novel, O'Connell observes, "By definition, enigmas lacked clarity." That oracular sentence perfectly captures the cloudy world of the Mallory novels, starring the most unlikely of NYPD detectives, a "feral" child adopted and raised by another NYPD officer and his wife. The action here begins with Mallory having disappeared from New York, and Riker, her partner, wondering if the dead woman in Mallory's apartment is a suicide or the victim of the detective's long-feared sociopathic meltdown. Meanwhile, Mallory is hurtling toward Chicago and mythic Route 66 in a VW Beetle ragtop pumped up on Porsche steroids. She's on the trail of a serial child killer who shares her obsession with the road and has been burying the bodies of female children along the fabled highway for decades. When Mallory's manic passage along 66 brings her to a forlorn caravan of parents looking for their lost children under the leadership of a weary--and possibly weird--old psychologist, Find Me quickly becomes a stunning novel of loss, anguish, psychosis, love, and redemption. The narrative is onionlike: events, motives, and other narrative necessities are peeled away layer by layer. Some layers work, others don't; a monumentally bent FBI agent leading a platoon of "body snatchers" ahead of the caravan strains credulity. But the anguish of the sad searchers and Mallory's own obsession with 66, and with her own lost childhood, simply require the reader to share the obsessions and see the story through to its end. Dense, demanding, and very powerful. Thomas Gaughan

Not for everyone
By Mick McAllister
The latest Mallory novel is generating some controversy. Does the plot signal an end to the series? Is the story too disjointed, too confusing? Myself, I enjoyed the book, though my patience wore thin sometimes as the cross-country exploration of Route 66 began to feel repetitious. In some ways, Find Me is a mirror/opposite of Stone Angel, Mallory's other venture from New York into her own history. Where Stone Angel is so rich and entertaining that we don't much care how it ends, Find Me provides an ending so brilliant that it excuses any tedium getting there.

The "mystery" of why Kathy is on the road isn't all that mysterious. The reader knows after a few pages that she is looking for her father -- in some sense. What we don't know is whether her father is a serial killer also obsessed with Route 66. Will Kathy find her father and then arrest him?

O'Connell has always done an excellent job of making others -- not just Kathy and her crew, but the most minor characters -- more interesting than the killer. Here she pushes that element to a daring extreme that may be the reason for some of the confusion and disappointment. No way to explain that without spoilers; suffice it to say that the encounter between Kathy and the killer is one of the most memorable of any mystery endings I've ever read.

O'Connell has always had her sights on something more ambitious than whodunits, and every book carefully balances Mallory's story with the suspense of tracking the killer. In every novel, the killer is revealed to be a person of no consequence beyond their impact, like a shark's, on their victims. They are creatures of eccentric banality, to twist Hannah Arendt's famous words. Here is no exception.

Mallory's world is a cartoon universe, where everyone is a bit simpler and stranger than we are used to in the real world. It is a style, like the cartoons of William Hogarth or Francisco Goya, meant to capture essentials quickly and precisely. It works, but for some readers Kathy -- and reality -- are too important to be "reduced" to cartoons. Get out of that mindset, and you will enjoy your trip on Route 66.

Mallory is back and O'Connell is in top form
By A Reader
Another reader complained that it took them a week to read this one instead of a day or two like the others. Me too. And that was great. Some of the later books in the series have been real pager turners--just slightly better-than-average routine pot-boilers. This one is a return to the strangeness and tension of the earliest Mallory novels. I had trouble reading more than two pages at a time. It was just too intense. I had to stop and let my own reaction to what I was reading settle down. My only problem was the beetle convertible hot-rod. 220 mph?!? No way! it would be airborne long before that speed.

This not a typical police procedural, murder mystery, or even as the jacket calls it, a psychological thriller. If you are looking for one of those, it will be a disappointment. It rewards the reader in an entirely different way.

But it was a most satisfactory read.

One of the best of the series so far
By ellen
Since the first Mallory book, Mallory's Oracle, we get bits and pieces about the 'Baby Thief' - she was alone, feeding out of trash cans, sleepng where she could. She was taken in by Helen and Louis Markowitz, and finally the girl found safety and love. But she never forgot why she had to live in the streets. She had a telephone # written on her hand, partially blurred. She would call all variations of that # and say 'Hi it's Kathy. I'm lost.' But no connections came from those calls..The Markowitzs gave her love and safety, but...
When the Markowitz's are gone, Mallory has a career as a Detective with NYPD. Her only friends are her foster father's poker buddies, including Charles Butler and Detective Riker, also with NYPD.
Mallory is missing from work and Riker gets a call that someone has been found dead in Mallory's apartment. When Charles and Riker go into Mallory's computer room, they find she unlocked the puzzle of the partial telephone number, and has a clue to her childhood. And so begins her journey.
Mallory has been given letters her father wrote, addressed to 'OB'. They show his passions - a silver suped up Beetle, and traveling the old Route 66. She follows his journey down the old road in her own version of a suped up Beetle. But she is not alone - there are families of lost children following that path to find their lost ones. There have been children's skeletons found on the route, and someone seems to have been using that road to kill lost children. Mallory joins them and becomes part of the team to solve this mystery. A lost child trying to find her people..Butler and Riker find her and follow also.
Here comes the rub - there is more info on the caravan, the lost ones, the FBI participants, it becomes 'ad nauseum'.
But do not give up on this book, for it will solve the mystery Mallory has been looking for. I have been reading the Mallory books since the beginning, and the answers from previous books are there.
The ending is so worth getting through the caravan stuff. We see Mallory as no one has seen her before. How this ending will effect subsequent books, one can only speculate. But speculate you will.
A must for Mallory fans.

Luke's Story (The Jesus Chronicles), by Jerry B. Jenkins, Tim LaHaye

Millions of readers made the Left Behind series bestsellers. Now the third in the authors' bestselling Jesus Chronicles is available in trade paperback.

This biblically inspired novel, third in the bestselling Jesus Chronicles, tells the story of Luke-the Gospel writer whose belief was built on the power of faith alone. Luke, who hadn't met Jesus, is skeptical of His miracles, until events in his own life irreversibly change him. Pledging himself to Christ, he begins a Gospel based on the conversion stories of believers and interviews with those who knew Him best-the disciples who spent three years with Jesus and, most important, His mother, Mary. The result would be a Scripture rich in the miraculous stories of the Lord's divinity, intended to appeal to women, nonbelievers, and the disenfranchised-and that would speak to the heart of Christians all over the world.

From Publishers Weekly
Authors of the highly successful Left Behind series of apocalyptic novels, pastor LaHaye and author Jenkins base their stories on Christian scripture. Their latest religious fiction project examines the era and story of Jesus Christ by constructing accounts of each Gospel writer's life. This volume of The Jesus Chronicles recounts the life story of the author of the Gospel of Luke. Luke, born as Loukon into a family of slaves, earns the respect of his master, Theophilus, as a child and is sent to the university in Tarsus to study medicine. From this point on, the plot, unfortunately, becomes contrived. While at school, Luke meets Saul, an arrogant fellow student who later becomes known as Paul after his conversion. Luke develops a hobby of writing stories and eventually composes his gospel at the feet of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who, while old and somewhat feeble, is able to recall the exact words her son spoke 20 years before. Fans of the authors' earlier work will likely appreciate this account, but it is unlikely to win any converts. (Feb.)

Thought-Provoking
By RMcCright
We meet the author of the New Testament's third gospel as an adolescent son of slaves. Loukon knows that he is fortunate to belong to Stoic master Theophilus who sponsors the intelligent, medically-minded youth at the university in Tarsus. In his first semester, Luke meets the vocal and passionate Saul who has no compunction when it comes to asserting the superiority of Judaism and of Jews. Luke continues to pursue a Stoic lifestyle in hopes of becoming a man in right standing, but he continues to feel that he is falling short of the mark. As ship's doctor, Luke meets Saul again years after university, although Saul is now a new man; even his name is different. This life changing encounter prompts Luke to pursue another passion: recording history. His meetings with Paul, the other apostles, and even Mary results in a detailed retelling of the most famous man in history, Jesus Christ.

Although it is a fictional work, reading it allowed this reviewer to consider the sacrifice and level of faith the story of Christ required of its followers. Luke did not ever meet Jesus and the persecution of the early church was a deterrent to its contemporaries. This work provides readers with a very small glimpse of the life-altering decision to believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God and not the mad man that the world says he was. This fictional story gives us a sense of the Author's efforts to orchestrate the lives of men to bring us His inspired Word and the luxury that is ours to have the Word sitting in our homes.

Luke's Story is # 3 in the Jesus Chronicles Series
By Patience ~ Christian/Thriller Author
If you like Biblical history like me, you should enjoy this series. Luke's story helps you visualize how the people in the Bible might have been like and how they handled various trials during Jesus time.

This story is based on the biblical account of Luke who was an early Christian writer who the Church Fathers said was the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Luke spoke Greek who lived in of Antioch in Ancient Syria. He had become a disciple and constant companion of the Apostle Paul and followed him until Paul was executed.

In "Luke's Story," Loukon who is later called Luke, is a Greek slave whose master, Theophilus, sends him to a university to become a physician. There Loukon encounters Saul of Tarsus, an arrogant debater.

Later, as a physician, Luke hears tales of a man named Jesus and his miraculous healings of one of his own patients.

After Saul of Tarsus now called Paul, is converted and becomes a follower of Jesus, Luke's life changes and he pledges himself to Jesus and decides to write a Gospel based on years of talking to believers about their testimony and listening to their stories of the Jesus's life from those who knew Him- most important, His mother, Mary.

Mr. Zampino wrote: -- there WAS NO SUCH THING AS A UNIVERSITY UNTIL THE HIGH MIDDLE AGES!!! THE CONCEPT DIDN'T EVEN EXIST!!!

Historians say different:

Historian Robert H. Gundry had the following to say concerning Greco-Roman education and the university at Tarsus:
"Greco-Roman education was liberal in its scope. Slaves supervised boys in their earlier years by giving them their first lessons and then leading them to and from private schools until they graduated into adulthood with a great deal of ceremony. As young men, they could then attend universities at Athens, Rhodes, Tarsus, Alexandria, and other places to study philosophy, rhetoric, law, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, geography, and botany" (italics mine). (Robert H. Gundry, A Survey Of The New Testament, (Grand Rapids, Zondervan Publishing House, 1994), pgs.81-82. It is clear by the author's inference that Tarsus was among the top four of the most desirable universities to attend in antiquity by the privileged classes in the Roman empire.

Also in The American Journal of Biblical Theology I found an article "The Early Life and Background of Paul the Apostle."

He stated:" Tarsus was widely known in antiquity as a "university city," as well as a city of commerce in Paul's day. Educators from all over the Roman empire came to teach at the schools of learning at Tarsus. Grecian, Egyptian, Roman, African, and many other scholars came, bringing their learning and culture with them."

Through interviews with Grace Kelly's family and friends, the author of Ford: The Men and the Machine penetrates the storybook veneer around Kelly's life to reveal a surprisingly complex, conflicted woman. Lit Guild Main.

From Publishers Weekly
Proper, demure and wholesomely beautiful, Grace Kelly was quite the opposite of what she seemed, according to this seductive biography. Lacey (The Kingdom) writes of "the eruptions of sexuality that she usually managed to conceal behind her virginal exterior." The book is likely to be much discussed, less for the story of Kelly's family background, film career and marriage to Monaco's Prince Rainier than for its startling details of sexual promiscuity before and after her marriage. Lacey captures the pageantry of the 1956 marriage, then focuses on the somewhat sleazy reality behind Monaco's charming facade and its easily bored, practical-joking ruler. The author's description of Princess Grace's passivity before her unappreciative husband and spoiled daughters will also surprise readers. "When fairy tales do not finish happily," he writes, "their ending often tends to be cruel." In his examination of the road accident that led to the princess's death in 1982 at age 51, he turns up some unpleasant possibilities. Photos. 100,000 first printing; major ad/promo; first serial to Vanity Fair; Literary Guild main selection.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
After Hollywood stardom in the Fifties, Grace Kelly, daughter of a wealthy Philadelphia businessman, retired while still glamorous to become Her Serene Highness, Princess Grace of Monaco. Her death in a 1982 automobile accident has never been explained. The fairy tale that was-or seemed to be-Kelly's life has already served as the basis of several popular biographies; the only well-written, critical biography available is James Spada's Grace: The Secret Lives of a Princess (LJ 5/1/87). Historian and journalist Lacey (Ford: The Men and the Machine, LJ 9/1/86) owes much to Spada, but Lacey's own prestige as a writer has shaken loose many new interviewees around the world. The serious work that results is rich in anecdote yet captures the broad story of an outwardly controlled "ice princess" whose promiscuous habits were the natural result of the affection withheld by the men she loved. Public libraries should expect demand.
Joyce Smothers, Monmouth Cty. Lib., Manalapan, N.J.

From Booklist
A very respectable, responsible biography of Grace Kelly by an equally honorable British biographer, author of, most notably, Majesty: Elizabeth II and the House of Windsor (1977) and Ford: The Men and the Machine (1987). Kelly was a living legend, but Lacey makes her real without really diminishing her effect and effectiveness. The facts have been presented many times before, including those about her childhood in a very competitive family from suburban Philadelphia, her early entry into acting, her relatively fluid transition into television and movies, her immediate stardom, and of course, her headline-making marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco. But Lacey does far more than recite known facts. He digs deeper, and his picture is one far more realistic than the impossibly wholesome depiction that Hollywood and the princely court of Monaco wanted us to accept. As an actress, Kelly "conducted her private life with extraordinary recklessness." Her marriage to the prince was far from idyllic (and her original reasons for marrying him were fairly complicated). She was a distinguished individual who contributed not only to the history of cinema, but also to the fortunes of tiny Monaco; however, she was no fairy-tale princess--thank goodness! Brad Hooper

great book
By A Customer
This book has a great deal of detail. I feel as if there was too much emphasis on her sex life versus her screen image, and frankly that was her business, not important in the book. Otherwise a good book.

Amazing Grace
By Natalie
I picked up "Grace" about a year ago when I found it in my mom's old book closet. Although I am relatively young, something about the stars of yesteryear attracts me more than the glitz surrounding contemporary celebrities. Grace Kelly is no exception. I knew nothing about this icon, except that she was an American princess and a Hitchcockian heroine. Mr. Lacey certainly did his share in informing me about this classic movie star. I enjoyed how he provides us with immense background on the Kelly's, a prominent family in their own right. Mr. Lacey also does a fine job in giving us the "low-down" on Monaco and its interesting history.
Also of note would be the fact that Lacey attempts (and succeeds) at presenting the seemingly ethereal Grace as a person, not the sex symbol or ice queen she is usually remembered as. He does give a lot of insight into her love life and various affairs, but you never lose sight that Grace had this innocence about her. It seemed as if she could do no wrong.
Aside from being a talented actress, Grace was a true beauty and a dedicated mother and wife. She will always be remembered as our very own princess.

From Publishers Weekly
Quick (aka Jayne Ann Krentz) gives her fans what they want in her latest historical romance, set in a movieland Victorian England. Concordia Glade, a teacher with past secrets and unconventional ideas about educating women, meets Ambrose Wells, a "private inquiry agent" with secrets of his own and an unusual tattoo, as she and her four orphaned pupils flee Aldwick Castle, which they have set on fire to hide their escape. Ambrose escorts the lovely fugitives to safety, protecting them from the criminal mastermind and his aristocratic partner who'd kept them as part of a dastardly plan to use them for profit and pleasure. Concordia returns the favor by helping Ambrose investigate the mysterious death of a London woman. Courteous, daring, resourceful, Concordia and Ambrose can't wait to ravish each other repeatedly. Who but Quick (The Paid Companion, etc.) finds such joy in chestnuts such as the boy thief mentored by the rich man he tries to rob? Or the dilettante solving cases Scotland Yard can't? Quick plunges into every cliché ("Sensation after sensation coursed through her, leaving no room for uncertainty, let alone any sense of modesty"), but energizes her fluid narration with modern sensibilities, gutsy leads and romantic excesses. There's nothing new here, but that's part of Quick's great appeal. <

The curriculum for Miss Concordia Glade's classroom has expanded from languages and social graces to explosives because that's the only way she can think of to get her charges out of their castle/prison before something terrible happens. Concordia not only destroys the building but also has to kill a thug who attacks her and her girls as they try to escape. Gentleman thief turned private investigator Ambrose Wells, who's at Aldwick Castle to look into other matters, can't believe what he's seeing, and spirits Concordia and the four teens away to the safety of his London townhouse. Concordia, like other heroines created by Quick (a pen name for Jayne Ann Krentz), is a strong feminist who gets herself into a plethora of trouble and is equally adept at saving herself. These traits frustrate alpha male Ambrose, even as he reluctantly admires her courage, ingenuity, and resourcefulness. As the heinous tale unfolds, villains appear at every turn, from the mean streets of Victorian England to the opulent parlors of London's upper crust, but Ambrose and Concordia will do anything to keep the girls safe. Absolute Scrumptcious
By Elaine C McTyer
Concordia Glade ia a freethinking, independent teacher. She has had to hide her true idenity since the death of her parents ten years ago. Her parents were very free thinkers and had been married to other people. Therefore being illigetimate, she had wisely changed her name. Now she finds herself teacher, friend, and protector to four young ladies in her care. While teaching them at a secluded castle she discovers they are to be auctioned off to the highest bidder by a notorious criminal. Immediately she comes up with a plan to escape from the castle with her charges.

Ambrose wells may very well be the last practicioner of Vanza in England. The mystic discipline has fallen out of favor over the years. He spends the wit and energy gained from his dedication to this lifestyle by solving mysteries and answering puzzling questions. In the course of an inquiry he meets Concordia as she and her charges escape from their captivity.

There are so many unanswered questions about the situation and both Ambrose and Concordia are very courious people. The more they learn the more questions. Wherever the search leads, deaths follow.

The attraction between the two of them is hot and quick, suddenly Concordia can believe in love at first sight. But marriage because of obligation is not in her vocabulary.

Ambrose's mentor John Stoner returns late in the book and has his own thoughts on the relationship between Concordia and Ambrose. He is a delightful character and I quickly checked to be sure he was the Vanza student who was saved and sent to the island to study by Edison Stokes in I THEE WED.

This is typical Amanda Quick and it is wonderful. I loved it. I read it in one sitting.

Lie by Moonlight
By A. Severance
I enjoyed this book for the following reasons. First, both of characters are likeable. I really dislike heros that fit into the catergory of, "I'm a man, your a woman, therefore I'm better than you." Ambrose Wells doesn't fall into that type of hero. Second, although, both characters have baggage stemming from their upbringings, neither are so stubborn and foolish that it gets in the way of their story. Both of these points are very important to me when considering a good book.

I would also like to point out that this book makes mention of a Cabinet of Curosities. These cabinet is also mentioned in the Jayne Castle book "After Dark". The character John Stoner, I believe was in another Amanda Quick book, but I can't seem to remember what book that was. I thought that this would be interesting to point out to those who might not of noticed it.

The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because I wasn't able to really feel for the characters. In other words, I wasn't able to see them falling in love. The story focused more of the plot of the 4 girls and their situation than the love story. I thought that was rather disappointing. However,I think this is a good book and I don't regret spending the $25 dollars for it.

Too Much Dialogue
By butterfly
I haven't read Amanda Quick since I finished Lavinia & Tobias' 2 stories. This one seemed to follow the same formula. Two non-societal leads get thrown together under criminal circumstances and the female insists they partner up to solve the mystery. Except in this case, Cooncordia Glade is a teacher with modern & unconventional sentiments. Ambrose Wells is the same person of inquiry, but with a better sense of humor. The mystery wasn't very tight, I found the motive not matched to the crime.

There is so much explaining dialogue in this novel, and a lot of the time I felt like they were just recapping events so that the reader, all who apparently have short attention spans, could remember what was going on.

In my humble opinion, I think Ms. Quick lost her way writing this book, and went with telling a story about dull mystery rather than focusing on the funny and complex Ambrose, Concordia's love and dedication to help foundlings that society would rather board up and ignore, or the endearingly interfering four students, Edwina, Theodora, Phoebe and Hannah. Speaking of whom, how many times those four names were stated together in this novel, I haven't a clue. But it's probably upwards of 500. Almost each time the 4 of them are mentioned, it's not as "the girls" or "the four students" or "Ms. Glade's girls" or "Concordia's pupils" or any other number of ways of referring to them, it's "Edwina, Theodora, Phoebe and Hannah." But that is besides the point.

I much would have rather read about Concordia being headmistress of a girls school and seeing how she inspires and gives hope to the forgotten children. This book instead was just a romance with a backdrop of a not very intelligent mystery.

Amazon won't like me saying this but DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY BUYING THIS BOOK. If you like Amanda Quick, just check it out from the library. This is one of her less than great novels. Normally she's superb.

From Publishers Weekly
The good news is that the title of this book is a bit of a misnomer, since it isn't a fad diet consisting only of rice. The menus and recipes offered here include fruits, vegetables, proteins and various carbohydrates. Pounds reportedly come off quickly, safely and in large quantities in a six-phase regimen low in protein, cholesterol and sodium, and high in fiber. According to Moscovitz, more than 20,000 people have been treated by Walter Kempner, M.D., of Duke University since he developed the diet over 40 years ago, and many have kept the weight off. The bad news is that the rigid diet must be followed exactly, allows virtually no salt or spices, and prescribes a paltry calorie intake. The author hastransferred her fanaticism from food to the Rice Diet: "Mosco-Fats" was "a 275-pound ugly mound of flesh" who sold her worldly possessions for a stay at Kempner's clinic. Recalcitrant dieters who are similarly obsessed may be inspired by this thorough book. 75,000 first printing; 75,000 ad/promo; first serial to the Star; author tour.

The Rice diet works.....
By Verena
I am on this rice diet right now. It works very well for me. From 180 pounds to 143 pounds in 7 weeks, that's quite something??? Or size 14 in the jeans to size 6 (soon 4) since 6 is getting a little to big. Or other measurements for women: 42C to 34A..I did the first phase for four weeks, then my physician ordered me to go to phase 2 and then every other phase for 2 weeks too. In the first 4 weeks I lost 25 pounds in the last 3 weeks I lost together another 12 pounds and since I am in the middle of phase 3, there are another five weeks to go. I am hoping to lose then the rest of 13 pounds alltogether. I am very fit, I am running around like crayy, everybody is shocked, cannot anymore recognize me, asks me: What did you do??? So I am telling them about this rice diet. It is so easy to achieve, it does not cost a lot, it needs a little discipline, but that's about it. The first 2 days are difficult, but from day three, all started to fall in place for me, I saw already results and it got therefore more easier to do it. I had a target: Let's see in a week... But then I was completely convinced. Just be strict and do everything, how it is written. It is really really very easy to do and seems to work for everybody. Try it!Rice Diet Report

The Rice Diet Works
By bonfireblondie
I bought this book in 1986. Used it a little but never dedicated myself to it. Fast forward to 2014. I am now older, My health was deteriorating, I was tired a lot of the time, had lots of sinus infections and colds. I have mildly high blood pressure, that I take medication for. I also have hereditary, high cholesterol. My Father died of a heart attack at 58.
I was overweight by 35 lbs, not a lot but on a small body frame and when you're older it makes breathing and walking harder. And, yes, I do emotionally, use food to make me feel better. I've done all the diets, none worked, or I couldn't stay on them for long. On my own, I just started drastically cutting calories. After 3 months of starving and exercise,I only lost 5 lbs! I was at my wits end. I thought maybe I'm just too old to lose weight and was about to resign myself to being overweight.
Then, I remembered the Rice Diet Report and decided to start it last week. It does take discipline. Everyday, is a new challenge. But being encouraged by the exciting weight loss of 3 lbs in 1 week, keeps me going. I am a sugar and salt junkie. I am prone to edema. The Rice Diet is weaning me off of those things. Without the salt, my desire for overeating is gone. If I get real hungry in between meals, I eat a fruit. I also drink plenty of water. I am hoping to get off of the high blood pressure meds. I am incredibly determined because now it's a matter of my health and the quality of the rest of my life. After a week on the Rice Diet my skin even looks better! My clothes are getting too big. I've got way more energy. My aches and pains are not so bad. Sure, initially, most of my weight loss is water weight, but it is so encouraging to get any results. I recommend the this book for anyone who has tried everything. If you really are determined to lose weight for once and for all, this may work for you. So far it is working for me, but I work at it too because I want it so much.

Buy this book with the Rice Diet Cookbook!
By Marybeth
I started the Rice Diet about 1 month ago. At first I had only the Rice Diet Cookbook as my guide, and decided I needed a little inspiration, so bought this book. It is so interesting!...and inspiring. I also found it very informative because the author gives every detail about the original Rice Diet from the actual clinic.....and the plan is different from the other more modern ricer books. She starts out with the REAL phase 1 plan which is all rice and fruit.....that is where the super fast weight loss takes place. Then you progress to rice with tomato sauce.....then go from there. I believe there are 5 phases in all. I wouldn't recommend going on all rice and fruit if you have any medical problems at all....unless you are under a doctor's supervision, because it would require adjustment of any blood pressure and diabetic medications.... but I am pretty healthy...just fat,....so had no problems at all. I am SO glad I found this book!!

Fox Evil (Walters, Minette), by Minette Walters

Minette Walters's ninth novel, Fox Evil, set in the seemingly bucolic English countryside, establishes a blistering new standard for contemporary suspense.

When elderly Ailsa Lockyer-Fox is found dead in her garden, dressed only in nightclothes and with bloodstains on the ground near her body, the finger of suspicion points at her wealthy husband, Colonel James Lockyer-Fox. A coroner's investigation deems it death by natural causes, but the gossip surrounding James refuses to go away.

Friendless and alone, James and his reclusive behavior begins to alarm his attorney, whose concern deepens when he discovers that his client has become the victim of a relentless campaign accusing him of far worse than the death of his wife. James is unwilling to fight the allegations, choosing instead to devote his energies to a desperate search for the illegitimate granddaughter who may prove his savior as he battles for his name-and his life.

From Publishers Weekly
Walters (The Ice House; The Sculptress; Acid Row) is considered by many to be the preeminent crime novelist writing in England today. This psychological thriller, her ninth novel, should satisfy both aficionados of the traditional English cozy and readers who prefer mysteries with a grimmer edge. Walters's dark drama unfolds in the tiny Dorset village of Shenstead, where Col. James Lockyer-Fox's wife, Ailsa, dressed only in flimsy nightclothes and boots, has been found dead on the terrace of Shenstead Manor. A coroner's jury declares James not guilty, but a telephone harassment campaign by unknown persons accuses him not only of the murder but other heinous crimes as well. This unrelenting pressure drives the colonel into a deep and debilitating depression. London solicitor Mark Ankerton steps in to prove his friend James innocent and to clear up the question of just what Ailsa was doing locked out of the house on a freezing night in her underwear and Wellies. His investigation leads him to a nearby group of Travelers-modern-day gypsies who roam the countryside in converted buses-who are squatting on unclaimed land, attempting to seize the property. The Travelers are led by the monstrously evil Fox, whose own agenda is much more complicated than a simple desire for free real estate. Award winner Walters rounds out her novel with several subplots, including confrontations between fox hunters and hunt saboteurs and other small scandals of rural life, all tied in the end to the resolution of the story. The writer's many fans will thoroughly enjoy this hefty, stand-alone mystery, but psychological thriller readers who are more interested in thrills than psychology may find the going a bit too slow and the eventual denouement too complicated by half.

From Booklist
The title of Walters' latest fright fest comes from a peculiarly virulent kind of skin disorder, in which hair falls out in mangy clumps. It also serves as the delightful nickname of one of Walters' main characters in this compulsive page-turner, which puts a deranged spin on the conventional village cozy. The matriarch of a wealthy family is found dead in the garden, bloodstains near her night-gowned form. The chief suspect is her husband, Colonel James Lockyer Fox; suspicion against him grows even after he has been officially cleared by the coroner. From this traditional start, Walters' narrative takes detours: into the worlds of fox-hunting saboteurs and down-and-outers living in a caravan park just outside the village. She also throws in the colonel's attempts to reconcile with his illegitimate granddaughter. All this, against the backdrop of growing community hostility toward the colonel, makes for a novel that becomes increasingly intriguing as the reader realizes how the plotlines intersect. Walters, who has won both the American Edgar and the British Gold Dagger Award, is expert at ratcheting up suspense while she portrays credibly confused and terrified characters meeting their fates. Great psychological acuity in a hair-raising suspense story. Connie Fletcher

always a pleasure to read a book by Walters
By woodstock_ap
The plot summary on the jacket cover describes the death of an elderly woman, found outdoors wearing only her nightgown, with blood on the ground nearby. I was expecting to read an investigation into the circumstances of her death. But, since Minette Walters is the author, I should not have been surprised to find much, much more going on here, and the book jacket blurb doesn't even come close to summing this one up.
Set in a small rural community in the southwest of England, with an uneasy mix of residents. Farmers and wealthy landowners who have lived in the area for several generations now have neighbors who moved out from Britain's larger cities, investing retirement funds in country houses, and imagining themselves the new lords and ladies of the manor.
New arrivals on the scene are a group of "travelers" who live in camper type vehicles, moving from place to place. Their self appointed leader has discovered a small plot of land with an uncertain ownership history, and has convinced the group that if they manage to inhabit the plot long enough, they can claim ownership.
The stage is now set for what follows. The plots in Walters' books are always hard to categorize. This is not precisely a murder mystery, although we eventually do learn the true circumstances of the woman's death, and it wasn't pretty. "Fox Evil" is a portrait of sadistic manipulation and psychological torture. The itinerant leader together with residents of the community embark on a campaign to badger the elderly widower unmercifully with an eye to obtaining all his wealth. His two estranged adult children may or may not be part of what is going on.
His attorney and granddaughter struggle to convince the old man to fight against his attackers, and are eventually assisted by a woman who is a member of the "travelers" group.
The novel also addresses animal rights, child abuse, the rights of adoptive children, embezzlement, and privacy issues. The local police force is portrayed as insightful and efficient.
Some features of "Fox Evil" harken back to "Shape of Snakes" as Walters doesn't flinch at portraying cruelty to animals. But like the conclusion of "Acid Row" she portrays a softer, gentler side. Some of the characters whom the reader grows to admire, like and respect also get their just rewards. And I was smiling as I read the last few pages.

lighter than her other works, but still a great read
By Kindle Customer
Previous reviews have covered the plot outline quite thoroughly, so no need for me to do that. I just wanted to voice my opinion that I totally enjoyed this book, aside from the fact that I started it as bedtime reading and ended up staying up to 3AM to finish it. I haven't said that about a mystery in quite a while. Granted, fans of Walters' earlier books may be disappointed by the lighter tone she uses in "Fox Evil", but I was completely satisfied with the characters interactions, the plot, the ending, the quality of the writing. Those who love the "English village" style of mysteries and shun the gruesome will find this a delightfully fresh adaptation....no Miss Marples (not that I don't enjoy her in the right mood). Only warning is references to animal cruelty, but Walters did not beat you over the head with it and for those who avoid brutality in mysteries, those passages are easy to gloss over. I was left at the end wondering how the cast of protagonists got on (though there were plenty of hints). I can't remember how long it has been since I cared enough about one character, let alone an ensemble, to wonder about their futures. I even wondered about what happens to some of the "bad" chacters. "Fox Evil" is not "The Sculptress" or "The Scold's Bridle", but I bet there are many who would enjoy it.
