From the illustrator of the #1 smash hit The Day the Crayons Quit comes the age-old tale of a boy and his moose . . .

Wilfred is a boy with rules. He lives a very orderly life. It's fortunate, then, that he has a pet who abides by rules, such as not making noise while Wilfred educates him on his record collection. There is, however, one rule that Wilfred's pet has difficulty following: Going whichever way Wilfred wants to go. Perhaps this is because Wilfred's pet doesn't quite realize that he belongs to anyone.

A moose can be obstinate in such ways.

Fortunately, the two manage to work out a compromise. Let's just say it involves apples.

Oliver Jeffers, the bestselling creator of Stuck and The Incredible Book Eating Boy, delivers another deceptively simple book sure to make kids giggle.

K-Gr 2-Wilfred wants a pet, so when a moose just happens to wander by, the boy claims him as his own and dedicates a lot of time to teaching Marcel the rules of being a good one. They fill their days exploring the countryside and taking long walks. One day, however, Wilfred discovers that his moose might have a whole other life that he knows nothing about. He must figure out how to process this shocking discovery and decide if he can accept the fact that he must alter the boundaries of their friendship. With its classic story of friendship and witty text, this beautiful picture book will appeal to children. The fonts are mixed between standard type and words that appear to be handwritten. Speech bubbles appear on some pages as well, to give voice to Wilfred and several other characters. The illustrations are a combination of oil paint onto old linotype, painted landscapes, and technical enhancements. The characters are whimsical and bright, and the appealing landscapes carry readers along on this journey of two unlikely friends. This Moose Belongs to Me will be adored by younger elementary students, particularly those who have longed to keep a wild animal as a pet.-Amy Shepherd, St. Anne's Episcopal School, Middleton, DEα(c) Copyright 2011. *Starred Review* Wilfred is a young man with seriousness of purpose (and a bow tie and suspenders), and he owns a moose. Finders keepers, after all. Wilfred explains to his moose, Marcel, all of the rules for being a good pet, but Marcel is impervious to such instructions. Indeed, the pair happens upon a little old lady only to discover that Marcel is actually Rodrigo, and not Willard’s moose at all. Willard departs, despondent, and gets himself into some trouble, involving a tangle of powder-blue string and the advent of monsters. But the moose shows up to save him, and the two arrive at a new arrangement. Or so it seems . . . Jeffers composes his trademark painterly cartoon figures atop a variety of backgrounds, including Victorian linotypes and some Serbian landscape paintings (scrupulously sourced). He mashes them together with a bit of intentional pixilation and lots of good cheer, and infuses the mix with remarkable drama, conveying a bevy of emotions with simple gestures and an astute sense of color. The result is a spirited, appealing romp that hums with motley vitality and good-natured humor, certain to induce cheers and groans and chuckles galore. Preschool-Grade 3. --Thom Barthelmess

Review
"It won’t take readers long to see that Wilfred has moose problems. He tries hard to make Marcel the moose obey his many rules ('Rule 7 [subsection b]: Maintaining a certain proximity to home'), but Marcel is only vaguely interested in Wilfred. What he really likes are apples. Wilfred’s role as moose owner is further cast into doubt when a random old lady greets Marcel as Rodrigo. 'You’re back!' she cries. (Marcel reacts warmly, but only because she has an apple.) Eventually, Wilfred is able to recognize Marcel’s independence; it’s a useful and unexpectedly heartwarming lesson in lowered expectations. Nervous Wilfred is dressed in a geeky bowtie and suspenders, while Marcel is the size of a garden shed, with antlers like towel racks. What really ups the ante are Jeffers’s (Stuck) incongruously grandiose backdrops. Wilfred’s struggle plays out against dawn-kissed mountain ranges, brooding spruces, and sweeping American plains, giving the proceedings an air of faux-solemn dignity that’s hilariously at odds with Wilfred’s dorky personality. The moose may not belong to Wilfred, but the laughs certainly belong to Jeffers. Ages 3–7. (Nov.)"--Publisher's Weekly, starred review — Publishers Weekly

“An eye-catching and imaginative book with illustrations that vary from close-ups of the imposing moose against a white background to landscapes of the moose standing tall in his very own Albert Bierstadt painting. Pet lovers and nature lovers alike will enjoy this offbeat and entertaining tale.” —Kirkus Reviews

"HILARIOUS, HEARTWARMING, AND ENTERTAINING!"
By Author/Reviewer Geri Ahearn
Bestselling author and illustrator Oliver Jeffers, well-known for 'Lost and Found' and other children's colorful picture books, delivers another delightful story about a young boy and his moose. Wilfred is a geek, who is obsessed with rules, and he expects Marcel to obey his every command. Marcel the moose wants independence, and is unaware that he belongs to anyone. Wilfred struggles to teach Marcel what to do, and what not to do as they venture up-and-down mountain ranges and other interesting locations. Wilfred is small, Marcel is very big, and they just don't have much in common. Their journey together as they become friends is a hilarious, fun-filled adventure. Where did Marcel come from, did he have another owner? What will Marcel do for apples? Does the moose listen to the rules, and will they compromise? Young children will laugh-out-loud as they read the story, while glancing at the funny illustrations that come to life. Who is Rodrigo, and will Marcel become a special pet? The story is easy-to-read, and the characters are adorable. Children who love pets and nature will cherish 'This Moose Belongs To Me.' Highly recommended for young readers, teachers, and parents. The funny story is enjoyable ,educational, and entertaining!

Kids will find this book funny
By Denyse
I bought this book for my 5 year old daughter and she loves it, this has becomes her favorite bed time story. This book is about a orderly boy named Wilfred who lives by a certain set of rules. He comes across a moose and names him Marcel. He gives Marccel a lot of rules to follow, some he follows and some not so much. So one day WIlfred and Marcle came across a lady who claim that Rodrigo her moose was back. Wilfred claim the moose was his, but the moose remains with the lady. Wilfred got stuck outside all night and Marcel rescued him and agrees to follow the rules when he feels like's it.

The illustrations are just gorgeous in this book, big, bold and beautifully well done. This book is really funny, my daughter laughs so loud every time I read her this story. The book is a quick and meaningfully read. The book is about friendship and learning how to treat others. It makes you think do we really own the pets we have? It also teaches kids that aniamls don't always follow rules of proper pet behavior. I recommend this book for all children, the author Oliver Seffers did a fantastic job. The book is a children book which consist of 32 pages.

Beautiful and brilliant
By William
This is a wonderful story written for any age of child. A boy befriends a moose. The boy starts to think of the moose as a pet, that he owns it. Then the moose goes away. The boy tries to find the moose. He finds that another person has a different name for the moose and thinks it belongs to her. Ownership issues arise. The boy must come to terms with the meaning of wildness and to respect it. The ending is downright hilarious.

This is one of the most beautifully illustrated books I have ever seen. And the message is timeless and universal. I think any age of person would enjoy it and would remember it for years to come.

Falling Awake, by Jayne Ann Krentz

The phenomenally popular bestselling author of Light in Shadow returns with a riveting tale of intrigue and intimacy that questions whether dreams can be trusted . . .

A red scarf. A roller coaster. A tidal wave of blood . . .Isabel Wright spends her days at the Belvedere Center for Sleep Research analyzing the dreams of others. Dr. Martin Belvedere, a pioneer in the field, recognized her unique talent for what he calls Level Five lucid dreaming. It's satisfying, lucrative work, but it can be emotionally draining. Especially when one of her anonymous subjects, known only as Client Number Two, captures her imagination through his compelling dream narratives. Secretly, she thinks of him as "Dream Man."

His real name is Ellis Cutler. A loner who's learned not to let anyone get too close, he works for a highly classified government agency with an interest in the potential value of lucid dreaming. And he's just been ordered by his boss to make contact with Isabel, who's been fired after the sudden death of Dr. Belvedere. Heading to California, he pushes his fantasies out of his mind, determined to maintain a professional relationship with the woman who reads his dreams, the mysterious figure he has come to think of as "Tango Dancer."

But when they meet in the flesh, the dream becomes real enough to touch. And a waking nightmare begins-when a suspicious hit-and-run leads them into a perilous web of passion, betrayal, and murder, and forces them to walk the razor-thin line between dreams and reality.

From Publishers Weekly
Isabel Wright, a Belvedere Center for Sleep Research analyst and Level Five lucid dreamer, meets the man of her dreams in bestseller Krentz's (Truth or Dare, etc.) romantic thriller. When Isabel's boss, Martin Belvedere, is found dead in his study, his son, Randolph, who was always scornful of his father's belief in dreamers capable of uncovering secrets, takes over the business. He fires Isabel before he realizes that her crime-solving through dreams pays most of the center's bills. Isabel trains to be a motivational speaker while falling into the arms of fellow lucid dreamer Ellis Cutler (aka "Dream Man"), whose dreams she had been decoding and who has likewise been dreaming of her (he thinks of her as "Tango Dancer"). Isabel's former co-workers at the Belvedere Center and Ellis's colleagues from his secret government agency provide a rich assortment of suspects and victims who must be sorted out by the lover-detectives as they wrestle good guys from the dark side, repair troubled marriages and fix ailing businesses. Though her New Age imagination sometimes runs into overdrive, Krentz holds her readers' attention with attractive, appealing protagonists, flawed but sympathetic secondary characters and winningly self-mocking humor. Her unflagging positive energy proves so overwhelming that the reader will happily make her way through a story that defies logic, based on psychology that defies reason, to a happy ending that defies description.

From Booklist
Isabel Wright thought that the new director of the Belvedere Center for Sleep Research wanted to meet to discuss her promotion; instead, Isabel is informed that her services are no longer required. With the dearth of available openings for dream analysts, Isabel is prepared to return to her old job at the Psychic Dream Hotline. But Ellis Cutler, one of two anonymous clients from the sleep research center whose dreams Isabel had been analyzing, offers Isabel the opportunity to come work for his employer, Frey-Salter, Inc., a highly classified government agency involved in dream research and the use of extreme dreaming as an investigative technique. Working for Frey-Salter, Inc., would be a dream come true for Isabel, as long as it's on her terms. Ellis is more than willing to give Isabel a more active role in his investigations, but their mutual attraction may make keeping things strictly professional between them mighty difficult. New York Times best-selling Krentz excels at crafting superior, sexy romantic suspense, and her latest has all the ingredients her readers love: a riveting plot, a nicely developed romance between a smart and independent heroine and a tough yet tender hero, and her unique, delightfully dry wit. Paranormal meets romantic suspense
By S. Feicht
Isobel Wright is in the perfect job at the Belvedere Center for Sleep Research. She interprets dreams of deep level dreamers. Isobel finds herself attracted to Client 2 and he begins invading her dreams. Then her boss dies and she gets fired. Enter Ellis Cutler who has been sent from a super secret government agency to recruit Isobel. The two team up to find the rogue agent who is trying to take over the agency.

Usually with a Krentz book I am wrapped into it from the beginning sentences, not so with this one. But eventually I was enthusiastically reading to find out who the bad guy was. This reminds me more of a Jayne Castle book than a Krentz book.

Dream Land
By S. Feicht
Romantic suspense with a touch of the paranormal is the basis for the newest Krentz novel. Isobel Wright has finally obtained a job that taps into her ability to "read" dreams. One mysterious client of Belvedere Center for Dream Research is becoming an integral part of Isobel's dreams. When Dr. Belvedere dies, Isobel is fired, and must scramble to get herself from the brink of financial ruin. Enter Ellis Cutler, sent by a super secret government agency to bring Isobel into their realm. The two combine forces to find the rogue agent who attempted to kill Ellis and who wants to take over the agency.

Usually I'm captured at the very beginning of a Krentz novel, this one didn't get me from the start but gradually it won me over. If you haven't read a Krentz novel before, try one of her others, unless you're into the paranormal.

Kwan, a seventeen-year-old Chinese half-sister, turns young Olivia's world upside down with her stories of ghosts of another time, tales that have a profound impact on Olivia's life and imagination, until she discovers a way to reconcile the ghosts of the past with her dreams of the future.

From Publishers Weekly
Again grounding her novel in family and the workings of fate, Tan (The Kitchen God's Wife) spins the tale of two sisters, two cultures, and several acts of betrayal. Kwan, who came to San Francisco from China when she was 18, remains culturally disjointed, a good-natured, superstitious peasant with a fierce belief that she has "yin eyes," which enable her to see ghosts. Kwan's younger half-sister Olivia (or Libby-ah, as Kwan calls her) is supremely annoyed by Kwan's habit of conversing with spirits and treats her with disdain. Despite herself, however, Libby is fascinated by the stories Kwan tells of her past lives, during one of which, in the late 1800s, she claims to have befriended an American missionary who was in love with an evil general. Kwan relates this story in installments that alternate with Libby's narration, which stresses her impatience with Kwan's clinging presence. But Kwan's devotion never cools: "She turns all my betrayals into love that needs to be betrayed," Libby muses. When circumstances take Kwan, Libby and Libby's estranged husband, Simon, back to Kwan's native village in China on a magazine assignment, the stories Kwan tells?of magic, violence, love and fate?begin to assume poignant?and dangerous?relevance. In Kwan, Tan has created a character with a strong, indelible voice, whose (often hilarious) pidgin English defines her whole personality. Needy, petulant, skeptical Libby is not as interesting; though she must act as Kwan's foil, demonstrating the dichotomy between imagination and reality, she is less credible and compelling, especially when she undergoes a near-spiritual conversion in the novel's denouement. Indeed, some readers may feel that the ending is less than satisfactory, but no one will deny the pleasure of Tan's seductive prose and the skill with which she unfolds the many-layered narrative. From School Library Journal
YA?Olivia, the narrator of this story, was born to an American mother and a Chinese father. She meets her 18-year-old Chinese half sister, Kwan, for the first time shortly after their father's death. Kwan adores "Libby-ah" and tries to introduce her to her Chinese heritage through stories and memories. Olivia is embarrassed by her sibling, but finds as she matures that she has inadvertently absorbed much about Chinese superstitions, spirits, and reincarnation. Olivia explains, "My sister Kwan believes she has Yin eyes. She sees those who have died and now dwell in the World of Yin..." Now in her mid-30s, Olivia, a photographer, is still seeking a meaningful life. The climax of the story comes when she and her estranged husband Simeon, a writer, go to China on assignment with Kwan as the interpreter. In the village in which she grew up, Kwan returns to the world of Yin, her mission completed. Olivia finally learns what Kwan was trying to show her: "If people we love die, then they are lost only to our ordinary senses. If we remember, we can find them anytime with our hundred secret senses." The meshing of the contemporary story of Olivia and the tales Kwan tells of her past life in late-19th century China may confuse some readers. Although this story is different from Tan's previous novels because of the supernatural twist, YAs will find some familiar elements.?Carol Clark, R. E. Lee High School, Springfield, VA

From Library Journal
As in The Joy Luck Club (LJ 2/15/89), Tan unwinds another haunting tale that examines the ties binding Chinese Americans to their ancestors. Nearing divorce from her husband, Simon, Olivia Yee is guided by her elder half-sister, the irrepressible Kwan, into the heart of China. Olivia was five when 18-year-old Kwan first joined her family in the United States, and though always irritated by Kwan's oddities, Olivia was entranced by her eerie dreams of the ghost World of Yin. Only when visiting Kwan's home in Changmian does Olivia realize the dreams are, in Kwan's mind, memories from past lives. Kwan believes she must help Olivia and Simon reunite and thereby fix a broken promise from a previous incarnation. Tan tells a mysterious, believable story and delivers Kwan's clipped, immigrant voice and engaging personality with charming clarity. Highly recommended.

Wonderful, engaging book by an author who can really interpret her work
By Sara Blatt
Amy Tan's book is very interesting in that I usually don't like a book where I don't find the major protagonist appealing. Well, this is the exception that proves the rule. There were enough complex, interesting and engaging characters that I was not bothered by finding the major character unlikeable. And this is definitely one of the audio books that is a better experience than reading the book. Amy Tan is a brilliant interpreter of her writing.

Kwan's yin eyes....
By Ratmammy
THE HUNDRED SECRET SENSES by Amy Tan
THE HUNDRED SECRET SENSES by Amy Tan uses a similar pattern which her previous books seem to follow, in which she starts the story in America with characters that are full- or part Chinese, and have a relative or two that tells them stories of the old country. In Tan's most creative book, she introduces the reader to Olivia Laguni, whose father was Chinese and mother was white. Laguni is her stepfather, her father having died when she was only a toddler. Obviously, Laguni at one point adopts her and her brothers, giving them a new name and in essence wiping out her ties to her Chinese family.
Then, along comes Kwan. From that point on, Olivia feels tormented by this half sister. By this time, Olivia's father has been gone for years now. But Kwan comes to America from China to become part of their family forever. A much older sister, Kwan brings to Olivia stories of the old country, for Kwan is the product of Olivia's father and his first wife, all of whom were living in China. Although Olivia considers herself Chinese, her ties are with her birth country of America, and she finds it very hard to relate to her older sister who seems to be more mother than sister as Olivia grows into adulthood. Kwan is there to take care of her while her mother is somewhat absent from Olivia's life. And part of Kwan's mothering is telling Olivia stories about a strange world - where she sees and talks to ghosts.
Kwan's impact on Olivia is obvious, in ways that Olivia could never admit. But as the reader sees, Olivia's relationship with Kwan grows in strength as they grow older, and especially when they make a trip to China, along with Olivia's estranged husband Simon. After years of listening to Kwan's stories of a previous life in 1800's China, this world comes to life as they explore this land that is Olivia's heritage.
THE HUNDRED SECRET SENSES was not my favorite Amy Tan book. There were a lot of elements that made it difficult to fully enjoy this story, including the paranormal facets that were part of Kwan's character. Having said this, I ended the book understanding what Tan's message was in this story and I felt very satisfied. It is not a book I highly recommend to all readers, but I feel that if one is patient enough to get through the stories that Kwan tells about her past life, one will be rewarded at the very end.

MY FIRST AMY TAN BOOK
By A Customer
My daughter was the one that told me to read this book. I read it while on vacation at the beach. It was a perfect read. I loved Kwan, and I wish I had a sister like her. Olivia her half sister was a pain in the rear. The book had two stories in one, so the anticipation of seeing what happens in both stories was a new experience for me. Such a wonderful look at the culture of Chinese-Americans in San Fransicso. I come from a Asian/Caucasian background, and was laughing at many parts of the novel because Kwan sounded so much like my mother. "Bad Luck-Bad Health this or that" Thank-you Amy Tan for writing such a wonderful story. SPOILER ALERT! I just wish the ending was a little more different....I won't put any more down, but I hope there is a continuation of this novel....Ms. Tan did leave a few loose strings or openings.

Chapter One

enter: kao k'o kung, howling

I'll never forget those days! I was getting my life back on track. I had a job, writing features for the Daily Fluxion. I had a place to live, an apartment on the ground floor of an old mansion. And soon I would be getting a roommate!

My landlord, who was art critic for the Fluxion, lived upstairs with his art treasures and a Siamese called Kao K'o Kung. Although I knew nothing about cats, I was enlisted for cat-sitting when the critic was out of town.

He wrote his reviews at home and never went near the news office. According to conventional wisdom, he never went near the art galleries either, but wrote his nasty criticism off the top of his head. Among local artists he was well hated, to coin a phrase. So no one was surprised when he was murdered in his own backyard.

That was the first time I heard the cat's "death howl," a bloodcurdling experience!

Kao K'o Kung-that smart cat!-then walked downstairs and moved in with me. I recall giving him some turkey from the Press Club that I had been saving for myself.

So here we were! Thrown together by fate! First thing I did, I changed his name to Koko.

He made no objection. He knew which side his bread was buttered on! In the days that followed we invented games to play, both athletic and intellectual. I was at work all day but made up for it by reading to him every evening-either the Daily Fluxion or the dictionary; he was not particular.

Then I began to find fault with the old mansion. It seemed to be the ancestral domain of a dynasty of moths, which were eating holes in my bathrobe and neckties. But where could I move? Apartments in my price range specified "no pets allowed." I discussed the problem with Koko, who listened thoughtfully. I told him that a friend of mine was going to Europe for three months and had suggested that I house-sit. Koko squeezed his eyes. We were getting to be pals. Then, to my surprise, he turned out be a self-appointed bodyguard and somewhat of a bloodhound!

One day he wanted to go upstairs to his old haunt. The murdered man's treasures had been removed, but I had a key to the apartment and the supply of cat litter. But that cat seemed to have his own urgent reason; he ran up and down the stairs ahead of me in anticipation.

Sure enough, there was a large tapestry still hanging in a hallway, and Koko was determined to paw his way behind it. When I went to his assistance, I discovered a door back there, which the landlord had found it advisable to conceal. It led downstairs to a small ground-floor apartment in the rear of the building, and it was filled with clues to the recent crime. It had been used as an artist's studio and still had an odor of turpentine.

Just as I was snooping around in amazement and Koko was getting some kind of early high from the paintbrushes, I heard a key turn in the rear door leading to the backyard, and a big man walked in. For a moment we were both frozen in surprise. Then he looked about wildly, grabbed a palette knife, and came at me!

Before I could find a chair to swing at him, Koko threw a catfit! The room seemed filled with snarling animals, attacking him from all sides with claws extended! I was able to clobber the guy, and we left him on the floor while we called the police. Koko spent the next few hours licking

his claws.

* * *

I was glad to move into my friend's posh apartment on the fifteenth floor of the Villa Verandah. Koko seemed happy, too. I think he liked the view. Then one day I came home from work and found a large hole in the green wool upholstery of a fine wing chair. As I examined it, with horror, Koko jumped onto the chair seat and upchucked a green fur ball-still moist!

I immediately phoned the Press Club bartender, who always had the answer to all questions.

He listened and said wisely, "Sounds like an emotional problem. You need a psycatatrist. I can tell you where to find one."

It sounded like a hoax, especially since the address he gave me was on the edge of the red-light district. And I was even more suspicious when I phoned for an appointment and was told to come alone without the cat ... but I was desperate! I reported for the consultation.

It was a tawdry house, but there were cats on every windowsill, and that was promising. I was welcomed by a kindly woman in a faded housedress accompanied by at least a dozen cats who seemed quite well adjusted. She ushered me into the parlor and gave me a cup of tea with the inevitable cat hair floating in it. No matter.

What I learned, after stating the problem, was this: Siamese, when troubled, become wool eaters. My ties and bathrobe were undoubtedly wool. Koko was lonely because he was accustomed to having someone at home all day. He needed a nice little Siamese female for a companion. Neutering would make no difference. They would be quite sweet to each other.... I found this concept extremely interesting.

Now all I had to do was find a little female Siamese....

Panic time! Here I was-a lifelong cat illiterate-involved in matchmaking between temperamental Siamese! I phoned the Press Club bartender for advice once more.

"Call the catteries listed in the Yellow Pages," he said with authority. "Check the classified ads in the paper. Call the pet hospitals!"

I did. My efforts turned up only one available candidate, and the asking price was more than my weekly paycheck at the Fluxion. I was just getting back on my feet financially. I needed to make a down payment on a used car.

Meanwhile I was afraid to leave Koko alone in the borrowed apartment; he might start eating the rugs! Once, as a test, I shut him up in the bathroom, and he howled so continuously and with such volume that there were five complaints to the manager.

Someone suggested selling Koko; it would solve the whole problem.

I considered that unthinkable. Already I felt a kinship with him that was hard to explain.

I'll never forget the frantic search for a companion who would stop Koko from eating wool!

Blank Pages and Redundant Material
By Avid Reader
I received this book as a gift, and I am so glad I did not buy it. It is a 137 page book, of which over 50 pages (FIFTY PAGES) are blank, or have bad line-art of a siamese cat. The remaining pages are large type, double spaced, half of which are just rehashes of previous books. I figure there are probably 30 pages of original material. It's obvious that Ms. Braun (or the publishers using a ghostwriter) are just trying to milk the fan base for more money. Avoid this book, even if you are a Cat Who completist.

A Rare Foul Ball from Mrs. Braun
By Dennis Phillips
Being a great fan of Koko and Yum Yum I was absolutely delighted when I saw this book. I figured that this would be a compendium of cute cat stories that were never mentioned in the actual mystery series but alas, I was wrong. Most all of the anecdotes related in this book come directly from the pages of previously published books and what little new material there is, is not very well thought out or written. I really can't imagine that Mrs. Braun actually wrote this book because it is really not up to her talent level.

Worse yet, several of the little stories give away the ending of the other books and if I had not already read most of the ones mentioned I would be quite upset. The worst thing about this book is that the idea behind it had so much promise. The lives of these two lovable cats are obviously not completely covered in the series proper for there are times when James Qwilleran, the cat's human companion, is not solving mysteries. A look at what these two felines are up to during these down times would be great fun and with a little effort and imagination this could have been a delightful book. Unfortunately, there appears to have been far to little effort and absolutely no imagination applied to this project and whoever came up with this mess should be ashamed of themselves.

The only redeeming qualities of this book are the adorable picture of the two Siamese cats on the back cover and the frequent references to T.S. Eliot's cat Rum Tum Tugger. A little class never hurts.

Cat Who Series Revisited
By Laura A. Day
I would hate for anyone to read this book and base their judgement of Braun's wonderful series of mysteries on it. This is a cute little "gift" book for dear friends who love their cats more than anything else, and who like reading about the personalities of cats. For those of us who have read and loved the "Cat Who..." series I am afraid this book does not hold much draw.

Dead Watch, by John Sandford

Through twenty-one novels featuring Lucas Davenport, Kidd, or the razor-edge world of the Night Crew, John Sandford has been writing brilliantly suspenseful, consistently surprising thrillers filled with rich characters and exceptional drama.

But Dead Watch sets a whole new level.

Early morning, Virginia, and a woman is on the run. Her husband, a former U.S. Senator, has been missing for days. Kidnapped? Murdered? She doesn't know, but she thinks she knows who's involved, and why. And that she's next.

Hours later in Washington, D.C., a cell phone rings. The White House chief of staff needs Jacob Winter now. His chief investigator and an Army Intelligence veteran, Winter knows how to move quickly and decisively, but he's never faced a problem like this. The disappearances are bad, but when the blackened body shows up barbed-wired to a tree, Winter knows there is much worse to come. And soon enough, there is. Large forces are at work, determined to do whatever it takes to achieve their ends. Winter will have to use all his resources not only to prevail but also to survive. And so will the nation. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
When Lincoln Bowe, a controversial Republican ex-senator, disappears at the start of this fast-paced thriller from bestseller Sandford (Broken Prey), the White House puts Jacob Winter, a veteran political operative with "an uncanny ability to navigate the world of bureaucracy," on the case. Bowe vanished shortly after making a fiery speech denouncing a rival, Arlo Goodman, the governor of Virginia and a demagogue who heads a volunteer militia group known as the Watchmen. When Bowe's burnt and headless corpse turns up, Winter is under even more pressure to discover those behind his murder. Aided by the dead man's attractive and possibly duplicitous widow, Madison, the fixer follows a trail of corpses and deception that suggests the killing may have been a staged piece of theater intended to derail Goodman's ascent to the presidency. Readers interested in a quick diverting romp without much gravitas will enjoy this, but serious Beltway fiction junkies might prefer their political thrillers to be a little more plausible. 500,000 announced first printing. From Booklist
Former Virginia senator Lincoln Bowe is missing. His wife, Madison, believes his bitter political rival, Governor Arlo Goodman, is behind it. Critics scoff until she reveals a security tape showing two men loosely affiliated with Goodman threatening her in her home. Bowe's disappearance is a political time bomb. The presidential conventions are just over the horizon, and both parties fear the consequences if it detonates. The president, through his chief of staff, hires Jake Winter to investigate. Bowe's body is found soon after Winter initiates his investigation. Bowe was not a saint: his sexual dalliances, with both men and women, were numerous, and his obsession with destroying Goodman's political career may have driven him to contemplate political blackmail. Winter has plenty of suspects to choose from, and he knows the answer can be found somewhere in Washington's backrooms, where third-string campaign dirty tricksters change allegiances like other people change socks. Sandford, the best-selling author of the Prey series, displays an insider's knowledge of political infighting and couples it with his skill at creating memorable characters working through the maze of a diabolical plot. (Readers of a certain age will be reminded of Ross Thomas, grand master of the D.C. thriller from an earlier era.) The real Washington is awash with its own scandals and political time bombs, so expect readers to flock to this funhouse-mirror reflection of the real thing. Wes Lukowsky

Good character, odd concept.
By David Warner
As a die-hard John Sandford fan (I read the entire Prey and Kidd series in about 4 months or so) I was disappointed that a new Kidd or Lucas novel was not out, but was very interested to see his construction of a political thriller. I bought it and finished it in a day, and it was, in a word, OK.

I think the thing that makes certain political thrillers work and others fail is character construction, and for me, there were far too many characters (and their motivations) to keep track of, and it's a fairly convoluted plot. I think the main character, Jake Winter, has a lot of potential, as too many characters that we see are law enforcement, in one form or another, but for him to be a "forensic bureaucrat", as he is called, is a unique approach for a protagonist and one that could open up a new avenue for Sandford.

All in all I give it 3 stars; it kept me interested, and was a quick and easy read, but at times was a bit hard to follow, like the conversation on a fast-paced episode of "The West Wing" where they reference people and events and places with which the listener is unfamiliar.

I, too, look forward to the return of Kidd or Lucas, but I would read another Jake Winter novel, and I suggest you give it a try. Sandford is a great writer, but this isn't his best showing.

A brand-new novel in the number-one New York Times-bestselling In Death series set in 2059 New York City. As technology and humanity collide, Detective Eve Dallas searches the darkest corners of Manhattan for an elusive killer with a passion for collecting souls...

On one of the city's hottest nights, New York Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas is sent to Central Park-and into a hellish new investigation. The victim is found on the rocks, just above the still, dark water of the lake. Around her neck is a single red ribbon. Her hands are posed, as if in prayer. But it is the eyes-removed with such precision, as if done with the careful hands of a surgeon-that have Dallas most alarmed.

As more bodies turn up, each with the same defining scars, Eve is frantic for answers. Against her instincts, she accepts help from a psychic who offers one vision after another-each with shockingly accurate details of the murders. And when partner and friend Peabody is badly injured after escaping an attack, the stakes are raised. Are the eyes a symbol? A twisted religious ritual? A souvenir? With help from her husband, Roarke, Dallas must uncover the killer's motivation before another vision becomes another nightmare. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
Though not as gripping as the previous installments in Robb's mid–21st-century In Death series (Remember When, etc.), this new offering showcases her many talents. New York policewoman Eve Dallas is on the trail of a serial killer who strangles his young female victims with a red ribbon and removes their eyes postmortem. Dallas and her longtime partner, Detective Peabody, pursue the criminal with wisecracking vigor and old-fashioned police work, assisted as well by Eve's handsome husband, billionaire businessman Roarke, and a beautiful psychic who volunteers to share her chilling visions of the murders. Naturally, the determined Dallas gets her man, though her toughness is shaken along the way by memories of her own childhood abuse, the murderer's vicious attack on Peabody and a surprising 11th-hour revelation. The Thomas Harrisesque mystery resolves rather simply, and the story gets less of an energy boost than usual from the romantic power play between Eve and Roarke and the edgy sci-fi detail that made the earlier books so distinctive. (In fact, the Manhattan of 2059 is oddly old-fashioned, with more homey crafts stores than the New York of 2004.) Nevertheless, the book is a sassy, smart-alecky read, possessing the warm characterizations and witty dialogue that have earned Robb/Roberts her huge and loyal readership.

A Pause & Some Growth for Eve
By A. Feldman
I'm a fan of series what I loved about this one was that it had a real shift in Eve and Roark, there was less questioning more accepting of what they had, and the case was unconnected to roarks business or their pasts which recent books seem to want to tie in. Maybe a calm before the storm that may come in the next books, Mavis's baby, will Eve go for hypnosis. Some people may find it a bit flat after the pace of some of the other books but I enjoyed it, I hope its a regrouping rather than a stall.

Boring --- she's written this story before
By TinaW
I love Nora Roberts' ...In Death Series. I bought the first one the minute it was published and have religiously read them since. But I have to admit this book did not hook me. If this were the first In Death book, I'd think it completely rocked. But it is like, what, the 19th and we've read this story before.

A serial killer with Mommy issues - check.

A member of Eve's inner circle gets seriously hurt and Eve blames herself - check.

Eve gives Nadine an exclusive interview and taunts the killer - check

Eve puts herself out as possible bait - check

Eve is confronted with a person who is raped and has nightmares after - check

Even consults with Dr. Mira and gets a spot on profile - check

I do admit that the little twist with the psychic in the end was good, but overall I was, dare I say it...bored. And I don't even want to get into the fact that yet again the perp was a serial killer. How many serial killers does one woman have to confront in a 3-year period? I wish Eve would get just plain old NYPD Blue type cases once in awhile.

I hate giving this series a bad review because I do like the characters, and I can go back and reread the previous books with joy, but I think she completely phoned this one in and that is a shame because now that the books are being published in hard cover they should be getting better.

So disappointed.

TERRIFIC!
By Spidey525@aol.com
This book captures all the excitment of "Spider-Hunt" and features two of Spidey enemies; Electro and Rhino. Usually these two can be considered lame at best but Gardner makes them cool. Also look out for special appearnces by Green Goblin, Prowler, and a certain 6-clawed rodent!

The Scorpion's Gate, by Richard A. Clarke

Fiction can often tell the truth better than nonfiction. And there is a lot of truth that needs to be told.
-Richard A. Clarke

From the noted counterterrorism expert and #1 bestselling author comes an astonishing fiction debut-a novel of terrorism, warring nations, and political treachery... that could happen tomorrow.

For three decades, Richard A. Clarke worked in the White House, State Department, and Pentagon. As adviser to four presidents, he traveled throughout the Middle East, visiting palaces, military bases, and intelligence centers, meeting rulers, soldiers, and spies. Some of what he found appeared in Against All Enemies. Much more of it appears here.

In an extraordinary geopolitical thriller filled with the kind of cutting-edge authenticity only someone on the inside could bring, Clarke takes readers just five years into the future, when forces both in the Middle East and the United States are at work to launch another war. But this time, it could be bigger. This time, it could be nuclear, and spread to Asia and beyond.

A coup has finally toppled the sheiks of Saudi Arabia, and put a determined but shaky Islamic government in its place. Everywhere, the scent of oil has begun to attract the scorpions, and among them are men in Washington and another capital ready to strike a devil's bargain to fundamentally realign the map of the Middle East. The plans are not the same, however-though some of the planners think they are. Hidden agendas, fierce ambition, conflicting loyalties, faulty intelligence, catastrophic miscalculation-soon the dominos will start to fall, and not even the efforts of a few dedicated men and women on the outside may be able to stop an unstoppable folly. . . .

Blending exceptional realism with intricate plotting, razor-sharp suspense, and a remarkable cast of characters, The Scorpion's Gate will be one of the most talked-about novels of the year.

Strengths and weaknesses
By ebatewell
Richard Clarke's second book is a study in strengths and weaknesses, more the former than the latter. As Clarke's first foray into fiction, the book merits four stars. Within it's pages are the promise of a future five star novel, and I hope we see a faithfully rendered movie version of this work, as it seems like it could translate very well to the screen.

As an expert on his subject matter, Clarke is (not surprisingly) very strong. The book is chock full of tidbits which could only come from an highly placed Washington insider, including some revealing "fictions" about actual events which are currently misunderstood. The novel takes the reader to places most will never see, such as the White House Situation Room and alleys in Tehran, and describes the sort of backchannels and meetings which are not publically discussed by media or elected officials, but which certainly do exist.

Clarke's knowledge of the story's elements is unsurpassed, for example the hierarchy and dynamics between various Middle Eastern factions, and the capabilities of their intelligence operations and foreign policy goals. The book's scenario of the exile of the house of Saud, replaced on the Arabian peninsula by an nascent Islamic government trying to find it's way is far from improbable. The rise of Chinese economic and military power, it's increasing modernization and industrialization leading to higher demand for imported oil is a near certainty. So is the growing influence of Iran in the Middle East, their government's effective deviousness in foreign espionage (leaving their fingerprints off of their offenses while others take the blame), and the possibility of Tehran developing nuclear weapons.

While the elements of intrigue in the story are excellent, some of Clarke's technical strengths become literary weaknesses at times. Play by play descriptions of naval and aerial battles can read like Jane's Information summaries, instead of snapping to life as the spine-tingling war stories they can and should be. Occassionally, the battle scenes can become muddled in describing who is doing what. Clarke's probable intent was to convey the fog and deception of warfare, but this instead falls short of it's potential, and some of the battles come off slightly confusing to the reader.

The main characters are solid. Though the main protagonists could have used more development, the reader does ultimately care about their fates. The motivations of each of the main actors is straightforward enough, and probably doesn't stray far from real life in terms of the motivations of career intelligence officers, foreign assets, and officials from the various governments. In portraying US officials, Clarke walks a fine line (and on at least one occasion, a not-so-fine line!) between purely fictional characters and cutouts of real people, which is not unexpected -- the cover byline reads: "Sometimes you can tell more truth through fiction." The well-informed reader will read between the lines to discover what knowledge Clarke is trying to convey about real events and people. You may even recognize some of the characters, though their names and loyalties are changed (not to protect the guilty -- more likely to protect the author from facing charges on national security violations, or worse!)

On balance, the story is excellent, well conceived, fairly well executed and highly plausible. It's an entertaining and eye opening read which will leave the earnest reader wanting Clarke's next effort.

Plauisble scenarios. Frightening possibilities
By Mark Mauer
As Richard Clarke did with a recent long essay in the Atlantic about a new hypothetical terrorist attack in America, Clarke uses his first novel to explore possible events that might happen in the world, and what it would mean for the U.S., and other countries.

Clarke's focus is on the fall of the Saud family in Saudi Arabia and the struggle among the factions there to start a new stable government. Some want a democracy (but not a US imposed democracy), others want a theocracy based on the Koran.

The Saud family's close ties to Washington come into play, as does China's growing desire for oil and their burgeoning navy (see another recent cover article of the Atlantic a few months ago for a frightening view of a possible war with China), and the continued stresses between factions of the US Government; Defense, CIA, State, etc.

For those who hate Clarke because he didn't follow the party line after September 11, you might be surprised that he does not dwell on that event and the lack of proper response in its aftermath. It is a rather apolitical book, though not surprising because career intelligence and government workers have to stay apolitical to continue to work with whatever administration is in power. It could easily be imagined that either Republicans or Democrats are in power in Clarke's book - he makes no mention of parties.

For Clarke it's the war that is the Iraq has been the crucial event in the Middle East, not really for the better, and his scenario for that country is basically that we left there in 2006; not exactly with all of our "goals" accomplished. It is a book I think either Republicans or Democrats would enjoy and gain insight from the book. And Clarke's obvious familiarity with internal power struggles and with real-life spying and intelligence gathering is well preseneted.

The story can be a little muddled, and Clarke writes without a huge amount of detail, so the book goes by fast. But it's fairly clear by the end who had what to gain, and how they went about trying to do it.

It's an interesting scenario that might be a little overly rosy at the end; though there's no guarantee of "happily ever after," but there is a lot of hope there for stability and - gasp - a long term view of the future of oil, and what the end of that oil means. And that is something that in the US at least, remains pure fantasy.

It saddens me knowing that the amount of money spent on the current war could have funded a new "Manhattan Project" with the goal of viable alternative sources of energy. It would have sparked all sorts of economic investment, ended our dependence on Middle East dictatorships like Saudi Arabia, and kept thousands of Americans and Iraqis from being blown to bits.

Frustrating but stimulates a lot of thought
By matthewarnold
Richard Clarke is an important figure in the debate about Iraq and US -- sorry, GWB's -- foreign policy. He seems to be a very decent and brave figure. That makes his thriller of more than casual interest, in that it is so clearly a roman a clef, with the Bad Guy highly Cheneyesque.

Is it a good book? Not really, but it's still worth reading for its evocation of dangerously likely scenarios about the future of Saudi and Iran. The problem is that it is too workmanlike in its style and lacks verbal flair. It plods. It remind me of Tom Clancey, though without Clancey's megaword verbiage. The characters don't quite come to life and blur -- they have no individual voice. As so often in such thrillers, the ending is somewhat mechanistically orchestrated.

Maybe our times are seeing a reversal of T.S. Eliot's claim that this is the way the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper. He lays out a worrisome and failry plausible it'll all go up in a bang possibility.

I'm glad that I read it, though. It is disturbing and convincing and suitably alarming without being melodramatic.

master of mystery keeps the hits coming again and again
By Nicholas L.
I have read many of Dean Koontz's books, my favorites being "Fear Nothing," "Sole Survivor," and "Strangers".I really enjoy how his hits are being published in sets of three now, and I recomend that more readers will start exploring these new sets.(except for those people who start reading and can't finish till its done, because they wouldn't be able to sleep for a while reading all three stories in a row) My favorite story out of this set would have to be "HideAway," for I, like many people, have a interest in death and the power of love. The other titles, "Cold Fire" and "Key to Midnight", are intense and extremely "well discriptive", as are all of his books. I would recomend this "set" to any reader who has read at least a book or two by Koontz, for the newly-reads will need to have some experiance in intense/mystery. Well, i hope that this advice served you all well, and i wish the best for all of you Koontz readers, new and experianced!

a great buy for more than one reason!
By J. duncan
i am deployed to iraq and have a great love for reading. the biggest problem with this is how fast i read. i might read a book every 2 days or so and i dont always have enough foresight to bring more than one book along. with the three novels in one, if i finish a book while im out, i have two more right there with me. i recomend you buy this for the convenience, quality of writing and the decorative hardcover makes a nice addition to any library.

cold fire, hideaway, the key to midnight
By Michael L Ambrose
cold fire was the first dean koontz that i ever read and it kept me hooked until the end. hideaway was a good book to that even though jeff goldbloom did a great acting job, the movie was no where near the exitement that the book gave. a key to midnight was a good book also and showed a very imaginative dean koontz that grabbed you and kept you from the first page.
