"SAY GOODNIGHT, GRACIE..."

With those now familiar words, George Burns and Gracie Allen bid farewell to devoted audiences at the end of each of their broadcasts throughout the Golden Age of radio and television. Now, in this moving audio portrait, George Burns tells the story of his life with Gracie, the dizzy comedienne whose "illogical logic" charmed America. Burns recalls their first meeting, the vaudeville tours, family days in Hollywood, and their lasting friendship with Jack Benny and other entertainment greats. Here is one of America's most beloved comedians remembering the woman he loved best and the extraordinary life they shared together.

From Publishers Weekly
The 92-year-old Burns here tells a true-love story of the life he shared with his wife, who died in 1964. The author (ne Nathan Birnbaum) was a Jewish kid from Brooklyn when he met Grace Allen, who was raised in an Irish-Catholic family in San Francisco. Both were struggling vaudevillians when they married in 1928, but as "Burns and Allen," they gradually advanced into the big time. Describing their professional and personal life together, Burns fills the book with infectious humor, although one feels his loss. Clearly he wants readers to know Grace, an intelligent and endearing woman far different from "Gracie," whose exquisitely timed "illogic-logic" quips made her world famous. The memoir's great appeal is further strengthened by accounts of early vaudeville and anecdotes about Jack Benny, Eddie Cantor, Fred Astaire, the Lunts and other friends. It should be a bestseller.

From Library Journal
Burns opens this book with "For forty years my act consisted of one joke. And then she died." This is a tribute to Gracie Allen, Burns's wife and partner, and the story of their life together, from vaudeville through early radio and television. Reading this entertaining account is just like listening to Burns talk. In fact, he signals jokes by telling the reader, "Now I'm puffing on my cigar." Burns gives a good behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood and their famous friends, such as Jack Benny and Ronald Reagan. But what primarily emerges is a sensitive profile of Allen, who was a tough, clever, workhorse of a comedian, despite her "Dumb Dora" role, and a generous spirit. Recommended for public libraries. Say "Thanks to Gracie". Thanks to Gracie!
By Scott R Stout
Rarely do I ever laugh out loud while reading - Geogrge made me.
Rarely do I ever get teary eyed while reading - George made me.
I've always enjoyed the work of Burns & Allen and always planned on reading this book - when I finally did I was gald that I did. I don't need to get into the historical account of thier carrer or what a wonderful, natural talent Gracie was - I'll leave that to George. But George's "comic valentine" to/about Gracie is a wonderful, heartwarming read. You can hear George reading the words to you (actually you really can if you have the audiocasette version - I'm puffing on my cigar) with his dry wit and great delivery.
If you admire Gracie or George you'll enjoy this read.
Next up.... ALL MY BEST FREINDS by George.

funny and touching
By A. Price
This book singlehandedly turned a 13 hour plane flight into a pleasant 5 minute jaunt. For that, I will always be greatful.
The books is the story of their life told through a massive collection of jokes that just never stop coming. You don't get an intimate portrait of Gracie and sometimes it is hard to tell when he is "puffing on the cigar" or not. But you do get a VERY funny and interesting look at the life of two celebrities and most importantly you get a candid and touching glimpse into George's love of Gracie. I can't believe he carried such a flame over 20 years after her death. We all should be so lucky to be so much in love.

This PEN award Winner for Best Regional Fiction is a searing, heart rendering story of one American soldier's arduous odyssey from captivity to civilization and sanity.
One dreary. drizzling morning in 1973, months after the last American POW has been released from Vietnam, the Vietcong deliver a bedraggled man bound in wire to Corpsman Stanley Baker. The prisoner's name is Lieutenant William Hill and he's a former star quarterback and one of the Navy's best and brightest. The Pentagon assumed Hill died in a crash nine year's earlier in North Vietnam--now they learn he's very much alive.
What goes on in the mind of a man held prisoner for nine years? What is the sum effect of endless months of bamboo cages, beatings--and torture?
Sergeant Baker soon realizes that Hill's unlike other POWs. Hill doesn't speak and hoards food, and he seems to be searching for a way to escape the hospital.
As Baker and his superiors soon discover, Hill may have been released but his long walk home has just begun.

This novel describes the arduous journey back to sanity of a disturbed veteran of the Vietnam War. Air ace Lieutenant William Hill has returned to freedom after nine years as a prisoner of war. Why does Hill continue to try to escape now that he is free? Why does he refuse to talk? For much of its length, the book is noticeably contrived, vacillating between thriller and human interest story. At heart, though, it is a restrained depiction of the personal cost of this tragic war; its gimmicky plot only gets in the way. The novel would have been stronger if the author had just trusted to his story. David Keymer, Dean of Students, SUNY Coll. of Technology, Utica

"One terrific novel: an arduous journey from captivity to freedom"
By Max Read
"The Long Walk" was written by author George La Fountaine (1986). Mr. Fountaine is the author of several other novels including "Two-Minute Warning" and "Flashpoint". Among his many accomplishments, he is also known as a cinematographer. Selected novels have been made into movies. Consolidated biographical information on Mr. La Fountaine appears otherwise limited.

This novel is of the Literary Fiction genre and human interest drama. The story is told by an anonymous narrator. Character dialog is interspersed with narration and directly attributable to the person speaking. The prose is not complex but is rich in imagery and elegantly constructed. The electronic version of the novel contains a good deal of grammatical and spelling errors. The errors are obvious and while annoying don't markedly detract from the reading experience.

"The Long Walk" was written and published just over a decade of the ending of the Vietnam War. The opening scenes find Lieutenant William Hill, a POW for over nine years and the last POW in Vietnam, being turned over to Corpsman Stanley Baker. It becomes obvious that Hill has been beaten and savaged by his captors to the point of insanity and repatriation seems an impossible task. Born of a Navajo father, Stanley Baker has a special compassion for Hill and assumes a dedicated effort to help him. In the Navajo culture there was a period during the westward expansion when the entire Navajo tribe was moved to Fort Sumter. As it turned out, the tribe was eventually allowed to return to their home land but they were forced to walk the three hundred miles to get there. Many died and the experience was harbored in legend as "The Long Walk", a testament to a determination to survive in spite of overwhelming odds; so began The Long Walk for Lieutenant Hill.

This is a story so well told it rivals all for a position as a truly memorable work. The plot development is exceptionally well done. The characters are wonderfully developed and the reader will come away entranced by the persons of Branch, Adjiba and Stanley. The novel's theme of survival under the most adverse of situations is brought clearly to view in the nature of the remarkable characters; not the least of which is the protagonist of the story.

I highly recommend this novel to readers and rate it "Memorable". This novel belongs in the lofty 1% of exceptional works.

A very good source for family meals and entertaining at home
By B. Marold
This `Junior League' cookbook is almost exactly what you would expect from such an organization, where all recipes appear to come from home cooks. I give this book four stars (with a caveat) instead of three because it surpasses expectations in at least two ways. First, it provides four complete entertaining and family menus per month, with instructions on day before and other advance preparations to prepare for the meal. Second, the range of dishes is very international. I was surprised to find a good recipe for Filipino spring rolls. This is not exactly Iowa church supper fare.
My biggest caveats about this book follow.
First, while the recipes are arranged by month, I believe no thought was given to whether or not fresh ingredients were appropriate for that month. The first menu is serving artichokes in January. I know the recipe calls for canned artichokes, but the sense of oddness persists. The presence of green beans and green grapes on the same menu is a testament to the incredible food distribution network which can bring California and South American produce to a Pennsylvania produce market in virtually any month of the year. But this market still does not have artichokes in January.
Second, the recipes are from many different sources, and these sources are neither professional chefs nor professional food writers. This means the quality of the recipes will be very uneven. One cannot depend on the fact that all recipes will have a uniform reliability as you would if the book in your hand was from Ina Garten or Sheila Lukins or Rachael Ray. This is important if your objective is to improve your cooking skills. As an amateur who wishes to learn new techniques from most dishes I make, I would sooner go to a book by Mario Batali or Jaques Pepin.
Third, there are a lot of prepared food ingredients in the recipes. If, like me, you are adverse to ingredients which come from the Merck Index rather than the farmer's market, I would just as soon stay away from such recipes.
Lastly, the organization of recipes is a little odd in that types of dishes are overlaid onto the monthly chapters. This would have been much better done by having 24 chapters rather than 12 which address two different purposes.
I must say this book is printed and bound so that it is very easy to use in the kitchen, as long as you have plenty of room for it's 8 ½ by 11 spiral bound format in your kitchen. This format lies flat and is very easy to photocopy pages. It also has a good index, which you may not find in most volunteer / fund raiser books of this type.
Recommended for home cooks who are not `foodies' intent on learning cooking techniques or food lore.

With honesty and compassion, Dr. Melillo explains what the latest scientific research tells us about the role of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, dispelling myths and replacing them with the facts. In addition, he presents early warning signs, a prevention plan for parents-to-be, and an intervention program for babies and young children.

Excellent book for parents and parents-to-be
By Kara Smith
This is a fantastic book for parents and especially parents-to-be. Dr. Melillo has done a remarkable job of conveying a great deal of information in a book that is wonderfully easy to read, and more importantly, offers immediately actionable instructions for lowering the probability or effects of autism.

Until recently, ASD has been thought to be purely a product of genetics; however "Autism" explains why this view is insufficient. Dr. Melillo gives a primer on epigenetics and the effects of environmental factors, and how to change one's lifestyle to improve the probabilities of having healthy, non-autistic children. (For an excellent overview of epigenetics, consider watching Nova's thirteen minute video on PBS or YouTube: [...])

It was fascinating to learn about the connection between left-brained parents and higher rates of autism - for example, Silicon Valley bears the unfortunate distinction of having one of the highest autism rates in the US. As a left-brained technical mom from SV myself, this was an eye opener. Happily, these imbalances can be assessed and corrected through exercises in the book, and Dr. Melillo reassures us that our improvements as parents will actually help the chances of our babies-to-be to be healthy.

Dr. Melillo also describes early autism warning signs that can be observed in babies as young as six months. He explains how to look for primitive reflexes present at birth that may not have disappeared as they naturally should - a strong indication that the brain is not developing normally. Several exercises are offered that should help get rid of lingering primitive reflexes, and get the brain back on track.

Personally, I had the luck to go to an amazing functional neurologist three years ago, and I can say first hand that these techniques work. (Over a year's time I had developed sound sensitivity that was often acute, to the point that hearing even whispers was terribly painful. It turned out that it was a brain balance issue, and I was given an exercise that started correcting the pain within minutes - this was a life changer. This and other exercises have aided me immensely with a right brain deficiency, and I hope that the info in Dr. Melillo's book will help me bring up my daughter in such a way as to avoid similar brain imbalances!)

I can't recommend this book highly enough. I will be purchasing several more copies for friends and family.

Excellent. Controversial, but excellent.
By Ryan
Dr. Melillo presents both sides of the argument regarding the research and stats; as well as offering a fresh perspective. I think he is on to something with his functional approach. We are seeing more and more research about neuroplasticity. We are even seeing it on TV with things like Lumosity. In my opinion, this is the field to watch when it comes to ASDs.

Put aside what you think you know (as I did) and If you are open minded, this book will help your current and future children
By Tammy Bingham
I have a son with Autism and a son with symptoms of ADHD and sensory processing disorder. After 6 years of heavy interventions I have learned so much about what environmental things triggered their disorders. I knew it was not genetic because myself nor my husband have Autism. The thing I learned quickly is that I could not blame myself for any of these triggers because I did not know about them. I had no idea that watching television or movies in the early years could impact development. I also wasn't aware at the time at how toxic our environment and food are and how those thing were impacting my son's development as well. Even though this book can be hard to take for parents who already have an affected child, it is so worth it. Dr. Melillo addresses all the things that I wish that I had known before I had children. Would it have made me not have children? No. It would have made me make sure that myself and my husband were more in balance and had healthy immune systems as well as changed what things I did with my children when they were young especially. I know that this works because I eliminated many environmental triggers with my daughter who came after, and she has developed exactly as she should. These same things can be used in reverse. My boys both have mad huge improvements through the Brain Balance Program and by eliminating toxins, inflammatory foods and by going back and re-developing areas that didn't fully develop. Dr. Melillo is the only person I have ever known that actually knows what is going on in the brain of my child and how I can change it. I always knew my son had potential because even at 3 years old he could identify words, letters and could even spell. However, he could not speak or understand instructions or use the toilet. He has great skills in the left hemisphere and poor skills in the right. Dr. Melillo's research and program has forever changed our lives by developing the weaker hemisphere allowing my son to move forward in his development. Be open minded and put aside the things you think you know about Autism or its causes. Read this book and the research to back it up. Everyone should read this book. Parents, teachers, grandparents and parents to be. It is better to find things out now then after. Even if you don't want to believe some of the triggers to avoid, they are all based on healthy eating, healthy lifestyle, etc so It can't hurt you or your children. You can read the journey of my children through the Brain Balance program which is a real life documented account of the changes and improvements they made by going to ourbrainbalancejourney.blogspot.com

Book of the Dead, by Patricia Cornwell

From America's # 1 bestselling crime writer comes the extraordinary new Dr. Kay Scarpetta novel.

The "book of the dead" is the morgue log, a ledger in which all cases are entered by hand. For Kay Scarpetta, however, it is about to take on a new meaning. Fresh from her bruising battle with a psychopath in Florida, Scarpetta decides it's time for a change of pace, not only personally and professionally but geographically. Moving to the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina, she opens a unique private forensic pathology practice, one in which she and her colleagues-including Pete Marino and her niece, Lucy-offer expert crime-scene investigation and autopsy services to communities lacking local access to modern, competent death investigation technology.

It seems like an ideal situation, until the new battles start-with local politicians, with entrenched interests, with someone whose covert attempts at sabotage are clearly meant to run Scarpetta out of town. And that's before the murders and other violent deaths even begin.

A young man from a well-known family jumps off a water tower. A woman is found ritualistically murdered in her multimillion-dollar beach home. The body of an abused young boy is discovered dumped in a desolate marsh. Meanwhile, in distant New England, problems with a prominent patient at a Harvard-affiliated psychiatric hospital begin to hint at interconnections that are as hard to imagine as they are horrible.

Kay Scarpetta has dealt with many brutal and unusual crimes before, but never a string of them as baffling, or as terrifying, as the ones confronting her now. Before she is through, that book of the dead will contain many names-and the pen may be poised to write in her own.

The first name in forensics. The last name in suspense. Once again, Patricia Cornwell proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Cornwell's 15th novel to feature Dr. Kay Scarpetta (after 2005's Predator) delivers her trademark grisly crime scenes, but lacks the coherence and emotional resonance of earlier books. Soon after relocating to Charleston, S.C., to launch a private forensics lab, Scarpetta is asked to consult on the murder of U.S. tennis star Drew Martin, whose mutilated body was found in Rome. Contradictory evidence leaves Scarpetta, the Italian carabinieri and Scarpetta's lover, forensic psychologist Benton Wesley, stumped. But when she discovers unsettling connections between Martin's murder, the body of an unidentified South Carolina boy and her old nemesis, the maniacal psychiatrist Dr. Marilyn Self, Scarpetta encounters a killer as deadly as any she's ever faced. With her recent switch from first- to third-person narration, Cornwell loses what once made her series so compelling: a window into the mind of a strong, intelligent woman holding her own in a profession dominated by men. Here, the abrupt shifts in point of view slow the momentum, and the reader flounders in excessive forensic minutiae.

From Booklist
It's hard to fault Cornwell for trying to redeem herself after missing the mark with her last few Kay Scarpetta novels, but this new one won't do the trick. The frosty forensic pathologist and her entourage remain as annoyingly self-absored and screwed up as ever, and their emotional baggage once again gets in the way of the story. A lengthy, vivid scene during which a young tennis star is slowly and brutally tortured sets up the mystery, which unfolds in artless leaps, mostly through halting dialogue and occasional forays into the mind of the killer. Once again Cornwell trots out venal characters from previous Scarpetta books; prominent here is psycho-bitch teleshrink Dr. Self (Predator, 2005), who is hoarding information about what turns out to be a string of loosely related murders. Then there's Scarpetta's longtime investigator, Pete Marino, foulmouthed and crude but tolerated, who reveals true ugliness in what may be the best scene in the book. As to forensic detail, it seems right up to the minute, and Scarpetta uses it often in her search for the killer, all the while trying to preserve balance in her personal life. Only for diehard Cornwell fans, of whom there are still many, despite the author's continued slump. Zvirin, Stephanie

Review
If Michelin rated mysteries, this would get three stars. "Book of the Dead" by Patricia Cornwell. Charles Dickens would be impressed with both characters in this book and their names, e.g. Dr, Marilyn Self, a malignantly conniving deranged TV psychiatrist. The tales heroine, Kay Scarpetta, is a private forensic pathologist grappling with the murder of a famous teenage American tennis champ in Rome. At the same time she has to deal with the murder of a malnourished and badly beaten child. Scarpettas relations with her colleagues, not to mention those with her significant other, are tumultuous and tangled. All these characters have varying levels of unredeeming traits.
What a walloping, riveting mix of mystery, adventure and psychology, author Cornell certainly is skilled at dissecting the not always attractive innards of human nature.

oh dear, oh dear.
By frumiousb
Dear Patricia Cornwell,

I wrote you a letter back in 2005 after you released Trace. I was, quite frankly, worried about the direction that you were taking poor Kay Scarpetta. And I must say that The Book of the Dead has not done anything to set my worries to rest.

I'll start with the things that I liked. I read once that you should always open a critique with things that you like. I liked that you let Scarpetta finally make fun of herself for some of the conspiracies which she imagines are aimed in her direction. It beggared the imagination that absolutely everybody was out to get the poor woman. In this book, many people were *not* out to get her. And that was a refreshing change. And for that I give you an extra star.

But, oh dear, the rest of the book...

First of all, shock schlock is one of the most virulent diseases of modern airplane novels. The world doesn't need another entry in the race to find The Most Sadistic Serial Killer Ever. Just say no. Please work with a nice straightforward killing, and solve it! I realize that this sounds terribly retro. However, I am tired of seeing writers burn their creativity in an effort to imagine a string of ever more icky things to do with eye sockets and bath tubs.

Second, you failed to get my disbelief to suspend. Too many coincidences. Too many links between all the characters and killings. Too much. Way too much. My disbelief actually didn't even levitate, let alone suspend. Honestly, I think that you ought to have a serious chat with your editor on this point. That is the person who should get paid to warn you that you have broken your plot. And you should listen to them if they do make warnings like that.

Last but not least, Dr. Self. Drop her. Drop this thread. Drop this character. I repeat the "oh dear, oh dear" when it comes to Dr. Self. She is not readable. She is not interesting. She is not anything. Let poor Kay settle down in Charleston without any more outside fuss than her already tangled relationships provide.

Actually, that brings me to a suggestion. Once upon a time, detective novels did this quaint thing where the world around them featured as a character in the work. The novelists used the local color and the detective became a vehicle through which the reader could explore the world. You seemed as though you kind of were starting to get at this with Bull. That was good, but then you got distracted. You wandered off and forgot about him. It was sad. Why don't you try that the next time?

I keep reading your books, largely because I still have a strong affection for Kay from back in the day. I also kind of like that you are one of the few mystery writers who allows your character change, and doesn't keep them encased in a plot-like amber. Please don't make me regret liking you for that, okay?

Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,

the frumious bandersnatch.

Now, from the number-one bestselling author of The Horse Whisperer comes an epic thriller of the human heart.

Two backcountry skiers find the body of a young woman embedded in the ice of a remote mountain creek. All through the night, police work with arc lights and chain saws to dig her out. But identification doesn't take as long. Abbie Cooper is wanted for murder and acts of eco-terrorism, and her picture is on law-enforcement computers all across America. But just how did she die? And what was the trail of events that led this joyous, golden child of a loving family so tragically astray?

In a journey of discovery and redemption, from the streets of New York to the daunting grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, The Divide delves into the dynamics of a fractured family and their struggle with the pain of lost happiness. Electrifying and heartbreaking, master storyteller Nicholas Evans's new novel delivers an extraordinary tale about the timeless power of nature, and about the yearnings, hopes, and disillusionments that connect-and separate -all men and women.

From Publishers Weekly
This fourth novel lacks the power and intensity of Evans's debut, The Horse Whisperer (1995), and it's not nearly as carefully written. A pretty, upper-middle-class girl is discovered frozen in Montana ice and is soon identified as Abbie Cooper, wanted for murder by the FBI. After a promising beginning that introduces a colorful cast of Montana locals, Evans breaks off and flashes back to Abbie's upbringing in suburban New York, and centers the book on Abbie's now-divorced parents, Ben and Sarah. Evans follows the Coopers' high-end careers and estrangement from their domestic lives in meticulous, mind-numbing detail; their separation propels the already idealistic Abbie into the arms of Rolf, a shadowy eco-terrorist. As Abbie's Patty Hearst-like adventures in the eco-underworld slowly unfold, Ben takes up with Sante Fe-based artist Eve, and Sarah is left alone with son Josh, who emerges late in the novel as an improbable principal. Compelling minor characters like Sheriff Charlie Riggs and besieged ranchers Ray and Martha Hawkins are largely wasted. All winds down to a sadder, wiser, relatively reconciled ending that conforms to the norms of family drama, and of romance. The most vivid thing in the book is the wrangling early on over Abbie's remains. Copyright (c) Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Evans demonstrates the same intricacy of plot and depth of characterization that defined his international best-seller The Horse Whisperer (1995). When the frozen body of a young woman is discovered in a -remote creek in the Rocky Mountains, the heartrending story of a family in crisis begins to unfold. Reaching back in time, members of the seemingly perfect Cooper family present their version of the events, emotions, and twists of fate that forever altered the benign course of their collective lives. After the unanticipated divorce of Sarah and Benjamin Cooper, their daughter, Abbie, becomes involved with a dangerous ecoterrorist group, while their son, Josh, drifts along in a marijuana-fueled haze. As they all move inexorably toward the ultimate tragedy, their individual perspectives coalesce, providing the reader with an opportunity to fully understand the toxic intersection of expectations, needs, and desires that inevitably caused their family unit to implode. Attempting to understand how and why Abbie wound up in the bottom of the creek, the Coopers are finally able to come to terms with the past and move toward the future. Sure to be a runaway success, this lyrical novel runs the gamut from devastation to despair to deliverance. Margaret Flanagan

Great story - bittersweet ending
By Edie Jacobs
This was my first book by Nicholas Evans. I know he is an acclaimed author and have seen the "Horse Whisperer" movie. It was the blurb on the book jacket that intrigued me. After I read a few chapters I wasn't sure I wanted to read the rest. I have a daughter that has been missing for 20 years under similar circumstances, and this book really was touching me to the core. But I read on.

Contrary to other reviewers opinions, I think the characters are very believeable. These tragedies do happen to families, good families. Good marriages fall apart for complex reasons. Abbie reacted to her parent's breakup in a very real way. When her world changed she became very insecure and vulnerable to causes and people that gave her a purpose, even if they were wrong. And yes, even kids from good homes and good parents are capable of making grave mistakes that change their lives forever.

I liked Evan's style of writing the ending first, and then backtracking to develop the plot. We know right from the start that Abbie is dead, but we need to know how it all came to be. The story is both compelling and so very tragic. Evan's is a good writer and I plan to read more of his books. Give "The Divide" a chance. You won't be sorry.

A powerful, interesting and emotional look at marriage and the differences between men and women
By Bookreporter
Nicholas Evans's new book, THE DIVIDE, may turn out to be one of my favorite books of the year. The story is that of the Cooper family --- Ben, Sarah, Abbie and Josh --- who start out as a typically happy middle class family, until a series of events tears them apart.

The title has a dual meaning. In addition to being the name of the ranch where the Coopers visited for two weeks each summer, the book's title also represents the divide between men and women, which is portrayed in the unraveling of the Cooper family's marriage. The lives of their loved ones are torn apart by this separation, which in turn leads to the more devastating destruction of their daughter, Abbie.

At the start of the novel, two skiers find the body of a young woman embedded in the ice of a remote mountain creek. The police work throughout the night to dig her out. She is later identified as Abbie Cooper, who was wanted by the FBI for murder and acts of eco-terrorism.

The book then proceeds to tell the story of Abbie's family, beginning with Ben and Sarah, their courtship and eventual union. Ben, who has been unhappy for a long time, knows his love for Sarah is not enough to keep the marriage going and therefore announces his decision to leave the family. The "catalyst," as Ben tells Sarah, is Eve, a lovely woman whom they had met at the Divide the last year they vacationed there. While at first Eve was sought out as a friend, she is now the enemy.

Ben's wife and children react a lot more unfavorably than he had anticipated, and each handles his or her grief in slightly different ways. Sarah grows angry and resentful, while son Josh becomes distant. Abbie, who was Ben's favorite, turns her anger toward her father into something destructive and exhibits behavior that is out of control.

The year of her parents' separation, Abbie begins her freshman year at a college in Montana (against their wishes) and finds her interests focused on groups that lead radical protests at major political events. But when she meets a man introduced to her as Rolf, Abbie's life takes an even more dangerous turn as she becomes involved in his treacherous attempts to bring attention to his causes, burning down buildings for the sake of his beliefs.

THE DIVIDE tells two stories --- the breakdown of a marriage, and the destruction of a young girl full of promise. Abbie's story is heartbreaking and tragic, which will prompt readers to ask themselves, "Whose fault is this?" While the bulk of the novel is told in flashbacks, Evans does allow his characters to resolve their issues, giving closure to the mystery of Abbie's death, as well as resolution to Ben and Sarah's relationship.

Like the authors' previous work --- THE HORSE WHISPERER, THE SMOKE JUMPER and THE LOOP --- much of the story is set in Montana, which Evans describes beautifully. In the opening pages readers can see, and feel, the setting. This continues throughout the pages and there are times where the landscape almost becomes a character as much as a place.

Nicholas Evans writes emotion with extraordinary candor. Woven in the story is a stark look at what marriage means and the differences between men and women. Beyond this, Evans is a great storyteller. You will close this book wanting to talk about it. If this book doesn't pick up new fans for Evans's work, I would be greatly surprised. Highly recommended.

Addictive, tender, moving - a bitingly contemporary tale.
By Antonia Francis
What is it that divides a man from a woman, a parent from a child, an environmentalist from an eco-terrorist? What makes us whole and what has to give when that wholeness is shattered? Nicholas Evans plots with a poet's pen. His book is addictive; both a thriller and a tender exploration of love and family. It delves into the impossible places, where remaining true to yourself can be at odds with all other obligations. This is a bitingly contemporary tale, full of laughter and beauty, lightness and sorrow. It's definitely Evans' best yet. The characters of the Divide slowly creep up on you. They endear you, engage you, surprise you, make you giggle. Put down this book and you feel enhanced by them -they've become your friends. And it's in this context that Evans performs his magic. For the horror that emerges, emerges largely from his character's love and good will, not their hate or innate evil. In this book, reacting to injustice can poison you, and reacting to your heart can poison others, yet both instincts define us as civilized, caring beings. It isn't easy, bridging the divide: Evans has made a work of art out of it.

Split Image (Jesse Stone, No. 9), by Robert B. Parker

Family ties prove deadly in the brilliant new Jesse Stone novel from New York Times-bestselling author Robert B. Parker.

The body in the trunk was just the beginning.

Turns out the stiff was a foot soldier for local tough guy Reggie Galen, now enjoying a comfortable "retirement" with his beautiful wife, Rebecca, in the nicest part of Paradise. Living next door are Knocko Moynihan and his wife, Robbie, who also happens to be Rebecca's twin. But what initially appears to be a low-level mob hit takes on new meaning when a high-ranking crime figure is found dead on Paradise Beach.

Stressed by the case, his failed relationship with his ex-wife, and his ongoing battle with the bottle, Jesse needs something to keep him from spinning out of control. When private investigator Sunny Randall comes into town on a case, she asks for Jesse's help. As their professional and personal relationships become intertwined, both Jesse and Sunny realize that they have much in common with both their victims and their suspects-and with each other.

  • Jesse Stone series, #9.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Parker's enjoyable ninth novel featuring Paradise, Mass., police chief Jesse Stone (after Night and Day), focuses on Stone's deepening connection with PI Sunny Randall, the star of her own series (Spare Change, etc.). Both Jesse and Sunny are still recovering from failed relationships, and Parker does a nice job of integrating their separate therapy sessions (in Sunny's case, with Susan Silverman, the significant other of Parker's best-known detective, Spenser) with two criminal investigations. The parents of 18-year-old Cheryl DeMarco ask Sunny for help in getting Cheryl out of a religious cult, while Stone probes the gunshot murder of Petrov Ognowski, a mob soldier whose boss, Reggie Galen, is the next-door neighbor of another gangster. Neither case is particularly compelling on its own, but they effectively serve as plot devices for the main characters to understand more about themselves and each other. (Feb.)

From Booklist
Petrov Ognowski is dead. A bullet bounced around inside his skull for about six hours before “Suit” Simpson, a patrol officer in the small Massachusetts town of Paradise, found the body. Petrov worked for Reggie Galen, one of two crime bosses who call Paradise home. The other, Knocko Moynihan, lives across the street from Galen. Suit’s boss, chief of police Jesse Stone, finally has occasion to find out why two onetime rivals choose to be neighbors. (Seems they married twin sisters, Rebecca and Roberta, known as the Bang Bang Twins in high school.) Reggie and Knocko are shocked about Petrov’s fate but give Jesse no help with the case. In the meantime, Jesse, still hurting from the latest breakup with his ex-wife, is helping old friend, private detective Sunny Randall, star of her own series, track down a teenager who has moved in with a New Age commune. The three nonconverging plotlines are linked tenuously by one theme: the search for love—the two mobsters with their Bang Bang twins; the teenager, denied affection from her rigidly aristocratic parents, with her commune cohorts; and Jesse and Sunny with each other. And the crimes? The commune is more creepy than comfy, and the Bang Bang Twins may have set in motion a series of events that will lead to violence. Parker’s ninth Jesse Stone novel finds the series in slight decline. The plotlines are thin—hence the need for three—but the dialogue is sharp, and the Jesse-Sunny romance has possibilities. --Wes Lukowsky

Jesse and Sunny, moving forward.
By Don In Fremont
So let's deal with the elephant in the room right away: how does one review a book when the author unexpectedly dies while it's being read?

The death of Dr. Parker was a shock to the genre community, to be sure. Eulogies steeped in eloquence can be found with just a few clicks. The eloquence is deserved, Parker saved the PI genre. That is not debatable. So we will leave those eulogies for you to find (we recommend the one from the NY Times), and say, going forward, this review takes that sad fact into account not one bit.

Split Image is more accurately described as a Jesse Stone/Sunny Randall Novel, both characters are present, together and apart.

Our story begins as Sunny visits Jesse for professional consult. She's been hired to look into an "eccentric" religious organization based in Paradise known as The Renewal. Her clients are parents whose daughter has moved into their house in Paradise. Sunny isn't quite sure if her clients are worried about their daughter or their reputation, and she starts her investigation by getting a briefing from the Paradise Police Chief, with whom she has an interesting romantic relationship. This briefing is filled with the banter that Parker is most famous for, and we immediately feel at home with these two. We like the fact that they are each others' refuge from bad situations in their own lives--Jesse's, the near-constant disappointment brought by his ex-wife, Jenn; Sunny, the irresolvable distance between her and her ex-husband, Richie.

During their chat, a body is discovered in Paradise, that of Mob Enforcer Petrov Ognowski. Jesse leaves Sunny to her business, and start digging. He finds that Petrov was a soldier for Reggie Galen, who lives in a very fashionable house, next door to a nearly-identical house where resides Knocko Moynihan, another "colorful" fella. He then finds out that both gentlemen are married to....wait for it....IDENTICAL TWINS. Rebecca and Robbie, the Bang Bang Twins.

Let your minds get busy, because Parker clearly did the same thing. Two women, growing up separate but the same. Dressing with the same clothes. Making every effort to be indistinguishable. Sleeping with each others' boyfriends, etc.

Parker has big fun exploring the psychosis of all this, from Jesse interviewing the parents, to being a temporary object of the twins' affection during an interview.

Sunny works her way through The Renewal, and her first impression is fairly benign. A little kooky, but her client's daughter seems both happy and healthy. She reports this to her clients, then learns the daughter has disappeared from The Renewal residence. Vetting the usual suspects, Sunny moves her focus back to the cult, and things get pretty interesting at that point. Along the way, Parker shares Sunny's therapy session with Boston's Greatest Shrink, Susan Silverman. We always enjoy these interludes, as they provide a strictly empirical look at Susan, something we definitely don't get from the Spenser books. As she pokes into The Renewal, it will surprise no one that things aren't as benign as she once thought.

Don't wait too long for these two cases to intersect, because they don't. They simply give us the joy of watching Jesse and Sunny, together and apart, do what they do and then ruminate on it. Sound familiar? It should.

And that's the key to why Parker's books are so effective. He lets his characters tell the story. He puts them on the path, and then more or less gets out of the way.

Split Image moves the stories of both Jesse Stone and Sunny Randall, together and apart, forward. Parker weaves in the great supporting cast in Paradise, primarily Molly Crane and Suitcase Simpson, with his usual skill.

Basically, it's a story of what happens when a childhood psychosis is untreated, perhaps encouraged, and manifests itself in adult behavior. Parker excels at this kind of superficial examination (we're not interested in clinical, are we?) to tell his story, and it's the main strength of Split Image.

Fascinating Conflicts and Resolutions
By Donald Mitchell
"He also split the rock, and the waters gushed out." -- Isaiah 48:21

I held off starting this book until I had absorbed and become accustomed to the news of Robert B. Parker's passing. Rather than anticipating that there would be dozens more Parker novels coming soon, I realized that the time had come to more carefully examine and consider the last few novels in the editorial pipeline.

Split Image was a pleasant surprise for me in several dimensions. Although the cover refers to this as a Jesse Stone novel, there's quite a lot of Sunny Randall in the book, too, as she pursues a private investigation in Paradise, that well-known home and haunt for mobbed-up crooks and moral-appearing bad guys. Their interactions are rich in this series, and Split Image is one of the best books for bringing out the foundations for the mutual attractions and hurdles.

In addition, Mr. Parker has handled a sexually tinged story with much more deftness than he usually did in the past. Sometimes his novels seem to be more like exercises in voyeurism concerning the vulgar than they are stories about human sexuality in all of its dimensions.

To me the best police procedural and crime novels start with an unusual premise . . . and then play out in unexpected ways. Here the premise is one that I would never have come up with in a million years: Two mobsters who don't care that much for one another marry twins and live next door to one another in (where else?) Paradise.

In many police procedurals, you know exactly what to expect from the beginning. Mr. Parker rewards us with a plot that has more surprises to keep things interesting than we have any right to expect. I liked that.

In some of Mr. Parker's novels from recent years, the psychological element is so large in the book that you might feel like you are in a therapy session yourself rather than reading about crime, criminals, and the idealists (Don Quixote's in disguise) Mr. Parker likes to set after those who need punishment. In Split Image, that element adds to the story and doesn't weigh too heavily.

How would I characterize this story? Everything works together in a nice balance. If I hadn't read the book, I would have been skeptical that there was still a novel to be written about Jesse Stone that would be this satisfying.

Bravo, Mr. Parker! I'm sorry you aren't here to read this praise. I'm going to miss your amazing dialogue and your ability to craft unusual stories such as this one that leave me hungry for more.

Pure Parker
By Ted Feit
We'll never know how Robert B. Parker intended to carry through in the continuing development of the Jesse Stone-Sunny Randall relationship, but at least we have this novel which, at the very least, holds out the promise they each can address their psychological roadblocks: Jesse's lingering love for his ex-wife and Sonny's prolonged infatuation with her former husband.

But more important, Parker wrote another fine mystery novel in his inimitable style. It is a pretty racy subject, involving a couple of murders and how two sex-crazy women, twins married to two gangsters, are involved. At the same time, Sonny takes on a cult to try to rescue a young woman.

Written with the same aplomb and pithy dialogue as all Parker novels, "Split Image" is at the same time amusing and full of surprises. Parker, of course, died recently, but he left behind some new books to be enjoyed, as well as a legacy of more than 50 novels, of which this is of equal quality, and highly recommended.

From Publishers Weekly
Detective-journalist Jim Qwilleran and his prescient Siamese cats Koko and Yum Yum (The Cat Who Sang for the Birds, 1997) star in their 21st novel here, and while not quite as spry as ever, they're still the cat's meow. Qwill and his cats move from Pickax, where he's a newspaper columnist, to his beach house in Mooseville, probably on Lake Superior. Qwill rehashes gossip with locals and old friends, and observes Koko's odd behavior, which always forecasts an important event, although Qwill usually interprets the cat's clues retrospectively. Mooseville is abuzz with talk of the upscale restaurant opened by Floridians Owen and Ernestine Bowen, speculation about UFOs (Moose County is a sightings mecca) and puzzlement over the whereabouts of a missing backpacker, whose body Koko quickly uncovers in a sand dune. While fishing with a pal, Qwill sees Owen's boat anchored next to another; Qwill, his twitching mustache alerting him to skullduggery, suspects drug traffic. Shortly thereafter, Owen drowns. The solution to the one mystery that is resolved?that of Owen's death? comes as an anticlimax, while the mystery that's not cleared up?the fate of the backpacker?is chalked up by the locals to alien abduction. A skeptical Qwill grudgingly admits the possibility of aliens, cracking that cats, with their enigmatic behavior, may be aliens. With his 60 whiskers and gifts of perception, Koko is, as always, by far the most intelligent creature in the book. This isn't Braun's best, but her fans will adore it and only spoilsports will accuse her of, well, dogging it.

I'm going to be the lone dissenter here and say that this was certainly not one of my favorite Cat Who books. Actually, it was my least favorite by a long whisker.
I've read them all, most of them as soon as they come out, and haven't been disappointed until now. I don't think that Ms. Braun developed the plot sufficiently - or even at all.
It was as if there were many different ideas in Ms. Braun's head, so she wrote about all of them, but never to enough depth to get the reader interested. It felt like the entire book was the first two chapters. I kept thinking that we would go somewhere eventually, but then the story ended and we hadn't been anywhere.
This shall not deter me from reading the next book as soon as it is published. I do hope, however, that Ms. Braun gets back on track.

This book starts out slowly, but WHAT AN ENDING! There are the usual myriad of colorful characters and the usual unexpected plot twists. The ending leaves you breathless and a little creeped out. I don't know how Ms. Braun does it but she did it again! Bravo!! P.S. - I would be interested in hearing from other Koko and Yum Yum fans. Drop me a line!
