this book is hilarious

Don't take the title too seriously. Richard Cohen finds Jasper, his wife's dog, to be incredibly annoying. Cohen is married to the TV star Meredith Vieira and this is definitely HER dog. This dog barks a lot and his bark is very annoying. If the dog is in the bed before Richard is the dog will attack him to protect Meredith. Or so he claims. Too funny.

His wife actually encouraged Cohen to write this book and it is tongue in cheek hilarious. This book is hysterical. He does have some critiques of our out of hand pet culture with pampered pets, etc. That does bug him. He thinks it is wrong that we have Americans living in poverty while some pampered pooches are dining on filet mignon.

So there are serious themes here but mostly this is just good natured humor from a slightly twisted angle. But Jasper really does bug Cohen. Jasper runs around in circles yapping. Cohen takes out his pet peeves with this lovely book. Well done!

Hilarious--Finally a book for the rest of us...

My husband got me this after seeing the author on Imus, and I read it in one night. I love animals. But the way my husband worships our dog and she worships him really does drive me nuts. Jealousy? Maybe. But I know I have a lot of kindred spirits; people who find themselves in families or marriages where the dog is number 1; yes, number one. Richard gets it. And he's funny and light hearted. I also liked that the dog lover in question, his wife, who happens to be Meredith Vieira (whom I adore) is so game in this book--she is shameless in her love for 4 footed, winged and even insect friends--even chasing a fly out of the window so no one kills it!

The Irish peace process is at risk because of the actions of a heartbroken mother in Higgins's 29th thriller. American-born and married to a British lord, 60-ish Lady Helen Lang, the "nicest person you'll ever meet," has taken it upon herself to avenge the brutal death of her son, Peter, at the hands of the Sons of Erin, a fringe Irish-nationalist group led by a psychotic Vietnam vet and with operatives in Dublin, London and the U.S. Other members include gangster Tim Pat Ryan, IRA terrorist Jack Barry, U.S. Senator Michael Cohan and a mysterious member known only as the Connection, who is revealed to be a mole in the White House. With nothing more than an old government file, a modified computer and a .25 revolver, Lady Helen makes short work of most of these villains, managing at one point to knock off three of them in four paragraphs. Naturally, this wholesale violence attracts the attention of Higgins regulars Brigadier Charles Ferguson and Sean Dillon, who try to protect Senator Cohan during his upcoming visit to London. It's not giving away any surprises to reveal that eventually the bad guys get theirs, but there are precious few surprises here, and a bloodless, cartoonish quality to everything from the dialogue to the killings. Higgins's attempt at characterizations are unpersuasive at bestAto prove that she's really a decent sort, Lady Helen passes up a chance to kill Senator Cohan in favor of shooting a couple of muggersAand as usual, Sean Dillon's prowess as a gunman includes the ability to outshoot men who have already drawn a gun on him. As for the style, everything is fast, flat and featureless, like driving a car on cruise control in Kansas. Higgins's fans may be pleased, but other readers will probably want a more exciting ride. Sean Dillon, a former IRA gunman, now works for the British prime minister; Blake Johnson heads a secret office for the U.S. president. Both have their various talents severely tested while trying to stop a vengeful 66-year-old woman who is assassinating members of the Sons of Erin, including a senator, thereby threatening both governments. A mole in the White House frustrates Dillon's and Blake's efforts, but readers may be more frustrated by the shallow characterization and lifeless dialog. Nevertheless, the legions of Higgins fans will surely devour this as they have so many others, and libraries should be prepared.

When it comes to thrillers, Jack Higgins wrote the book. In fact, he wrote lots of them, and this is one of the best. The British and American superoperatives featured in The President's Daughter (1997) are now on the trail of whoever is executing American members of a rogue group called the Sons of Erin. The same shooter has also nailed a pair of would-be rapists. By the time they connect what at first appear to be unrelated killings, a leading London gangster, also in the group, has been taken out. Now all that remain of the Sons of Erin are Irish terrorist Jack Barry and a highly placed White House insider known only as the Connection. Although they realize the executioner is the very proper Lady Helen Lang, Boston-born widow of an English nobleman and mother of a tortured and murdered young officer, proving it is another matter. A very entertaining read. Budd Arthur

Is it time for Higgins to hang it up?

I have been reading Higgins off and on since "The Eagle Has Landed" was new, but not recently. I was stunned by this poor effort by a one time very good (but not great) writer. I'm even more surprised by how he was able to slip this one past so many of his obvious fans.
First, I need to dispell one myth here. This is not a fast read as some seem to believe. It is an incredibly short book. The hard cover version came in at just over 300 pages but is virtually double spaced. However, quantity would not matter if there was something of substance here. Unfortunately, the plot has more holes in it than swiss cheese.
Police work is largely a matter of tracking down leads and eliminating suspects. Thanks to computers, cross checking crimes and people's movements is not as problematic as it once was. Early in the story, it is discovered that someone is using an unusual calibar pistol to commit murders on both sides of the Atlantic. The authorities quickly (and correctly) guess that the killer must be using a private plane to get her gun in and out of the US and Britain. Yet they fail to do two things that would seem to be basic. They do not search their computers for other murders with the same, rare gun, and more significantly, they never check the flight plans of private aircraft to provide leads to the killer's identity. (Of course, if they had, this very short book would have been even shorter.)
The killer is identified in the first pages of the book. She is an elderly woman on a mission. She eventually provides a clue to her identity to her primary, intended victim who is the real villian of the book. He should have been able to snap his fingers and either know who she is or find out quickly. Instead, he spends page after page whining about who it could be. At the same time, the authorities are on to him, but he keeps slipping out of their traps, an apparent device to provide another few pages to this dismal excuse for a novel.
Higgins seems to be out of ideas. He has been pushing the same characters at us for decades. It might be time for him to consider resting on his laurels and living the good life.

Great work from a master

In 1996, American expatriate Lady Helen Lang and her beloved spouse Roger learn that the IRA killed their son Peter in a car bombing. One year later, a broken Roger also dies. Three years later, a dying Tony Emsworth mysteriously asks Helen to see him. Helen learns the truth behind the death of her son. An IRA splinter group (The Sons of Erin) and the Connection (an unknown person with ties to the White House) insured that Jack Barry and associates had insider information to torture and murder Peter.
The elderly Helen knows she too is dying. She decides to enact vengeance on the five members of The Sons of Erin, Barry, and the Connection. She begins her methodical killing of the seven individuals who destroyed her family. Though she gains much empathy from the American and British governments, they fear she may wreck the Irish peace process. Even though the espionage groups admire the assassin, they know they must stop the killer before the peace process becomes a victim too.
Jack Higgins is a name synonymous with the best action-packed stories. His latest tale, THE WHITE HOUSE CONNECTION, is a superb sequel to his wonderful novel, THE PRESIDENT'S DAUGHTER. The story line, woven around the Irish quest for peace, is cleverly designed and keeps readers' attention from first page to the exciting climax. The return cast from the first book remains interesting and hopefully will co-star in another tale. However, this novel clearly belongs to Helen of Boston, whose actions leave two governments teetering and the espionage crowd wondering if that's the face that burned the Sons of Erin?

Quick Read but Higgins Has Done Better

In The White House Connection, Jack Higgins, the prolific thriller writer has again reprised former IRA terrorist Sean Dillon, Brigadier Charles Ferguson,Hannah Bernstein and Blake Johnson in a fast paced story where the combined talents of British and American intelligence are used to thwart Irish terrorism.
In this continuation of the Sean Dillon saga, Higgins introduces an unlikely opponent for the combined US/UK intell team as they try to determine who is killing off the Sons of Erin and why. That killer, a woman, is as unlikely as any protagonist Higgins has ever used. Without revealing the person's identity (although the author does so early on), suffice it to say that the concept is improbable and unlikely. It seemed as if Higgins was really reaching for something with this book and the reader needs to suspend disbelief more than is usual for novels of this type.
In the process of leading the reader through the story, Higgins does his usual good job of providing history lessons right where they are needed to give readers the needed background to explain or amplify why he has written a character or scene a certain way. His intertwining of certain historical facts, especially those on Irish rebel history immediately explain why a Protestant Irish American would be a member of the IRA when everyone knows that the enmity between Catholics and Protestants in Ulster is legendary. When Higgins does this, he is at his best.
Another noticeable and at times very annoying feature of this book is that the dialogue Higgins gives the American characters is more British than American. In some cases it is more Irish than American. It almost seems as if Higgins has no knowledge whatever of American idiom and doesn't know how to write using our speech patterns. If you are a fan and doubt this style problem, go back and look closely for it. EVERYONE sounds British. Sean Dillon, the former IRA killer is also inconsistent in his speech patterns as well. Higgins' use of Irish idiom is overdone and also becomes annoying, mostly because it's so unnecessary.
Despite my minor annoyances and critiques here, overall, this is a very enjoyable read. The usual Higgins mastery of scene, atmosphere, characterization, tension and pacing all here. If the reader is familiar with the British cast of characters, this book reads quickly and well because we are all glad to be reunited with Sean Dillon and his boss, Brigadier Charles Ferguson.
Higgins also provides some really despicable opposition to the intelligence folks. One, named Jack Barry is so hoorible that most readers will probably be praying for his death. This is the kind of book one can easily read over a weekend or on the beach. Despite some minor and easily forgivable irritants, THE WHITE HOUSE CONNECTION is another successful and fast ride through the creative mind of Jack Higgins. If he had avoided overuse of British speech patterns and a more than usually unbelievable main character, I would have awarded this book 5 stars; so with these things in mind, I gave it 4 stars.
Fans of Higgins shouldn't miss this one and I recommend to all serious readers of espionage and police procedural novels.

The real villain is a Muslim extremist of the al-Qaeda variety: Hussein Rashid, aka the Hammer of God, and one of the most successful assassins alive, with 27 certified kills of American and British soldiers and Iraqi politicians. Hussein has his sights set on Charles Ferguson, head of British intelligence. It's a longstanding grudge, complicated by the recent kidnapping of Hussein's promised bride, his 13-year-old cousin Sara, who was earlier kidnapped by Hussein himself. The proceedings are complicated; it helps if the reader is a veteran of this long-running series. But it's all pure Higgins: almost every shot hits square between the eyes, and all the characters are hard lads indeed. (Jan.)

Very confusing to follow. Many character's names were too ...

Very confusing to follow. Many character's names were too similar so it was hard to keep track of who was doing what. Also, switches from one story line to the next was very abrupt making it hard to know where you were in the overall story. The book seemed to have been written in a rush without thought to how the reader would follow the stories within the overall story.

I have read just about all of Jack Higgins books and this could be the worst of them all!! Good plot but it appears that this was a hurry up and get it done book. Buy it used !

The 90s Were Totally Sweet

When I was given the chance to review "The Totally Sweet `90s: From Clear Cola to Furby and Grunge to `Whatever,' the Toys, Tastes, and Trends That Defined a Decade" I thought, sure the 90s were fun but do we really need a book devoted to them? I mean, it's so recent. Then it hit me. The 90s were actually quite a while ago. You know, I graduated from high school in the mid-nineties. You know what else? I'm getting seriously old. What the hell universe?

Where was I? Oh yeah, "The Totally Sweet `90s". Holy crap there was a lot of stuff that happened in the nineties and authors Gael Fashingbauer Cooper and Brian Bellmont manage to squeeze it all in to one book! Each entry includes a status to let you know what's going on with it now and also a fun fact. But I know what you're thinking, Rebecca, what's in that fun little book that you'll share?

Hmmmm, shall it be Pogs? Or perhaps "Clarissa Explains it All"? Maybe Zima? Possibly "The Adventures of Pete and Pete"? However, I've chosen perhaps my favorite thing......that's right readers, "Pop Up Video".

"The 1990s were all about multitasking, and music videos were no exception. Why just veg out in front of an ordinary video when you could watch a video paired with "Beavis and Butt-Head" commentary or one adorned with "Pop Up Video's" cartoony word bubbles?

The best pop-ups told you something hilarious like one on a Rick Astley video pointing out a dancer who never learned the steps, or confiding that the director and producer had a two-hour fight about whether Astley should roll up his sleeves. Awesomely, the writers of the pop-ups seemed to have the same bemused contempt for the music industry as the rest of us, never failing to point out where the producers cheaped out on a set or the singer was replaced with a stand in.

Watching "Pop Up Video" was like kicking back with your friend with your friend who worked as the third director's assistant and letting him dish about the scene where Meat Loaf fell off his chair or snark that Dexys Midnight Runners fired their drummer midway through the shoot. The pop-ups were like musical footnotes, but footnotes that were more often entertaining than the real text.

Status: "Pop Up Video" popped off the air for a time in 2002 but was revived by VH1 in 2011.

Fun Fact: "Pop Up Brady" gave the pop up treatment to old "Brady Bunch" episodes. One pop-up on the famed Kings' Island episode claims Robert Reed saved the cast's life by spotting a poorly mounted camera that would have flown off a roller coaster and possibly killed the actors."

With concise, but entertaining write ups, that include updates on where they are now and tidbits of trivia; "The Totally Sweet 90s" is a great party book. An amusing stroll down memory lane, reminding us of the good ("Clerks"), the bad ("Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), and the ugly (Gak).

Remembering the '90s!

What can you say about a decade that produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, PalmPilots, FARGO, the Ebola virus, CALVIN AND HOBBES, Jerry Springer, the McRib sandwich, Beanie Babies, Jell-o Jigglers, THE X-FILES, Nerf Guns, Thomas Kinkade art, the Spice Girls, Clear Colas and the George Foreman Grill? How about - Whatever!?! Gael Cooper and Brian Bellmont take the reader down memory lane in THE TOTALLY SWEET '90s, a 2013 Penguin Book release.

Cooper and Bellmont dish up the details on 190 "unforgettable and sometimes unforgivable...toys, tastes and trends that defined a decade." As might be expected, paging through TOTALLY SWEET '90S alternately produces laughs and groans at being reminded of Zima, Spuds Mackenize, the Macarena, Cassette Tapes, the Olsen twins, WHERE'S WALDO, Bungee Jumping, Fax Machines, FRIENDS, Jim Carrey, Roller Shoes, Grunge, BLUE'S CLUES, Tickle Me Elmo, Inline Skates, Bubble Tape, Troll Dolls and Martha Stewart. Yet, the tone of the book is affectionate and the authors treat their material with humor and insight.

Pop culture fans and trivia buffs will enjoy TOTALLY SWEET '90S. It will bring back some good memories and maybe some bad ones but, all in all, it's a fun trip. Recommended.

Are the 90s Worth Remembering?

Unlike other historical eras, the 20th century is mostly defined in decades. Whether it be the “roaring” 20s, the war-ravaged 40s or turbulent 60s, each 10 year cycle seemed to leave a definitive cultural footprint on the path of (American) life. I admit that I’m partial to the decades of my childhood/college years (70s and 80s) and still maintain a historical interest in previous decades, but, I simply can’t stand the 90s. THE TOTALLY SWEET 90s, while humorous and informative, seemed to validate my negative sentiment of a decade where style firmly overtook substance on almost every level (a trend that started in the 80s).

THE TOTALLY SWEET 90s is an A-to-Z encyclopedia that covers a myriad of iconic toys, foods, clothes and entertainment that defined a decade probably more memorable for its projected doomsday ending (Y2K) than the preceding 10 years. Each entry consists of a brief description in which the authors inject their own sarcastic take on the subject matter, followed by a current-day status update and an informative fun fact. The authors have provided a nicely organized 1990s time-capsule with plenty of research and several photos to jog your memories. I must credit the effort in developing such a comprehensive list that includes many forgotten/obscure items (Surge Soda and Gak) on top of the obvious (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). As expected, there will be those disappointed in the exclusion of some 90s-related item that only a handful of people care to remember, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a more comprehensive list (for crying out loud, even the “It’s Pat” movie is mentioned in the book). I do wish each and every entry included a photo.

Even though I enjoyed the light-hearted trip down memory lane, the ongoing list of mindless techno-junk (Tamagotchi and Furby), completely unnecessary food experiments (Doritos 3-D), music (“Macerena”) and fads (Beanie Babies) started to annoy as well as rationalize my disdain for the 90s. I was reminded me how mindless things started to get; when things began to matter more than people. A decade defined by “Riverdance”, Jim Carrey, the Spice Girls and Zubaz is something I’d rather forget. Sure, the decade wasn’t all bad, after all it did deliver “Seinfeld” and Snapple, but those gems are buried in a mountain of sludge that includes “MMMBop”, the Ebola Virus, OJ and the “boxers or briefs” debate.

While the 90s weren’t memorable for me, I find THE TOTALLY SWEET 90s to be a nice resource documenting that moment in time … for better or for worse.

Higgins picks up where his last novel (Dark Justice) featuring top-level British intelligence officer Gen. Charles Ferguson and his right-hand agent, former IRA enforcer Sean Dillon, left off, three weeks after a shootout killed Russian billionaire Josef Belov and his agents Yuri Ashimov and Maj. Greta Novikova. But hold on, not all of the above are really dead, and those left alive have sworn to destroy the general and his band of spies, who are also grieving for their colleague Supt. Hannah Bernstein, another casualty of the confrontation. President Vladimir Putin makes several appearances to give orders to various minions and Russian super-agent, Igor Levin. Their mission is to secure the now-deceased Belov's vast oil interests for the Russian government. With few double-crosses, deceptions or surprises of any sort, Higgins's plotting is not very inventive, and the final shootout, when it limps onstage, takes two short pages. The whole mise-en-scène feels dated, with little in the way of modern-day tradecraft or technology. Ferguson's admiration for his Russian enemies and bonhomie for Levin in particular seems plain silly: "Damn his eyes, I like the bastard. Who knows what the future holds?" The Russians themselves, however, are not too happy with Dillon for killing their man, billionaire and former KGB official Josef Belov, who was been responsible for "terrorism of all kinds." With the death of dealmaker Belov, Russia's prospects for a steady flow of oil out of Iraq ("since the vote for democracy") are threatened; the Kremlin must now resort to Plan B: using impersonator Max Zubin to stand in for Belov to maintain some stability in the Russia-Iraq connection until a new, improved Plan A emerges. This is pretty standard Jack Higgins: wooden characters and far-flung if barely credible locales, but enough plot and action to keep his many fans by his side. Alan Moores

The Quality Is Gone

In my previous reviews of Dark Justice and Bad Company, I wrote that Jack Higgins was decending into mediocrity. If Without Mercy had been a first novel, it would never have been published. I wrote earlier that the last three books read as though Higgins has employed a ghost writer to fill in the blanks of his plot line. The Higgins of earlier, tightly woven novels is gone. The style of this latest effort is sophomoric; two or three page vignetts jumping from theme to theme and place to place. Dillon has become less Irish, Ferguson less commanding, Billy and Harry Salter have become caricatures, the IRA has become populated with inept senior citizens, and the Russians are foiled by the most transparent slight of hand maneuver. Gone or worth adversaries like the Rashids or Grace Browning. Given the first two chapters of this book, the old Sean Dillon would have handed his warrant card to Ferguson and began a one man vendetta,which Ferguson could not condone but would understand. The Sean Dillon of Without Mercy is almost unrecognizable from the Dillon of Thunder Point or Edge of Danger. This Dillon would not have lasted two days in Belfast.

This book is not worth the investment of either time or money.

Up to Jack Higgins usual standards. Unfortunately he kills off Superintendant Hannah Bernstein and I rather liked her. Sean Dillon remains alive and well. Very good reading for Jack Higgins fans

Don't be deceived by the blockbuster size of W.E.B. Griffin's third installment in the Honor Bound series. Secret Honor is an intricate book that reveals a remarkable attentiveness to historical detail and characterization. It is also a top-notch thriller set in Griffin's quasi-fictional version of WWII.

The plot is woven with so many threads, all of them worthwhile, that it actually feels more like a chronicle than a novel, but the central story takes up the continuing adventures of OSS agent Cletus Frade. Frade, a U.S. Marine whose father was almost the president of Argentina, was raised in Texas and now uses his father's special status in Argentine society to penetrate Nazi plans for South America. This time, however, Frade is not so much fighting the Nazis as supporting them. While one group, Himmler among them, is secretly stashing funds in Argentina to prepare for an escape when the Reich finally crumbles, a second group, including a German general and his son, are actually plotting to assassinate Hitler. Meanwhile, the OSS is on the verge of ex-communicating Frade, given his unwillingness to reveal the identity of the son, code-named "Galahad."

The details are what make this book: Cletus Frade is imprinted on the mind, clad in grease-stained khaki trousers, spouting Spanish-Texan four-letter epithets, and sporting cowboy boots as he repairs his father's ravaged old Horch touring sedan at Estancia San Pedro y San Pablo. Particularly engaging is Griffin's account of Argentine upper-strata social "politics," as Father Welner steers Cletus into his inevitable marriage. Reading Secret Honor, one enters many vividly drawn places--from Nazi secret meetings to Argentine estates--that bring this pivotal era to life. This third entry in the military/espionage Honor Bound series, focusing on the Argentine-German connection during WWII, will intrigue newcomers and have Griffin's long-time fans queuing up for the next installment. In 1943, the Nazi-ordered assassination of Jorge Frade, the anti-Axis president of Argentina, has left the country in a tense mood, which is exacerbated by the murder of two Nazi officers during a night beach landing, part of the top-secret Nazi Operation Phoenix. The aborted mission was crucial to a plan to free the Argentine-interned crew of the Nazi ship Graf Spee, but it turns out that the slain officers had also extorted ransom money from Jews in concentration camps and arranged for their passage to Argentina--without the Reich's knowledge. Cletus Frade, the 24-year-old American-reared son of the slain president, has returned to Argentina as heir to his father's vast estates and financial holdings. But Cletus is also an OSS (CIA precursor) agent, and a chance meeting with Major Hans-Peter von Wachstein, a Nazi pilot attached to the German embassy, results in their friendship. Peter feeds secrets to Cletus in exchange for help in moving Peter's family's funds to Argentina, where they hope to live after the war that he and his father (a close aide to the Fuhrer) believe is wrong and already lost. When Himmler launches an investigation to find the embassy spy who scuttled Operation Phoenix, Cletus struggles to protect Peter's identity and deal with the rising power of pro-Axis Juan Peron. Griffin adroitly shifts among German, American and Argentinian cultural milieux and fills the plot with believable romance, intrigue and diplomatic fencing, while capturing the horrors of war and the crucial role of intelligence agents. He nicely explains the Reich's need for Argentina as safe harbor to replenish its U-boats and to stash funds for postwar Nazi emigration. The horrors of war done graphically

As with all Griffin books, this one is well written, is constantly moving between different aspects of the German/Argentine/US conflict and it showcased more of the personal backgrounds of his beloved characters. I personally could have done with a shorter version and just the bare facts. It is very dark, very sad, very frustrating and very graphic. I know about the bad stuff that happens in war and with the author's ability to create visual images in the mind, this was really heartbreaking for me to read. If the reader found chainsaw massacre thrilling, then this is more the style.

Unworthy Characterizations

Griffin has helped me spend much of my time learning more about military history from many perspectives, countries, branches of service, and battles. That is to say that I think I've read if not all, then most all of his books in each series: it's been kind of hard to keep up.
A recurring theme that runs throughout his books is his disdain for enlisted members of the military or their equivalent in the police series. If an enlisted man is worth his weight, then he does the right thing and becomes an officer. The only exceptions to this are the Argentine retired senior sergeants who gruarded the Senior Frade and now guard Cletus. I'm disappointed because some of the finest and most courageous men I've known were Corporals and Sergeants and enlisted ratings in the Navy and Coast Guard. There never has been a time when all the men in the military or police could all be officers: men and women were needed in the trenches. So, Mr. Griffin, how about a story where the enlisted folks succeed mightly, not by becoming officers, but by being the honorable, hard-working, and dedicated individuals they were.

I love the D'Adamo series. I am currently in medical school and the more I learn about how things work, the more his information makes sense. I still wish all the actual research result were more readily available. This book does a great job customizing the diet to fit your personal type. If you don't believe in the body or blood type idea then it is still a great book. The foods recommended a great and healthy as well as the exercise recommendations. Either way, it will be beneficial.

Must have info for women with history of heart disease in the family!

I have been eating for my blood type for 2 months and have had AMAZING results....allergy and asthma improvement, weight loss, more energy, etc. As to heart disease prevention - it is a huge and neglected health concern for women - the suggestions in this little tome all lead to a healthier lifestyle!

Nothing New for Me

For me, I found the diet to be more limiting than what I currently follow and I am pretty limited. I have CVD, complete with a single graft bypass 2 years ago. Thanks parents. If it causes anyone to pay more attention to their heart health and it helps without harming, go for it! I found the heart health educational portion repetitive. I didn't get what I wanted but doesn't mean others won't.

The QBQ methodology aims to replace plaintive, querulous thoughts of "Why is this happening to me?" and "When will others do things right?" with more constructive questions like "What can I do to contribute?" This shift in perspective, he contends, short-circuits the unhelpful behaviors of blaming, complaining, procrastinating and "thinking like a victim," and empowers people to solve problems themselves instead of whining about them. The ethos of personal accountability, he continues, reinforces other virtuous habits, including learning, creativity, service and trust, and imbues organizations with a cheerful, cooperative, can-do spirit. Transformational Shift

Flipping the switch is a very enjoyable read in which the author John Miller is basically asking the question: Would you rather be part of the problem or the solution? To be part of the solution, all it takes, according to him, is a shift in perspective. Instead of asking "why me?" switch to "what can I do?". It is a simple shift, which takes you from the victim's chair into the driver's seat and allows you to experience satisfaction and transformation in all areas of your life.

In this respect the book reminded me very much of the work of Ariel and Shya Kane Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation , How To Create a Magical Relationship and Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment. The Kanes also present the idea that a shift in perspective can transform your life instantaneously and take you from the realm of working on yourself and thinking, to the realm of being yourself and being enlightened. Instantaneous Transformation is accessible when you flip the switch and choose to be present in the moment rather than lost in your thoughts.

I highly recommend both the work of John Miller and Ariel and Shya Kane to anybody looking to live a "bright" life!

A clear path to personal accountability-- no question about it

If you like your self-help advice in a quick-to-read, easy-to-digest format, you'll enjoy this sequel to the book, QBQ! The Question Behind the Question. In his first book, author John G. Miller explained that instead of whining, "Why does everything bad happen to me?" you should take responsibility and ask yourself, "What can I do to improve my situation?" That's the QBQ, and asking it stops you from blaming and complaining, and empowers you to find your own solutions. In this book, Miller takes personal accountability up a notch, and teaches you how to improve your relationships at home and at work by adopting the five "Advantage Principles: learning, ownership, creativity, service and trust." At times, the book can get a bit preachy, but the examples are entertaining and the advice is simple, clear and solid. If you're looking for a fast shot of effective, feel-good self-help advice, we recommend Miller's accessible program. Or to pose the question his way: if your QBQ is, "What can I read to learn how to solve my own problems?" this book is your answer.

Flip the switch... be effective and efficient in how you live and work

Flipping the Switch further develops author John Miller's motivational "the question behind the question" philosophy.

I have not read QBQ, his first book. I became acquainted with Mr. Miller by reading Flipping the Switch. It is intriguing enough that I look forward to tracking down that first book.

Miller wants his readers to be efficient and effective in their daily lives, forgoing the blaming "who" and "why" type questions about life, love, happiness, and productivity for the "how" and "what" type questions. Instead of "Why me," he asks the reader to explore the "How can I" philosophy, as in:

"What can I do to solve this problem?"

"How can I contribute?"

Miller states that the blame game is not productive. Instead, he encourages his readers to look for the positive, the changeable, and the possible.

I thought he did a nice job reviewing the contents of his first book, QBQ, in Chapter 2. This makes Flipping the Switch readable without having read his first book.

My chief complaint is that it is too short for a hardback book (129 pages)! Hopefully, future editions will combine these two books into one (128 + 129 = a book with 257 pages, a much more appropriate length). At some point, as his philosophy is practiced, Miller will have to document real changes in people and businesses. Let's hear the success stories!
