A riveting bio from a goofy (and gutsy) woman

Ah, Goldie, gotta love her! I grew up watching Goldie Hawn on Laugh-in and then in movies- everything from Butterflies are Free (where her hippie, dippy side got to cut loose) to Private Benjamin.

All along, she seemed both funny and gutsy but what REALLY got me to buy this book was a television profile where Goldie spoke of a long battle with depression and insecurity. Her longtime companion, Kurt Russell, and their children (some from previous marriages) also appeared and I realized that there might be more depth and complexity to this woman than I got from the fleeting images on screen.

Thankfully, I was right. This book was a joy to read, revealing the depth, intellect and pure gutsiness that Goldie Hawn possesses. She was brave enough to reveal the insecurities and pain that she felt during some of her early years in show biz as well as the joy she felt as she discovered Buddhism, met Russell, gave birth to her children - and so much more. Written with a unique style (would you expect anything else from Hawn?) the reader will find both entertainment and inspiration within this one.

The 1834 publication of his memoir, A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett-by Himself, one of the first autobiographies of its kind, went through seven printings, and sent Crockett on the first-ever book tour across the Eastern seaboard.

At heart, Crockett was unassuming and down-to-earth, obstinate and independent to a fault. In a beautifully descriptive narrative, American Legend takes readers from Crockett's childhood hardships, near-death experiences, and meager education through his unlikely rise to Congress. Though his death at the Alamo on March 6, 1836, only added to his considerable fame and notoriety, the common David Crockett emerges here as never before: a rugged individual, an American original, and an enduring symbol of the American frontier.

Levy presents a sympathetic but unremarkable biography of the legendary frontiersman in colloquial if occasionally florid prose (an election loss "burned into Crockett like a brand searing a cow's flank"). Those whose image of Crockett was formed by the cultishly successful Disney treatment will find much that is familiar: the Indian fighter with Andrew Jackson, the congressmen from Tennessee and, finally, the Texas patriot who died defending the Alamo. But Levy (Echoes on Rimrock: In Pursuit of the Chukar Partridge) offers more (although not a lot more) in the way of background and complexity, and is willing to expose some of Crockett's deficiencies without making judgments: Crockett clearly indulged his wanderlust at the expense of his wife, a strong figure in her own right, and was, for a variety of reasons, an ineffective, bumbling politician. But despite his faults, readers will find Crockett likable and talented. In Levy's view, Crockett's abilities were expansive, and he opines that Crockett's bestselling 1834 autobiography "prefigures by some fifty years the literary genre of 'realism,' with nothing remotely like it" until Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. And Crockett's falling out with President Jackson over, in part, Jackson's brutal Indian Removal Act of 1830 is to the frontiersman's credit. B&w illus. (Jan.)

Crockett was born in 1786 in Tennessee and died at the Alamo in 1836. In his brief lifetime, he became a folk hero, a three-time congressman, and a potential presidential contender. In this meticulously researched book, Levy chronicles Crockett's remarkable rise to fame. For most of the first half of his life, Crockett lived from day to day, driven by the barest necessities of food, clothing, and shelter. He married and then rented a small farm, and the couple had two sons and a daughter; his wife died from complications after their daughter's birth. He fought in the War of 1812 against Great Britain and later became a magistrate, the first step in his career in public life. In the end, as Levy has it, Crockett transcended the facts of his life to become an enduring symbol of possibility, remembered not for his deeds or his greatness, but for the tenacity of his spirit. Enjoyable, and more-than-adequate peek at a pioneer...

I liked this book. Despite the presence of numerous footnotes and a bibliography, it is a "popular" text rather than a "scholarly" one. I found it a quick and compelling read, but then I've been a Crockett fan since I was 11 back in 1955 (or was I a Fess Parker fan? No, it was Crockett, as it turns out.) I had not read any full-length bios of the man, although the recent book "Three Roads to the Alamo" deals extensively with Crockett, Jim Bowie and William B. Travis. I enjoyed Billy Bob Thornton's performance as Davy in the recent big-budget Alamo movie, and in fact, was one of the few who liked the film as a whole. If you saw that movie, you'll see a lot of Thornton in this book's depiction of Crockett. Davy comes off as a pretty decent man, consistently trying to live his principles in a tough life situation. Certainly, he seems more admirable overall than Bowie or Travis, although I was suprised to learn that Davy was even a slave-owner briefly, and sold one of the three slaves inherited by his second wife in order to pay his debts. Bowie, of course, was an active slave-trader, and Travis even brought his personal slave to the Alamo. But Crockett was brave throughout his life, broke throughout his life, uneducated but talented, likeable and outgoing, a political failure and yet a celebrity. He did not intend, upon traveling to Texas in late 1834, to end up dead at the Alamo. Once there, he had a couple of weeks during which he could have left. By choosing to remain, he became an enduring symbol of courage. If that kind of life appeals to you, spend a week or so reading "American Legend." You'll be glad you did.

intriguing biography

For us boomers raised on the remarkable 1950s Disney production, AMERICAN LEGEND substantiates much of the Davy Crocket TV shows, but also augments it with insight into how much more complex a person the frontier legend was regardless of Buddy Ebson's summarizing ballad. Buddy Levy fills much of the gaps including mildly negative commentary. For instance, there is insight into Crockett's two wives, five children and four step-children in which the hero's itchy feet kept him on the road a lot; both his strong spouses took care of the home front with iron wills, but the hero was not home that often (regardless of offspring count). Interesting to this reviewer's memory of the Disney show has Mr. Crocket going to Washington as a success story, but the biographer paints a more balanced picture of a somewhat failed politician. However, the most interesting new items (at least to me) is Crockett wrote a bestselling autobiography in which he barnstormed the country selling it and his dispute with his former Commander in the Creek War President Jackson over the abusive Indian Removal Act of 1830. This is an intriguing look at an individual who in the first half of the nineteenth century was a living legend that authenticates how accurate the Disney portrayal was; one worth reading and the other worth watching

A legend in his time and ours

Once you read this, you'll understand that Davy Crockett was not a man of much accomplishment. Like celebrities of today, he was famous for being famous. In fact, he was probably America's first media star.

It's amazing that there were so many bears in TN, maybe he killed them all. While he made his name as a hunter and woodsman, he tried a number of schemes, but was not a successful entrepreneur. He left his wife with children (his and theirs), drudge work and ever present debt while he turned his charm and his gregarious nature into a political career.

He was a one issue populist when he was elected to Congress, but couldn't get much movement on that issue. His fellow Tennesseean was President. Andrew Jackson, trying to build a following among the common men, should have been a supporter of squatters' rights to homestead (if this is an accurate summary of the concept). Crockett knew Jackson from the Indian Wars, and did not have much respect (but Crockett's war record is dubious... not to say Jackson's isn't either) for him. Levy touches on the rancour between these two men, but not much on their political differences. He does recount how Crockett is indulged by Biddle, Jackson's archenemy.

In the end Crockett, with a rifle, a gift of his rich friends, that he names for his wife, goes off to TX. He's a friend of Sam Houston who has inspired him about opportunities in what will surely be a US state. They both exhibit what we, today, might call alcoholic behavior. We know the end of this story.

I picked up this book, hoping to learn more about the Jackson era and I did, but not in the way I expected. There was almost nothing about the big issues of the day: Jackson's war on the bank/Biddle and slavery/abolishionism. This book, though, gives you a flavor for the frontier, and the emergence of an individual... who would never achieve acclaim in French salons or pre-Victorian (or pre-Beatles for that matter) England. Ben Franklin another early American autobiographer and celebrity, had a uniquely American persona that still could dazzle European courts. Europeans could understand Franklin.

But, Davy Crockett was too new... too flawed... too outrageously common... too proud of hunting to feed his family (& not for sport)... too accepting of his station (but willing to take risks to better his financial condition)... too unaware of/unconcered about dukes and earls... to be understood anywhere else in his time but in the fledging nation. He is and was truly an American original.

A Year on the Alternate-Day Diet (an ongoing review)

This is an ongoing review which I updated frequently for over a year, monitoring my progress, starting on Jan 18, 2010. The blog-like updates follow this summary.

The Alternate-Day Diet (ADD for short) is the best plan I've found thus far for quick weight loss (I lost 43 lbs on it in six months). It truly changed my life, and I'm forever grateful for that. I was in better health, in better shape, better-looking, more confident, more social, and more physically active than I had been in decades. My four-star rating is a tribute to how it helped me achieve those changes. This diet is effective and *relatively* easy considering how drastically it restricts calories.

But make no mistake, this is a starvation diet which cuts your average caloric intake in half! It can be difficult or impossible for active people to sustain for the long term, and it slowed down my metabolism like other quick weight-loss diets. After six months, it quickly became a study in frustration, with no lasting additional weight loss. However, it's possible that less active people will find it easier than I did.

So do I recommend it? It's not that simple. You'll have to make your own decision. These are some pro and cons.

Pros:
1. It works! You can definitely expect to experience dramatic weight loss, and to sustain it for several months.
2. No foods are forbidden. After a two-week introductory period, only calories are restricted, and only every other day. You can literally have your cake and eat it, too.
3. Results come quickly, so you get positive reinforcement quickly and often.
4. No changes are required in your shopping, but you'll save money by eating less.
5. Your body will not have to adjust to a major shift in food types.
6. It's easy to recover from a slip-up, at least in the first few months. Just make the next day a "down" (low-calorie) day. In case of an extended departure, just restart from the beginning.
7. There's no carb-/fat-/protein-juggling nonsense. No macro-nutrients are demonized or deified.
8. Light exercise is part of the program (although it's not emphasized enough).
9. As a more palatable form of caloric restriction, this diet may have longevity and health benefits beyond mere weight loss.

Cons:
1. It takes discipline and planning. Read the book carefully and give yourself a week or so to prepare yourself and build a support network before starting. It will be a *major* shift in an important part of your lifestyle.
2. Social occasions, especially unexpected ones, will pose challenges.
3. Hunger happens. After the first few days it's not bad, and it becomes easier as you progress, but on down days, especially in the evening, you will need to be prepared.
4. The healthiness of the diet is up to the you. Many people will find themselves desiring and eating healthier foods, but it is possible to remain on the SAD (Standard American Diet), and not improve your actual nutrition.
5. Heavy exercisers may find it very difficult if their caloric needs require day-to-day satisfaction.
6. You do have to count calories on the down days.
7. Diet fatigue may become a serious or even insurmountable problem after several months, although some people have kept with it for years.
8. Leaving it may lead to *quick* weight regain. There is no "exit strategy"; the maintenance plan is to stay on a less-extreme version of it for the rest of your life.
9. It slowed my metabolism. (Dr. Johnson points to a study that indicates ADD doesn't slow metabolism, but that study was for 3 weeks only.

I was very intrigued by this plan when I saw it, since I have been aware of the benefits of calorie restriction; on the other hand, calorie restriction always seemed way too--well, restrictive to me. This seems doable, and I'm encouraged by the testimonials of the reviewers who say they've been on the plan for two years or more.

I desperately need to lose weight, so I'm giving it a shot. One thing to be aware of as I start this is that I'm training for a half-marathon in March. So far, I haven't lost any weight since I began training (actually, I've gained a few pounds), so I'm really looking to the diet to help me with weight loss.

It's been two weeks, and I'm glad to be able to move out of the "shakes only" phase. I did bend the rules there a bit, eating protein bars more than shakes, and sometimes a bit a dried fruit as well, although I was careful not to go over my 500-calorie limit. Hunger wasn't too bad a problem, except late at night a couple of times. I didn't notice any problem with sleeplessness as some reviewers did. My main complaint has been "Atkins burps" on my low days... (if you've done the Atkins diet, you know what I mean). I'm thinking that that will pass as I begin eating real food on the low days. As far running goes, I've been sidelined with an Achilles injury, so that hasn't had anything to do with my weight loss.

My lowest weight in about five years. Early last month, I wrecked several short days in a row due to unexpected food--birthdays at work, a Superbowl party, etc. so I've really been doing this for 5 wks. now instead of 6. Now if I fall off the wagon on a low day, I just start alternating again the next day. Haven't used the recipes much... on low days I tend to do a protein bar, a bag of microwave popcorn and a piece or two of fruit. Not too hungry if I don't stay up too late. My face is showing the weight loss most, and I'm seeing a younger man in my mirror. This month I should get below 203 lbs--out of obese territory. I'm excited about this. Also, I dropped out of this month's half-marathon, I'll start training soon for a later one.

My lowest weight in seven years. And 75% of what I've lost has been fat! My pants are getting baggy, though I'm reluctant to buy new ones this far from my goal. I'm running again, and occasionally working with light weights. This is part of the plan, though I had actually forgotten it (see pp. 92-100). My difficulty is unexpected social occasions, which I encountered even more of this month. That part isn't easy, but this plan is worth it. This is the good "ADD"!

***** Special update, April 17, 2010 ***** Yesterday I weighed in 202.5 lbs (92 kg), a BMI of 29.9. I am no longer obese! The pounds lost were exactly 10% of my starting weight; it seems 10% is a common "plateau" zone. This may be why it took longer to reach than I expected. I've also added Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) to my updates, and my main goal for now is to lower my WHtR to 49% (34in waist). Four inches down, Eight more to go!

Finally crossed the 200-pound mark! I've been looking forward to this moment for years! Other good news: I'm burning fat faster, I ran in a 5K race, and overall, the diet is much easier--didn't blow any down days this month, although I have felt a bit of hunger. Weight loss has been a bit slower, probably due to stress and my body's adaptation to the new activity and calorie levels. My plan is to keep with it, watch the short days, drink more water, and get more sleep.

Not bad, considering I had stalled in early May, had a knee injury that sidelined me for a while, fell off the diet for 2 1/2 weeks and *gained* weight, just got back on a week ago, and still lost overall!

The hunger was becoming way too much on down days, so a week ago, I decided to *increase* my down-days to 800 cal, and I was able to return to running as well. Since then, the diet is easy again! My new DD calorie level is still 25-30% of my up day intake; both have increased because my activity level is much higher now. (running 10-17 mi/wk)

Since the basis of the diet is to keep the body guessing, I wonder if a short departure from it every few months might actually be helpful. This week my progress has been like when I first began it. In the past, a slip like this would have discouraged me, but now I'm more determined than ever

36 pounds down, and less than 5 inches to go! I had to bite the bullet and buy some new pants, even though I know I'll be doing that again in a few months. Social events caused some trouble with down days this month, but overall they're much easier now. I'm feeling very good physically. I ran in an 8K, and I'm still training for the half-marathon.

I've now lost 43 lbs, and I'm within 13 lbs of BMI 25 -- end of the overweight zone. For two weeks I was on vacation in Spain, and I continued to lose weight there, although I certainly wasn't trying to follow the diet. (I believe the reasons were almost constant walking, and that I only ate when I was hungry. I completely fell out of the meal structure of the workaday world.) At any rate, I'm back at work, back in the States, back on the plan. Looking forward to continuing the weight loss, and running the half-marathon next month!

I finally ran my half-marathon two days ago. Eleven months ago I was a couch potato--but then I took a 30-minute walk with the goal of working up to long-distance running, and my life has changed much for the better!

However, I had a great deal of difficulty adhering to the diet last month, and it shows, as I *gained* two pounds. If anyone had any doubt that it was the diet and not my running that was behind the weight loss, this is the proof. What went wrong? Mostly a lack of planning and perseverance. Instead of bringing my own food to work on down days, for instance, it was easy to accept invitations to eat out, with the thought that I could "run it off" later. I've come too far to slack off now--I know this plan works and I'm back on it.

Although I lost 5 lbs. last month, I'm having extreme difficulty with the diet, and I'm wondering if ADD is a viable long-term solution for truly active people. I was just leaving a sedentary lifestyle when I started it, but now I'm a long-distance runner, and things have changed. Hunger management at this activity level is rough; I don't think many jocks are on this plan ... right now, *any* scheduled caloric restriction is simply odious to me.... Regardless of whether I stay with ADD or not, I am forever grateful to Dr. Johnson for helping me change my life, and I'll let you know what happens!

This is embarrassing, but I just realized what the problem is. During the last 3 months I've been so obsessed with nutrition, I've ignored calories completely. I've assumed (wrongly!) that the days on which I eat whole foods have been low on calories, but it just isn't so. I despise counting calories, but ADD requires a good estimate of them on the down days. Now that I know what the problem is, it's an easy fix!

I'm training now for a marathon in March, but I'm trying to run smarter, not harder.

Reboot successful! I learned that if you get off track, just get back on! I went back to protein shakes, although sometimes I mixed them into espresso drinks, which helped a lot with the taste. I found the EAS brand to be fairly palatable and without too many weird chemicals. Occasionally I also had a few nuts or low-fat cottage cheese. Down day calories: usually ~650 or less. it really seemed a lot easier this time around. it's going to be great losing weight over the holidays, instead of gaining. 51 lbs down! I'm really happy about that! Just one more shakes-based down day left, and then start incorporating more real food.

I may have gone as far as I can with this. I've only lost 5-8 lbs. in the last five months, no change in body composition. I know I haven't followed it well since August, but that's the problem: long-term sustainability, the very reason I began this blog. I can no longer bear eating as a series of down days and up days; for short periods, it still works, and I'm not gaining anything back. I now have a tool that will help me maintain this loss, I pray, forever.

I've changed my mind about not having a weight goal; I really want to get to 145-155 lbs. I've fallen in love with running, and running is so much more enjoyable LIGHTER. I reached and held that weight before as an adult, and loved it.

I may well stop trying to follow ADD soon. I'll let you know. At any rate, this diet has been one of the most helpful and life-changing things I've ever discovered. It was a big part of what made 2010 one of the best years of my life.

I really thought the last post was going to be my final update--I didn't follow ADD last month, and tried to avoid regaining via common-sense approaches like journaling and mindful eating. It didn't work, so I'm rebooting ADD today. I haven't found a way to keep the weight off w/o ADD alternation. There's a positive aspect here (ADD works), but also a negative: (it's like the Hotel California: you can never leave). I've downgraded my rating to 4 stars, because it's difficult to sustain, and doing it seems to have slowed metabolism, such that stopping it leads to nearly instant regaining, even with significant exercise.

Dr. Johnson doesn't provide an "exit strategy" in his book, and the resveratrol pills on his website don't fill me with confidence; his picture shows that he's clearly overweight himself. During this reboot, I'll also be seeking a more sustainable plan to take me to the next level, and keep the weight off for life.

My planned reboot last week didn't "take." I can't stick with it now, even for a day. I'm simply sick of alternate-day starvation. As much as I credit it for how much it's helped me, I feel it drastically slowed my metabolism, which I need to rebuild now. I will not return to it.

Brilliant concept in a form essential for convincing the skeptical!

I have been following this lifestyle for over two years since discovering it online, and I consider it utterly revolutionary; I plan to do it for the rest of my life and I believe that everyone (who is medically capable) should do so as well. Few things have changed my life as dramatically as this diet. I moderate an online community with over 300 members and the overwhelming majority agree with me.

In addition to the obvious benefit of achieving and maintaining a slender figure, this diet can improve inflammatory disorders (arthritis, asthma, tendonitis, allergies), expand cognition, increase your energy levels, reduce your risk of developing cancer, and extend your life (while maintaining a youthful state). It's also an incredibly easy diet to follow and stick to, which is rare when it comes to weight-loss inducing diets. My personal benefits include weight loss, body fat reduction and redistribution (especially targeted loss of abdominal fat), reduced environmental allergy symptoms, complete remission of my crippling tendonitis, more energy & less need for sleep, improved exercise strength & endurance, and most notably, enhanced cognition. I'm now able to fully comprehend material, such as advanced topics in physics, that I formerly failed to grasp despite numerous attempts, and I can juggle more ideas and trains of thought in my mind at at time.

The book is reasonably well-written and generally enjoyable and easy to read. I feel that Dr. Johnson makes good use of evidence (and does not dumb down the data), and only rarely makes unfounded or exaggerated statements. I would certainly recommend this book for people who are not swayed by the general concept and online information alone, as they will almost definitely consider an actual BOOK by an actual MEDICAL DOCTOR more seriously. In that vein, it would make a great gift, and you can make sure the giftee has read the book by asking their opinion on the diet. However, the book is not necessary to do the diet (which is so inherently simple) - though it may be quite helpful for some - as essential information can be found online.

Predictably, the book does focus on weight loss, despite discussing the numerous other health benefits of the diet. Dr. Johnson dubs the major gene that the diet activates (SIRT1) the 'skinny gene' and I find this a bit gimmicky. I realize that many people (myself included) are almost obsessively interested in being slim, but I truly think the other health benefits are much more interesting and worthwhile. Also, people who are happy with their weight may be turned off by what they perceive to be a weight-loss oriented 'diet', as opposed to an eating pattern that will revolutionize their lives both physically and mentally.

A significant portion of the book goes into general nutrition and exercise information, and while it's mostly solid enough, I think there are better books for such principles. For example, I disagree with Dr. J's assessment of red meat, cholesterol, and saturated fats - all things I consider perfectly healthy and woefully demonized in the public eye. I appreciate that the diet alone will not gain one optimal health - and it does not exist in a vacuum - even though one can lose weight and improve one's health by doing nothing else, exercise and actual food consumption still matter. But again - there are better sources for both, and Dr. J does acknowledge this to an extent.

The down day meal plans (30 days of such days!) suck, frankly. Total calories average about 600, which is above 20% of the recommended caloric intake for much of the population. I feel that 20% is too high anyway as I personally stick to near-complete fasting, so nearing 35% is even worse! The recipes, on the other hand, are actually pretty decent. Some of them sound quite tasty and creative, and many of them are under 200 cals/serving. Standalone or for up days, they could indeed be useful. Ones which caught my eye: Creamy Oats and Berries, Lemony Hummus, Mixed Greens Tossed with Noodles, Chicken with Pineapple, Bell Peppers, and Onions, Sesame-Crusted Baked Chicken Breasts on Napa Cabbage, Turkey-Stuffed Bell Peppers with an Italian Accent, and Zucchini Ribbons with Tomato Sauce. The recipe section also piqued my interest in Kojac (an Asian yam high in soluble fiber which slows sugar absorption and promotes fullness) and Shirataki noodles (made of tofu and kojac, they average 40 calories/8 oz), both of which I plan to explore.

As I said initially, while the book may not be necessary in order to do the diet, it can be a useful tool and as an alternate-day eating fanatic and health-obsessed scientist, I learned many interesting tidbits reading the book. I imagine that anyone seriously contemplating the diet as a permanent lifestyle choice will want to have read this.

Dr. Johnson's Alternate Day Diet is My Miracle!

Last year I lost the same 10lbs, over and over and over until I found the Alternate Day Diet!

I've been following this way of eating AKA: JUDDD (Johnsons Up Day Down Day) since the beginning of December 2010 and it's been a miracle for me. I've lost 30lbs (as of May 27th) and I feel great! This is not to say it's easy. The calorie restricted days are difficult at times. The difference here, is you only have to "diet" every other day! It's perfect for me. I have learned a lot about eating according to calories, something I have never done before. I'm in touch with my body now, I know the difference between hunger and boredom. I also use this in conjunction with lower carb eating (50-100 gm) and it works very well.

Another wonderful aspect of the plan is maintenance. By cutting back your down days (to two a week) you should be able to easily maintain your weight loss, and keep any small gains under control by throwing in an extra down day to your maintenance schedule. Being able to maintain your weight loss is a huge issue for many people. Yo Yo dieting is not healthy. This diet offers a reasonable maintenance plan to help keep the pounds truly gone.

The most compelling reason for me to continue on The Alternate Day Diet, is how good I feel. I sleep really well, digestion problems are gone, and my asthma symptoms have improved greatly. This is something I've read about with the alternate calorie diet but didn't think it would really make a difference. I was wrong, it does! I plan on eating this way until I lose all the weight I want, then I'll transition to the maintenance phase and keep it off! I would recommend this to anyone who has been struggling with "normal" calorie reduction diets or find that their low carb diets are too high in calories to work well for them.

*Please note: After 6 months on the diet I have stopped worrying about low carb and I've started eating whatever I think I want on my regular days. Not to say that I go crazy, but still... I'm losing weight and feeling amazing. It feels like my body has adjusted to the every other day calorie restriction and I'm feeling the lifestyle change that I've never been able to sustain in the past. Even after a vacation away from home, I lost two pounds! Any diet takes commitment, but this one has been so easy to follow for me.

*After 9 months of following the Alternate Calorie Diet, I've lost 40lbs. I've gone from a 22 size pants to a newly purchased size 16! My blood sugar is no longer considered pre-diabetes, I've been taken off one of my two hypertension medications. I feel fantastic. After my recent physical, my Doctor was thrilled with the results and told me to keep on doing what I'm doing! I intend to follow this way of eating until I've lost all the weight I need to, then use it for maintenance. Some might feel my weight loss isn't fast enough. As long as my weight keeps moving down, that's fast enough for me. I highly recommend this lifestyle!

YA?Olivia, the narrator of this story, was born to an American mother and a Chinese father. She meets her 18-year-old Chinese half sister, Kwan, for the first time shortly after their father's death. Kwan adores "Libby-ah" and tries to introduce her to her Chinese heritage through stories and memories. Olivia is embarrassed by her sibling, but finds as she matures that she has inadvertently absorbed much about Chinese superstitions, spirits, and reincarnation. Olivia explains, "My sister Kwan believes she has Yin eyes. She sees those who have died and now dwell in the World of Yin..." Now in her mid-30s, Olivia, a photographer, is still seeking a meaningful life. The climax of the story comes when she and her estranged husband Simeon, a writer, go to China on assignment with Kwan as the interpreter. In the village in which she grew up, Kwan returns to the world of Yin, her mission completed. Olivia finally learns what Kwan was trying to show her: "If people we love die, then they are lost only to our ordinary senses. If we remember, we can find them anytime with our hundred secret senses." The meshing of the contemporary story of Olivia and the tales Kwan tells of her past life in late-19th century China may confuse some readers. Kwan believes she must help Olivia and Simon reunite and thereby fix a broken promise from a previous incarnation. Wonderful, engaging book by an author who can really interpret her work

Amy Tan's book is very interesting in that I usually don't like a book where I don't find the major protagonist appealing. Well, this is the exception that proves the rule. There were enough complex, interesting and engaging characters that I was not bothered by finding the major character unlikeable. And this is definitely one of the audio books that is a better experience than reading the book. Amy Tan is a brilliant interpreter of her writing.

THE HUNDRED SECRET SENSES by Amy Tan uses a similar pattern which her previous books seem to follow, in which she starts the story in America with characters that are full- or part Chinese, and have a relative or two that tells them stories of the old country. In Tan's most creative book, she introduces the reader to Olivia Laguni, whose father was Chinese and mother was white. Laguni is her stepfather, her father having died when she was only a toddler. Obviously, Laguni at one point adopts her and her brothers, giving them a new name and in essence wiping out her ties to her Chinese family.
Then, along comes Kwan. From that point on, Olivia feels tormented by this half sister. By this time, Olivia's father has been gone for years now. But Kwan comes to America from China to become part of their family forever. A much older sister, Kwan brings to Olivia stories of the old country, for Kwan is the product of Olivia's father and his first wife, all of whom were living in China. Although Olivia considers herself Chinese, her ties are with her birth country of America, and she finds it very hard to relate to her older sister who seems to be more mother than sister as Olivia grows into adulthood. Kwan is there to take care of her while her mother is somewhat absent from Olivia's life. And part of Kwan's mothering is telling Olivia stories about a strange world - where she sees and talks to ghosts.
Kwan's impact on Olivia is obvious, in ways that Olivia could never admit. But as the reader sees, Olivia's relationship with Kwan grows in strength as they grow older, and especially when they make a trip to China, along with Olivia's estranged husband Simon. After years of listening to Kwan's stories of a previous life in 1800's China, this world comes to life as they explore this land that is Olivia's heritage.
THE HUNDRED SECRET SENSES was not my favorite Amy Tan book. There were a lot of elements that made it difficult to fully enjoy this story, including the paranormal facets that were part of Kwan's character. Having said this, I ended the book understanding what Tan's message was in this story and I felt very satisfied. It is not a book I highly recommend to all readers, but I feel that if one is patient enough to get through the stories that Kwan tells about her past life, one will be rewarded at the very end.

MY FIRST AMY TAN BOOK

My daughter was the one that told me to read this book. I read it while on vacation at the beach. It was a perfect read. I loved Kwan, and I wish I had a sister like her. Olivia her half sister was a pain in the rear. The book had two stories in one, so the anticipation of seeing what happens in both stories was a new experience for me. Such a wonderful look at the culture of Chinese-Americans in San Fransicso. I come from a Asian/Caucasian background, and was laughing at many parts of the novel because Kwan sounded so much like my mother. "Bad Luck-Bad Health this or that" Thank-you Amy Tan for writing such a wonderful story. SPOILER ALERT! I just wish the ending was a little more different....I won't put any more down, but I hope there is a continuation of this novel....Ms. Tan did leave a few loose strings or openings.

Very Enjoyable

"Miss Marple: The Complete Short Stories" is a collection of twenty short mysteries featuring Miss Marple. Though written as contemporary mysteries, they are now historical mysteries. A few of the stories mentioned a historical (or British) thing where I couldn't figure out what meant. Perhaps this was because they were short stories or because some of them were early in her career. I've never had this problem with Agatha Christie's novels.

The mysteries were clever, and they could be solved. I was a little disappointed that the title of one of the short stories gave away the whodunit. Overall, I'd recommend this book to "puzzle mystery" lovers, especially to Miss Marple fans.

A Superb Collection of Short Stories

I love the character of Miss Marple. The way she is constantly underestimated never ceases to amuse. Agatha Christie was up to her best when she wrote these stories. Nothing's predictable except that Miss Marple will solve the crime. My favorites in this collection are from The Tuesday Club Murders. None of the stories in this book are very long but with each one I couldn't wait to get to the end and find out who the murderer was. I've read the book twice yet I still couldn't recall or predict who the murder would be in the majority of the stories. Great book!

The only criticism I have of this book, as it is otherwise completely entertaining, is that there are pages missing. Not that it skips from page 156 to 164 but that there are probably two pages of story line missing from 156 to 157. I'm just issuing this as a warning to anyone who purchases this edition. I will contact Harper and Collins and let them know about this as well.

"I have a New Year's plan," Nelson writes in the prologue to this charming diary of an unapologetic "readaholic." Her goal: to read a book a week for a year and try "to get down on paper what I've been doing for years in my mind: matching up the reading experience with the personal one and watching where they intersect-or don't." Armed with a list of books, the author, a Glamour senior contributing editor, the New York Observer's publishing columnist and a veteran book reviewer, begins her 52-week odyssey. She doesn't necessarily stick to her list, which includes classics ("the homework I didn't do in college"), books everyone's talking about (like David McCullough's John Adams) and titles as diverse as Call It Sleep, by Henry Roth, and Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting. But she succeeds in sharing her infectious enthusiasm for literature in general, the act of reading and individual books and authors. Along the way, Nelson unearths treasures. She becomes enamored of David Mura's Turning Japanese, a memoir that helps her understand her Japanese-American husband better, and looks to Henry Dunow's The Way Home, about coaching baseball, while trying to help her second-grade son improve his athletic skills. Entertaining

Well, I spotted this book because the title jumped out at me, it is exactly how I live my life. I am a passionate reader, and although this book was very entertaining, I have to admit I felt like Ms. Nelson felt that I was a reader a little beneath others, because I am one of the readers who read mostly fiction, and mostly "best seller" fiction. I love writers who continue characters, I love mysteries and books that she considers "men's books", like Tom Clancy. I still look forward to Robert Ludlum,because I just can't let go....In other words, I am the book reader and buyer who goes to the book store, or orders from Amazon, and gobbles up the books which a some people consider junk!
But that said, I did identify with Ms. Nelson's love of books. I have a book with me all the time and I keep a copy of something, (normally Jane Austen) in the car in case I forget to bring what I am reading at the time. I go through at least 2 books a week, sometime more, I read the reviews on Amazon ( I don't always go by what they say, but I read them!), and I read every book magazine and newspaper book section I can get my hands on. I have hundreds of books I have not read, and hundreds and hundreds more that I have. My husband has to beg me at times to please give some away, we have no more room.
So, I too have too many books,and never enough time. But I do want to thank Ms. Nelson for a couple of things. I have started (after turning 45) allowing myself to put down books I don't like. I used to feel the need, ( I guess since I paid for it) to finish it no matter what. I have now decided life is too short. Ms. Nelson reinforced this for me, and has helped with the guilt that still sneaks in once in a while. And second...I have a confession. I too look ahead sometimes. I particularly liked her friend who explained it this way....I look ahead on something I really like, just so I can relax and enjoy the journey. (Those were not her words, but the sentiment). Also, I like the reader friend who reads the end of mysteries first, since he doesn't really like suspense! Anyway I have always thought I was the only one who did that, and I never have been able to confess it! Thank you for bringing my deep secret into the light!
So, read this book, I would have given it a five star, if only I didn't feel as if Ms. Nelson and her publishing friends want to sell me their client's books, but don't respect me as a reader!

One of the best of the books about reading genre

Books derived essentially from somebody else's reading list attract me every time, but I'm usually sorry by mid-point because they only remind me of my own reading that I'm neglecting. Or, they tell me what I already know or feel. Or they don't talk enough, they just list. Or they talk up books that aren't my thing. Sara Nelson's SO MANY BOOKS, SO LITTLE TIME is different. I enjoyed every minute of it.
Nelson is an inveterate reader, the messy kind who frequently has more than one book open at once. Her plan for the year 2002 was to read a book a week and record her reactions, or more importantly explore how the book ties into her life. The weekly entries take on a variety of themes, not to mention books, as Nelson opens up her mind and life. Books that dovetail with the issues of her life, books that distract her from the issues of her life, books that work or don't on vacation, books that call up her younger selves, books that nick into her marriage or relationships with parents, books that parent with her, books that fit a mood--she finds them all across the year. She is amazingly candid, wisecrackingly funny and often touching. She keeps the suspense going: can she keep up the pace and fulfill her goals?
In the end she and we know far more about her than about the books, but learning about oneself is part of the reading journey. I think a lot of readers will find that even if their lives and likes are different from Nelson's, they will have found a soulmate.

A book about reading for people who like to read

Sara Nelson has written a book that any number of us might have produced some version of. The author set herself the task of reading a book a week in 2002 and recording her responses to what she read, "matching up the reading experience with the personal one and watching where they intersect--or don't." The result is a collection of thirty-something (not 52, as you might expect) interconnected essays that take Nelson's books of the week as their starting point.

Readers will find much to relate to in Nelson's musings on, for example, good first lines or "double-booking" (reading more than one book at a time) or the perils of reading friends' manuscripts. There is also the occasional shock on offer, as when Nelson reveals that some people skip around in the books they read or, quelle horreur, stop reading them altogether before the last page. If it is true, as I think, that people who like to read like to read about reading, then Nelson's pleasant ruminations should appeal.
