A King's Ransom, by Sharon Kay Penman

From the New York Times-bestselling author of Lionheart comes the dramatic sequel, telling of the last dangerous years of Richard, Couer de Lion’s life.

This long-anticipated sequel to the national bestseller Lionheart is a vivid and heart-wrenching story of the last event-filled years in the life of Richard, Coeur de Lion. Taken captive by the Holy Roman Emperor while en route home—in violation of the papal decree protecting all crusaders—he was to spend fifteen months imprisoned, much of it in the notorious fortress at Trefils, from which few men ever left alive, while Eleanor of Aquitaine moved heaven and earth to raise the exorbitant ransom.

For the five years remaining to him, betrayals, intrigues, wars, and illness were ever present. So were his infidelities, perhaps a pattern set by his father’s faithlessness to Eleanor. But the courage, compassion, and intelligence of this warrior king became the stuff of legend, and A King’s Ransom brings the man and his world fully and powerfully alive.

From Booklist
Penman follows up her best-selling Lionheart (2011) with a panoramic retelling of the tumultuous last years of Richard the Lionheart’s life. In addition to detailing the long road home from the Third Crusade and his brutal imprisonment at the hands of the Holy Roman emperor, she continues to explore the complex nature of Richard’s relationships with his demanding and determined mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine; his long-suffering wife, Berengaria; his sister Joanna, Queen of Sicily; and a host of other superbly rendered historical figures. Breathing life into a revered legend is never easy, but Penman has absorbed herself so fully into the heart and mind of her protagonist that an undeniably flawed but refreshingly human Richard virtually walks off the pages. This atmospheric fictional biography showcases the author’s mastery of all things medieval while providing some refreshingly new twists on the life and times of a hallowed hero. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Penman has a well-deserved reputation for serving up meaty historical fiction. Lionheart was a huge best-seller; expect no less from this masterful sequel. --Margaret Flanagan

Review
Praise for A King’s Ransom

“A King’s Ransom [is] historical fiction of the first order, a narrative synthesis of the royal marriages and petty rivalries, the personal slights and gestures of loyalty, the grand deeds and simple twists of fate that shape events . . . Instead of history that reads like a novel, Penman achieves something greater: a novel that reads like history.”—Willamette Week

“Penman’s long-awaited sequel to her book Lionheart covers the last seven years of Richard’s life. There’s betrayal, war, illness and intrigue….She includes everyday details that get you right into the story . . . once you start reading you won’t want to stop.”—British Weekly

“Detailed down to the last flagon of wine, Penman’s work will please serious fans of historical fiction. . . Characters rise from the pages—Richard, brave warrior, skilled diplomat; Heinrich, "If he were cut, he’d bleed ice"; the mercenary Mercadier; and multitudes more. Seven years of sieges and battles, confrontations in castles and on horseback are lovingly detailed. . . Penman’s latest is a massively entertaining work of historical fiction for dedicated fans.” —Kirkus Reviews

Stunning. Simply Stunning.
By M.Jacobsen
I have, admittedly, been a fan of Penman for a good many years, ever since my forays into historical fiction quickly led me to her work. Known for her attention to historical accuracy as well as her ability to simply tell a whopping good story, she has never disappointed. However even with that in mind, I did not expect the sheer pleasure of A King's Ransom.

The sequel to her successful Lionheart, the story of England's Richard I, A King's Ransom picks up where Lionheart left off: as Richard and his crusaders are leaving the Holy Land in 1192 to return home before Richard's smarmy younger brother John, the French King, and the Holy Roman Emperor can do further damage in Richard's absence. Those who know their history are aware that Richard's return to England does not go as planned. And that is the essence of 657 pages of A King's Ransom.

Penman has, in my opinion, exceeded all previous efforts here. Not once - not one single time - did the story bog down in tedious detail. Every word counted. Each and every character - not just our primary protagonists - was fully fleshed out and unique. Historical details abounded and never once distracted from the story; they enhanced every page. Simply put: she made history come alive and that is what an accomplished historical fiction novelist can do. I was literally saddened when I turned the last page...as much for the story line (even though I knew my history and knew what was coming) as for the fact the book was finished. (Yes, I know I could always read it again, but you can never quite recapture that feeling that comes from reading a fantastic novel for the first time, can you?)

If you've not read the previous book, Lionheart, I strongly suggest you read that before buying this book. If you like it as much as I think you will, you'll want to go back and read her entire series of books on the Angevin family that ruled England because they really are wonderful. Happy reading, everyone!

Disappointed
By L78
I fell in love with Sharon Kay Penman's books when I read Here Be Dragons. I loved the entire trilogy, especially books 2 and 3. I also greatly enjoyed Sunne in Splendor. I liked the Henry II/Eleanor of Aquitaine books, although not quite as much as the Welsh trilogy. However, the King Richard books have failed to capture me. I had the toughest time slogging through this novel. To me, it is too dense, too long, too detailed and felt like I was reading a history book with only some interjections by characters. I just never connected with Richard. He never felt real to me and it just didn't grab me like other SKP books. I will likely still try to read the concluding book in the trilogy, but this book really lacked the magic of other SKP books (especially Sunne in Splendour and the Welsh Trilogy) that transformed historical figures into living, breathing people while also staying as true as possible to history.

Remarkable Story
By Susan Johnson
This is the first Sharon Kay Penman book I have read and I am simply astounded by it. I have never read an author who packs so much history into a novel and it is so readable and easy to understand. There is a large cast of characters as Kings often move in large groups of people and yet I was able to keep them straight. I did not have to refer to a cast of characters chart (if it had one-my copy did not) or make notes to keep track of the players. That, in itself, was an amazing feat.

Still it was the story itself that was the star. I now know more about Richard the Lionhearted than I ever conceivably thought I would. He was portrayed as a man with faults and warts and it made him come alive for me. He was an impatient man who liked war more than anything else. He found love and ruling his Kingdom as obstacles to overcome so he could pursue his passion of making war. The story starts with him leaving the Holy Land with Jerusalem unconquered and on his way back to England. Along the way he is captured and ultimately made the prisoner of the Emperor of Germany. Apparently troubles between England and Germany started way before WWI.

Imprisonment was a torture. Accustomed to having his word obeyed instantly, he is now subject to his jailers. At one point he was even shackled, an even unheard of for a King and a Knight on a Holy Crusade. Eventually through ransom and interventions, he is released and sets off to make more war. This time he is fighting the King of France to regain his lands he lost through his imprisonment. He makes a lightening visit to England but is soon back to France to continue fighting. Richard doesn't really waste time trying to rule England. He views it more as an ATM.

The women are very interesting. Richard is surrounded by strong women including his mother, Eleanor, and his sister, Joanna. I have to confess that I saw Katherine Hepburn's face every time I read about Eleanor. I guess I've seen "Lion in the Winter" too many times but it was really comforting. The women, though strong willed, were just chess pieces in the matrimony field so it was great to see some happy marriages. I really enjoyed Joanna and the Count of Toulouse's relationship. It was quite a delight.

I found this a fascinating book. It's long (657 pages) but it is one that I don't think could have been edited for length. There was no filler or padding just great historical information. I plan to read more of her books. I highly recommend this one but I have one caveat. If you have a Kindle buy it on that. My arms just got tired holding that heavy book.
