Essays on the most pivotal military conflict of the twentieth century written by renowned historians and presented by the editor of the acclaimed What If?

No reader interested in twentieth-century history and the Second World War will want to miss this collection of fascinating essays. In more than two hundred thousand words and twenty maps, some of the most respected and well-known military historians of our time describe the horror and heroism that defined a generation: the chaos of Europe and the Nazi reign of terror prior to D day; the far-flung fight in East Asia and the Pacific; the secret struggle of intelligence services; the final Allied push into Central Europe; and the atomic end in Japan.

Stephen E. Ambrose tells the miraculous story of a single American company that captured a bridge over the Rhine-a river Hitler had considered a barrier never to be broken. John Keegan takes us inside Berlin in the Spring of 1945 during the most intense city siege in history. William Manchester reminds us of the vital importance of the RAF's radar towers during the Battle of Britain, one of the truly hair-raising "narrow misses" of the war. In two pieces, Caleb Carr illuminates the only war Hilter won-the Blitzkrieg campaign over Poland in 1939-and brings to life the German "Black Knight," Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt, who so inspired his troops in late 1944 that he may have prolonged the war another six months.

Essays from other illustrious contributors include Antony Beevor on Stalingrad; Victor Davis Hanson on General Curtis LeMay; Eliot A. Cohen on Churchill; and Alistair Horne on Montgomery.

From Publishers Weekly
An absorbing, nonsynthetic series of close-up views of the war's multiple fronts and facets, these 44 essays are drawn from the pages of MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History, a must-read for practitioners and fans of the flourishing subgenre. The names behind the essays will certainly pique the interest of general readers: Stephen Ambrose, Caleb Carr, Stanley Weintraub and many others. Highlights include Carr on Poland, 1939, and on German "old-school" Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt; Ambrose on the 1945 Rhine crossing--over its single remaining bridge--by a lesser-known U.S. division in pursuit of Rundstedt; and former deputy undersecretary of the army Thaddeus Holt on Maj. General Edward P. King Jr., "The King of Bataan." Cowley, who edits the What If? book series and is founding editor of MHQ, has chosen judiciously, taking us to Africa, Asia, Guadalcanal and other WWII hot spots. The combination of solid writing and star power has already made this collection a BMOC main selection and a History Book Club alternate; store-based sales won't be far behind. (Mar. 19)Forecast: Despite its size, this collection is anything but bloated and diffuse, and will appeal to readers who don't want to slog through a conventional one-volume history. The contributors' familiarity and respectability will put war-interest browsers over the buy threshold.

From Library Journal
This book is a collection of 44 articles on various topics, reprinted from MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History and organized according to the chronology of World War II. Some of the big guns in the field are represented here, including Stephen E. Ambrose, John Keegan, David Glantz, William Manchester, and Caleb Carr. Along with well-written essays on the capture of the Remagen Bridge and Pearl Harbor are intriguing personal accounts of the Battle of El Alamein and of being a kamikaze pilot. The book, compiled by Cowley, founding editor of MHQ, can easily be read for enjoyment, but without an index, footnotes, or a bibliography its academic usefulness is limited. That is to be expected, however, as the articles were written for a general audience. With 20 maps; the pictures (not seen) should add to the pleasure of reading. Suitable for public libraries. From Booklist
This absorbing book belies the assumption that no military operation of World War II has escaped an author's attention. Several of the dozens of episodes examined here have never been written up before, such as the German invasion of North America to install a secret weather station in Labrador. Some battles have simply sunk from the notice of experts due to the titanic scale of surrounding events. For instance, the Russians' 1942-1943 victory at Stalingrad obscured their simultaneously severe reverse at Rzhev, just west of Moscow. Chronicled and assessed by several dozen top-rank contemporary military historians (including Carlo D'Este, Antony Beevor, and Stanley Weintraub), unusual or seldom noticed aspects of the war come to light, none stranger than a characteristically delusional episode from the Nazis' death throes: their production of a Mrs. Miniver-type inspirational called Life Goes On. With crucial aspects of the Pacific war also unveiled here, a suite of surprises awaits even the most knowledgeable reader of the war's history. Gilbert Taylor

"Color" Commentary on WWII
By Shawn P. Rife
This book is an excellent companion piece to any conventional history of the Second World War. This compilation of essays represents a "best of the best" of previously published articles from the magazine MHQ, and each provides unique "color" commentary on snap-shot events of the war, some well-known,
some not. Obviously, some of the contributions are better than others, but there are none that I didn't enjoy reading.
The more noteworthy ones include novelist Caleb Carr's look at Germany's 1939 invasion of Poland. The author of two works in the book (the second is a look at the "Black Knight"-Field Marshal Gerd von Runstedt; an interesting piece marred by poorly substantiated and thus unfair criticism of Gen. Eisenhower's strategy in 1944-45), Carr makes a good case in his first essay that the conduct of the often forgotten Polish campaign which started the war is worthy of a lot more study and attention than it has generally received. Similarly, David Glantz gives us a good look at Operation Mars, the gigantic offensive designed to push the Germans away from Moscow in 1942. The offensive was a colossal failure but Soviet suppression and the victory at Stalingrad allowed this battle to be shrouded in obscurity for most of postwar history. David Shears provides two interesting looks at the possibilities surrounding Operation Sea Lion, Germany's half-hearted (and ultimately junked) plan for invading England. In this same theme, "The Turning Points of Tarawa" by Joseph H. Alexander gives a startling reassessment of the bloody battle for Tarawa, from predominantly a Japanese point of view.
For stories from the Home Front, Theodore F. Cooke Jr. gives readers a very illuminating look at Japanese reaction to the news of Pearl Harbor in "Tokyo, December 8, 1941," while George Feifer's "The Last Picture Show" gives an account of Joesph Goebbels' bizarre film project in the dying days of the Third Reich to rally German morale to face the final cataclysm.
Interesting "I Was There" pieces include "The Day the Hornet Sank", a memoir by a nineteen year old petty officer "Airedale," and "A Kamikaze's Tale," the first account published in the West by a surviving Kamikaze flier.
Worthwhile assessments of wartime leadership include Alistair Horne's "In Defense of Montgomery", an apology for the often disparaged British field marshal by an historian worthy (if name-recognition wasn't such a marketing factor) of front-cover billing, but unfortunately he's trumped by the overrated William Manchester (who does have a good, if somewhat disjointed account of the Battle of Britain in this book), as well as the ubiquitous Stephen Ambrose. While I did not agree with many of Horne's conclusions--I would say that von Rundstedt's description of Rommel also fit's Rommel's nemesis Monty: "a brave man, and a very capable commander, but not really qualified for high command" (besides, Monty was a pompous [jerk], a point Horne willingly concedes)--this essay is still highly recommended reading. I was more sympathetic to Victor Davis Hanson's rehabilitation of the legacy of Curtis LeMay (America's version of the RAF's "Bomber Harris") in "The Right Man." While he's been an object of left-wing ridicule beginning primarily in the 1960s, a frank, contextual appraisal of LeMay's wartime (and postwar, too) accomplishments indicates that he's worthy of recognition as one of our great wartime commanders (and deserves credit as the architect of the strategic force crucial to democracy's victory in the Cold War). Read this piece together with Williamson Murray's "Did Strategic Bombing Work?", an excellent rebuttal to the often repeated assertion that the Allied bombing campaign against Germany was not only ineffective but patently immoral.
Finally, Eliot A. Cohen's "Churchill and his Generals" is not only an excellent study of the British Prime Minister exercising wartime leadership, it's also an important reminder to Americans of the inseparable linkage between politics and war. Our traditional desire to separate those two considerations has arguably led to outcomes that fell well short of expectations following many of America's wars.
All in all, this book should be considered an essential addition to any World War II library.

Illuminating Collection Of Essays On World War Two!
By Barron Laycock
What a wonderful gift editor Robert Crowley has given us with this treasure trove of individual essays from individual contributors in this spellbinding book covering a number of different aspects and experiences during World War Two! As one of the authors, the late popular historian Stephan Ambrose has shown us with many of his own works, the history of the Second World War was such a massive and variegated plethora of anecdotes, campaigns and experiences that it is nearly impossible to exhaust the steady stream of captivating stories that spring from its loins like bouncing babies, fully formed, into the waiting reader's lap. This is a particularly attractive package of essays, perfect for people who want something relatively short, as each individual offering within is, something one can read on a plane flight in its entirety and then pick up later without trying to remember the context or story thread where he had left off. And each of the stories makes for fascinating reading indeed.
The list of authors included is both impressive and eclectic, ranging from Ambrose, who weighs in with the taut and stirring tale of a platoon of paratroopers attempting to take and control a bridge key to the initial thrust of the first few hours of the Normandy landing, to Caleb Carr, better known for his success as a novelist ("The Alienist") but quite an eminent historian as well, to William Manchester to John Keegan to Antony Beever to Stanley Weintraub to David M. Glantz. And this is only some of the luminary historically prominent authors gathered together in what can only be described as a bravura collection of stories and perspectives on the total war effort, ranging in topics from the island hopping effort in the South Pacific to the desperate hours of the first few hours leading up to the Battle of the Bulge in the French Ardennes in December of 1944.
Despite my own wide reading of similar historical sources over the last thirty years, I found several of the articles quite illuminating and educational, as with Caleb Car's treatment of life on the ground as the invasion of Poland proceeds in September, 1939 in the precipitating event that quickly served to trigger the advent of the Second World War as such. Similarly, articles by Charles Berges, Sir David Fraser, and Carlo D'Este proved both fascinating and edifying in illuminating aspects of the war only poorly understood and studied in the existing literature.
This monograph especailly serves the interested private scholars like me who wants to know more about various different aspects and perspectives of the war that are not adequately or fully treated elsewhere, and used in conjunction with marvelous other resources such as Gerhard Weinberg's masterful "A World At Arms", Richard Spector's terrific ""Eagle Against The Sun", and William Shirer's eye-witness testimony in "The Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich", gives us a much richer and more comprehensive understanding of the signal historical event of the 20th century. Enjoy!

World War II Vignettes
By Frank J. Konopka
With any compilation from various authors, the articles in that type of book tend to be a bit uneven. Some articles are excellent, others less so. That is the situation with this work, I feel. There are the majority of articles which rate five stars, and there are some which go as low as three. I have therefore averaged out my ratings as a whole, and come up with this four star rating opinion. That having been said, let me recommend this work to you if you are at all interested in learning little bits and pieces about important parts of WW II. It is also quite possible that you will enjoy some of the articles that I did not, for everyone's take on writing is subjective. You may not learn a lot of new information in this book, but at its best the info is presented in extremely interesting ways, and even in some of the lower- rated articles, there are still nuggets of information which I appreciated receiving. You won't be disappointed by reading this work.

This Is Not The Story You Think It Is: A Season of Unlikely Happiness, by Laura Munson

Laura Munson's essay in the New York Times, about the time she was tested in a way she never anticipated, created a firestorm-now here's the whole story.

When Laura Munson's essay was published, The New York Times was so flooded with responses that they had to close down the comment feature. Readers wrote in saying that they had sent the column to all of their friends. Therapists wrote Munson to tell her that they were passing it out to their clients.

What did Munson write that caused such a fervor?

Laura detailed what happened when her husband of more than twenty years told her he wasn't sure he loved her anymore and wanted to move out. And while you might think you know where this story is going, this isn't the story you think it is. Laura's response to her husband: I don't buy it.

In this poignant, wise, and often funny memoir, Munson recounts a period of months in which her faith in herself-and her marriage-was put to the test. Shaken to the core after the death of her beloved father, not finding the professional success that she had hoped for, and after countless hours of therapy, Laura finally, at age forty, realized she had to stop basing her happiness on things outside her control and commit herself to an "End of Suffering." This Is Not The Story You Think It Is... chronicles a woman coming to terms with the myths we tell ourselves-and others-about our life and realizing that ultimately happiness is completely within our control.

From Publishers Weekly
A kind of colloquial diary composed during the rocky summer her husband was suffering a midlife crisis, debut author Munson aims to convince the reader, in her chatty, self-absorbed narrative, that her hard-won serenity helped conquer her husband's shakiness at committing himself to their future together. When her husband (who remains nameless) announced his uncertainty that he loved her, then embarked on bizarrely atypical behavior, leaving her and their two children, eight and 12, wondering where he was, Munson had her own notions about what was ailing him, reinforced by mountains of self-help books and therapists: his job was failing, he was drowning in debt, and he was worried about losing their fabulous 20-acre horse-and-ski farm in rural Montana. Munson hoped he could regain a sense of gratitude for what they had, namely 15 years of a loving family. Munson urged her husband to take a trip, as she had just returned from a month-long rejuvenating stint to Italy, or even helicopter lessons, yet his resentment of her ran deeper than she cared to confront. She concentrated on what she could control, namely creating a nice home and throwing herself into community activism, then witnessed with joy her husband's gradual coming around. Unfortunately, Munson's journey doesn't ring entirely convincing or forthright, and if the title truly reflected her marital crisis, the reader might run the other way. (Apr.)

Review
"Laura Munson takes the spiritual stuff and the personal stuff and the love stuff and the pain stuff and she brews them all together in a very fun and touching memoir. I'm a fan. This is a wonderful book."
-Marianne Williamson

"This Is Not the Story You Think It Is is true to its title. The book took me by surprise. I read it in one sitting and loved Munson's tone, wit, wisdom and writing."
-Anita Shreve

"Let me tell you what this book is about. This is a book about saying yes. It's the story of Laura Munson's alchemical ability to create abundance and bounty in the face of scarcity and abandonment-no small triumph. Filled with gems big and small. . . Munson is a wonderful guide-wise, brave, and tenaciously honest."
-Melanie Gideon, author of The Slippery Year: A Meditation on Happily Ever After

"This book is fabulous. Laura Munson's noble quest to become the source of her own happiness will take you by the hand and heart as it guides you through the steps to living a life without suffering. Her story pulls back the curtain on the only magic we ever need to know: how to make the shift from fear to love."
-Arielle Ford, author of The Soulmate Secret

"Laura Munson's powerful and buoyant book gives us wisdom in generous slices. But it is Munson's abilities as a storyteller that show us how to discover-how to find and feel-the real wisdom that may arise from our lives, as messy and heartbreaking as they may be. Woman, wife, mother, neighbor-this fine writer converts her own life's journeys into a series of vignettes so focused and compelling, so heartbreaking, sometimes so funny, that they resound with the force of parables."
-David Baker, poetry editor of "The Kenyon Review"

"Laura Munson has served up a whopping portion of sanity. This book has the potential to start a cultural revolution."
-Leif Peterson, author of Catherine Wheels and Normal Like Us

"I loved this book. It's unusual, memorable and wry, laugh-out-loud funny too."
-Leslie Morgan Steiner, author of Crazy Love and Mommy Wars

Powerful--unflinching and uplifting
By Jody
Nine hours after announcing that he's not sure he loves her any more, Laura Munson's husband has not yet returned home from an errand, and she's in some doubt if and when he ever will. It's clear this is not going to be a warm and fuzzy memoir and yes, it's written in present tense. Ms. Munson is very honest in saying she's not sure how the story will end. The only thing she is sure of is that her tormented husband will not get to decide how and when their relationship will end and that she can choose to not suffer, no matter what the outcome. She invites the reader to go along with her on her journey, and it's an unusual and adventurous one, though not always pretty.

The reader becomes Munson's confidante and with her, experiences the disappointment, rage, and hurt caused by her husband's thoughtlessness, but we also discover the joy that comes from the realization that while we can't always control events, we can control our reactions to them. Munson recognizes her husband's pain, and somehow she manages to give him the space he needs to heal, while guarding her own well being as well as that of their children. It's not easy, and her life becomes a series of little battles as she protects her children, maintains her own career, keeps the household running while being compassionate about her husband's state of mind without getting sucked into it. Somehow she also upholds her vow to be happy and not suffer. It helps that she's a writer, has a great therapist, and a few trustworthy and non-judgmental friends and her own interests as well as living in a place of great beauty, with twenty acres, two ponds, a horse, four gardens and two great children, though she thoroughly makes her point that pain is pain, no matter what the economic context.

This could have been a depressing and typical midlife crisis story. It could also have been whiny and New Age. It's none of these. It is an honest and not always flattering chronicle of Ms. Munson's constant struggle over that summer to not suffer, create happiness, and let go of the need and desire to know what happens next. It's a very personal and courageous story that will resonate with anyone who's ever experienced the ups, downs and out of controlness of a long-term relationship. It's inspiring--not because it has a storybook happy ever after ending, although in a way it does, but because the ending is incidental to the story. In her zen like journey, Ms. Munson proves that we do have a stunning power to alter the quality of our lives. That's something we all need to learn and well worth proving.

Let Me Tell You How Special I Am!
By Teresa Jeanne
I suppose congratulations are in order to the author for finally getting a book published. Even if it is not very well written. (It was actually painful at times to read something that read like an above average 16 year old wrote it). To her credit, the author does TRY to mock herself and her husband for their grandiose pretensions that they have somehow created a more special life than anyone else... particularly anyone else from their very privileged *families of origin*. We are constantly reminded that: a) at least one of them is descended from Mayflower passengers ; they come from affluent backrounds and attended the best schools; and that she has heirloom china, crystal and silver. All of which has made her treasure *beauty*. Because no one raised in modest families of origin could possibly appreciate the beauty of Steuben crystal or Haviland and Herend china or grow a garden of roses and herbs or smell mint properly. She congratulates herself and her husband for *rejecting* the social status they were born into as they forge a new life in the western part of the country. Doing the very trendy and cliche thing of *writing* (fruitlessly) managing a microbrewery, having horses, 20 acres of land and a kitchen with marble counters and stainless steel appliances and an *Italian stove*. Completely oblvious to the fact that they did the *trendy thing* of Seattle, Montana, Wyoming et al. that everyone else in their age group was doing. In other words, they are living the cliche of their particular generation's search for the same status their parents sought when they joined the country clubs in suburban Chicago and New York. (I am reminded of a niece of mine and her husband ...who pride themselves for being artistic and free and above all that materialistic yearning who asked for cookware for Christmas...AllClad only please..Calphalon is too pedestrian for them).

The husband, who does appear to be a rather selfish twit, abandoned a good but hardly challenging job managing a microbrewery in order to *make a killing* with an employment recruiting and placement business run from the small Montana town they had settled in. She blamed its failure on 9/11 but in fact..it was a bad concept in a bad location and anyone with any sense could have figured this out. They are in financial straits and she decides it would be a good time to go to Italy. She claims the fares for the family of four could be paid for with frequent flyer miles (a claim I find as believable as her claim that she just so happened to have in her freezer the exact things she needed to make the perfect cassoulet and in her pantry a jar of rendered duck fat). The husband doesn't join her and when she returns he is in a snit. DUH!

I am not giving this book one star because she does offer ONE strategy for coping with hostility from her husband...namely keeping her mouth shut. She really does not seem to have any sense of the gravity of their financial situation as she spends money on helicopter lessons for her 40 plus year old husband (with no clue as to how lucrative this profession may be) and at the end of the book a horse trailer so she can take her horse wherever she wants. Because after all, it was the money earned doing her writing that she was spending.

Over the past 15-20 years, the *memoir* has become the vehicle of choice for anyone who has pretensions of being a published writer. Some are quite engaging, humorous, or compelling. This one was just self-indulgent and poorly written and I wonder how on earth it was ever considered worthy of publication.

Disappointing Read
By Allen H. Ramsay
I was really excited to read this book after finding the original article, "Those Aren't Fighting Words, Dear," so mesmerizing. But Ms. Munson should have stopped there. Her talent lies in short, witty, vulnerable prose, but when she extends it to the length of a book, it just doesn't fly. It feels like a writing assignment that has been padded with all kinds of fluff so it would meet the required number of pages.

Her journal is choppy and self-indulgent, and she is embarrassingly disconnected with reality. I find it hard to relate to someone who constantly complains about their massive debt and financial situation, yet travels to Italy, has a horse and a boat, and never considers getting a paying job. She doesn't even seem remotely interested in where the money is coming from to buy the organic vegetables she uses for canning tomato sauce, a process we had to read about ad nauseum as she tried to paint a picture of what a great mother looks like. And she is annoyingly self-important, talking about her gift of "creating beauty around her," as if the rest of the world is full of hacks who have no idea how to arrange flowers or set a table.

I did not find Ms. Munson to be an empathetic or relatable person in this book. Although her husband is equally unattractive given his bad behavior, I found myself rooting for him to make the break so he wouldn't have to listen to how awesome she is for the rest of his life, strutting around the house in her chaps and arranging her grandma's silver. I continued reading the book in hopes that there would be some pearls of wisdom somewhere (there weren't). Finally, an "end to suffering" when I finished it.

Amazon.com Review
When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables, Prince Edward Island, send for a boy orphan to help them out at the farm, they are in no way prepared for the error that will change their lives. The mistake takes the shape of Anne Shirley, a redheaded 11-year-old girl who can talk anyone under the table. Fortunately, her sunny nature and quirky imagination quickly win over her reluctant foster parents. Anne's feisty spirit soon draws many friends--and much trouble--her way. Not a day goes by without some melodramatic new episode in the tragicomedy of her life. Early on, Anne declares her eternal antipathy for Gilbert Blythe, a classmate who commits the ultimate sin of mocking her hair color. Later, she accidentally dyes that same cursed hair green. Another time, in her haste to impress a new neighbor, she bakes a cake with liniment instead of vanilla. Lucy Maud Montgomery's series of books about Anne have remained classics since the early 20th century. Her portrayal of this feminine yet independent spirit has given generations of girls a strong female role model, while offering a taste of another, milder time in history. This lovely boxed gift collection comprises Anne of Green Gables, Anne of the Island, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne's House of Dreams, Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, and Rilla of Ingleside. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-7-With a full cast and some background music, this radio play version of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic hits the high points of the original novel. It is quite abbreviated, so each episode in Anne's orphan-girl-made-good story is afforded just enough time to lay out the bones of the plot. However, Anne's spunky and endearing character shines through scene after scene, as does some of the nostalgic charm of Avonlea's Canadian setting and quaint old Green Gables. All the parts are read very well, with a touching intensity that makes up for some of the brevity of plot episodes. A narrator fills in quite smoothly between the scenes for each event. Two nice features for young listeners make this a useful introduction to audio fiction. There is a pleasant chime played at the end of each side, and at the beginning of each side a line or two from the preceding side is repeated, helping to move listeners smoothly through the break in the action. This entertaining version may help lead youngsters to the original novel. School and public libraries seeking to add abridged novels to their collections or to introduce or entice young readers to longer fiction will want to consider this version.

Book I received looks nothing like this.
By Diana
I love this book. I was looking to own a special edition, something to pass on to my daughter when she is old enough to enjoy it (she's two). I love the artwork shown on this edition. What I received however was nothing like this. What I received was a plain, dark blue, cover with the title on the binding only. Some might think "what's the big deal? Just return it". Or some might think "who cares what it looks like, the story is the same". This review is not for them, I DO find returning this to be a hassle. I find it a hassle to print out the return label, repackage the book, drive it to a ups drop off (if I had time to do that I would have gone to a bookstore to buy it). And I find it a hassle to worry about whether or not they will receive it. As an illustrator I DO care about the missing illustration. I'm a visual person, I bought this edition BECAUSE of the art on it. This review is for people who would like to know if they will receive what they are being shown.

The classic is great, but the editing mistakes are annoying
By L W Storyteller
I love Anne of Green Gables but found myself being pulled out of this book by all the editing mistakes (misspelled words, etc.). I definitely recommend the story, but not this edition of it.

Disappointed
By Chelsea
This book isn't at all what was advertised. It is a children's book. It doesn't have the same cover and has horrid illustrations inside. I am very disappointed, but it would cost more to send back than what I payed. Just say no.

My favorite
By M. J. Keel
Heretics of Dune surpasses the others in this series, so far (which are all excellent novels), for several reasons. 1)Herebert continues to develop the huge universe he started on the planet Arakis in the first book to an almost unsurpassed depth and yet it connects with all the other novels. 2)Heretics of Dune has enough twists and turns to keep a mystery reader satisfied. 3)Heretics is a drama with characters I cared about by the end of the story. 4)Herbert moves the action along to a fevered pitch while exploring ethics, theology, politics, psychology, manipulation, and sex through the experiences of his characters. So far, this is the crowning achievment of Herbert's writings I have read.

One cold November night when Kat Kominski was fifteen years old, she and some friends held up a convenience store. In the heat of the moment, one of the others shot and killed an off-duty cop moonlighting as a security guard. Kat and her pals fled the scene in a panic, and no one was caught. Thirteen years later, Kat - now Kate White - has built a new life for herself. Now a single mom with a nine-year-old son, she works as a prosecutor in the Philadelphia DA's office. But her dark past returns to haunt her when she walks into court one day and has a devastating encounter with a prisoner, Mario Castellanos, one of her companions from that terrible night. Hardcore criminal Mario is facing a possible sentence of twenty years. He lets Kate know that he is counting on her, his old friend turned prosecutor, to make sure he goes free instead. If Kate doesn't do what he wants, he'll claim she was the one who killed the off-duty cop. Kate is in a bind: If the truth about her past gets out, she stands to lose everything, including her son. But she can't do what Mario wants, either. As Mario ups his demands, blackmailing and terrorizing her, she is forced to turn for protection to a sexy homicide detective, Tom Braga, who suspects her of...something. The two clash repeatedly as Tom keeps digging into her past, trying to learn the truth. Then another, far more menacing, threat rears its head, and Kate realizes that her life - and her son's - are in terrible danger. Frantic, she sees that she has nowhere to turn. Except, maybe, to Tom...

From Publishers Weekly
In this scintillating romantic thriller from bestseller Robards (Obsession), Kate White, a single mother and Philadelphia ADA, is embarrassed in court when her cellphone goes off during a trial. Just then the defendant pulls out a pistol and starts shooting, killing the judge. The terror-stricken Kate fears for her life and the future of her young son, Ben, should she die in the melee. After being taken hostage, Kate escapes, supposedly by killing her captor. Kate soon discovers that her past as a troubled foster child has caught up to her. Someone tries to break into her home, while someone else follows her, threatening her and Ben. Det. Tom Braga, who investigates the courtroom shooting, is firmly convinced that Kate didn't kill her captor. Kate's vulnerability appeals to Tom's protective nature, drawing the pair together in a heated affair. Robards once again shows her flair for coupling first-rate suspense with multidimensional characters. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Single mother Kate White has had to travel a long, hard road to become a prosecutor in Philadelphia. A foster child, she had trouble with the law, culminating in a brutal incident at a Baltimore convenience store involving her friends. The birth of her son Ben changed her, and she put herself through college and law school, only to, once again, end up at the wrong place at the wrong time with the same wrong friends. During a routine trial, chaos erupts as the defendant attempts to escape, and Kate is taken hostage. After the murder and mayhem, Kate walks away a hero, but Detective Tom Braga senses that there is more to her story. Tom almost lost his brother in the melée, and although he is very attracted to Kate, he is determined to find out what she’s concealing. Best one in quite a while
By Elaine C McTyer
Karen Robards latest novel is the best one in quite a while. Her last two novels have been some of her worst, but this one had all of her trademarks in it. I really enjoyed it and am thankful she has finally gotten her act back togather. When you pay for a hardback you expect to get your money's worth.

Kate White is an ADA in Philadelphia, she is a new lawyer. She has fought and worked her way from poverty to where she is now. She has a 9 year old son and as she starts work in the DA's office her life finally looks rosy. Raised in the foster child program, she has been alone until she married at 18 and had Ben. Her husband left her when Ben was born and he was later killed.

Tom Braga is a homicide detective at the PPD, his brother works for the Sheriff's dept. as a deputy. He comes from a large family, he is the oldest. Divorced and alone he has decided to protect the tender parts of himself. But during a shootout in the courtroom he makes a connection to the woman held hostage.

On the first day of her new job she is in court, when everything goes to ****. The defendent somehow gets a gun and the killing begins, at the end she is held hostage by the defendent in a hall way where he has demanded a helicopter for her life. The unexpected happens when a former member of the gang she ran with when she was 15, turns up. He is one of the crimimals held in one of the holding rooms, he also is part of this escape. He quickly kills her tormentor and tells her she better help him out and get him out of jail or he will reveal her presence at a murder of an off duty cop, when they were young.

She is stunned not just to be saved, but by Mario, the thug, who killed the cop. That was the reason she left Baltimore and ran away at 15. Her life is totally messed up again by the same person and for the same reason. She must protect her son and herself, anyway she can.

Tom's brother is the deputy shot and left for dead in the room Mario was in. When he wakes up he tells Tom there were two men in the hall with her. She has admitted to killing her abductor. He and his partner feel something is not right. However, nothing can stop the desire for her that he feels. He knows there is something wrong but can he trust this woman who lies to him with every breath.

Dropping by her house late one afternoon to question her again, he saves her and her son from someone who seems to be confronting them. Once again he knows she is not telling him the truth. But he spends the night on her sofa anyway.

The story is fast-paced and doesn't get draggy, the plot is involved and the romance is hot. Everything you expect from a Karen Robards story. I really enjoyed it and encourage you to get it. Good Reading. I must admitt that I didn't read it immediately, because I wondered if it was any good. Glad I did.

Great suspense and romance
By Tracy Vest
Kate has spent the last 16 years trying to forget the night that her friends held up a convenience store and killed the clerk. Now a single mom and an ADA in Philadelphia, she is trying her first big case and in a bungled and deadly escape attempt, becomes a hostage in the court room. When her assailant is shot, she is face to face with Mario the friend who pulled the trigger all those years ago, and he insists that she help keep him out of jail, or he'll implicate her. She immediately becomes a media darling for taking out her attacker, but Tom Braga, the detective in charge, knows she's hiding something; and worse, he's falling for her and her son. When a series of break-ins and suspicious characters find their way to Kate's door, Tom appoints himself protector of both.

Robards keeps the suspense and action going from the first page to the last. Just when the reader thinks they know what will happen next, another surprise is tossed in. The chemistry between Kate and Tom is incredible, bringing a sense of authenticity into the story.

Amazon.com Review
The author of the ground-breaking science-fiction novels Neuromancer and Virtual Light returns with a fast-paced, high-density, cyber-punk thriller. As prophetic as it is exciting, Idoru takes us to 21st century Tokyo where both the promises of technology and the disasters of cyber-industrialism stand in stark contrast, where the haves and the have-nots find themselves walled apart, and where information and fame are the most valuable and dangerous currencies.

When Rez, the lead singer for the rock band Lo/Rez is rumored to be engaged to an "idoru" or "idol singer"--an artificial celebrity creation of information software agents--14-year-old Chia Pet McKenzie is sent by the band's fan club to Tokyo to uncover the facts. At the same time, Colin Laney, a data specialist for Slitscan television, uncovers and publicizes a network scandal. He flees to Tokyo to escape the network's wrath. As Chia struggles to find the truth, Colin struggles to preserve it, in a futuristic society so media-saturated that only computers hold the hope for imagination, hope and spirituality.

From Publishers Weekly
The founding father of cyberpunk again returns to the techno-decadent 21st century mapped in his other major works (Virtual Light, Neuromancer, etc.). As usual, Gibson offers a richly imagined tale that finds semi-innocents wading hip-deep into trouble. Colin Laney has taken a job in Japan to escape the revenge of his former employer, Slitscan, a kind of corporate gossip-mongerer on the Net that he has crossed out of scruples. Meanwhile, Chia Pet McKenzie is active in the fan clubs for Lo/Rez, a Japanese superstar rock duo; while visiting Japan to investigate some new rumors about the group, she is used to smuggle illegal nanoware to the Russian criminal underground. Both Laney and Chia get caught up in the intrigues swirling about the plans of Rez, one half of the band, to marry Rei Toei, an "idoru" (idol) who exists only in virtual reality. Gibson excels here in creating a warped but comprehensible future saturated with logical yet unexpected technologies. His settings are brilliantly realized, from high-tech hotel rooms and airplanes to the infamous Walled City of Kowloon. The pacing is slower than Virtual Light, but Gibson exhibits his greatest strength: intense speculation, expressed in dramatic form, about the near-term evolution and merging of cultural, social and technological trends, and how they affect character. Dark and disturbing, this novel represents no new departure for Gibson, but a further accretion of the insights that have made him the most precise, and perhaps the most prescient, visionary working in SF today. 100,000 first printing; $100,000 ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal
Colin Laney has a gift very much in demand. He can see well-hidden secrets through "nodal points" in the digital wake of commerce. In the not-so-distant future, fame and fortune and their analogs, scandal and ruin, are the true binding agents in a fractured, ungovernable world. Fired from his television tabloid job for an indiscretion, Laney is hired by the manager of the superpopular band Lo/Rez to go to post-earthquake Tokyo and divine the meaning behind singer Lo's intention to marry an idoru?a sort of a semi-sentient hologram. In alternating chapters, Chia, deeply involved in the Seattle chapter of the Lo/Rez fan club, picks up word of Lo's intentions over a computer network and is sent to investigate. On the way, she acts as the unwitting mule for a smuggler and winds up holding some very dangerous information. Though the plotting is weak and obvious, Gibson's writing is thick with atmosphere, dislocating the reader with a future that is both familiar and unsettling. Gibson's legion of fans will enjoy this fine sf thriller. For all fiction collections.?Adam Mazmanian, "Library Journal"

On the other hand...
By Jonah Cohen
As I scanned the other reviews of this book, I found that I couldn't agree less with many of them... but did agree with parts. Don't know what that says about different peoples' perceptions of this book.
I'll start by saying I liked all of Gibson's previous work and I liked Idoru, too. I was a little stunned to read some people who seemed to find it went on too long, as the hardback edition I read is under 300 pages (large print, breaks between chapters.) The plot is admittedly simple: rock star plans to marry a virtual reality character. When do computers become alive? --- recurring theme for Gibson.
Rather than tell it from the POV of these two lovebirds, he alternates chapters between the book's two main characters. One, Chia, is a teen fan. One, Laney, has the the strange talent of... to put it in contemporary terms, he can separate the signal from the noise when websurfing. (That >would< be a useful skill!)
Things I liked? While the plot is straightforward, I preferred it to more overarching books that start out well and have things crumble by the end. There have been plenty of those. Second, I found the charactrers all well defined and appealing, especially Laney, a sort of everyman who ends up in the middle of a lot of weird stuff.
And of course, there's Gibson's writing, powerful and at times even hypnotic. Each chapter reads like a story unto itself, but they do all move towards a clear resolution. Even the title seemed like a subtle commentary on the story. ("Idoru" = "I adore you", perhaps?)
I give it a big thumbs-up.

Gibson working his usual magic!

Gibson furthers his reputation as the master of cyberpunk in this story of a rock star, his super fan, an AI, a secret city, and a man able to see patterns in information on the Net.

Amazon.com Review
The idea that blood type plays a role in health, wellness, and personality wasn't exactly new when Dr. Peter D'Adamo came out with Eat Right 4 Your Type in 1997. The idea had been around for most of the 19th century, and had gained quite a bit of currency in Japan. But it was a startling idea to most Americans, who made the book a bestseller that was translated into more than 40 languages and spawned a similarly successful sequel, Cook Right 4 Your Type.

Now, Dr. D'Adamo--armed with new studies on genetic links between blood types, disease, and behavior--looks at the psychological and medical peculiarities that seem to predominate in one blood type or another. Type O's, for example, have lower than average amounts of a brain chemical called dopamine, leading to poor concentration, hyperactivity, and temper tantrums. A's tend to manufacture too much cortisol, a stress hormone that can lead to hypertension and has even been implicated in Alzheimer's disease and cancer. Type B's and AB's clear nitric oxide out of their systems faster, allowing them to calm down more rapidly than other blood types when stressed.

Dr. D'Adamo offers detailed lifestyle modifications for each type, including exercise programs, long lists of food to either seek out or avoid, and suggested treatment of specific illnesses. Some of this gets pretty arcane, including his recommendation of bladder wrack (a seaweed) for ulcer treatment of Type O's.

A big part of the appeal of this book series is that anyone reading it can become a participant by joining Dr. D'Adamo's blood-type registry at www.dadamo.com. Live Right for Your Type is peppered with testimonials from these registrants, giving the reader a sense that a true transformation in health, appearance, weight, and well-being is just a few diet and lifestyle changes away. --Lou Schuler

From Publishers Weekly
Author of the bestselling Eat Right 4 Your Type, D'Adamo delves more deeply into the influence of blood type in this follow-up volume, claiming not only that it determines the way individuals should eat, but also the way they should live. For each blood type he offers an extensive "prescription" for lifestyle changes, covering such issues as exercise, stress relief and sleep patterns, as well as supplements and foods. Type O, for instance, is advised to eat red meat and engage in aerobic exercise, while Type A is advised to focus on vegetables and try yoga. D'Adamo identifies the medical risk factors for each blood type, pointing out that, for example, As and ABs are at greater risk for developing cancer, while Os may be more vulnerable to mood disorders or destructive behaviors. In addition to his "prescriptions for living," D'Adamo offers a soup-to-nut diet plan for each blood type, complete with explanations of why various foods work for or against the body. While D'Adamo's plan is meticulously researched, readers may balk at the complexity not only of his text but also of the diet itself, which may create kitchen clashes when individuals of several blood types share meals. This comprehensive, fascinating theory will suit the nutrition-committed, but readers seeking a quick fix to weight and health problems may be left in a daze. (Jan.)

If You Liked Eat Right for Your Type, You Will Adore This Book
By Donald Mitchell
I thought that Eat Right for Your Type was one of the most helpful self-help health books I had ever read. Live Right for Your Type is much more valuable than that one. If you have read neither, read this one. If you have read and liked Eat Right for Your Type, you will find this book a great improvement on that one.
If your life seems strangely out of kilter and you and your doctors can't quite put your finger on what's wrong, I strongly urge you to read this book. It may well contain important clues for creating more "wellness" for you from the correct application of self-discipline in your eating and activities. The basic weakness of most scientific studies and almost all health books is that they look at average results for the whole population. The studies cited in this book are based on seeing major differences in the body chemistries of people with different blood types. In the same way that you can drown in an average of six inches of water (if that average expresses a range from 10 feet deep to half an inch), the average health advice can make your health worse in some cases.
Eat Right for Your Type was first published in 1996. That pioneering book summarized hundreds of research studies to define healthful eating for people with each different blood type. The underlying mechanism for this relationship is that your blood type influences your body chemistry in ways that create vulnerability or resistance to disease and an efficiently operating body. The four blood types are O, A, B, and AB. Type O people need the most animal protein (especially beef. Type A people need lots of vegetables. Type B people should eat a varied diet. Type AB people should eat smaller, more frequent meals.
Based on that book, many people reported remarkable gains in health, vitality, and weight loss after changing what they eat. In my case, my weight is now 31 pounds less than on my old way of eating (one that my Mother, who has Type A blood, had encouraged all my life -- but I am a Type O person). Many such case histories are reported in Live Right for Your Type.
Live Right for Your Type includes all of the diet information of Eat Right for Your Type, and adds to it insights into personality development, stress management, digestion, disease, and aging. Space does not permit explaining each of these links here, but personality traits are related to different ways that brain chemicals are created and processed by people with different blood types. Type O people, for example, are more easily stimulated into "fight or flight" responses and stay in them longer.
Genetic influences are the beginning of how these factors influence you. Your genes for blood type and other traits come from your parents. From these genes, you get a phenotype (one of the four blood types), a secretion status (whether you secrete antigens into your other bodily fluids or not, as well as into your blood), a Rhesus Factor (positive or negative), and your MN blood type (MM, NN, or MN). All of these concepts are well explained in the appendix of the book. There are also instructions for how you can send away to be tested so you will know what your characteristics are (a total cost of $51.40). In the main body of the book are many explanations of how each of these factors have been associated with the different aspects of life.
The heart of the book though comes in four sections where all of the information about each of the four main blood types is summarized. Yup, there I was in the Type O group with my quick temper, inclination to stay stressed out once stressed, oversensitivity to caffeine and alcohol, impulsiveness to create variety, and blissful reaction to exercise. Dr. D'Adamo definitely had me pegged.
To me the greater insight was when I looked at the type for my wife. I had become concerned about some health vulnerabilities she was experiencing. Yup, there they were. And the things that help her were the items listed. I heaved a big sigh of relief. Whew! It's natural.
If you want to take all of this further, there are instructions in the book for how to get more instructional material and to order special food supplements for each blood type. Normally, I find such offerings offensive. In this case, I had the opposite reaction. I don't know where else to get information that will help me, and I want to know more.
Unlike many books that are based on one study or one hypothesis, this book is built on hundreds of studies. These are cited in the back of the book. Although I did not look any of these up, these seemed to be from reputable sources. There is some speculation in the book. I was fascinated to see that some of the brain chemistry related genes are located next to the blood type genes in DNA. We don't know enough yet to know what that means. It may mean nothing, but it is certainly interesting to think about.
After you have finished following advice in this book and feeling better, I suggest that you think about people you care about who are potentially living and eating in ways that don't match their blood types. Please do share this book with them. You will be giving a very precious gift.
Live more naturally, in keeping with your true physical self!

Proof is in the pudding... so to speak.
By Aaron G. Zeller
I've read reviews both good and bad on the idea of the blood-type diet. I'm not going to get into the theory behind all that for the sake of brevity but will just focus on my experience, which to me is the most important. For a decade I have been concerned with health, diet, fitness, and nutrition. I've practiced regular exercise, cooking for myself the majority of the time, and eating healthy, fresh, and organic foods as often as possible. I ate fresh fruits and vegetables multiple times per day as well. I shop mainly at Whole Foods and farmers markets and when I ate meat, it was the best quality stuff that I could get. I am a male in my mid-thirties and have never been anywhere near over-weight. On the contrary, I am tall and quite thin, but not a rail. I did not start this diet to lose weight and actually losing muscle mass was a concern of mine when starting this diet.

For my entire life I have struggled with drastic swings in energy level and mental clarity (brain-fog) throughout any given day, especially after meals. I had heard positive things about the blood-type diet years ago from a co-worker. One morning, after having plenty of rest for a couple of days, I woke up, yet again, with no energy. I literally said to myself, "There's no good reason for this. I've had enough!" And there and then I decided to give the blood-type diet a try. I decided to go all out for one month and then go from there.

My blood-type is A, so I was quite dismayed when I looked at the A-type diet and saw that at it's strictest adherence level, it's pretty much a vegan diet. My initial reaction was actually one of slight anger, but I would not be swayed and continued on. I am very glad that I did. For years I have limited my consumption of dairy and wheat, because I had some adverse reactions to them- nothing serious, but I noticed that too much wheat made me crash and some dairy gave me lousy gas after eating it. That's not to say that I completely cut them out, but I limited them considerably, and it turns out that my gut feeling was a good one.

In a nutshell, my brain-fog and energy swings are now gone. Turns out that they were my body's way of telling me it didn't like what it was getting (actually, it was my body's reaction to struggling to digest the food that I was eating, which is the main point behind the diet). I thought that these swings were just a part of living, but it turns out that life doesn't have to be that way. I also HAD a problem with over-production of mucous since I was a child, which is genetic, and that too has been remedied. I breath and think much more clearly and consistently. My moods are much more stable and consistent and I deal with stress much more effectively. I wake up in the morning with energy, which was rarely the case before. I feel better than I ever have in my life, and this is helping me to be the best me that I can be on a consistent basis. All this, and I noticed an improvement on day one of the diet and it just kept getting better until it leveled off about two weeks in. I am now in the 7th week and have no plans of going back. I could talk AT LENGTH about the subtleties, but won't go on.

Lastly, I've purchased most of the stuff that Dr. D'Adamo has written. While I would recommend reading everything, I recommend reading this book first along with the pocket-guide for your specific type. It is newer, a bit more fine-tuned, and more pertinent to total life-style, all the while still having plenty of info on diet and nutrition. And contrary to arguments I've read, this book is extremely well researched and has footnotes to medical studies for every suggestion he makes. It is quite in-depth, even more so than "Eat Right For Your Blood Type". As I read, I keep finding explanations for why I've reacted in certain ways to certain foods and activities for my entire life. It's been very nice to have an explanation for so many things.

I am still fine-tuning/personalizing this diet and will be for many, many months to see what level of adherence suits me best. I have been very strict with it thus far and feel INCREDIBLE, but will slowly and methodically try eating some more neutral foods here and there to see how I react to them, as now, when I eat something that "my body doesn't like" I feel it within an hour. What a difference this has made in my quality of life!

This book details a very effective plan to optimize health
By Edna
Speaking as a person who has been following the diet as put forth in the author's original, now classic book "Eat Right for Your Type" for over three years, I can tell you unequivocally that this diet has the power to profoundly change your quality of life and health for the better! I originally went on the blood type diet in 1997 because I was morbidly obese and needed to lose weight, but I have stayed on it and will stay on it for life because it has given me very deep health benefits that I never could have predicted or realized without it. The new book "Live Right for Your Type" goes into great detail on how to further refine the diet and exercise plan in order to minimize weaknesses inherent to your blood type and maximize your strengths, resulting in achieving optimal health. It provides greatly expanded food lists that also offer even more further fine-tuning of the diet with secretor/non-secretor lists (read the book to find out what the heck I'm talking about there!!!), which can be an important key in the diet as well. Whether you start out on this journey in order to lose weight, you have a specific chronic problem that you want to try to address through diet (and the book goes into detail on overcoming many health challenges by customizing the diet to treat these, instead of using drugs as orthodox medicine so often resorts to without trying simple dietary means first), or you are healthy and you just want to support your health in the best way possible for a lifetime, I highly recommend this book. I went on the blood type diet to lose weight, which I have, but it has given me so much more-it has helped me overcome previously uncontrollable food cravings, made my menstrual cycles regular and helped alleviate PMS symptoms, helped tremendously with an upper-respiratory problem, given me great energy, and returned my body and mind to a feeling and sense of balance and deep health. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! I can't say enough about this book-do yourself a favor and buy it, read it and put it into practice! You'll never want to look back!
