Official and Confidential: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover, by Anthony Summers

Presidents yearned to fire him, but were daunted by his storehouse of damaging secrets. Public officials and private citizens lived in fear of his illegal surveillance and harassment tactics. Now, in this ground-breaking, at times shocking biography, J. Edgar Hoover, the man who ruled over the FBI for nearly fifty years, emerges definitively as one of the greatest menaces of our times.

Official and Confidential, by the award-winning investigative journalist and author Anthony Summers, is the first book to expose the public and the private J. Edgar Hoover. Other biographers have hinted at the dark secrets in the Director's life, but Summers courageously discloses the truth. After conducting more than eight hundred interviews and obtaining access to previously concealed documents, Summers has created a chilling portrait of a legendary figure who blatantly abused the public trust.

* J. Edgar Hoover, Summers establishes, was a closet homosexual and transvestite. Mafia bosses obtained information about Hoover's sex life and used it for decades to keep the FBI at bay. Without this, the Mafia as we know it might never have gained its hold in America.

* J. Edgar Hoover shamelessly accepted gifts and free lodging from millionaire oilmen, and appropriated FBI facilities for his personal use.

* J. Edgar Hoover influenced the course of World War II by ignoring an early warning about Pearl Harbor.

* J. Edgar Hoover used his knowledge of John F. Kennedy's womanizing to ensure that Lyndon Johnson became Vice President. He relied on dirty tricks to stay in office under Kennedy and subverted the Warren Commission's probe into the investigation of his death.

* J. Edgar Hoover himself was the target of a Watergate-era burglary attempt - and perhaps even a murder plot.

With these and other astonishing disclosures, Summers defines a man and his times. He explores Hoover's troubled youth as the son of a mentally ill father and a highly demanding mother, and the development of the obsessive behavior that dominated his later years. Summers takes the reader on an extraordinary journey, as a zealous young lawyer rebuilds an ineffectual corps of agents into a massive force capable of police-state tactics. With riveting detail, Summers documents Hoover's behind-the-scenes role in war and peace through fifty years and eight presidential administrations.

Richly anecdotal, meticulously researched Official and Confidential depicts some of the most controversial and colorful events of our century. Here is a disturbing lesson in how one man was able to abuse his position of power and change the course of American history.

Review
"I read Official and Confidential with mounting horror, fascination, revulsion... Enthralling" -- Paul Theroux "Summers' book is not just a history of a single hero-sized hypocrite, it is a history of a vast national delusion" -- Hilary Mantel Spectator "The exposure we have been waiting for these last forty years" -- Norman Mailer "Garbage... Innuendo, lies" -- Cartha DeLoach, former close aide to Hoover "The book is more exciting, and more damning, than the film...This is bold, excoriating, unmissable stuff." Independent on Sunday

A Man of Contradictions
By W. S. McKenzie
Anthony Summers presents J. Edgar Hoover as a man who insisted his agents lead a monastic life style while he enjoyed good whisky, gambling, and free vacations. He vilified homosexuals while himself involved with a male partner and he was capable of cross-dressing at private parties. He portrayed himself as the bulwark against crime yet coddled the Mafia and resisted any attempt at stopping their illegal activities. Ranted against communism but diverted resources to concentrate on building files on U.S. Congressmen and politicians without effectively stopping the Soviet intelligence attack throughout the cold war.

It is a frightening story of political maneuvering, blackmailing and excesses solely to maintain power. Summer's book includes extensive notes and bibliography. Written in 1993 it does not deal with the great failures that have been revealed in the past fifteen years such as the Robert Hanssen and Aldrich Ames cases. It does imply that Hoover's emphasis of show and power could have resulted in the FBI functioning to fit his image and maintain his power base at the expense of protecting American Security.

Fascinating and eye-opening
By C. J. Conrad
A truly interesting book. I have to say that it changed my view on the legendary man, and opens my eyes to how power corrupts. It's a bit long, but I'd recommend this to anyone interested in American politics in the 20th century.

The unelected government
By TLR
A fascinating expose of Hoover's personal and professional life, with lots of tantalizing anecdotes like this one:

Billy Byars Sr., Humble Oil millionaire from Tyler, Texas, was very close to Hoover. Phone logs show that Hoover called only three people the afternoon President Kennedy was shot: Robert Kennedy, the head of the Secret Service, and Byars. Byars Sr., is dead. His son, Billy Jr., told Summers in 1988 how close his father was to Hoover. Hoover would talk constantly about his bad relations with the Kennedys. He says he once asked him about the assassination. "I asked him, 'Do you think Lee Harvey Oswald did it?' And he stopped and he looked at me for quite a long time. Then he said, 'If I told you what I really know, it would be very dangerous to this country. Our whole political system could be disrupted.' That's all he said, and I could see he wasn't about to say any more."

Being a supporter of gay rights, Hoover's personal life would normally be of no interest to me. But his public hypocrisy and persecution of anyone who didn't fit the Boy Scout ideal he had in his head (and his obvious inability to live up to that ideal) makes for a fascinating psycho-history, and helps us to understand many of his actions as FBI Director.

This book is also a warning to Americans to stop focusing so much time and energy on elected partisan officials, and to more closely examine the vast unelected government that continues no matter which party is in power.

The Beauty of Color, by Iman

From the beloved fashion icon and cosmetics entrepreneur, the first book to embrace global beauty and women of all ethnicities.

Few faces are as instantly recognizable as that of Iman's. She's been a groundbreaking supermodel for the world's top designers and a muse for photographers, and she is the founder of the world's most popular cosmetic brand for skin of color.

Now, in an era when the face of beauty has changed-and the most celebrated women in Hollywood include such stars as Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, and Lucy Liu-Iman delivers a new approach to makeup and skin care. With The Beauty of Color, she revolutionizes the way women of color can think about the way they look and feel. Iman resists categorizing people according to ethnicity, and instead embraces the whole range of skin color-light to dark. This is the first beauty and makeup book to truly address skin tones across the spectrum-Latina, Black, Asian, Indian, Native American, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, as well as women of mixed ethnicities.

Inspired by her two illustrious careers-first as a world-class supermodel and then as founder of two of the world's top cosmetics lines-Iman is uniquely aware of the difficulties women of color have always had with skin care and makeup. In The Beauty of Color, Iman teaches readers how to work with skin care regimens and palettes targeted to their exact skin tone and type.

With stunning color photographs and images on every page, the book itself is a work of beauty, featuring Salma Hayek, Tyra Banks, Venus and Serena Williams, and other celebrities, as well as ordinary women of all ages. Unique, informative, and creative, The Beauty of Color is not only the first book to show women of every shade how to look their very best, but is also a landmark celebration of global beauty.

From Publishers Weekly
Discovered when she was a university student in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1975 by photographer Peter Beard, Iman went on to become an international supermodel. To address the needs of women of color, she launched a line of cosmetics, Iman, in 1994, and with this beautifully illustrated coffee-table book geared to black, Hispanic, Middle Eastern and Asian women, and timed to coincide with the debut of her second cosmetic line, she's poised to become the voice of beauty for this underrepresented group of women. In a conversational tone, Iman shares solutions to basic makeup and skin care quandaries (how to use blush, test foundation and choose tools) and debunks myths (dark skinned women don't need sunblock, ethnicity determines skin color). Other sections show how to "get the look" from "Ghetto Fab" to "So Fresh So Clean." Gorgeous photographs of well-known faces (Salma Hayek, Tyra Banks, Ling) with personal tidbits of advice and real women makeovers, from teens to women over 50, round out the offerings. Fun and flirty, with a confidential, insider feel, this combination of celebrity and self-improvement, capped with artistic portraits of women famous and not, indicate another success for Iman.

Great, in depth look into mameup.... Especially for beginners. I'd love for her to update, though, given all the new makeup techniques. I love how she gives detailed information about skin tone.

The splendor of diversity
By A reader
Most beauty books seem to rehash the same ideas or showcase looks that can be created by anyone who is somewhat familiar with makeup. This book is refreshingly different, and how! An immense amount of thought and creativity has gone into putting this book together. Iman and her team have gone into great lengths to portray a wide variety of looks on a broad spectrum of women. The makeup is so artfully done that you could come up with your own ideas by putting together components of several looks.

Another plus about this book is that the author doesn't resort to a common book-bulking tactic used by many cosmetics mavens. Here you don't see layouts of bare-faced (or nearly so) women with inane captions like "look how beautiful she is with only eyeliner". I think many women look to beauty books to give us creative inspiration. If we looked good w/o any goop on our face, we'd know it by now, saved a lot of time and $$$ and not bothered with makeup books. "The Beauty of Color" really delivers the goods. Congratulations to Iman (and team!) for a job well done!

A Good Book For Creative Ways to Help You Create a New Look For Yourself
By Dad of Divas
This book had a ton of great tips for anyone that knows how to minimally sew. All of the items that they talk about are low cost ways to change the way that you look and help you to see yourself in more of a Chic way. The book itself was well laid out, and I liked the fact that there were things that you could do with a sewing machine, but also by hand. For me, there were a number of things that I would not be able to do within my own home due to the fact that I do not have a sewing machine at this point and neither my wife nor I really know a lot about how to using one either. I do see this though as a great book for someone who is into sewing and knows their way around a sewing machine.

That being said though there are quite a number of things (I would say about half, that can be done by hand, which makes the book well balanced in my perspective. It would have been interesting to also see if she could have come up with some ideas for guys as well, but I know that was not the intent of this book.

All-in-all this was a great book for a fashionista that enjoys using her own creativity to develop a whole new look for herself.

Style for the Craft-challenged
By Story Circle Book Reviews
A teacher once approached me at my children's Back to School night, saying, "You look crafty! I could really use some sewing help." I've never figured out if that was a compliment, an insult or a clever teacher trick, but I know I was a bit embarrassed to admit that I am, in fact, craft-challenged. I've always liked the idea of being able to whip up a meaningful present or unique keepsake, but my attempts at knitted socks and baby quilts have all ended badly (and expensively.)

My mistake was not having a book like Chic on a Shoestring. This book contains exactly what it advertises: easy to make, vintage-style projects that won't cost you lots of time or money. Author Mary Jane Baxter recommends starting a collection of vintage items, like buttons, lace and scrap fabrics, so that you can make something truly unique. This means you can follow her patterns more than once and get a completely different result each time.

In my first read-through, I bookmarked ten projects I wanted to try, such as a fabric flower brooch and scrap lace scarf. Skills required: cutting, folding, measuring, ironing, and sewing in a straight-ish line (by hand or machine.) There are clear photos of each step to help you along, as well as sample shots of the finished products.

The first project I tackled was the tea towel apron. In the time it took to watch a movie, I was able to pull it off with about five dollars worth of supplies found at a discount store. My young daughter and I also made the vintage fabric headbands, and plan to make more as gifts for her friends. I pulled out my sewing machine, but never even had to deal with re-threading the bobbin. For the absolute novice, Baxter also includes a few pages in the front of the book to explain the sewing techniques and vocabulary used.

Some of the projects require a level of "chic" beyond me, but those were fun to look at, too. Even if you are an expert crafter, I expect you'll find ideas for accessories and gifts that are new. This would be a fun gift for a teenager with a flair for fashion, or for a beginning crafter.

Amazon.com Review
Written by Patricia T. O'Conner, an editor at the New York Times Book Review, Woe Is I gives lighthearted, witty instruction on the subject most of us dreaded in school--grammar. Discussion is brief and concise, and much more engaging than the grammar books you may remember. With chapter titles such as "Woe is I: Therapy for Pronoun Anxiety," "Your Truly: The Possessive and the Possessed," "Verbal Abuse: Words on the Endangered List," "Comma Sutra; The Joy of Punctuation," and "Death Sentence: Do Cliches Deserve to Die?," O'Conner proves that even grammar can make for entertaining reading.

From Library Journal
This grammar book has a twist?it's fun. O'Connor, a copy editor and book reviewer for the New York Times and guest columnist for William Safire, gives readers a witty and humorous look at grammar and the oddities of the English language in a way that doesn't intimidate or bore the reader. Chapter headings offer such gems as "Plurals Before Swine," "Comma Sutra," and "The Compleat Dangler." And what makes this book such a pleasure to read are whoppers of sloppy usage such as "Born at the age of forty three, the baby was a great comfort to Mrs. Wooster" and cliches like "mass exodus. As opposed to an exodus of one? In most cases, exodus alone is enough." Highly recommended.?Lisa J. Cihlar, Winfield P.L., Ill.

Review
In short, the book is useful. There is precisely enough (and no more) wit and illustrative humor. It's like Strunk and White combined with S.J. Perelman--none of whom would have had the slightest objection. -- New York Times Book Review, Daniel Pinkwater

Useful and fun
By Arsen Azizyan
This is an essential handbook for any grammar Nazi. Prepare to have many persistent doubts dispelled and nagging questions settled - not only about grammar and spelling, but also pronunciation (including that of the word "pronunciation"). This book will help you feel even more annoyingly superior to the uneducated unfortunates around you.

What's more, the sample sentences in the book are almost worth the price by themselves. "A gradual crescendo in the percussion section reached a climax that woke the audience." "When he's not fighting crime, Bruce dresses like a normal adult."

These days, as our entire nation has forgotten the use of the apostrophe, everyone could use at least one grammar book on their shelves, and I can't think of a clearer and friendlier one than this.

Clear, concise, helpful
By J. Fuhrman
This is by far the best book on grammar I've ever read. Many are glorified glossaries (which can be good at times), but Woe is I provides you with information that is presented in a more narrative approach that helps you retain the information. However, the way the book is organized into small chunks within the chapters allows you to go back and find information easily. Don't skip any chapters, even if you think that it might be dull or that you have those concepts down. I almost did. But once I got a few paragraphs in, I found myself continuing on and picking up all kinds of great information along the way.

The presentation is also great. O'Conner keeps things from getting dull with her sense of humor.

Best ever!

As a former teacher of English, I have numbers of texts and smaller books on various aspects of this language. This book is bar far the most used, best written incredible guide I have ever seen, owned or used. It is incredible. I have given copies to all five of my grandchildren, one of whom is twenty- one and a college junior and the other four are teenagers.

This is sheer brilliance, printed. Just add crayons.
By Andrew
OMG! I've scribbled away on every sheet of paper that I've ever had in front of me. No pen, pencil or crayon has ever survived in my immediate vicinity. And this book NOURISHES the desire to color and doodle!. Oh, I really wish I could rewind the clock decades to when I had a single digit age, to a lazy, sunny day with nothing better to do, a coffee can full of pencils and a sharpener and all the blue freezie-pops I could eat, and this amazing coloring book in front of me. This is sheer genius, printed and shared with the world. Inspired. Brilliant. Genius. Seriously, this is something to be treasured. Thank you, Souris, for this amazing book. It's gonna get destroyed. And then I'll get another and another, for all the kids on my xmas list.

It looks like EXACTLY what I like to doodle and observe
By Braxton Simpson
I'm a 16 year old with a very artistic and creative mind and I went searching for a coloring book to not only color, but to provide me with inspiration for my own artwork. The cover for this book is what grabbed my attention. It looks like EXACTLY what I like to doodle and observe. The sample of this book on Amazon only had a few pictures to judge, but the reviews promised a book full of beautiful artwork to improve upon with color.

When I got the book, I excitedly opened it up and soaked in all the beautiful artwork.

Now some of the art in this book is too good to color than I tore it out and hung it on my wall, while some other pieces are too complicated to color without fine tip art products. And of course, if you've read other reviews, there are two pages of just black ink. But the rest of the book is perfect for coloring and really lets you add your own touch to other artist's work.

The book is amazing and creative and a very good idea, if there was ever another collection of works like these I would by the book in a heartbeat.

A treasure of contemporary art!
By Graham Stewart
I originally bought this book for my nine year old daughter but after looking at it I think I am going to keep it for myself. I am not an expert on the contemporary art 'scene' (I am not as hip as I once thought I was) but this book is a great primer for what is happening right now in art. The diversity of the works in this book are amazing! Pieces from graphic designers, cartoonists, street artists, and illustrators are included. I especially like the way that the author left the back side of the works blank except for the authors name and web page. That has been a coloring book pet peeve of mine ever since I was a kid. I have taken the time to explore some of the artists through their web pages and I am astounded at two things. First, I love seeing the artist's work the way that THEY decided to color it and I love learning more about each artist and seeing other examples of their work.

I teach middle school and I am going to have an opportunity to use this book in a few ways. I teach an elective to 7th and 8th graders, it is basically art for people who aren't artists. This book will be a tremendous resource for me to plan a unit on what is happening in art right now. Also, have you ever given a 7th grader crayons and just let them color? I never have but I am eager to give my students examples of contemporary art from this book to color as I teach them about specific artists or styles. What a great learning tool for me AND the students.

Looks like I am gong to be buying a few of these books for my students. Can I get a bulk discount? :-)

From School Library Journal
YA-- Ben Potter, successful lawyer and possible U. S. Supreme Court nominee, is found dead in his office--suicide or murder? All of the police evidence points to foul play, and his beautiful young wife, Talia, stands trial for a crime she claims she didn't commit--or did she? Paul Madriani defends Talia, but, in doing so, exposes a part of his own life that he would like to forget. This gripping, fast-paced novel will hold YAs' attention from beginning to startling conclusion.
- Robert Lisker, W.T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA

From Kirkus Reviews
A year after he's fired from the California law firm of Potter, Skarpellos by Ben Potter, who's found out he's having an affair with Ben's wife Talia, corporate-turned-criminal lawyer Paul Madriani is asked to join Talia's defense--on a charge of murdering Ben on the eve of his nomination to the Supreme Court. It's the other partner, Tony (``the Greek'') Skarpellos, who inveigles Madriani to put aside two other investigations--helping county medical examiner George Cooper figure out who abandoned his daughter to burn to death after a car crash, and defending high- profile hooker Susan Hawley, who doesn't want to implicate her well- placed clients in ``boinkgate'' even if she's granted immunity--and to sign on as assisting counsel to nitwit glamourpuss Gibert Cheetam, who promptly runs Talia's defense into the ground and jumps ship after the grand jury indicts her. So Madriani, his affair with Talia making him painfully vulnerable, takes over as chief counsel, infuriating his estranged wife Nikki even before he realizes that Skarpellos, who stands to inherit the hugely profitable firm if Talia takes the rap, has set him up. Martini (The Simeon Chamber, 1988), whose early scenes could have used some advice from assisting counsel too (the obligatory between-the-sheets flashback is introduced by noting ``the cold wetness of my own passions, a small portion of which had pooled in the creases of the sheets beneath where her loins had rested''), rouses himself for the well-paced trial scenes, which heat up even further when news of the Talia/Madriani affair reaches the ears of the presiding judge, determined that no mistrial's going to stand in the way of his reelection--and when Madriani decides to pin his hopes on an all-out assault on Skarpellos. The final surprise, though, is eminently guessable. Martini is no Scott Turow--his characters are thinner, his prose flabbier--but his legal intrigue will probably keep you up just as late. Indeed, Compelling
By Kindle Customer
This book is the first I've read of Mr. Martin's, but will not be the last. The drama of the trial, with all the interplay of the lawyer's and the judge, unfairness of some of the rulings, was eye opening. Explanations of law and courtroom procedures was well explained throughout the book. I am an avid reader of good fiction, and thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. On to the 2nd in sequence.

A good introduction to Steve Martini universe
By Julio Luz
The plot is ingenious. It's difficult to solve the mystery until the closing chapter. But, it's plausible and wrapped up in a interesting way. At least, I thought so. As a foreigner, it's interesting to appreciate the American way of doing justice in action.

A man named Mohammed sits in a café in Vienna, about to propose a deal to a Colombian. Mohammed has a strong network of agents and sympathizers throughout Europe and the Middle East, and the Colombian has an equally strong drug network throughout America. What if they were to form an alliance, to combine all their assets and connections? The potential for profits would be enormous-and the potential for destruction unimaginable.

In the Brave New World of terrorism-where anybody with a spare AK-47, a knowledge of kitchen chemistry, or simply the will to die can become a player-the old rules no longer apply. No matter what new governmental organizations come into being, the only truly effective ones are those that are quick and agile, free of oversight and restrictions . . . and outside the system.

Way outside the system.

In a nondescript office building in suburban Maryland, the firm Hendley Associates does a profitable business in stocks, bonds, and international currencies, but its true mission is quite different: to identify and locate terrorist threats, and then deal with them, in whatever manner necessary. Established with the knowledge of President John Patrick Ryan, "the Campus" is always on the lookout for promising new talent, its recruiters scattered throughout the armed forces and government agencies-and three men are about to cross its radar.

The first is Dominic Caruso, a rookie FBI agent, barely a year out of Quantico, whose decisive actions resolve a particularly brutal kidnap/murder case. The second is Caruso's brother, Brian, a Marine captain just back from his first combat action in Afghanistan, and already a man to watch. And the third is their cousin . . . a young man named Jack Ryan, Jr.

Jack was raised on intrigue. As his father moved through the ranks of the CIA and then into the White House, Jack received a life course in the world and the way it operates from agents, statesmen, analysts, Secret Service men, and black ops specialists such as John Clark and Ding Chavez. He wants to put it all to work now-but when he knocks on the front door of "the Campus," he finds that nothing has prepared him for what he is about to encounter. For it is indeed a different world out there, and in here . . . and it is about to become far more dangerous.

From Publishers Weekly
While last year's Clancy novel, Red Rabbit, hit #1 first week out, sales reportedly were down from previous books, as were the thumbs of critics, who found the book slow, talky and lacking in action. In an effort to repair the damage as well as to revitalize his long-running Jack Ryan series, Clancy has scrapped his usual one-novel-every-two-years cycle to deliver a shorter, swifter tale featuring not Ryan but Ryan's son, also known as Jack, as well as two of young Jack's cousins, fraternal twins Dominic and Brian Caruso, the former an FBI agent, the latter a Marine. All three are recruited to a privately funded vigilante organization, Hendley Associates, that aims to strike at America's enemies-particularly, terrorists-when the Feds can't or won't. The narrative divides into two parts. The first concerns the training of the three, with young Ryan basically pushing his way into the organization while Dominic is signed on after taking the law into his own hands by shooting a child killer, and Brian after demonstrating smarts during combat in Afghanistan. Their grapplings with the moral and logistical demands of their new jobs alternate with a villains' plot, as Islamic terrorists cut a deal with Colombian drug smugglers, sneak into the U.S. and move toward their killing-field objectives, four shopping malls in mid-America. The plot strands tie up in a terrifically exciting sequence, the novel's highlight, as Dom and Brian, by chance shopping at one mall, take down four of the terrorists. But the terrorists kill scores of innocents, so the rest of the novel details American vengeance-the teeth of the tiger-as the twins fly to Europe, followed by Jack, to take out several of the terrorists' handlers. This isn't Clancy's strongest novel, but it's a big improvement over Red Rabbit. Geopolitical analysis and operational details overwhelm the few action sequences, perhaps to the chagrin of many Clancy fans, but the author knows this stuff like no one else and delivers it all in his inimitable clipped manner. Clancy's smart flag-waving and targeting of terrorists will please many, of course, and leaves plenty of room for sequels. Expect generally satisfied fans.

From the Inside Flap
A man named Mohammed sits in a café in Vienna, about to propose a deal to a Colombian. Mohammed has a strong network of agents and sympathizers throughout Europe and the Middle East, and the Colombian has an equally strong drug network throughout America. About the Author
Over the course of twelve novels, Tom Clancy's "genius for big, compelling plots" and "natural narrative gift" (The New York Times Magazine) have established him as one of the preeminent storytellers of our time. His latest book, however, is perhaps the most remarkable one of all, and the most timely. Filled with the exceptional realism and cutting-edge authenticity that are his hallmarks, this is Clancy at his best-and there is none better.

Feels like half a book
By Jayson Olson
Being the Clancy fan that I am, I make this 3 star judgment in accordance to his other works.

In a post 9/11 world, Clancy unveils a frightening possible reality in such a way that you almost wonder why it hasn't already happened, or perhaps it's a premonition of things to come with the mindset of terrorists.

It appears that a middle eastern faction very similar to Al Qaeda has sets its sites once again on American soil. But this time it's not a well known target, and not achieved through dramatic or expected means. The terrorists have teamed up with the drug lords of South America in a "I'll scratch your back, if you'll scratch mine" plot to strike at the American people where both partners can realize the fruits of each others labors.

Taking advantage of our lax southern borders with Mexico, a covert team of middle eastern terrorists are supplied with weapons and means of infiltration through tried and true drug trafficking chains overseen by the Columbians.

Once here on American soil, they strike yet again in a heinous fashion showing that no American is safe, not even those is small rural cities.

Enter Jack Ryan Jr., a hot track financial analyst who using his mind and black 'agency' resources at his side able to track suspicious financial transactions that may be tied to the recent terrorist attack and just who the 'players' are. Also Jack's two cousins are recruited by the 'agency' as well as field agents who must administer swift and deniable justice.

Overall the book sets up a very convincing scenario and the means to track and follow and identify the bad guys is very interesting but not too technical.

The book was shorter than Clancy's other novels and the climax was very late and very short. This coupled with the fact that everyone is cousins and everything just happens to fall into place at the end may be a somewhat of a stretch, but begs for more.

How so? Well, I think this book is only half a book as that the South American drug lords are never seen or heard from again after the initial chapters and key in the overall plot development. It appears that since the book was short and the climax was compacted, that there is possibly a second sequel on the fast track right behind this one that will see our agents make the Columbian connection. The reader can only hope so, for I felt somewhat cheated and let down that so many threads were opened up and never addressed.

I expected more from Tom Clancy.

It's not just the teeth you have to worry about.
By S. M. Pringle
Like his father before him SHORTSTOP is finding his own way in the world and like his father is truly heading in the same direction as a spook but by a totally different route. I like Junior's character. He is very unique from his father in many ways but oh so similar in other ways. Great book and great series. Keep them coming.

Clancy needed to do some more development
By A. Burchfield
I've read all of Clancy's Ryan stories and found this one to be possibly his weakest.
... Near the end of Patriot Games, written in '87 but set in about '82 or '83, Jack Ryan jr. was born- he's now 23 and a recent college graduate which would make the story set in 2006 or so yet the war in Iraq (I thought Clancy met the real one, not his fictional Gulf War)is characterized as recent. Sometimes refered to as Jack, sometimes as Ryan or even Junior by the author our hero has determined that a financial business is really a front for an inteligence operation and he talks his way into a job during a meeting with the boss (a former senator who knew his father, the now retired president Ryan).
I didn't mind the totally off the books covert intelligence unit (only the ex- president and a few others even know it exists)but you get a story that isn't really well developed. The Campus has existed for just over a year hacking into CIA and everyone else's computers and communications tracking down various bad guys and their financing. About this time the bunch decides to move into full operation by recruiting a couple of twin brothers solely on the strength of the Marine brother having killed a few guerilla fighters in Afghanistan and the FBI brother administering a little on the spot justice to ONE child rapist/ murderer. I wasn't really clear about how they were selected, didnt like the way their superiors were unsure how good these two would be until they performmed a hit or two and I really didn't like the way they just happened to be Ryan jr's cousins ( the exact relation was never explained, I didn't know either Jack Sr. or Cathy Ryan had siblings, and what family history you do get is weak)
The best part of the book (if you can call it that)is the terrorist group allying itself with Columbian smugglers, not really liking each other but seeing benefits in each aiding the other. After the Columbians smuggle a few terrorist teams into the U.S.you hear almost nothing more about them (will we in a future book?)but you do get a rather scary little bit about the terrorist groups shooting up a few shopping malls (Clancy used an airliner as a missle in 1994's Debt of Honor, it happened for real in 2001 this scenario is also plausible) The twins going after some of the Bad guys in Europe reads pretty well but this 431 page book reads like Clancy cut another 431 pages off at the end to serve as his next book.
