Evidence of haste
By Daniel L Pratt
This 2002 book is an abridgement of the excellent New Oxford American Dictionary (NOAD, published 2001), with a price in line with other college dictionaries. Unfortunately, there seem to be a few problem areas.
The first thing that will strike many college students and graduates is the almost complete absence of etymologies. A few of the more interesting ones are highlighted with the heading WORD HISTORY; for example, this is one of very few sources that make clear why the Dutch for "the cage" appears in English as DECOY. A few other etymologies appear with the heading ORIGIN. For the most part, you won't find any. It would seem that such information would add a lot to many entries, such as UBUNTU, TRIFFID, GROK, TOHUBOHU, and thousands more. One consequence is that the usage note for ESKIMO refers to a deleted etymology. Granted, the etymologies in most competitors have a lot of fluff; they'll show two of numerous older spellings of "dog" before implying that the trail grows cold in Old English; a simple "

Tan can relax. If The Joy Luck Club was an astonishing literary debut, The Kitchen God's Wife is a triumph, a solid indication of a mature talent for magically involving storytelling, beguiling use of language and deeply textured and nuanced character development. And while this second novel is again a story that a Chinese mother tells her daughter, it surpasses its predecessor as a fully integrated and developed narrative, immensely readable, perceptive, humorous, poignant and wise. Pearl Louie Brandt deplores her mother Winnie's captious criticism and cranky bossiness, her myriad superstitious rituals to ward off bad luck, and her fearful, negative outlook, which has created an emotional abyss between them. Dreading her mother's reaction, Pearl has kept secret the fact that she is suffering from MS. But as she learns during the course of the narrative, Winnie herself has concealed some astonishing facts about her early life in China, abetted by her friend and fellow emigree Helen Kwong. The story Winnie unfolds to Pearl is a series of secrets, each in turn giving way to yet another surprising revelation. Winnie's understated account--during which she goes from a young woman "full of innocence and hope and dreams" through marriage to a sadistic bully, the loss of three babies, and the horror and privations of the Japanese war on China--is compelling and heartrending. As Winnie gains insights into the motivations for other peoples' actions, she herself grows strong enough to conceal her past while building a new life in America, never admitting her deadly hidden fears. Integrated into this mesmerizing story is a view of prewar and wartime China--both the living conditions and the mind-set. Tan draws a vivid picture of the male-dominated culture, the chasm between different classes of society, and the profusion of rules for maintaining respect and dignity. But the novel's immediacy resides in its depiction of human nature, exposing foibles and frailties, dreams and hopes, universal to us all. Major ad/promo; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selections; first serial to Grand Street, Lear's, McCalls and San Francisco Focus; paperback sale to Fawcett/Ivy; author tour.

From School Library Journal
YA-- Fans of Tan's Joy Luck Club (Putnam, 1989) will love her powerful second novel. Here she creates an absorbing story about the lives of a Chinese mother and her adult American-born daughter. Pressured to reveal to the young woman her secret past in war-torn China in the 1940s, Winnie weaves an unbelievable account of a childhood of loneliness and abandonment and a young adulthood marred by a nightmarish arranged marriage. Winnie survives her many ordeals because of the friendship and strength of her female friends, the love of her second husband, and her own steadfast courage and endurance. At the conclusion, her secrets are uncovered and she shares a trust/love relationship with her daughter, Pearl, that was missing from both their lives. Some YAs may find the beginning a bit slow, but this beautifully written, heartrending, sometimes violent story with strong characterzation will captivate their interest to the very last page. --Nancy Bard, Thomas Jefferson Sci-Tech, Fairfax County, VA

From Library Journal
The Joy Luck Club ( LJ 2/1/89), Tan's remarkable and successful first novel, is followed by this chronicle of Chinese-American life, which shows Tan's growth as a writer. Pearl, the American-born daughter of immigrants, begins the tale with an uneasy visit to her mother for Grand Auntie Du's funeral. Misunderstanding runs deep between mother and daughter: Pearl is married with two young girls of her own, but her mother's life is largely incomprehensible to her. This leads to the large second part of the novel, told in mother Winnie's voice of her young womanhood in World War II-era China. Tan is a gifted natural storyteller. The rhythms of Winnie's story are spellbinding and true, without the contrivance common in many modern novels. Highly recommended. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 11/15/90; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selections; first serial to McCall's .

Relatable and authentic, but slightly drawn out
By Anastasiya Koroleva
Yet another all women cast ( just the main characters that is), personable, relatable. Winnie is your mother too, and so is Helen. Interesting insight into WWII period China, I have never seen any of it mentioned anywhere. Slightly too drawn out, character is well crafted but almost exagerrated

This is one of my favorite books! I love it. Amy Tan is such a great writer. This book brings you back to China where you get to experience life in an era of communism, what women went through, what life was like, and etc.

This book was predictable and slow. I pushed through it because so many others loved it, but I think Amy Tan is just not for me. I did not really care for The Joy Luck Club either.

The Silent Man (A John Wells Novel), by Alex Berenson

From the #1 New York Times– bestselling author comes another remarkable novel of espionage today— and right around the corner.

Alex Berenson’s The Faithful Spy was declared “one of the best spy stories ever told” (The Wall Street Journal), and The Ghost War “mesmerizing . . . an extraordinary achievement. Wells is a complex blend of smarts, scars, cynicism and wile. And the book’s imaginings seem not so much ‘ripped from the headlines’ as eerily destined to be set in type for tomorrow’s” (The News & Observer). Berenson’s third novel, however, is his most masterful yet.

It isn’t easy to steal warheads from the heart of Russia’s nuclear complex in Mayak. It requires a great deal of money, coordination, ingenuity, and sleight-of-hand, and just a touch of luck. But if you’re determined enough, anything is possible.

It’s been a rough few years for CIA agent John Wells. The undercover work in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the attack on the United States, the Chinese plot that could have led to war. Wells is exhausted, and his nights filled with disturbing dreams. But he knows he has no time for that. He has made many enemies, and the world won’t stay quiet for long.

Nevertheless, Wells is not prepared for what is about to happen. He and his colleague—and fiancée—Jennifer Exley are driving into work when traffic comes to a standstill, due to accidents on both bridges into Washington. A pretty big coincidence, he thinks, beginning to get a bad feeling—a feeling that only gets worse when he spots the red motorcycle zooming up between cars toward him. Before the day is over, several people will be dead or severely injured, Exley among them, and Wells will be a man possessed.

The attackers are Russian, and it is to Russia that Wells must follow the trail. He finds what he’s looking for—but also a great deal more. A plan of almost unimaginable consequences is in motion, and Wells has no idea if he has discovered it in time. The last few years have been rough indeed, but the next few weeks will be much, much worse.

Real-world threats, authentic details, a scenario as dramatic as it is chillingly plausible, Alex Berenson’s new novel is another “timely reminder of the extremely precarious way we live now” (The Washington Post).

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Berenson's well-plotted and thoughtful third thriller to feature CIA agent John Wells (after The Ghost War) finds Wells and his fellow CIA agent and fiancée, Jenny Exley, living happily together in Washington, D.C., content to devote themselves to fighting the forces of evil. One morning, while stuck in traffic on their way to CIA headquarters, men on motorcycles attack them in their minivan. Exley suffers a serious gunshot injury in an act of revenge by minions of Pierre Kowalski, an enemy from an earlier book. Meanwhile, jihadists bent on destroying America steal two small atomic bombs. These extremely clever villains, per Berenson's style, aren't mad dog idiots but credible characters with reasons, at least from their own perspective, to be doing the great evil they're planning. Fast and furious when it needs to be, this is a welcome addition to an excellent series. Berenson won an Edgar for his first novel, The Faithful Spy. (Feb.)

From Booklist
John Wells saves the world for the third time in as many books, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Islamist jihadists manage to steal some fissionable material out of a remote Russian weapons depot, intending to build a crude atom bomb to unleash on the great Satan. Meanwhile, Wells’ love interest is nearly killed by an old enemy, sending our dour, driven hero eastward on a one-man mission of vengeance, even as the terrorists head steadily westward with their awful freight. Wells has lost some of his promise as a devout Muslim action hero (The Faithful Spy, 2006), an intriguing premise completely jettisoned here. But while Wells has grown two-dimensional, the supporting cast of holy warriors and their reluctant assistants (such as Gregor, a pathetically hulking weak link on the weapons depot’s payroll) are fleshed out and motivated far more than your typical baddies. Oddly enough, it is the terrorists’ desperate nuclear caper, plausibly detailed and convincingly problematic, that keeps the reader caring, and guessing, until the end and that keeps this series in the first rank of international thrillers. --David Wright

Review
"Alex Berenson's third novel, The Silent Man, succeeds in seizing the attention from the start and never letting go until the end" New York Times "An exciting story and a timely one ... Berenson, a reporter for the New York Times, tells his story expertly. He has a sharp eye for detail, a good understanding of the "tradecraft" of the spy world and a talent for vivid writing ... He squeezes every drop of suspense out of the approaching nuclear holocaust" Washington Post "Berenson's well-plotted and thoughtful third thriller to feature CIA agent John Wells ... Fast and furious ... this is a welcome addition to an excellent series" Publishers Weekly

Somewhat Interesting But Too Formulaic
By Burgmicester
Alex Berenson has created the John Wells character who is not dissimilar from the Mitch Rapp creation by Vince Flynn. However, on the Wells character, Berenson has not fully developed a personality that engages the reader. The storyline is good enough, but the modern thriller formula is in full swing: pages 1-50 are the introduction and reference the past stories, 50-150 introduce the bad guys occasionally getting back to the good guys, mixed in is an event that is the catalyst to the story. Then half way through the book begin getting into the good stuff. I found myself skipping quickly through the write ups of why each Muslim decided to hate Americans. The first 200 pages could have been reduced to 25 and moved right into the meat of the story. Let's face it, it isn't the writing style that makes us want to read these types of stories, it's the story telling.

However, this thriller never really engages the reader in the meat and potatoes of the story either. It is contrived and stretched into something that doesn't feel real or exciting. I found myself hurrying through the book just to get to the end and to see what happened. There wasn't anything along the way that I found interesting or compelling. The characters were cardboard and standard issue. Some of the dialogue between Exley and Wells was forced.

There are many serial character storylines out there. This is just another that could be plugged and played with the others. Nothing special here, but if you are so inclined, it is a quick beach read.

just like that? "
By ReadingRover
A very quick read, but doesn't short the significant, or even the minor details that make this a compelling series, and group of characters. Get ready because the climaxes in the series often come about very quickly, and while satisfying for the most part, sometimes leave you thinking "is that it?", "it's over, just like that?". Berenson doesn't seem one to draw things out, much like his character John Wells - get to the point, do it quickly, and cover your bases! This is the third book in the series that I've enjoyed and don't plan on stopping now.

Amazon.com Review
"You can have the body you want," promises A. Scott Connelly, M.D., a physician, personal trainer, sports nutrition specialist, and sports-supplement designer. His "6-Pack Prescription" is a program of four six-week cycles (strength training, sculpting, fat burning, and maintenance/endurance), each with its own eating plan, exercise program, and optional supplementation. Six months, promises Connelly, will give you the body you want.

"To change how you look on the outside, you need to reverse what's happening on the inside" by reprogramming your body to manufacture muscle, says Connelly. He emphasizes "nutrient partitioning," the principle that "a metabolic traffic cop" directs nutrients into fat-burning muscles or parks them as stored fat. Ingredients and additives in the foods we eat cause nutrients to move into the fat-storage parking lot instead of the fat-burning expressway. He recommends eating plenty of high-fiber complex carbohydrates and low-fat protein, and eliminating processed foods containing fructose ("the Stealth bomber of sweeteners"). Although Connelly designed a line of supplements marketed by Met-Rx, he restricts his supplementation recommendations to one short chapter and does not push his own line. Connelly's exercise program focuses on weight training, with 20 exercises divided into four different weekly workout sessions. Illustrations of the exercises, which work all the major muscle groups, include both machine and free-weight options. Charts--both filled in with his prescription and blank for you to log your actual program--are provided for meal planning and exercise. --Joan Price

From Booklist
Gym owners and franchisees will flock to Connelly's side, as will manufacturers of strange supplemental substances such as HMB, DIM, and creatine monohydrate. With all the credentials in the world (and a body to boot), this physician-researcher underscores the truths of the most recent diet findings: that protein-fiber is the food key and weight training is the workout key. He calls his regimen a six-pack--four cycles of six weeks each, starting with strengthening, sculpting, then burning fat, and maintaining. There are series of power exercises, with explicit directions about sets and repetitions, and there are answers to obvious and complicated questions, such as the benefits of aerobics (not much, he says) and the need for stretching (ditto). Whatever works--and, with diligence and practice, this plan just might. REVWR

THIS PROGRAM WORKS!
By A Customer
I've been following the Body Rx program for 6 weeks now, and I've already lost over 2 inches from my waistline and added almost 1/2 inch of solid muscle to my upper arm measurement. I consider these results to be absolutely outstanding for a 43 year old male! When I first glanced through Boby Rx at the bookstore, it looked like a copycat of Body for Life by Bill Phillips. Although Body Rx is similar in styling and concept to Body for Life, I believe that Dr. Connelly's program is superior. I previously followed the Body for Life program (to the letter) and while I managed to lose 14 pounds in 12 weeks, 3 of those lost pounds were valuable muscle mass! With the Body Rx program I am now GAINING muscle mass while losing bodyfat. And I'm not spending a fortune on supplements either - a good protein powder is all you need. I highly recommed Dr. Connelly's program for anyone who's been disappointed with the results they've been getting on other programs. Just be sure to read it thoroughly and follow the program as outlined.

The scientific approach to rid your body of its fat.
By A Customer
Dr. A. Scott Connelly is a tremendously respected medical doctor, metabolic specialist, personal trainer, and nutritional engineer. He was the first person to develop the now famous Meal Replacement Powder; it was, of course, Met-Rx. Met-Rx revolutionized human nutrition, especially for those involved in athletic endeavors. Its a potent high protein, moderate carb, and low fat super food. Its design was based on research Dr. Connelly did with 'wasting' patients. It was designed to give a person a flow of protiens and amino acids for a sustained period of time to prevent catabolism. It has done its job well, and I've used the product with tremendous success.
I was surprised that he did not push the product at all and only mentioned it by name a couple of times in the book, as opposed to another famous supplement "guru" who suggests three servings of his product everyday. Dr.Connelly knows what he's talking about. He's helped star athletes and average Joes get the body they've always wanted. Body Rx offers new insights into human nutrition and how the body handles nutrients. Dr. Connelly shows why the so called 'fat gene' is not the reason America is getting fatter; it's the processing of foods and the removal of vital fiber. He shows the relation between fructose intake and increasing belt sizes. He puts nutrition back where it should be; that is, as the main determinant as to how your body will look--significantly more important than exercise. This has been known for a long time but other diet experts have pushed aerobics and high-carb diets as the way to lose fat. Dr. Connelly explains lucidly why they are full of hot air, and why most of these so called experts would never want to be seen by others in a bathing suit.
The exercise aspect of the program is reasonable but still rigorous. You work out 4 times a week --the right way!--for about an hour each time. The workouts are intense, but not to the point where you'll burn out. It is the type of program I used to lose over 50 lbs(my program was actually from the Owner's Manual out of a package of Met-Rx). The essence of the program is based on Dr. Connelly's extensive knowledge of the human body and nutrition. It's based on one simple premise: build muscle and give the bill to fat. If you follow this program to its end, you will succeed!!! By the way, you will never, ever, ever, be hungry on this program. He gives a list of certain foods that you can eat until you are full and satisfied, and he never wants you to eat dull, tasteless meals. His suggestions are fantastic. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

A change worth trying....
By A Customer
Like some of the other reviewers, I was on the Body for Life Program, but I didn't see the results I hoped to see with all the hard work I put in for 15 weeks! I switched to Body Rx, and I am on a refreshing start. The nutrition part is absolutely easy. I am eating so much I am scared. Being a female starting out with 130 lbs and in fairly good shape, I find it hard to eat 260 grams of yellow carbs because I am used to following diets that cut out starchy carbs. I am enjoying bananas, rice, pasta, potatoes, carrots, popcorn, and all the other foods that diet gurus say weren't good for you. This is the beginning of my third week, and with the way I am eating, I thought I would have balooned up. Instead, I feel stronger, went down 2 pounds and my body feels tighter. I have so many questions though, and that is why I give the book four stars. In the book Dr. Connelly give a toll-free number to call, but it is not in service. I posted many of my questions to his website, but no answer. I am not worried about the protein amount, or fiber, but the carbs do bother me as I also eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, and eating approximately 260 grams of additional carbs seems like a lot and I can't get it in sometimes. I can't wait for the sculting period because that's the amount of yellow carbs I am comfortable with. Also, I don't know that the once a week abs routine is enough, and what about the obliques?
But for all those of you who are skeptical, just give it a try. It is very simple, even the exercise routine. Before you know it, You have completed 5 exercises in the gym. Sometimes I have to force myself not to invent an exercise to add to the routine. When I leave, I feel a nice warm sensation all over, and I am sore the next two days, so I know I worked the muscle. I am following it to a "T" for now - no aerobics, and just four days of gym. I am a good size 8, but would like to be a six, or even a four (smile). I Think 6 months is a reasonable and believable time to get this accomplished. I will post my first 6week progess in November. Good Luck. Buy the book. This is doable and enjoyable.

Q is for Quarry: A Kinsey Millhone Novel, by Sue Grafton

Quarry, n.  An open excavation.
Quarry, v.  Transitive: To dig or take from. Intransitive: To delve into.
Quarry, n.  An object pursued or hunted; prey.

She was a "Jane Doe," an unidentified white female whose decomposed body was discovered near a quarry off California's Highway 1. The case fell to the Santa Teresa County Sheriff's Department, but the detectives had little to go on. The woman was young, her hands were bound with a length of wire, there were multiple stab wounds, and her throat had been slashed. After months of investigation, the murder remained unsolved.

That was eighteen years ago. Now the two men who found the body, both nearing the end of long careers in law enforcement, want one last shot at the case. Old and ill, they need someone to help with their legwork and they turn to Kinsey Millhone. They will, they tell her, find closure if they can just identify the victim. Kinsey is intrigued and agrees to the job.

But revisiting the past can be a dangerous business, and what begins with the pursuit of Jane Doe's real identity ends in a high-risk hunt for her killer.

Amazon.com Review
Private investigator Kinsey Millhone has served Sue Grafton well through 16 letters of the alphabet in a perennially popular series that occasionally breaks new ground but more often traverses familiar territory, as is the case here. Two old, ailing cops--one retired, the other disabled--try to breathe some life into an 18-year-old mystery that haunts them both for different reasons. They enlist Kinsey's help in identifying the victim, a young woman who was murdered and left for dead in the old quarry of the title. Neither they nor Kinsey expect that reopening an old case will incite the killer to strike again--not once, but twice. And while the real case of the still-unidentified victim that inspired this fictionalized scenario continues to languish in the cold case file in the Santa Barbara sheriff's office, Grafton's solution is as plausible as any. While the unlikely trio of Millhone and her cranky geezer sidekicks offers a few chuckles, the inner reaches of Kinsey's soul remain largely inaccessible to her as well as to the reader, which will probably not bother most of Kinsey's or Grafton's many admirers. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
While Kinsey Millhone is as energetic and tenacious as ever, and the plot hustles along at a gratifying pace, her 17th adventure is a little slow getting underway with all the initial accumulated biographical data. Two policemen out hunting discover a teenage girl's body near a quarry off California's Highway 1. Eighteen years later, the two recruit Millhone to help them try to identify the victim. Stacey Oliphant, now retired from the force, and Con Dolan, unwillingly sidelined by heart trouble, are as quarrelsome as an old married couple, but they both desperately want to find the killer in the quarry case. Their inquiries lead the trio from Santa Teresa to Quorum, a town in the desert near the Arizona border. At the time of the murder, a wrecked red convertible was found near the crime scene-stolen from an auto shop in Quorum. When Millhone and her cohorts talk to the grumpy shop owner, Ruel McPhee, and his charming son, Cornell, they get little information. Visits around town and probing conversations reveal various family secrets and covert liaisons, until the somewhat precipitous unmasking of the killer. Grafton briefly shoehorns in Millhone's interactions with her lost family, but that subject continues to feel as artificially imposed as it did in earlier books. A marvelously successful addition, however, is the twosome of Dolan and Oliphant. Their deftly rendered relationship is a delight; with any luck, the duo will appear in future Millhone mysteries. A main selection of the Literary Guild, Doubleday Book Club and Mystery Guild, and a BOMC featured selection.

From Library Journal
Inspired by the actual unsolved murder of a young woman in Santa Barbara County, Grafton's latest (after P Is for Peril) has private investigator Kinsey Milhone on a quest for justice denied for 18 years. In the summer of 1969, the decomposed corpse of a young white female was discovered near a quarry off California's Highway 1. Her hands had been bound and her throat slashed. Despite months of investigation, "Jane Doe" remained unidentified and the case unsolved. Now years later, Con Donlan and Stacey Oliphant, the police officers who had found her body, want Kinsey to help them to identify the girl and find her killer before they retire. At the same time, having learned that the body was found on a ranch owned by her estranged grandmother, Kinsey journeys into the past to retrace her own family history. Once again, an intriguing plot, fully drawn characters, and wry humor prove why Grafton's series is one of the best. With nine letters to go, one hopes she can keep it up. For all mystery collections.

Q is for Quarry - A Kinsey Millhone Novel
By MarionLibrarion
This was the best book in Sue Grafton's alphabet murder mystery series yet. It was based on a real life unsolved homicide that occurred in Santa Barbara County in August 1969. It included illustrations of how the young woman may have looked created by a retired medical illustrator. Even thought the plot was fictional, Sue included many details of this case. Sue hopes that someone will recognize the young woman and come forward with information about her. Fantastic!

A woman and two older men
By Fred Camfield
This novel is like a slow baseball game with two announcers, one giving the play-by-play and the other giving color commentary - in this case long descriptions of passing scenery, people, restaurant menus, etc. This is the 17th novel about private investigator Kinsey Millhone in the fictional city of Santa Teresa, California (set geographically in the location of the real life Santa Barbara). In this case, she teams up with Lieutenant Con Dolan, on medical disability from the Santa Teresa Police Department, and retired Dectective Stacey Oliphant of the Santa Teresa County Sheriff's Office.
The time setting is early in 1987. Kinsey is helping out on an 18-year old unsolved murder case. Con and Stacey had been the men who discovered the body, and they are interested in closing out the case. A new look at the case reveals new evidence. The play-by-play is interesting, but the color commentary seems a bit excessive and makes the story drag. Along the way, Kinsey discovers additional information about her mother's family. A major part of the story is the rehabilitation of Con and Stacey.
The novel has some motion picture potential, where the side commentary could be covered visually. As an added feature, look in the back of the book for the forensic reconstruction of an unidentified murder victim that the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office would like help in identifying.

Two motherless daughters
By A Customer
This is an ambitious book, more satisfying and daring than "P." Kinsey, orphaned at an early age herself, is investigating the long-ago death of a runaway, the kind of girl society allows to fall through the cracks. (Was she with her birth mother? Did she run away? Does anyone who knew her care?) Kinsey was smart enough and lucky enough to build a series of surrogate families -- beginning with her neighbor Henry and now including the two elderly cops. This support system gives her a strength the young murder victim didn't have. There are other women in this story, one is a girl whose home life was also very difficult who dreamt of better, more stable future with the boy next door, another loves too well but not too wisely, a third is an adoring sister who knows more about her brother than she says. Against this backdrop, Kinsey is dealing with her own unresolved feelings about her mother, grandmother, aunts and cousins. The comparison of the lives of these women add texture and substance to the story that is unusual with books of this genre. The only reason I subtracted a star is the mystery itself. I figured out the killer's identity long before Kinsey did -- and I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I wish she put as much work on plot as she did on character.

From Publishers Weekly
Murder, greed, lust, corruption and an extraordinary preoccupation with food and drink--trademarks of Sanders's Deadly Sin and Commandment bestsellers--are here, yet this tale lacks the passion needed to engage readers fully. When New York City jewelry magnate Lewis Starrett is stabbed to death on the street, insurance investigator Dora Conti, whose firm carries the $3-million policy on his life, is assigned to look into the murder. The array of suspects includes the victim's son, who may be using the family's corporate empire for his own nefarious purposes; his drug-crazed daughter; the amoral brother-and-sister team romantically involved with each of them; and a religious charlatan who holds the widow in thrall. As murder follows upon murder, relationships among this sorry lot deterioriate at a ludicrous rate. Meanwhile, amidst her probings, Dora, a refreshingly plump and ordinary heroine, is tempted to endanger her happy marriage in a fling with the NYPD detective on the case, a subplot lacking both tension and interest. This disappointing outing from the author of The Fourth Deadly Sin winds down to a flat and undramatic, albeit fitting, conclusion. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selections; Mystery Guild alternate.

GOOD FEMALE INVESTIGATOR
By Roger Angle
I enjoyed it. Didn’t knock my socks off. Liked the characters, especially Dora the insurance investigator. Very smart and capable, a good female character. The plot didn’t really work for me. (SPOILER ALERT) The whole business of selling fake gold to launder drug money seemed ho-hum. I did like the hot babe who either kills people or gets them killed. Maybe she should’ve been the heroine, like Patricia Highsmith’s bad guy who wins in THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY series. This Sanders didn’t really lift me up and carry me away. But it is hard to find good thrillers. Not as good as Laura Lippman’s WILDE LAKE.

Old school.
By Carolynn
Read this guy if you want to know what was supposedly hep in the 50's & 60's. And if you want to snigger at the pulp writing and character-profiling crimes of fiction.
