Lost in Suburbia: a Momoir: How I Got Pregnant, Lost Myself, and Got My Cool Back in the New Jersey Suburbs, by Tracy Beckerman

It’s a suburban jungle out there

When syndicated columnist Tracy Beckerman trades in her TV job and cool NYC existence for the New Jersey suburbs, she doesn’t expect to also trade in her entire identity. But her new life as a stay-at-home mom knocks her for a loop in more ways than one. From the embarrassment of being ticketed while driving in her bathrobe to the challenge of making friends in the land of big hair and minivans, Beckerman shares her struggles with self-deprecating humor as she endeavors to reclaim her cool.

Beckerman reveals the universal trials, tribulations, and triumphs of every mom who has to figure out how to stay sane while fishing Barbie heads out of the toilet; how to laugh when your kid asks the fat cop at the doughnut shop if he’s having a baby; and how to look good when your post-baby butt is so big you want to hang a “Caution: Wide Load” sign behind you.

At once irreverent, hilarious, and keenly observed, Lost in Suburbia is about what you give up to become a mother—and what you get back.

"Tracy Beckerman's writing is clever, funny and always relatable. You'll read this book and wish she lived next door!" --Robin O'Bryant author of Ketchup is a Vegetable and Other Lies Moms Tell Themselves

"Lighthearted, mostly humorous memoir of suburban motherhood based on the author's nationally syndicated column. Published by more than 400 newspapers in 25 states, Beckerman's column inspired an eponymous blog (lostinsuburbia.net), and her funny accounts of situations running the gamut from mundane to outrageous have resonated with readers, particularly mothers of young children. This book opens with a scene in which the always self-deprecating Beckerman, on an afternoon school run to pick up her daughter, was pulled over by a police officer who dryly observed that she was wearing her bathrobe. Chapter titles, including 'I'm Not Fat, I'm Just Pregnant. Okay, I'm Fat, Too" and ' 'P' Is for Parenting and Prozac,' in addition to Beckerman's tone, are consistently zippy and dramatic. She includes plenty of confrontations, like the scene in which her husband discovered she got a tattoo at age 35, as well as internal monologues riffing on the less-appealing aspects of motherhood, such as the lack of time to take a shower. The tattoo and subsequent chopping off of her hair are ascribed to Beckerman's desire to be 'cool' again, the way she was pre-motherhood when she worked in TV and lived in Manhattan. These efforts string the chapters together with the theme of the reignition of her individuality. Feeling that people look down on mothers, she acknowledges that 'the second we become moms we start to let ourselves go.' Beckerman doesn't want to lose herself in motherhood, and her 'momoir' offers entertaining vignettes about balancing her responsibilities at home with her quest to tap into her true self. Breezy fun."--Kirkus Reviews

Looking for your cool? This is the book for you.
By ACE942
Tracy Beckerman was out of her element. She tells us her story in a "momoir" - what better way to describe her journey could there be? Lost in Suburbia: A Momoir of How I Got Pregnant, Lost Myself, and Got My Cool Back in the New Jersey Suburbs is hilarious.

From running around town in her bathrobe to battling the bulge, Tracy is someone I can relate to. Completely. Even if it scares me to say as much.

She walks us through pregnancy, sharing her understanding of the way our lives change after motherhood begins. With pricey haircuts, fancy lunches and sample sales, life before motherhood is a breeze. Compare it to stretch marks, under-eye circles, skimming french fries off your child's plate and shopping at strip malls and TJ Maxx and you'll wonder where you went wrong.

Letting us come along on the ride with her, Tracy has allowed us to laugh, SO hard. Laugh at her. Laugh at ourselves. Just plain laugh. You absolutely want a copy of this book. For yourself. Your friends. Your mom. Your grandmother. Maybe your mother-in-law, too! You won't be sorry for picking up a copy. I promise!

An Authentic, Relatable Voice of Motherhood
By Estelle Sobel Erasmus
Tracy Beckerman is the friend you wish you had in those early days of motherhood, when your new identity was being reforged in the fires of frustration of being the main provider of sustenance and emotional nourishment to a little one who ultimately wielded more control over you, than your worst boss ever had.

She writes of those early travails of motherhood in a hilarious voice (you'll never quite look at ducky bathrobes the same way again), and details her journey from uber coolness working in Manhattan in television; to getting pregnant, moving to Suburbia and trying to recapture her now-elusive cool all over again.

You'll love how relatable Tracy is through it all, and how side-splittingly funny. She is the modern Erma Bombeck, but (and she'll really appreciate this), with better hair.

I could not put it down!
By Leslie Marinelli
Tracy is the kind of humorist I want to be if/when I grow up. It's no wonder she is a nationally syndicated columnist and Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop presenter! I started reading Lost in Suburbia two days ago, fully expecting it to be just another "blogger Momoir" and truly could not put it down. I'll be chuckling about "Frankenbaby," "Szechuan Taco," the Laurel & Hardy-esque Jenny Craig "Anytime bars" routine, and faux-peanut-allergy-tennis-assassin-Cheryl for a long time! For me, the thing that makes Tracy's writing so outstanding and relatable is her ability to tell a good story with just the right amount of wit and heart, and even a touch of slapstick now and then. And how she does it without foul language or scale drawings of her nether regions is a mystery. Any woman who has ever struggled with life changes, making new friends, or getting a tankini bottom to properly cover her postpartum posterior will love this book!
