Dick Francis’s beloved investigator Sid Halley returns in the riveting new mystery by New York Times–bestselling author Felix Francis.
Six years ago, investigator Sid Halley retired for good. He’d been harassed, beaten, shot, even lost a hand to his investigating business, and enough was enough. For the sake of his wife and new daughter he gave up that life of danger and uncertainty, and he thought nothing would ever lure him back into the game.
He thought wrong. Sir Richard Stewart, chairman of the racing authority, begs Sid to investigate a series of dodgy races. Sid adamantly refuses, but the following day, Sir Richard is found dead under suspicious circumstances. And then a man with an Irish accent contacts Sid, telling him to deliver a whitewashed report about the suspected race-fixing . . . or else.
At first Sid ignores these warnings, knowing that once he submits to this criminal bully, he will forever be under his control. But as the intimidation tactics escalate—and Sid’s own family comes under threat—Sid realizes he must meet his enemy head-on . . . or he might pay the ultimate price for his refusal.

*Starred Review* In the steeplechase world, “refusal” means that a horse will not take a jump. Dick Francis’ son Felix, collaborator with his father on several novels and now the heir to his father’s line of mysteries, extends the equestrian definition to the massively banged-up (physically and emotionally) Sid Halley, who stars in a Francis novel for the first time since 2006. Halley, a champion steeplechase jockey who lost his left hand to the double whammy of a fall from a horse and an attack by a thug, long ago turned his insider’s knowledge of the race world into private investigative work. But an intense fear campaign directed at his girlfriend made him retire from the track altogether at the end of Under Orders. When the chairman of the British Racing Authority asks Halley to investigate his strong suspicion that races are being fixed, Halley refuses. Even after the chairman is found dead, threats made to Halley’s family, and his daughter placed in danger, Halley still refuses, holding onto the safety of his family, which he knows would be blown apart by his investigating the case. What finally tips Halley into changing his mind is entirely convincing, even though it ratchets up the danger for Halley and his family. This is fascinating reading on every level, from the neatly calibrated plot, moving from suspense to terror, to all the details of the racing world Francis provides. Halley is now, as before, an utterly complex, interest-holding character. And the final, moral turn that Francis makes of “refusal” is brilliant. A heroic return for Sid Halley. --Connie Fletcher

—Booklist
"Gamble has all the things that loyal readers have anticipated in their annual Francis fix: a taut and intelligent story full of suspense, danger and mystery in spare and fast-moving prose that keeps readers' attention . . . Francis novels, under new management, will continue to find themselves at the very top levels of genre fiction.”
—Washington Times

Buy the UK version
By Susan
I think Felix has finally hit his stride with his fathers books. This latest Sid Halley thriller was certainly up to par. I hated for the story to end.
One complaint I have had about his books is that the publisher prints an Americanized version. They change words like "flat" to "apartment" and other British terms to the American version. I find it rather annoying. For Refusal I ordered direct from Amazon.co.uk and found the telling of the story much more enjoyable and as the author intended it - in a British voice. Looks like I will begin ordering British authors from the Amazon UK site from now on.

Felix Has His Father's Touch
By Amazon Customer
The only complaint I have about Refusal is that it came to an end. Working with his father all those years has given Felix Francis a level of skill and craftsmanship to be admired.
I suppose it's obvious that Francis books have a formula: A courageous hero, slow-building menace, a point where the hero decides to fight back, and a final terrifying confrontation with the villain. But formula or not, they are pure pleasure to read.
I certainly hope Felix is hard at work with the next novel.

An excellent Sid Halley story and edge-of-your-seat thriller!
By Ellie's Reads
Oh, it is just so good to be able to read a really excellent Sid Halley book again! This polished presentation of Sid's life and adventures six years after we left him in Under Orders journeys from a gentle re-introduction of my favorite ex-jockey to several spine-jarring plot twists and a villain so, well, villainous, it's almost impossible to comprehend. (Just TRY not getting emotionally involved in this one!) Several new characters in Sid's world are beautifully presented and I was pleased to find old favorites as well. A real bonus is that this thriller is extremely well crafted. The sentences, chapters, and plots simply wind effortlessly into one another to arrive ultimately at an ending that is both tremendously satisfying and a bit cliff-hangerish (leaving me hoping and longing for more time with Sid one day).
One of the most charming aspects of this story, as with all Francis books, is to be able to follow the main character's thoughts throughout; little random touches like an unexpected conversation with a psychiatrist or amusing observations of fellow passengers on a train are far from ordinary. And lovely slices of Sid's new life and the British racing scene are interspersed with surprises that will literally take your breath away. Frankly, I enjoyed BLOODLINE so much I wasn't sure if author Felix Francis could live up to my own anticipation for this new release, but he has indeed. If I were British I'd call this book smashing and brilliant. In fact, I think I'll call it that anyway. Why not? Felix Francis and Dick Francis fans should be delighted with REFUSAL.
