A Light, Easy to Read Review
By John G. Hilliard
This book does not hit the Bob Woodward standard of a blow-by-blow account covering all participants, but it does offer an interesting view of the situation. I would have liked more discussion of the economic issues, but maybe there just was not the focus on them by Carter (that may explain the outcome of his administrations economic record). The author does write in an easy to follow method and comes off as more of a conversation between friends in place of a heavy political review. This is an interesting book that is worth the time if you are interested in the political environment during the hostage crises. There are better reviews of the election process namely by Elizabeth Drew.

Interesting insight into Carter administration
By Ryan Bray
I was born into the Reagan administration, and always heard horror stories from my parents about Carter's presidency. This book helped put the complaints I've heard about Carter into perspective.

Overall, the book paints Carter's advisers as conflicted and Carter himself as somewhat indecisive on certain issues that came back to bite him again and again during his last year in office. Overall a good read, excellent if you are into politics or studying Poli-sci.

Major League Politics
By Dr. Wilson Trivino
In Crisis: The Last Year of the Carter Presidency by Hamilton Jordan two things stand out in this book. One, how the problems of the last year of the Carter Presidency seem so simple compared to what we face today, and two, the high burden that was placed on the author Hamilton Jordan to micromanage large crisis. Jordan personally shuttled across the globe to deal with the hostage situation and find a home for the Shah of Iran.
The book is written a diary format and you are taken inside the fast pace action inside the White House. That last year in 1980 was also an election year, so there are some insights into the failed re-election campaign.
To Carter's credit, all the hostages were returned alive and well, but his it took a toll on his Presidency and a missed opportunity to a second term.
This is fascinating read and makes you think that the political drama of that era is similar to what we experience today.
After the year review, there is a poignant scene where Jordan rushes aboard Air Force One to get an update on the hostage crisis from the situation room. He calls and there is concern on the other line. He reassures them that he is calling from a secure phone. As it turns out, that is not the problem, the issue is that Carter is no longer president, Reagan is, and thus cuts Jordan's access to sensitive information. He goes from a who's who to a whose he. A presidency is limited by the length of his term and then it's power and trappings move on to the next guy. So is the magic of democracy and Crisis gives you glimpse into the last year of the Carter years.
